Les causes évolutives de certaines formes de vie en groupe sont bien identifiées mais pas celles des agrégations de diapause des arthropodes (rassemblements monospécifiques d'adultes dans des sites à localisation constante). Dans cette thèse, j'ai testé si, selon l'hypothèse du lek caché, les arthropodes se rassemblent pour trouver leurs partenaires sexuels chez la coccinelle Hippodamia undecimnotata. J'ai montré que les coccinelles se rassemblent dans des endroits avec un repère proéminent et où le risque de pesticides est faible, puis que les conditions abiotiques dans les sites sont défavorables à la survie des coccinelles. Ensuite, j'ai mis en évidence l'occurrence de nombreux accouplements dans les sites d'agrégation. Enfin, j'ai montré que ces accouplements sont peu coûteux en énergie pour les femelles, qui conservent de l'énergie pour les comportements post-agrégation. Cette thèse atteste que les agrégations de diapause font partie du système de reproduction des arthropodes. / The evolutionary significance of some kinds of group living are well-known, some others such as the diapause aggregations remain poorly known although widespread. In this thesis, I tested if the arthropods form diapause aggregations to find their mates according to the hidden lek hypothesis with the ladybird Hippodamia undecimnotata. By using a Species Distribution Model, I showed that ladybirds aggregate in places with a prominent object and where the risk of being sprayed by pesticides is low. Then, I highlighted that abiotic conditions are unfavourable to ladybirds' survival. In a third part, I found that mating is widespread activity in the aggregation sites. Finally, I showed that energetic costs linked to mating are low, and thus allow the ladybirds to disperse and display post aggregations behaviour. This thesis shows that the diapause aggregations are part of the mating system of the arthropods and that sexual selection can be a driver of the evolution of diapause aggregations.

Habitat models to predict wetland bird occupancy influenced by scale, anthropogenic disturbance, and imperfect detectionGlisson, Wesley J., Conway, Courtney J., Nadeau, Christopher P., Borgmann, Kathi L. 06 1900 (has links)
Understanding species-habitat relationships for endangered species is critical for their conservation. However, many studies have limited value for conservation because they fail to account for habitat associations at multiple spatial scales, anthropogenic variables, and imperfect detection. We addressed these three limitations by developing models for an endangered wetland bird, Yuma Ridgway's rail (Rallus obsoletus yumanensis), that examined how the spatial scale of environmental variables, inclusion of anthropogenic disturbance variables, and accounting for imperfect detection in validation data influenced model performance. These models identified associations between environmental variables and occupancy. We used bird survey and spatial environmental data at 2473 locations throughout the species' U.S. range to create and validate occupancy models and produce predictive maps of occupancy. We compared habitat-based models at three spatial scales (100, 224, and 500 m radii buffers) with and without anthropogenic disturbance variables using validation data adjusted for imperfect detection and an unadjusted validation dataset that ignored imperfect detection. The inclusion of anthropogenic disturbance variables improved the performance of habitat models at all three spatial scales, and the 224-m-scale model performed best. All models exhibited greater predictive ability when imperfect detection was incorporated into validation data. Yuma Ridgway's rail occupancy was negatively associated with ephemeral and slow-moving riverine features and high-intensity anthropogenic development, and positively associated with emergent vegetation, agriculture, and low-intensity development. Our modeling approach accounts for common limitations in modeling species-habitat relationships and creating predictive maps of occupancy probability and, therefore, provides a useful framework for other species.

Traits fonctionnels, tolérances et distributions des espèces herbacées sur un gradient de disponibilité en eau : une approche prédictive par modèle d'équation structuraleBelluau, Michaël January 2017 (has links)
L’assemblage des espèces (leurs présences/absence) dans une communauté naturelle est la conséquence de plusieurs mécanismes de filtrage réalisés par l'environnement. Parmi ces filtres, le filtre abiotique sélectionne les espèces capables de tolérer les conditions environnementales locales. La variation de la disponibilité de l'eau dans le sol est l'un des principaux gradients environnementaux selon lesquels les espèces végétales sont différemment réparties. Considérant l’hypothèse que les traits fonctionnels et leurs relations sont hiérarchisées, les préférences d’habitat des espèces le long de gradients environnementaux devraient être déterminées par une combinaison de traits physiologiques et morpho-anatomiques hiérarchisés.
Au cours de ce doctorat, mon objectif général est d'identifier les traits fonctionnels morphologiques, anatomiques et physiologiques de tolérance à la sécheresse qui peuvent prédire la présence des espèces le long d'un gradient d’hydrologie des sols. Plus spécifiquement, nous cherchons à savoir : (i) Quels sont les traits physiologiques qui reflètent le mieux la tolérance à la sécheresse ? (ii) Quelles sont les relations entre les traits morpho-anatomiques et les traits physiologiques de tolérance ? (iii) Quels sont les traits morpho-anatomiques en conditions optimales permettant de prédire la tolérance des espèces herbacées à la sécheresse ? (iv) Quelles formes ont les relations qui existe entre les traits morpho-anatomiques de tolérance en condition optimale et la présence des espèces en cas de sécheresse ? (v) Peut-on prédire les présences des espèces en cas de sécheresse à partir de leurs traits morpho-anatomiques?
