A comparison of African Evangelicalism with South African Black theology and Indian Dalit theology

Nakah, Victor 06 1900 (has links)
Evangelicals have an unquestionable heritage for involvement in the world and its social problems and the Bible provides a basis for a liberative gospel. For the God of the Bible is not only a God of love and peace, but also of justice and he is therefore on the side of the poor, oppressed and suffering. He has given us a spirit of engagement with the world as salt and light and not escapism. As we give serious consideration to the challenges of liberation theologies, we need to hear the voice of him who calls his people in every age to go out into the lost and lonely world (as he did), in order to live and love, to witness and serve like him and for him and that is what African Evangelicalism is all about. During 1970 years, by liberation theology criteria, D. Pedro Casaldáliga, Prelacy bishop¿s, appears like a central figure in the middle of political tension between the called Popular Church and Military Dictatorship, in the moment of large state implementation in the north of Mato Grosso state. The prophecy idea was crucial for Casaldáliga¿s actuation and for his political-pastoral project in the region. Organized around prophetic identity, the memories-histories narratives about the Prelacy and Casaldáliga forged a catholic culture of liberation on various scopes of religious practices. The contradictions and limits of Prelacy¿s prophetic identity and, at the end, the conformation of this prophetic identity up against the change of political-social context in São Félix do Araguaia in the 1980 and 1990 decades are the matters dialed here / Mestrado / Historia Cultural / Mestre em História

The present thesis aims to show that along with the introduction of the ecological paradigm, theological though of Leonardo Boff has been opened to the so called Theology of Religious Pluralism. This research integrates the previous content of Paulo Agostinho Master’s survey which had already pointed out to Leonardo Boff’s paradigm shift. In this way, theology of Leonardo Boff has been interpreted as “Teoanthropocosmic Theology”. The claim here is that this theology has successfully realized practical and theological articulation between Theology of Liberation and Theology of Religious Pluralism. It has also been pointed out that although Theology of Liberation had been opened to dialogue within diverse field like cosmic christology, anthropology, spirituality, trinity understanding and ecclesiology, only after the years of 1990/93 it has started been properly considered as a Theology of Religious Pluralism. This thesis finally claims that Boff’s theology, within ecological paradigm, a “Theology of Liberation and Religious Pluralism” and articulates both Theology of Liberation and Theology of Religious Pluralism. It is also claimed that within Religious Pluralism Paradigm, Boff’s theology could be inserted within the category of “teoantropocosmic inclusive pluralism”. Another claim of the present thesis is that the articulation of “Theology of Liberation” and “Theology of Religious Pluralism” drives us into praxis which takes two complementary directions: the first one is that of dialogue which promotes “re-ligação”, that is to say, the encounter of the variety of world religions, thus recouping the universality of Christianity and postulating the principle of pluralism; the second one is that of Liberation which through mystic, fraternal and ethic “dialogação” sustains and promotes action in this world and provides earth sustainability and makes possible a better world full of peace and human dignity, thus promoting liberation of oppressed human beings, especially poor people.

[en] The God of Jesus Christ always calls us to stand for the victims of this world. In light of the empirical experience, it is a responsible decision to mirror God’s Compassion and Mercy towards the victims of history, which, in an engagingly life, allows us to take on the burden of reality, carry it and take charge of its liberating transformation. This means, making theology from witnesses enriches and deepens the theology of texts. Therefore, it becomes relevant to believe in order to understand, as well as to understand in order to believe. This Doctoral Thesis, God s Compassion and Mercy. An ethical-mystic-prophetic dimension of Jon Sobrino s Theology focuses on their hope and the promise to rescue them as a key to theological hermeneutic reading. We recognize and affirm that in Jon Sobrino s theology there is an urgent need for theological zeal centred in the mystery of the merciful presence of God in history. In this sense, it broadens his gaze to the new faces of victims around the world.

[en] HE BODY IS WHAT UNITES US: AN INTEGRAL THEOLOGICAL ANTHROPOLOGY FROM LATIN AMERICAN LIBERATION THEOLOGY / [pt] O CORPO É O QUE NOS UNE: UMA ANTROPOLOGIA TEOLÓGICA INTEGRAL A PARTIR DA TEOLOGIA DA LIBERTAÇÃO LATINO-AMERICANA

SUZANA REGINA MOREIRA 15 June 2021 (has links)
[en] This research seeks to present an overview of the way the body is present and reflected in Latin American liberation theology. We set from the theological anthropology developed on this continent, with the methodological reference of the preferential option for the poor based on the analysis of the bibliographic content relevant to the subject. To develop the overview of this theme, we have embarked on a journey of contextualization of the genesis of this Latin American theology since colonization, through the Second Vatican Council, and arriving at the formulations specific to Latin-American liberation theology, pointing to the presence of the body and struggle for justice and dignity. Then, we dive into the consequent ramifications of this liberation theology, demonstrating how the body is the guiding thread that differentiates these peripheral theologies and what justifies their political and social activism, bringing a special focus to feminist theology that, with women s body presence in theology, brings great contributions to theology, the Church and society as a whole. Finally, harvesting this entire journey, we demonstrate the intrinsic relationship between body and spirit, through the interpretation of Christology and spirituality in liberation theology. We have not exhausted the subject of what could be a Latin American theology of the body, but we hope to present the body as the backbone of our liberation theology which, when concerned with the concrete reality of the poor, oppressed, vulnerable and wronged people, is in fact worrying precisely about their bodies that suffer poverty, oppression, violence, and injustices.

