Den blinda röda fläcken : Menstruation i svenska museisamlingar / The red blind spot : Menstruation in Swedish museum collections

Hahne, Ylva January 2021 (has links)
This study examines the existence of cultural heritage concerning menstruation in Swedish museum collections and in which contexts they have participated in exhibitions or been otherwise exposed to the public. The study also intends to find out whether taboos related to menstruation have affected the collection and exposure of the so-called "menstrual items". The empirical material consists of a survey sent to what can be said to be the general museum system in Sweden consisting of central museum, regional museum, municipal museum, city museum and three other cultural history museums with a response rate of 85.4% as 81 of 96 museums have participated. The study shows that 50.6% of the museums have menstrual items in the collections and that the majority of these museums had approximately 1-5 of such items. The most common item category was menstrual protection. 64.8% of museums with menstrual objects in the collections had exposed these to the public, usually only a few objects and the most common exhibition format was temporary exhibitions. The majority of menstrual items have been acquired in the years 1951-2021. Whether menstrual taboos have affected the existence of cultural heritage concerning menstruation in Swedish museums is difficult to ascertain based on this study. On the other hand, taboos may have affected the type of objects in museums' collections, as most of the material consists of menstrual protection, the task of which is to control the flow of menstruation, which may reflect society's relationship to menstruation, which often consists of feelings of shame about the subject.

[pt] PALAVRAS-TABU PARA UMA MELHOR COMPETÊNCIA INTERCULTURAL: POR QUE NÃO?: CONTEXTO, SIGNIFICADO E USO DE PALAVRÕES NO ENSINO DE PORTUGUÊS DO BRASIL COMO LÍNGUA ESTRANGEIRA NA ÍNDIA / [en] TABOO WORDS FOR BETTER INTERCULTURAL COMPETENCE: WHY NOT?: CONTEXT, MEANING AND USE OF PALAVRÕES IN THE TEACHING OF BRAZILIAN PORTUGUESE AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE IN INDIA

MANJULATA SHARMA 26 July 2021 (has links)
[en] This study on taboo words focuses on the observation of use of palavrões in nine episodes of the comedy series Porta dos Fundos (PdF) as portrayal of discursive practices of residents of the city of Rio de Janeiro (Cariocas), primarily through theories of: Lexiculture (Galisson, 1988); Semantic and Pragmatics (Goffman, 1967; Camara Jr., 1981; Jay, 2008; Carretero, 2011); Interculturalism (Bennett, 1998; Lewis, 2006; Hofstede, 2010; Ting-Toomey and Chung, 2012); and Foreign Language Teaching (Bennett, 1998; Byram, 2000; Ting-Toomey and Chung, 2012; Liddicoat, 2005, 2013). Through a qualitative interpretative methodology taboo words are analysed in nine episodes of the popular situational comedy online series Porta dos Fundos. Seven more frequently used taboo words by Cariocas, namely buceta, cu, caralho, foder, pau, porra and puta, are analysed and interpreted. The semantic and pragmatic use of taboo words demonstrates that they belong to the themes of sexual anatomy, sexual activity, scatology, illicit sex and animal names – although the latter ones are not classified as taboo words. They are compared with Hindi taboo words wherever applicable. The frequent use of taboo words in comedies, satires and other forms of entertainment, as well as in different types of communicative situations, is not, as generally perceived, i.e., a face threatening act (Goffman, 1967) in Portuguese, opposed to what happens in Hindi. The analysis also shows that the Cariocas, as multi-active Brazilians (Lewis, 2006), depending on the pragmatic variables, use taboo words as expressive speech acts to communicate emotions, not always carrying an offensive tone, as when used as interjections. A TbWs didactic proposal is presented for the teachers and students of Brazilian Portuguese as a Foreign Language in India.

[en] RELIGION, HISTORY AND TEMPORALITY IN THREE WRITINGS BY SIGMUND FREUD (1913- 1939) / [pt] RELIGIÃO, HISTÓRIA E TEMPORALIDADE EM TRÊS ESCRITOS DE SIGMUND FREUD (1913-1939)

PATRÍCIA DE OLIVEIRA BASTOS 20 April 2021 (has links)
[en] The present master s thesis seeks to analyze three writings of the Austrian psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud that deal with the issue of religion and its civilizing role: Totem and Taboo (1913), The Future of an Illusion (1927) and Moses and Monotheism (1939). Written after a moderate consolidation of psychoanalysis, each of these works addresses different questions about the religious phenomenon; nevertheless, there is a clear dialogue between them. Based on the observation that the development of the author s ideas about religion also meant a complexification of his reflections on the historical subject, we sought to highlight this process and to relate it to contents in the field of theory of history.