Nos résultats montrent (1) qu’il est possible de prédire la distribution des espèces sur un gradient d’hydrologie des sols à partir de cinq traits physiologiques de tolérance à la sécheresse. Ces cinq traits sont la photosynthèse nette maximale, la conductance stomatique maximale, le potentiel hydrique du sol au point de flétrissement, la conductance stomatique au point de flétrissement et l’efficacité d’utilisation de l’eau au point de flétrissement. Nous avons montré que (ii) les traits physiologiques de tolérance à la sécheresse sont prédits par les traits morpho-anatomiques en conditions optimales (surface spécifique foliaire, teneur en matière sèche des feuilles, teneur en azote foliaire, longueur spécifique racinaire et surface stomatique). (iii) Les traits morpho-anatomiques seuls ne sont pas de bons prédicteurs de l’hydrologie des espèces et (iv) que la séquence « traits morpho-anatomiques → traits physiologiques → hydrologie des espèces » donne les meilleures prédictions. Cependant, (v) le modèle ne donne pas de prédictions fiables si l’on utilise des traits morpho-anatomiques mesurés en conditions naturelles. Ces résultats confirment, au moins partiellement, l’hypothèse que la distribution des espèces sur un gradient hydrologiques peut être prédite à partir de leurs traits de tolérance à la sécheresse eux-mêmes prédits par leurs traits morpho-anatomiques.
En résumé, nous avons utilisé une approche fonctionnelle en construisant un modèle causal prédictif qui nous a permis de nous intéresser aux mécanismes de filtrage environnementaux et plus précisément au rôle de la niche hydrologique des espèces dans l’assemblage des communautés végétales. / Abstract : Species assembly (their presence/absence) in a natural community is the consequence of several filtering mechanisms made by the environment. Among these filters, the abiotic filter selects
species able to tolerate local environmental conditions. Variation in water availability in the soil is one of the main environmental gradients according to which plant species are differently distributed. Considering the hypothesis that functional traits and their relationships are hierarchical, habitat preferences of species along environmental gradients should be determined by a combination of hierarchical physiological and morpho-anatomical traits. During this PhD, my overall goal is to identify morphological, anatomical and physiological drought tolerance functional traits that can predict the presence of species along a soil hydrology gradient. More specifically : (i) What are the physiological traits that best reflect drought
tolerance? (ii) What are the relationships between morpho-anatomical traits and physiological traits of tolerance? (iii) What are the optimal morpho-anatomical traits for predicting tolerance of herbaceous species to drought? (iv) What forms of relationships exist between optimal morpho-anatomical traits of tolerance and the presence of species in drought condition? (v) Can the presence of species in drought condition be predicted from their morpho-anatomical features? Our results show (1) that it is possible to predict the distribution of species on a soil hydrology gradient from five physiological traits of drought tolerance. These five traits are maximum net photosynthesis, maximum stomatal conductance, water potential of the soil at the wilting point, stomatal conductance at the wilting point, and efficiency of water use at the wilting point. We have shown that (ii) the physiological traits of drought tolerance are predicted by optimal morpho-anatomical traits (leaf area, leaf dry matter content, leaf nitrogen content, root length
and stomatal surface). (iii) Morpho-anatomical features alone are not good predictors of species hydrology and (iv) the sequence “morpho-anatomical traits physiological traits species hydrology” gives the best predictions. However (v) the model does not provide reliable predictions using morpho-anatomical traits measured under natural conditions. These results confirm, at least partially, the hypothesis that the distribution of species on a hydrological gradient can be predicted from their drought tolerance traits themselves predicted by their morpho-anatomical features. In summary, we used a functional approach by constructing a predictive causal model that allowed us to focus on environmental filtering mechanisms and more specifically on the role of the species hydrological niche in assembling plant communities.