A Morula tree between two fields : the commentary of selected Tsonga writers

Maluleke, Samuel Tinyiko 06 1900 (has links)
The thesis of this study is that indigenous Tsonga literature forms a valid and authoritative commentary on missionary Christianity. In this study, the value of literary works by selected Tsonga writers is explored in three basic directions: (a) as a commentary on missionary Christianity, (b) as a source of and challenge to missiology, and (c) as a source of a Black missiology of 1 i berat ion. The momentous intervention of Swiss missionaries amongst the Vatsonga, through the activities of the Swiss Mission in South Africa (SMSA) must be granted. Similarly, its abiding influence formerly in the Tsonga Presbyterian Church (TPC), now the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in South Africa (EPCSA), the Vatsonga in general and Tsonga literature in particular must be recognized. But our missiological task is to problematise and explore both missionary instrumentality and local responses variously and creatively. The first chapter introduces the thesis, central issues of historiography and ideology as well as an introductory history of the SMSA. In the second chapter, the commentary of Tsonga writers through the media of historical and biographical works on missionary Christianity is sketched. Selected Tsonga novels become the object of inquiry in the third chapter. The novels come very close to a direct evaluation of missionary Christianity. They contain commentary on a wide variety of issues in mission. The fourth chapter concentrates on two Tsonga plays and a number of Tsonga poems. In the one play, missionary Christianity is likened to garments that are too sho· ~' whilst in the other, missionary Christianity is contemptuously ignored and excluded - recognition granted only to the religion and gods of the Vatsonga. The fifth and final chapter contains the essential commentary of indigenous Tsonga literature on missionary Christianity as well as the implications for both global and local missiology. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / D. Carisma e instituição: relações de poder na Renovação Carismática Católica do Brasil. / Charism and institution: relations of power in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal of Brazil.

Ela investe tanto contra o clero conservador quanto contra o progressista. / This study presents an internal analysis of the Catholic Pentecostalism in Brazil, that is, an analysis of its power relations with the Catholic hierarchy and, by extension, with the Theology of Liberation. The main difficulty found in this work was in terms of how revealing and interpreting the intricate universe of power relations existing in the movement. Our findings are based on the assumption that the Charismatic Renewal has developed a kind of subtle autonomy that gave it dynamism and the ability to expand, because of the introduction of non-traditional religious elements as well the development of power mechanisms and practices that oppose to the primacy of the Catholic Church hierarchy. These religious elements are the charismatic gifts that represent a possibility of contact with God without the intermediation of priests. The Charismatic autonomy represents a contestation to the structure of power in the Church. The said autonomy contests both the conservative and the progressive clergy. The Charismatic Renewal has never obtained a hegemonic adhesion of the Brazilian Catholic hierarchy, although it has received, from the beginning, the formal support from the Vatican. The classification of the movement as "neoconservative" is directly related to the Catholicism of the CEBs and is, therefore, an interpretation of researchers that are identified with the so-called progressive wing of the Brazilian Catholic Church. This same view considers charismaticism as a reaction to the protestant Pentecostalism and the Theology of Liberation. Such classification is inadequate and cannot be justified when compared to facts. As for the institutional relationship between the Charismatic Renewal and the National Conference of Bishops in Brazil, it has always been marked by tensions that are directly related to the autonomy of the movement. It took CNBB (National Conference of Bishops in Brazil) more than twenty years to give their formal opinion about RCC (Catholic Charismatic Renewal), because of other priorities concerning the projects of the Progressive Church. When, at last, the Conference of Bishops published the Document 53. critics claimed that the document showed text inconsistency and had a disciplinary approach, basically. This Document clearly reflects the level of power relations existing between the two segments of the church.

[pt] A TEOLOGIA POLÍTICA EM JOHANN BAPTIST METZ: INSTRUMENTO DA TEOLOGIA FUNDAMENTAL PARA UMA PRÁXIS LIBERTADORA / [en] POLITICAL THEOLOGY IN JOHANN BAPTIST METZ: INSTRUMENT OF FUNDAMENTAL THEOLOGY FOR A LIBERATING PRAXIS

JOSE DIOGENES DIAS GONCALVES 17 May 2021 (has links)
[en] The research presents the main themes of the theological-political thought of Johann Baptist Metz that serves as a matrix for rethinking the responsibility and praxis of fundamental theology. Such thinking not only addresses the issue of human suffering, but seeks to ground the commitment of Political Theology, the Church and Christianity as a foundational element of God s salvific project in the person of Jesus Christ. The structure of the dissertation is composed of three parts. Starting with a short biography of the author, discusses the term New Political Theology which undergoes a hermeneutics change rescuing it as an effective theological instrument. The second block deals with the applicability of Fundamental Theology, starting from the questions that surround the theme of theodicy in the post-Enlightenment context. The last part deals with the Memoria Passionis; the solidarity with the suffering of others cannot allow the pain to be forgotten, as well as the death of those who suffer should not be meaningless. The thesis sought to present the thought of Johann Baptist Metz highlighting three major thematic groups which certainly are not exhaustive, but indicative. The author s thinking plays an important role in the course of Christianity. His Political Theology is highly relevant and current to think theologically the unfair questions of society, such as inequality and the growing migration of people. It is hoped that the present work may arouse the interest of deepening in the thinking of this prolific author, who has much to contribute to the theology of Latin America and the world.
