Wittmann, Kelly Fabiane Spier January 2018 (has links)
This scientific research intended to comprehend what constitutes the knowledge about sustainability from undergraduate students taking the Business Administration course at UFRGS. The social, contextual, and material relations were explored throughout the activities from the Socio-environmental Business Management subject, based on the practice-based perspective, the knowing-practice concept, and the detailed description of the action taken. The concept of knowing-practice brings the idea of the social construction of knowledge, establishing that the practice and the theoretical knowledge have equal relevance. In order to analyse the teaching-learning processes and the development of knowledge in the area of sustainability, an ethnographic study was conducted in wich the practices from two of UFRGS's Business Administration classes were identified and described, from March to December of 2017. The descriptions which this research yielded reveal that knowledge and learning are built and rebuilt continuously by collective practices. The learning and organizational processes are interconnected and mediated by the practice. Knowledge is processual, intertwined, and emerges from situational actions. The findings in the field revealed a dynamic and heterogeneous interweaving of the elements (people, technology, ideas, discourse and actions) present in the context of the actions located in the classroom Knowing-in-practice were perceived in the discourse, when the students reported the substitution of unsustainable practices for other sustainable ones starting from the experiences lived in the Socio-environmental Business Management subject. Sustainable Education needs to recover sensitive to the construction of knowledge. The priority given to technical and normative knowledge dehumanizes and leaves aside the pre-verbal, emotional and affective knowledge. The constant craftsmanship of experiences needs to involve students and engage them in projects and actions that make sense. The collective construction of reality from reflective and collaborative processes with tangible results, would be a possibility to learn and build knowledge about sustainability. One way to understand social learning about sustainability is reflexivity. New discursive and political-pedagogical positions, less normative, specialized and individuals could collaborate with the construction of knowledge in the field of education and sustainability.

Gonzales, Rogério Leite January 2018 (has links)
As we move towards the third decade of the 21st century, the world faces significant and complex problems involving development and lifestyle, added by some more urgent challenges, such as increase in social inequalities, deforestation and extinction of species, climate change, and water scarcity and food safety. Although we can identify the results of the positivist and mechanistic model of development adopted in the Western world in particular, we have been unable to act in order to prevent the destruction of the planet. The education popularized in recent centuries with the aim of supporting and promoting the development model mentioned is being challenged in a global scale and has not been able to evolve. This exploratory study makes use of the Sustainable Education theory as a fulcrum in order to propose a Project-Based Learning (PBL) methodology in business administration courses and understand the effects of PBL when applied to sustainability teaching. The Theory of Experiential Learning (TEL) gives the theoretical support for understanding the processes experienced by the study subjects. Participant Action Research (PAR) was used as methodology to facilitate the design, implementation and monitoring of results, and verify the perceptions of students. During the twelve months of field research, it was possible to develop two application cycles of PBL, where more than 150 students built projects targeting a public wider than the university community, using sustainability as an overarching theme connecting propositions The study is based on the students' perception through continuous feedback and recursive processes of methodology adaptation in order to refine the methodological proposition of application of PBL and verify the students' perception regarding the proposition developed. Although the students were initially uncomfortable (given the progressive characteristic of the course, which puts the student in a position of prominence, often making students feel unable to or not interested in playing this role), this discomfort is generally resignified as learning at the end of the semester, after repeated processes of reflection on the experience. Similar to TEL and PAR, the intention of this thesis is to advance our understanding of the forms and results achieved with the use of PBL having sustainability as context, while being aware of how complex the theme is and how recursive the learning process is. We also acknowledge that there is room for improvement and adaptation of the methodology. We hope that this initiative may inspire fellow educators to make use of PBL or other active methodologies in order to assist them in the urgent transformation which is needed today.

Place-based education through partnerships between teachers and local actors : A nested case study exploring encounters between primary school teachers and local actors within the local wood industry in the Regional Natural Park of Gruyère Pays-d'Enhaut, Switzerland

Chappuis, Carole January 2023 (has links)
This nested case study inquires about the partnership between primary school teachers and local actors within the wood industry to perform a place-based educative lesson in the Swiss region of Gruyère Pays-d’Enhaut. Five different cases relate the encounter between a teacher and a local actor and enable the description of the particularities and outcomes of such partnerships. After observing activities and interviewing the members of the partnerships, the researcher analyzes the data by comparing the cases and using a Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) model to describe the system of activity resulting from the partnership.  The study reveals that a win-win effect is present in the partnership teacher/local actor, despite some tensions regarding the role of the members. While the teacher is using the partnership as a valuable resource to create a succession of meaningful experiences for learning, the local actor is using it to get some recognition for his work and share his message within the community. This implies requestioning the role of school in society, as the institution becomes helpful not only for the young generation but also to empower the local community and its cohesion.   Outcomes in terms of experiential learning are discussed, along with the processes of decolonization and reinhabilitation inherent to the approach. The relevance of such partnership is also discussed as a tool to implement Environmental and Sustainable Education (ESE), as the findings reveal its great potential for working on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and issues that concern the local community, englobing the values expressed by its members. The crucial role of the teachers to ensure the adequacy of the approach is enhanced.

