Previous issue date: 2013-08-29 / Reflecting the possibility of talking about beliefs involving teacher´s behavior in class instigated us to try to understand how these attitudes appear in language classrooms.
Barcelos (2004, 2006, 2010, 2011), considers that beliefs have great power upon our behavior and actions, existing an inter-relation among beliefs, attitudes and identity
construction. Understanding teacher´s identity as an ongoing process (TADEU DA SILVA,2004) that shapes itself to the reality inside the classroom and knowing that beliefs and attitudes can be modified, as well as language policies are inter-related in this process all the time this research, with a qualitative nature, aims at observing, identifying and analyzing beliefs and attitudes of a teacher from a public school located
in Paraná. Our studies comprehended Spanish teaching/learning process, as a case study. Based on Picanço (2003), we gathered historical facts related to language
teaching/learning process analyzed through the language policy in Brazil, specifically in Paraná. In the theoretical revision, we present some positions about studies related to
beliefs and attitudes according to Le Bon (2002); Barcelos (2004, 2006, 2010, 2011);Vieira-Abrahão (2004, 2010, 2011) e Silva (2010, 2011) among others. Some questions guided this work: “ which beliefs the teacher shows in her practice?” “Are there any difference between teacher´s beliefs and acts and the language policy concerned to
language teaching?” “What relations do these beliefs establish with the teacher´s actions?”. In general terms, the beliefs presented in Spanish language classes are similar to some beliefs that have already appeared in other research works, once the participant showed beliefs with these thematic: a) beliefs about the learning process of FL by FL;b) Beliefs about how to deal with an error; c) Beliefs about the lack of interest in learning FL; d) Beliefs about the importance of learning S/FL; e) Beliefs about student´s autonomy in learning language; f) Beliefs about the role of the vocabulary in S/FL
classes; g) Beliefs about the ludic role in the S/FL classes; h) Beliefs about the necessity of persuade students to learn; i) Beliefs about the “facility” in learning S/FL; and j)
Beliefs about the group work activities role in class.
As

Les effets de l’enseignement de stratégies de communication orale en cours d’espagnol, langue étrangère en France / The effects of teaching oral communication strategies to learners of Spanish as a foreign language in FranceOspina Garcia, Santiago 18 November 2016 (has links)
In this action research we have designed a pedagogical program aimed at developing the strategic competence of a group of multilingual students learning Spanish at the European Franco-German Campus of Sciences Po Paris in Nancy (France). We taught specific oral communication strategies in order to study the effects of this learning experience based, on the one hand, on students’ use of strategies before and after our intervention and, on the other hand, on their opinions and attitudes towards the learning of strategies in the classroom. We used several research instruments to collect a significant amount of data that allowed us to answer our four research questions: (1) What are the oral communication strategies used by the students at the beginning and end of the research? (2) Does the teaching of specific oral communication strategies raise the use of these strategies? (3) What impact do retrospective interviews have on our research? (4) What are the students’ attitudes towards the teaching of specific oral communication strategies? The data analyzed was collected from four monological language tasks before and after our intervention. Results show that the use of taught strategies increased whereas the use of non-taught strategies decreased. It was also observed that students’ language proficiency improved. Regarding the contribution of the retrospective interviews to our research, this technique helped us to access “invisible” data that allowed us to understand some of the mental processes that led learners to produce a range of communication strategies. Finally, students stated that they enjoyed and learned from this learning experience.

This memory aims to highlight the renunciation that suffered, and still do nowadays, the teaching of the pronunciation in the Spanish courses as foreign language (SFL), to reaffirm its importance and to defend the need for its integration in the classrooms. It is a fact that with the current communicative approach and with the different duties, the students acquire higher knowledge in written language but do not have very satisfactory results in their pronunciation. In addition, the teachers don’t count on the integration of pronunciation methods in their approaches, and the deficiency of this material is more than obvious.
The current curricular designs did not integrate a natural form of pronunciation teaching in its methodological talks. The selection and analyzes of some IT teaching handbooks, that are currently use in the province of Quebec, confirms these deficiencies. In the last part of this work, we present a selection of exercises that we consider useful for the teaching and the development of pronunciation, including the elements supra segmentary in a real and communicative context and in an integrated way.
Didactic of the teaching that pays attention to the formal language system, grammar and the lexicon, can also contemplate pronunciation teaching by using the same prospect. Important it is that this perspective should be integrated like an additional phase of the training process, and stop to be a matter to be passed by in the curriculums.

