Social capital, philanthropy and identity : Implications for social economy

Sibony, Denis 26 November 2013 (has links)
How to explain variations in the level of donation in comparable countries? In all industrialized countries, the economic crisis of the 1980s encouraged the search for alternatives to the welfare state by encouraging third sector organizations to play a greater role in a partnership for the definition and implementation of public policies.Among Third sector organizations, philanthropic foundations provide a legal framework that allows people who wish to carry out acts of generosity by allocating a part of their personal wealth in the form of gift, for the purpose of general interest. Giving can be considered as a concrete expression of the cooperation between citizens for the common good. All democratic countries try to promote giving. The conventional explanations of the variation in level of gift among developed countries do not consider the gift as a social fact. We argue that the level of giving can't be explained by the sum of individual gifts that each respond to personal motives but by the state of the society whose cohesion is determined to both by the presence of social capital and the representation of identities.Social capital can be understood as " relationships, networks and norms that facilitate collective action." Social capital refers to relations that individuals establish them in social networks and the norms of reciprocity that arise from these relationships. This thesis is focused, first, on the level of social capital in economically developed countries and secondly on the meaning of the gift as a mode of representation of identity. It helps define social capital theory by highlighting the close relationship that unites the concept of the gift and hence the construction of identities. This analysis of the relationship between gift, identity ans social capital has direct implications for research in the field of civil society. Civil society is presented from two different perspectives. The first perspective, in a North American tradition, determines the Third sector to the sole condition of "non profit" sector. The second perspective, in an European tradition, consider social economy with organizations or enterprises within both profit and non-profit sector. These organizations and entreprises mix in their actions a plurality of economic logics.Based on the analysis of Polanyi on the embedding of the economy and its various forms of integration, associated with the Maussian logic of the gift, we try to shed light on the socio-economic dimension, or political dimension, of social economy. Social economy can be seen as a "gift economy", understood as a plural economy. Finally, the New Economic Sociology offers both an analysis of the reticular economy based on the presence and density of interpersonal ties and a cultural analysis of the economy that connects markets to values. It is possible to understand the social economy as a “social capital economy". Social capital is understood as an organizational factor and a meaning.

The first will highlight that resemble the manifestations of the gift in the Distant Support Project (PAD). The second aim is discuss the gift between strangers on the concept of Jacques Godbout and its manifestation in Distance Support Project (PAD). And the third is demonstrate the importance of gift for the structuring, maintenance and stainability of PAD. The dissertation will show how the project helps to generate links which is the main proposal of the gift, possibility also contributing to improve and maintain the project itself. Even being based in an unique initiative, many third sector organizations work with similar proposals expanding the findings of the work to these as well. Based on a case-study of the project in the municipality Salvador (Bahia) it is addressed to the sponsor showing that the gift is not only forwarded to the sponsor. It is a two way relationship. The Brazilian position of a no further supported country from international cooperation projects but as a donor country or player push managements to create strategies in order to mobilize Brazilian families to continue the project that should consider the gift. The work shows invisible relationships (gifted ones) that deserve to be observed.

Trabalho voluntário: considerações sobre dar e receber / The voluntary work:considerations about to gift and to receive

Andréa Freitas da Silva 19 October 2006 (has links)
This study was ellaborated in order to discuss the work of the associations of volunteers from two basic remises: a) which is the main motivation that guide people to become a volunteer and b) what do they await in return from this activity. I can say that the donation, as an anthropological category, is the basis of my theoretical analys. The empirical basis to investigate it I have obtained by the participant observation of the work of the non-governmental organization - NGO Rio Voluntário, where I have took part from the whole process of volunteering. I mean, I have observed since the first moments, in which the volunteers got in touch with this institution, when they were questioned about their expectation towards the activity, untill the moment they began to work as volunteers. Finalyy I can say that presently the volunteer activity has become an important trial in order to reinforce the civil actions to reduce the violence in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Murillo, Luis Felipe Rosado January 2009 (has links)
In this thesis, I turn to various agents in the Brazilian Free and Open Software community - developers, evangelists, politicians, and users - in order to discuss how gift economy works to shape commitments among them for the building of networks. Drawing on two and a half years of research, I take the angle of cultural practices and prestige to problematize the binary opposition between altruism and self-interest that dominates much of the literature. By focusing on social networks and the production of prestige, I am able to demonstrate how heterogeneous the composition of social networks are for the Brazilian economy of F/LOSS sharing. The theoretical and methodological orientation of Caillé's "Anthropologie du Don" and Pfaffenberger's and Ingold's "Anthropology of Technology" were combined to describe the community of Brazilian agents, engaged in three experiential domains: technical (producers), political (agents that promote F/OSS in the federal government), and cultural (artists whose work is empowered by F/OSS and the concept of Free Culture). The research work was conducted during the gatherings of F/OSS community in Brazil, as well as in electronic mailing lists, wikis, Internet sites and informal discussions via IRC. The development of the research points to the emergence of a new technical and political culture in Brazil, embodied by the "free software movement" therefore articulating political, cultural and technological practices.