Funksionele aspekte van Afrikaanse eksosentriese komposita

Van Niekerk, Lariza 30 November 2006 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / An account of certain functional aspects of Afrikaans exocentric compounds is presented in this dissertation. This study builds on the preliminary survey presented in the dissertation 'n Korpusanalise van Afrikaanse eksosentriese komposita (Van Niekerk, 2001). Exemplary material is obtained from an extensive corpus, consisting of lexicographical and academic matter, as well as colloquial spoken language. Language is man's primary means of communication, used to convey knowledge and information. Lexical items are used to name and refer to all kinds of concepts, aspects, objects, persons and other references. Of particular importance to this study, however, is the expressive functionality of language, whereby it is used as an instrument to voice affect, judgement, opinion, perception and other emotional aspects. Exocentric compounds are singled out as lexemes of particular importance, utilized by Afrikaans speakers/writers to express themselves referentially and emotionally. In this study the researcher has endeavored to describe and explain certain aspects of exocentric compounds in terms of the cognitive process of conceptual blending, as explained in The way we think by Fauconnier and Turner (2003). Exocentric compounding is highly functional with regard to etnobiological naming of botanic and zoological references, especially as bahuvrihi compounds. More prominent, however, is the use of compounds to voice a wide variety of expressive values and connotations, both positive and negative. Humor is constantly referred to as probably the most important function of exocentric compounds. Other expressive functional aspects of exocentric compounds are discussed, such as insult, scorn and ridicule in nicknames and slurs, the softening effect of euphemism in contrast to the intensifying effect of dysphemism, idiomaticity, irony, et cetera, some of these aspects overlapping significantly. Exocentric compounds are creatively used as highly descriptive expressions in the informal register of colloquial Afrikaans, as well as in different dialects and sociolinguistic varieties. Based on observations in connection with the diverse use and optimal functionality of exocentric compounds in domains of every possible kind, the conclusion is reached that exocentric compounds is an essential part of the Afrikaans lexicon. / Afrikaans & Theory of Literature / D.Litt. et Phil.(Afrikaans)

Stereotypizace náctiletých matek v britských reality show / Stereotypes of Teenage Mothers in UK Reality Shows

Moore, Pavlína January 2019 (has links)
This thesis captures and describes the stereotypes of teenage and underage mothers regularly represented in British and American reality shows, broadcasted in the United Kingdom. The task of this paper is to explore and define the most frequent stereotypes presented by these TV shows on randomly selected samples. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the phenomenon of teenage and underage mothers in the UK as a result of underclass demonisation, poverty shaming and social stigma in the context of British culture and society. The second part of this thesis applies the theoretical findings and analyses the common stereotypes represented and displayed in particular reality shows broadcasted in the UK using qualitative content analysis.

Perversity on paper taboo, abjection and literature: Iain Banks' The wasp factory, Ian McEwan's The cement garden, and Irvine Welsh's Marabou stork nightmares

De Coning, Alexis January 2011 (has links)
This thesis explores the notion of perversity in literature, specifically with regard to representations of taboo and abjection in Iain Banks‟ The Wasp Factory, Ian McEwan‟s The Cement Garden, and Irvine Welsh‟s Marabou Stork Nightmares. Julia Kristeva‟s Powers of Horror: An Essay on Abjection, as well as her notion of revolt, constitute the central theoretical framework for my analysis. However, I also draw upon the concepts of monstrosity, grotesqueness and the uncanny in order to explicate the affect of abject fiction on the reader. I posit, then, that to engage with literary works that confront one with perversity, abjection and taboo entails exposing oneself to an ambiguous or liminal space in which culturally established values are both disrupted and affirmed. The subversive and revolutionary potential of the aforementioned novels is discussed with reference to the notion of the perverted Bildungsroman since, in their respective transgressions of taboos, the narrators of these novels disrupt social order, and their narratives end on a note of indeterminacy or the absolute finality of death, rather than self-actualisation. Moreover, in exposing the binaries of sex and gender as arbitrary and fluctuating, these narrators‟ perverse sexual and gender performativities gesture towards alternative modes of being (beyond social sanction), and invoke Kristeva‟s notion of individual revolt as a „condition necessary for the life of the mind and society‟.

Influence de la valence émotionnelle de stimuli auditifs sur l'orientation de l'attention / Influence of the emotional valence of auditory stimuli on attentional orienting

Bertels, Julie 11 May 2009 (has links)