A case study of two upper secondary school students of Spanish as a foreign language in SwedenMarder, Liliya January 2012 (has links)
The present research paper focuses on the role of motivation of the L2 learners for the development of literary competence (LC). The overall aim of this investigation is to explore how different components of a literary reading course can influence the students´ motivation to develop the LC. The present paper is a case study of two Swedish students of Spanish as a foreign language in a secondary school situated in Sollentuna, Sweden. The investigation uses a combination of qualitative, interpretive and quantitative methods and attempts to understand the concepts under analysis within the learning context in its entirety. The materials to be analysed are the student reader’s portfolios, as well as questionnaires and semi-structured interviews carried out with the same participants. The results of the study suggest that the development of the LC is in correlation with the resultative and the intrinsic types of motivation, whereas the predominant motivational orientation of the learner was not found to play a significant role for the learning results of the participants. On the other hand, the motivation to develop the LC was positively affected by such course elements as a possibility to select a task or material, the use of multi-modal texts, integration of language skills and a regular individual feedback. The findings of this study add to the understanding of what creates the learner’s motivation, and also may serve as a base for suggestions for a competence-based literature teaching in a foreign language classroom. In the conclusions of this dissertation, possible directions for future research are outlined.

The effects of processing instruction, structured input, and visual input enhancement on the acquisition of the subjunctive in adjectival clauses by intermediate-level distance learners of SpanishRussell, Victoria 01 June 2009 (has links)
This study investigated the effects of processing instruction (PI) on the acquisition of the subjunctive in adjectival clauses by 92 intermediate-level distance learners of Spanish. PI is a novel instructional technique that is based on VanPatten's principles of input processing (1993, 1996, 2002, 2004), and it has three key components: (a) an explicit explanation of grammar that is not paradigmatic, (b) information on processing strategies, and (c) structured input tasks and activities. Structured input activities were isolated and combined with computerized visual input enhancement (VIE) in an attempt to increase the salience of targeted grammatical forms for web based delivery. VIE was operationalized as word animation of subjunctive forms through flash programming language.
An experiment comparing four experimental groups with traditional instruction indicates that for interpretation and production tasks, there were no significant differences between PI and traditional instruction. However, learners who received PI combined with VIE outperformed learners who received structured input activities without VIE for interpretation tasks. In addition, the present study examined the effects of PI when learners encountered targeted forms that were embedded in an authentic input passage that was received following the experimental exposure. Thus far, studies in the PI strand have only examined how learners interact with structured, or manipulated, input.
The results of the present study indicate that participants who received PI in combination with VIE noticed targeted forms in subsequent authentic input with metalinguistic awareness, and they demonstrated a significantly higher level of awareness than participants who received traditional instruction or structured input activities. Further, learners who received PI, with or without VIE, were better processors of targeted forms that were embedded in subsequent authentic input than learners who received structured input activities without VIE.

El aprendizaje de vocabulario en la clase escolar sueca y las aplicaciones para teléfonos inteligentes : Un acercamiento a su posible uso como estrategia didáctica / Vocabulary learning in Swedish schools and applications for smartphones : An approach to the possible use of smartphones as didactic toolsLenhult, Anna January 2014 (has links)
The present study deals with vocabulary learning of Spanish as a foreign language and investigates if the use of didactic smartphone applications focused on vocabulary learning could help the learning of new words in Spanish for students at level 1, both in secondary schools and in upper secondary schools. The study also investigates to what extent the teachers of Spanish as a foreign language use didactic vocabulary applications in order for the students to learn new words. To conduct the study two vocabulary tests have been made in four classes at level 1 in Swedish schools. Half the students learnt the vocabulary with the use of a didactic application, while the other half learnt it by using the traditional strategy with lists of words. Conversations were also held with three Swedish teachers in Spanish as a foreign language about their use of didactic applications in their teaching. The results show that the students that used the didactic application to learn the vocabulary remembered the words better than the students that learnt the vocabulary by using the traditional strategy. Nevertheless, the three teachers in the investigation never use didactic applications in their teaching since they lack experience of technical tools. The analysis indicates that even though learning with the use of didactic applications is good for vocabulary learning and that investigators recommend teachers to use mobile applications in their teaching, the teachers do not do it because of their little knowledge about technical resources. Hence, the conclusion is that learning vocabulary with didactic applications is more successful than learning vocabulary by using the traditional strategy, but also that Swedish teachers in Spanish as a foreign language need practice in the technical environment so that they can use mobile applications in their teaching.