Previous issue date: 2015 / Resumo: As mudanças climáticas possuem potencial para alterar o funcionamento dos ecossistemas através da extinção de espécies e das conexões entre a biota e o ambiente, alterando os padrões aos quais estamos acostumados e exigindo adaptação. As alterações climáticas terão como uma de suas consequências a elevação oceânica, que pode redesenhar as costas de todos os continentes terrestres e afetar a biota associada. Nesse contexto, sobressaem-se os anfíbios como um grupo sensível que sofre diversas pressões e apresenta declínios populacionais, se destacando como vertebrados mais ameaçados da atualidade, com diversas espécies pouco conhecidas. Sendo assim, nesse trabalho analisamos múltiplos efeitos que dificultam a conservação dos anfíbios. Avaliamos os potenciais efeitos das mudanças climáticas e da elevação oceânica sobre os anfíbios com distribuição costeira. Também desenvolvemos um índice para classificar espécies com dados insuficientes com a finalidade de oferecer uma alternativa para a busca de informações para esses taxa e mudar sua classificação atual. Por fim, analisamos a disponibilidade histórica de clima adequado para uma linhagem endêmica do fungo quitrídio em busca de padrões que pudessem explicar sua distribuição e raridade atuais. Utilizamos ferramentas como modelos de distribuição de espécies e sistema de informação geográfica em busca de respostas às nossas questões. Nossos resultados corroboram as mudanças climáticas como um fenômeno com potencial devastador e alertam para potenciais perigos da elevação oceânica. Além disso, nosso índice para espécies deficientes em dados pode auxiliar a direcionar esforços em busca de novas informações. Por fim, nossas análises com relação ao fungo quitrídio corroboram a hipótese de endemismo para a linhagem Bd-Brazil e também evidenciam hábitat adequado passado para o Bd-GPL. Além disso, verificamos baixa sobreposição de nicho climático entre essas duas linhagens, indicando possibilidade de competição. Assim, esperamos que nossos resultados tenham contribuído para o conhecimento de múltiplas ameaças à conservação dos anfíbios e sirvam para direcionar futuros estudos / Abstract: Climate change has the potential to change ecosystem functioning through species extinction and disrupting connection between biota and environment, thus changing natural patterns and requiring adaptation. One certain consequence of climate change is the sea level rise, which is expected to redraw coastal shorelines worldwide and broadly affect coastal-associated biota. In this context, amphibians represent a sensitive group under several current pressures, exhibiting population decline, highlighted as the most current threaten vertebrates on Earth, and also, with several "data deficient" species. Thus, herein we analyzed multiple effects that hamper amphibian conservation. We evaluated potential climate change effects and sea level rise on amphibians with coastal distribution. Also, we developed an index to classify data deficient species in order to offer an alternative further research of such species to gather sufficient information to change their current status. Finally, we analyzed historical availability of suitable habitat for and endemic lineage of the chytrid fungus searching for patterns that explain its current distribution and rarity. We used tools as species distribution models and geographic information system to answer our questions. Our results corroborate climate change as a potentially devastating phenomena and we stress potential threatens derived from sea level rise. Moreover, the index we developed for data deficient species seems to work properly and may drive further effort in searching for further information for those species. Finally, our analyzes related to the chytrid fungus supported the hypothesis of endemism of Bd-Brazil, and also showed past environmental suitability for Bd-GPL. In addition, we verified low environmental niche overlap these two lineages, indicating possibility of competition. No entanto, apesar dos avanços recentes, a seleção de variáveis preditoras tem sido relativamente negligenciada na construção dos MDE. Este procedimento deveria ser um dos passos cruciais do processo de modelagem, já que as variáveis preditoras estão relacionadas diretamente à capacidade dos modelos de capturar os requisitos ambientais das espécies. Neste contexto, os anfíbios são excelentes organismos modelo para avaliar a importância da seleção de variáveis preditoras ecologicamente significativas no MDE. Isto pode trazer avanços para a biogeografia e biologia da conservação, uma vez que os anfíbios são usados como bioindicadores da qualidade ambiental e da integridade de hábitat. A presente tese de doutorado teve como objetivo principal verificar o efeito da utilização de variáveis preditoras ecologicamente significativas no processo de modelagem dos anfíbios e posteriormente aplicar parte deste conhecimento na comunidade de anfíbios do Estado de São Paulo, visando verificar o potencial desta metodologia para identificar áreas de alto valor de riqueza de anfíbios e verificar também o potencial de invasão de Eleutherodactylus jonhstonei, uma espécie de anfíbio invasora registrada para o Estado de São Paulo. However, despite recent advances, the selection of predictor variables has been relatively neglected in the construction of SDM. This methodological approach should be one of the critical steps of the modeling process, as the predictor variables are directly related to the ability of models to capture the environmental requirements of the species. In this context, amphibians are excellent model for assessing the importance of selecting ecologically meaningful variables in the SDM. This methodology may lead to advances in biogeography and conservation biology, since amphibians are used as bioindicators of environmental quality and habitat integrity. The aim of the work was to verify the effect of the use of ecologically meaningful variables in the amphibian modeling process and to apply part of this knowledge to the amphibian community of São Paulo state, checking the potential of this methodology to identify areas of high amphibian richness value and to verify the potential invasion of Eleutherodactylus jonhstonei, an invasive amphibian species registered in São Paulo state. A Tale of Two Species: Black-tailed and White-tailed Prairie Dog Biogeography from the Last Interglacial to 2070Bledsoe, April Dawn 01 May 2020 (has links)
Ecological niche models (ENMs) were created for White-tailed and Black-tailed prairie dogs and projected into the Last Interglacial (LI), the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), and mid-Holocene (mid-H) to discern possible past suitable habitat for both species. Additionally, ENMs were projected into the future year 2070 representative concentration pathways (RCPs) 2.6 and 8.5 to discern how climate change may affect future habitat suitability. Kernel density estimations, minimum convex polygons, and median distribution centers of White-tailed and Black-tailed occurrence records were examined between time-periods to discern the effects of anthropogenic westward expansion on both species’ distributions. Current ENMs were constructed from commonly used bioclimatic variables and non-traditional variables (including EPA level III Ecoregions) for White-tailed and Black-tailed prairie dogs for variable comparison performance in ENMs. Results indicate that both species respond to climate change and each occupy distinct ecological niches. Biogeographical changes coincident with westward expansion remain unknown.