Place-based education with Teaching Green Building for ESD : A qualitative study exploring the perceptions and place-based approaches of secondary teachers with the architectural features of green buildings for teaching ESD in green schools in Hanoi, Vietnam

Ho, Tran Anh Thu January 2020 (has links)
This qualitative research investigates how educators in Hanoi, Vietnam, perceive and utilize place-based approaches in teaching green buildings (TGBs) to deliver education for sustainable development (ESD) lessons. The study involved twelve middle school teachers from five green schools. The interview was the primary data collection of this research. After conducting interviews with participants, thematic analysis was employed to identify five key themes: (1) benefits, (2)limitations, (3) suggestions, (4) planning with TGBs, and (5) teaching activities with place-based education (PBE). The findings revealed that TGBs’ design patterns support their teaching and serve as a tool to foster a stronger connection with nature and the environment, ultimately enhancing pro-sustainable elements in ESD. However, these instructors encounter significant challenges rooted in the Vietnamese cultural context and a lack of support from the school. Teachers can implement some place-based teaching principles into their lessons, but to maximize the teaching potential of TGBs, they must place greater emphasis on the role of place within TGBs and encourage students to be more mindful when learning with TGBs.

O sentido da pedagogia por competências: de Bolonha à América Latina / The sense and the direction of Pedagogy based on Competencies: from Bologna to Latin America

Eiró, Maria Idati 05 November 2010 (has links)
This study is part of the research line Society, Economy and State of the Post Graduate Program of Integration in Latin America and its main objective is to discuss the new educational model implemented in the European Union and speculate about its deployments in Latin America. To contextualize the study is made a brief report of the expansion of higher education system and its association with the productive sector. We present the convergence of European higher education system, called Bologna Process, their levels (graduation degree, masters and PhD), their proposals for professional and student mobility and its system of equivalence of credits. The study turns to Latin America, its integration - mainly economic - and its higher education system. Following this context, competence is defined. Afterwards is defined Pedagogy based on Competencies, the teaching strategy recommended by Bologna through the Tuning project (European Union) and its corresponding Tuning Latin America, to attend economic interests. These projects are designed to determine points of reference for generic and specific competencies for the careers and its curricula. During the last decades the European Union is introducing vocational training as a strategic interest for organizational development. Latin America follows the same route. The main consequence is the widespread adoption of a higher education policy that does not consider the social and humanistic basis. The proposal is to adopt a Pedagogy based on Competencies that supports a long-lasting and sustainable education, economic growth and social development.

Principals' influences on teacher professional development for the integration of information and communication technologies in schools

Van Niekerk, Molly Patricia 02 May 2009 (has links)
The effective and sustainable use of ICTs (Information and Communication Technologies) in education has become commonplace as it is necessary to keep up with demands of the 21st century. ICT in education has become a tool for the empowerment of both teachers and learners for better teaching and learning. Although various ICT strategies and initiatives are implemented across South Africa, no system-wide effective and sustainable ICT integration in schools has yet come about. The pace of integration is slow and teachers avoid using ICT in their teaching and learning practices due to insufficient training. The aim of teacher professional development (TPD) is to improve teachers’ ICT application skills and knowledge, as well as to enable teachers to integrate ICT effectively in their classroom practices. Principals play a vital role in leading school reform, implementing innovations and bringing about change. The widespread assumption that high-quality leadership is an essential dimension of successful school management, leads to the question of how principals can influence teachers’ effective and sustainable integration of ICT into classrooms through TPD activities. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to determine the influence that principals have on teachers’ ICT integration through TPD. As school leadership is frequently cited as an essential for the successful integration of ICT into education, the very position of the principal is associated with authority, accountability and power. My initial research is based on Stoner’s (1999) Adapted Life Cycle Model of Learning Technology Integration. I used this model to illustrate the principals’ influence on teachers’ integration of ICT into education. From this review subsidiary questions emerged. Qualitative research through in-depth interviews formed the basis of an interpretative perspective, allowing principals to reflect on ICT integration, as well as their influence on teachers’ use of ICT. This study followed a basic grounded theory approach where I assumed an inductive stance and strived to derive meaning from the data in order to develop new theory. Pre-defined theoretical criteria determined the selection of the respondents to ensure validity of the data. The seven principals represented secondary schools across cultural and socio-economic levels. The perceptions and experiences of the principals were analysed, compared, and patterns of influence were identified. This study indicated that principals do not only influence the integration of ICT in classrooms through their leadership and management styles, but also through their attitude toward ICT integration, knowledge on related ICT and TPD issues, as well as their strategic thinking on ICT integration. Emerging findings on the role of the principal lead to new insights on the empowerment of teachers. The study resulted in a proposed theoretical framework that indicates the interrelatedness of the emerging patterns that influence the principals’ role through TPD. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2009. / Curriculum Studies / unrestricted

An assessment of the role of eco-schools in achieving whole school development through sustainability education

Carvello, Waheeda Maria 11 1900 (has links)
The Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002 reaffirmed the school as the centre of change and as critical for promoting sustainable education. The purpose of this research was to assess, firstly, how the Eco-Schools Programme can achieve whole school development by implementing sustainability education, and secondly, the feasibility of its incorporation into the formal school system. It examined what impact the South African Eco-Schools Programme, since 2003, has had on the implementation of sustainable education through whole school development. The qualitative evaluation research design was used and data was collected through interviews, questionnaires and narratives that included all role players. It noted the strengths of the programmes already in place and identified the challenges that still need to be addressed. The outcome of the study proves that the Eco-Schools Programme does achieve whole school development by implementing sustainability education and should be incorporated into the formal education system. / Further Teacher Education / M.A. (Education)