ABSTRACT This investigation aims to analyze religion as solidarity network that articulates the experience of donation in low-income families in the neighborhood George Américo de Feira de Santana - BA. Butikslojalitet möter reciprocitet : Hur lättpåverkad är konsumenten? / Store loyalty meets reciprocity : How easily affected is the consumer?

Hultman, Viktoria, Schagerlind, Daniela January 2018 (has links)
Store loyalty is important for the stores as they can benefit from the loyal customers when it comes to marketing and profitability. Sales techniques are also important to the store as they are a way of influencing consumers in their buying process by providing services or giving the consumer gifts to create a feeling of guilt. The purpose of the report is to investigate how reciprocity can affect the consumer to switch their loyalty to a different store or enhance the loyalty to the store. To fulfill this purpose, we have answered our question. The question is how the sales technique reciprocity affect the consumers store loyalty when it comes to buying clothes. A qualitative method was used, where the survey consisted in interviews with six different representatives in the age group 20-30 years. The interview was designed to find out how respondents store loyalty was affected by reciprocity and if loyalty could be enhanced by reciprocity. From our empirical and theory, we could conclude that reciprocity affects customer loyalty and especially the principles of perceptual contrast and door in the face.

Du don de soi dans les soins : la dynamique vocationnelle et l' engagement dans la profession infirmière / The vocation, the self-sacrifice in the care : the calling et the involment in nursing job

Guillo, Jocelyn 08 November 2017 (has links)
Our study focuses self-sacrifice on nursing care and more specifically about the calling in nurse profession. As the work wore on, we search to know how people decided to become a nurseWe seek to know what motivates individuals to practice this profession exposed to what society is driving back today: vulnerability, old age, illness and death. The point of entry of our research has started around a terminology: the calling or vocation, to arrive at the postulate that the commitment in nursing requires a particular form of "love" which urges us to bring relief, attention and care to the vulnerable person. We know that to grasp this commitment is to accept the complexity. For nurses, we are confronted with an entanglement of wills, demands, choices, desires, dreams, idealistic representations, search for explanations, meaning that constitutes the basis on which actors engage. In this work, we looked at the initial commitment. In a comprehensive approach, we questioned nursing students and nurses about the time when they decided to take the plunge and chose to engage in the profession. The survey allowed us to collect a number of data and verbatim, which crossed with our personal data, allowed to explore this process. We compared the data collected with Marcel Mauss's theory of the gift. A cluster of orientations between freedom and constraint, gratuitousness and interest, have served us as the axis on which our whole demonstration has been mobilized. We went to seek the modes of meaning and incarnation of the nursing commitment to the prism of the conceptual mapping of the tetralogy of the gift. Keywords: to care, to cure, involvement, nurse, vocation, media visuals, gift, thankfulness.

Recebido e ofertado: a natureza dos hinos na religião do Santo Daime / Received and offered: the nature of the hymns in the religion of Holy Daime

Lucas Kastrup Fonseca Rehen 22 March 2007 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the music and its centrality in the Santo Daime rituals connected to the "Eclectic Center of the Fluent Universal Light Raimundo Sierra Irenaeus" (CEFLURIS), founded in the 1970s. The methodology is participant observation in "works of the hymnal," witnessed in the churches of the Sky Rio Mar Beach and Garden Beira-Mar and the whole ten in-depth interviews. In a chapter describing the field and another with the anthropological literature review of the Santo Daime, the thesis has three chapters of analysis. The first opens with a review of studies of ethnomusicology and then discusses the ritual of "hymn" and the relationship between time and music in the orientation of specific tasks during the ceremonies, which builds among other things, a new conception of "reality" due to the poetic-musical aspects allies psychotropic and ritual context as a whole. The following chapter discusses the native interpretation that describes the genesis of religious hymns as a "receipt" and its specificities, opposed to the idea of "musical composition". The statements of the group on the nature of thoughts, feelings and subjectivity, reflected in the notions of sacred and the hierarchical distinctions in the halls of the Daime churches, using the concept of "micro feelings of" the dialogue is built this time with the studies of anthropology of emotions. The third chapter of the analysis is focused on a discussion of the situations involving the supply of hymns in a complex circuit of gifts, when the Daime presents another member of the group through religious songs, connecting the world of spirits and men by the act the gift. This stage of work is also preceded by a review of anthropological literature, classical studies focused on the donation, especially the discussion of the exchange as a "grammar". All phases of the analysis are introduced by theoretical revisions, and the way work is organized, the topics covered in the initial chapters are continuously taken up during the discussions. The central argument of this dissertation is built on the following questions: What is the space occupied by music in the daily life of followers of the religion of Santo Daime and within the rituals? How do these songs are like bridges linking the sacred and profane spheres? As the songs guide the practice and the relationship between religious believers? How do Santo Daime hymns are able to elicit specific and express feelings? And finally: how music and feelings are articulated in the conformation of this type of religious experience?