<b>Phylogenomics and species distribution models to infer evolutionary relationships, delimit species, and better understand lichen-host interactions in tiger moths</b>Makani L Fisher (17656290) 16 December 2023 (has links)
<p dir="ltr">The lichen-feeding tiger moth tribe Lithosiini (Erebidae: Arctiinae) represent the largest radiation of invertebrate lichenivory. Caterpillars feed on lichen and as they feed, also sequester lichen polyphenolics, a behavior unique to these insects. The role of these compounds is believed to defend lithosiines against predators as larvae have been found to be protected against predators such as ants and moths to predators such as birds and bats. Experimental testing with controlled diets is necessary to fully make this connection, however little is known about host specifics for lithosiines. Furthermore, although lithosiines are monophyletic, the lack of a fully resolved phylogeny hampers investigation into many of the shallower level relationships, e.g. those among genera and species, within the group.</p><p dir="ltr">I addressed these knowledge gaps using the subtribe Cisthenina. Members of this group have been used to investigate predator-prey interactions and been included in morphological and molecular studies. Thus, while the group still needs attention, there is an ample amount of legacy loci data available for its members. I used these data to investigate the evolutionary relationships at the genus level, but to increase resolution in my analyses I additionally sampled taxa throughout the group with a recently developed anchored hybrid enrichment (AHE) probe set. I combined it with the legacy loci to both increase taxon sampling and resolution. I confirmed that trees made strictly from the legacy loci were unsuccessful and resulted in poorly supported relationships that made little sense. The addition of the AHE data greatly helped resolve relationships, however, there remained areas that were poorly supported and they appear to be genera with only a few loci. Thus, there is still room for improvement, but this offers a way for moving forward in lithosiine research, particularly to involve others who may have limited funding, equipment, and/or personnel and may only be able to afford legacy loci in diverse collaborations.</p><p dir="ltr">As the AHE probe set worked well with genus-level relationships I further attempted to use it in species delimitation of the notorious <i>Hypoprepia fucosa</i>-<i>miniata </i>species complex. Members of this group are varying shades of yellows, oranges and reds and have a convoluted taxonomic history. I gathered and organized over 4,000 specimens and using the AHE probe set found support for five distinct species. Interestingly, I used other morphological characters such as genitalia, but found no differences between species and a large amount of intraspecific variation. This suggests other courtship behaviors may be present and external morphology, i.e., color patterns, remain the best way to identify species. As part of this I am describing a new species and raising one from subspecies and as species are now readily distinguishable, they can be used for further investigations into lithosiines.</p><p dir="ltr">I used a member of this complex, <i>H</i>. <i>fucosa</i> to then evaluate the use of species distribution models (SDMs) to better understand their niche and how it relates to plausible lichen hosts. I evaluated 17 lichen species from two lichen genera, <i>Physcia </i>(13 species) and <i>Myelochro</i><i>a </i>(4 species)<i>. </i>These genera were selected based on previous feeding assays and the metabolites found in them have also been found in <i>H</i>. <i>fucosa </i>further suggesting caterpillars may feed on them. SDMs typically only use environmental factors to define and predict species niches. I compared the niches described by traditional SDMs to assess how similar they were, but I also investigated the use of lichens as biotic factors in the models. I assessed the influence each lichen had on the moth’s distribution found the niche of every lichen to be significantly different than that of the moth and their inclusion in SDMs of <i>H</i>. <i>fucosa </i>to improve model performance. This suggests <i>H</i>. <i>fucosa </i>caterpillars to be polyphagous, but to have some connection with these lichens. Further investigation with live specimens is needed, but these results support this as an effective way to describe lithosiine niches to better understand lichen feeding.</p>
