Buckwalter, Elvis 05 May 2009 (has links) (PDF)

Private lives : the presentation of marriage in English drama 1930-1990

Burns, Glenn, English, Australian Defence Force Academy, UNSW January 1999 (has links)
Despite the broadening of the subject matter of English drama in its ???new wave??? period from the late nineteen fifties, it is striking to see how much of enduring mainstream English drama has a domestic focus. The purpose of this thesis is to provide the first full-length study of marriage on the English stage from 1930-1990. The thesis examines the way in which a number of important playwrights have fashioned drama from the conflict between the public, or institutional, functions of marriage and the private, or relational, functions of marriage. The thesis places this conflict into historical context. This will show that the conflict between the private and public aspects of marriage is not one of clearly opposed opposites but one that is made dynamic by significant social and legal changes to the status, function and conventions of marriage. The thesis also demonstrates that this conflict is further complicated by class considerations and by the particular circumstances of each marital partnership. From the wealth of material available, I have chosen to examine in detail the work of seven playwrights who have made significant contributions to domestic drama or domestic comedy. Playwrights have been selected because their plays gained a strong audience on first performance and because, through numerous revivals and through publication of scripts, they have earned an enduring place in English drama. John Osborne???s Look Back in Anger, which in 1956, ushered in the ???new wave???, is pivotal play for discussion. The previous generation is represented by Noel Coward, J. B. Priestley and Terence Rattigan. The ???new wave??? and its aftermath are represented by Harold Pinter, Tom Stoppard and, finally Alan Ayckbourn. Despite a wide variety of approaches to the topic of marriage, these writers tend to assume a middle class audience and to follow or adapt the traditions of realism or comedy of manners. This thesis argues that despite real, even radical, changes to marriage, to accepted sexual practices and to the status of women in the sixty years under discussion, the mainstream theatre has tended to be conservative in its presentation of marital and sexual matters, especially in continuing to reinscribe a public/private opposition determined by gender.

Charles Dickens and Mark Twain, the English and American Perspective on Child Heroes Portrayal

MACKOVÁ, Vanda January 2015 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the portrayal of child heroes in English and American literature, in works of Charles Dickens and Mark Twain. The chosen novels are Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. These novels are analysed in the themes of child labour and poverty, racism, religion, the view of the world by children in contrast to the adult perspective, upbringing and education. The last chapter deals with the humour of both novelists. Thus the emphasis is put on the social aspect of the literary output of Dickens and Twain. The main aim of the thesis is to depict these child heroes and their acting in the literature of the 19th century, and to reflect the life experience of both authors.

This research broaches part of the work of the composer, arranger, singer, player, writer and performer Antônio José Santana Martins, popularly known as Tom Zé. It was proposed a transdisciplinar analysis about his artistic production placed between the years 1967 and 1976, discussing five records of the musician, revealers of the transition between these two moments, since the beginning of his career (1967) - in his tropicalist phase - until his album Estudando o samba, recorded in 1976. This LP showed large importance because, according to the composer H. J. Koellreutter (1915-2005), it inaugurated - through the music Toc - a new proposal in the compositional structure of the artist, that fits in the Relativistic aesthetics of Imprecise and Paradoxical and in the concept of quadridimensional time of the German theorist. This concept subsequently directed the research to other notions associated with paradigm shifts, observed both in art and in modern science (quantum and relativistic physics) of the XX and XXI centuries. It was sought in this study, to list elements in Tom Zé’s opus consistent with this paradigm shift, in order to understand more deeply the aesthetic and compositional changes of the artist in the time frame selected. As a strictly conventional technical and musical analysis would not be capable to involve this multimidiatic artist’s totality work, his job was also analyzed under aesthetic, historical and socio-political aspects that encompass, justify and can contribute to his music comprehension. Therefore, also the lyrics, performances, clothing were verified, in addition to his discourses; considering even materials like articles, interviews, album covers etc. Thus, it was possible to observe the different nuances and gradations of the composer in his musical transformations