This quantitative study that is based on a collection of 151 questionnaires focuses on the use of different resources in relation to the teaching and learning of Spanish as a Foreign Language in three different upper secondary schools and one secondary school in the city of Karlskrona, Blekinge, Sweden. The aim is to get a clearer view on students’ and teachers’ perceptions on the following resources: textbook, PowerPoint, music, video, film, articles, theatre or fiction. We want to investigate whether the 147 selected pupils and their four teachers believe that these recourses would be beneficial or not in relation to the following abilities: listening- and reading comprehension, oral- and writing expression since all pupils have different learning styles. The purpose is also to investigate the perception of the students and teachers on the subject of motivation and grades and whether or not those mentioned recourses increase their motivation and grades. From here, we would like to gain a better understanding on those means and if they should remain in its current state of use or not. To be able to accomplish the aim of this study, we have chosen to base the investigation, besides from the questionnaires, the theoretical framework such as Neuro-linguistic programming created by Bandler and Grinder, which is based on the idea that all pupils are different and assimilate knowledge in different ways. We will also give an overview on the different resources selected. As a conclusion, the results showed that the textbook, which we refer to as a traditional resource in this study, is more preferable than the remaining ones in the context of writing expression, reading comprehension and to obtain better grades according to the students’ and the teachers’ perceptions. The students also believe that this traditional resource is more beneficial in relation to the oral expression while the teachers think that theatre and film are the most advantageous ones concerning this skill. In relation to the listening comprehension, the students believe that film is the most preferable resource while the teachers sense that video and music are more favourable. Finally, the representatives of this investigation sense that a few of the modern resources are more beneficial than the traditional.

Fantechi, Giancarlo 10 1900 (has links)
This research aims at demonstrating the pertinence of the utilization of the novel The City of the Beasts (Isabel Allende, 2002) as a tool for teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language (ELE) at an intermediate level (B2) and in a multicultural context. Within this frame, the teaching of a second language pursues linguistic acquisition and encourages the exploration of a different culture in order to foster the discovery of the values of the other and its critical integration. This attitude shows to be indispensable for the development of the identity of the individual within societies growingly exposed from inside and outside to interaction between cultures. The selected novel allows access to interdisciplinary connections within Quebec’s College programs and promotes an attitude of openness toward the discovery of other cultures and values, requiring availability to question the student’s own cultural presuppositions, according to the tenets of contemporary intercultural studies. The novel belongs to the literary movement of Magical Realism, which helps introduce the students to the exploration of specifically Hispanic cultural themes. After a revision of the place of interculturalism and interdisciplinarity in the teaching of ELE, the dissertation analyses the specific contribution of the selected novel to these dimensions, in order to present exercises oriented toward the practice and the consolidation of grammatical and lexical knowledge, and toward the development of an intercultural sensibility in the students, providing individual and group activities built from the perspectives that emerge from the text.

A MOTIVAÇÃO NA AULA DE LÍNGUA INSTRUMENTAL: CRENÇAS DE ALUNOS / MOTIVATION IN THE SPECIFIC PUROPOSES LANGUAGE CLASS: STUDENTS´ BELIEFSSelvero, Caroline Mitidieri 27 February 2013 (has links)
The objective of this research was to investigate the change of teaching for specific purposes in the students´ believes on teaching/learning of languages and the reflection of these changes in the motivation for learning a new language. The objectives of this study were to map and investigate the beliefs and the motivation before and after the course; verifying if and how the teaching for specific purposes influenced in the beliefs and if the modification of the beliefs influenced in the motivation of the students towards learning Spanish as a foreign language. The Socio-interactionist theory was used as theoretical foundation, as well as teaching for specific purposes, the beliefs and the motivation. The collection of data for the research was carried out during the classes of two editions of the project Espanhol para Viagens, through a pre and post-questionnaire, interviews and observations. The data analysis showed that the beliefs and the motivation of the students influenced and suffered influence of the teaching/learning of Spanish for specific purposes, in such a way that some beliefs were redefined and others came up. In the course of the analysis, some beliefs related to the Spanish language were identified, that consider it an easy language to learn, because of its similarity to Portuguese. At the same time, the students believe that this similarity can cause confusion to the learner. Regarding interaction, the students believe that it favors communication between teacher-learner/learner-learner, which is an essential point for learning Spanish as a foreign language. We consider that the direct contact with Spanish in the classroom and the constant interaction with the teacher were determining aspects for the redefining of the students´ beliefs and for the increase of motivation during the classes of the course.