Reporting Live From Edge City: The Dynamic "Statuspheres" of Tom Wolfe's America

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: During the 1960s, American youth were coming of age in a post–war period marked by an unprecedented availability of both money and leisure time. These conditions afforded young people new opportunities for exploring fresh ways of thinking and living, beyond the traditional norms of their parents' generation. Tom Wolfe recognized that a revolution was taking place, in terms of manners and morals, spearheaded by this latest generation. He built a career for himself reporting on the diverse groups that were developing on the periphery of the mainstream society and the various ways they were creating social spaces, what he termed “statuspheres,” for themselves, in which to live by their own terms. Using the techniques of the New Journalism—“immersion” reporting that incorporated literary devices traditionally reserved for writers of fiction—Wolfe crafted creative non–fiction pieces that attempted not only to offer a glimpse into the lives of these fringe groups, but also to place the reader within their subjective experiences. This thesis positions Wolfe as a sort of liminal trickster figure, who is able to bridge the gap between disparate worlds, both physical and figurative. Analyzing several of Wolfe's works from the time period, it works to demonstrate the almost magical way in which Wolfe infiltrates various radical, counterculture and otherwise “fringe” groups, while borrowing freely from elements across lines of literary genre, in order to make his subjects' experiences come alive on the page. This work attempts to shed light on his special ability to occupy multiple spaces and perspectives simultaneously, to offer the reader a multidimensional look into the lives of cultural outsiders and the impact that they had and continue to have on the overarching discussion of the American Experience. Ultimately, this paper argues that by exposing these various outlying facets of American culture to the mainstream readership, Wolfe acts as a catalyst to reincorporate these fringe elements within the larger conversation of what it means to be American, thereby spurring a greater cultural awareness and an expansion of the collective American consciousness. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.A. English 2014

The issue related to adapt novels to cinema has gained special attention of researchers on the fields of Literary Studies, Comparative Literature and Cinema Studies, nevertheless this study is conceived on Literary Studies field. The historical facts raised on the novel and transposed into the film refers to issues on postmodernity and highlight that the critic of the past, in terms of rewriting those facts, has a significant importance. The research is qualitative and for the comparative analysis of the novel and the movie, the corpus was referring to fotograms, the movie script and the excerpts of the novel in order to analyze how authors transpose the sense of smell in each of artistic products, the novel and the movie. It was perceived that the use of metaphors, comparisons and other figures of speech, overriding memory, has the relation with the process of representing the senses, with the focus on smell, in Patrick Süskind´s novel. Concerning to the movie, it was possible to ascertain that the protagonist was taken as more human and that transposition of the sense of smell came from the montage of images and the overriding of memory from the specific sequences as well as from the narrative aspects of it by means of illumination and soundtracks.

Análise do desenvolvimento de micorrizas arbusculares em mutantes hormonais de tomateiro (Lycopersicon esculentum cv Micro-Tom) / Analysis of arbuscular mycorrhiza development in hormonal mutants of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum cv Micro-Tom)

Agustin Zsögön 17 April 2006 (has links)
The aim of the present work was to study the effect that alterations in hormonal sensitivity and metabolism in a host plant could have in the development of arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM). In this regard, a series of hormone-related mutants introgressed in the tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) cultivar Micro-Tom were inoculated with the fungus Glomus clarum, in two different levels of substrate P. Three experiments were performed, using the genotypes Never ripe (partially insensitive to ethylene), epinastic (ethylene overproducer), bushy root (partially insensitive to cytokinin), diageotropica (partially insensitive to auxin), procera (gibberellin hypersensitive) and notabilis (ABA-deficient). The following parameters were assessed: mycorrhizal colonization percentage, shoot and root dry mass, under conditions of either sufficient or insufficient P on the substrate. Further analyses, such as root morphology, P dosage and gene expression quantification (through Real-Time PCR), were performed on the genotypes which presented the most alterations in mycorrhizal development, namely Never ripe and epinastic. It was concluded that the hormone showing most influence on AM formation was ethylene. Its effect appears to be either stimulatory o inhibitory. In any case, defense gene expression alone could account for the observed differences.
