This dissertation is inserted in the context of the debate regarding translation and has two objectives: the first, more general, is to make the (re)acknowledgement of the poetics of translating, the theoretical project of the French thinker Henri Meschonnic (1932-2009); the second, more specific, is to revisit, based on this (re)acknowledgment of the poetics of translating, three classic themes in the debate regarding translation in the light of this theory, namely: translation itself, fidelity and equivalence. The insertion of this discussion in the debate about translation is justified by the fact that the poetics of translating presents a different point of view from those most recognized today in both academic discussion and common sense about what translation is. This is due to the fact that the poetics of translating assumes and indicates a reflection on language that modifies the idea of translating. Language, in the poetic scope, is not regarded by the common terms of a language (such as form and meaning, for example), which represent a reductive view of language, discontinuous in nature. On the contrary, the poetics of translating places translation – and language itself – in the field of discourse, which is of the order of the continuum, hence modifying the general idea about what language is, and consequently what is there to translate. In this way, this dissertation presents initially the bases of the poetic thought, which concern a non-reductive view of language. In this context, the meschonniquian reading of the ideas of Wilhelm von Humboldt, Ferdinand de Saussure and Émile Benveniste is presented to support this non-reductive view of language. From this construction, I turn to the elements of the poetics of translating so that the theoretical positioning that Meschonnic presents to discuss translation becomes clear. This is a point of extreme relevance because it indicates how the system of poetic thinking works, allowing its (re)acknowledgement. Lastly, the final discussion comes as a consequence of these previous reflections. If poetics modifies the knowledge about translation, it is necessary to demonstrate how this is done in comparison with the ideas about the themes proposed from the point of view of Traductology so that one understands how the poetics of translating introduces elements that renew the debate around these subjects commonly disseminated in discussions of this nature.

[pt] O objetivo desta dissertação é analisar a tradução para o inglês de
A vida como ela é…, uma coletânea de contos de Nelson Rodrigues,
originalmente publicados como coluna diária no jornal Última Hora de
1951 a 1961. Essa tradução, Life As It Is, foi feita pelo tradutor Alex Ladd
e publicada nos Estados Unidos pela editora norte-americana Host
Publications em 2009. O estudo foi informado pela teoria dos
polissistemas de Itamar Even-Zohar (1990), pela abordagem descritivista
da tradução de Gideon Toury (1995), pelas ideias de André Lefevere, em
especial o conceito de patronagem (1992), e pela proposta de
categorização de estratégias tradutórias de referentes culturais elaborada
por Javier Franco Aixelá (1996). A análise de Life As It Is enfocou tanto a
sua função no polissistema literário norte-americano como o produto em
si, avaliando-se os efeitos das escolhas tradutórias de Alex Ladd a partir
da identificação dos itens de especificidade cultural segundo a
categorização de Franco Aixelá. / [en] The objective of this thesis is to analyze the English translation of A
vida como ela é…, a collection of short stories written by Nelson
Rodrigues and originally published as a daily column in the Última Hora
newspaper between 1951 and 1961. This translation, Life As It Is, was
carried out by the translator Alex Ladd and published in the United States
by Host Publications in 2009. This study was informed by Itamar Even-
Zohar’s polysystem theory (1990), Gideon Toury’s descriptive approach to
translation (1995), the ideas of André Lefevere, particularly the concept of
patronage (1992), and the proposal of categorizing translation strategies of
cultural references, created by Javier Franco Aixelá (1996). The analysis
of Life As It Is focused both on its function within the North American
literary polysystem as well as the product itself, by applying Franco
Aixelá’s categorization of culture-specific items in order to evaluate the
effects of the translating choices made by Alex Ladd.

[en] TRANSLATED LITERATURE IN FOCUS: TONI MORRISON AND BELOVED IN THE BRAZILIAN CULTURAL CONTEXT / [pt] LITERATURA TRADUZIDA EM FOCO: TONI MORRISON E BELOVED NO CONTEXTO CULTURAL BRASILEIROLUCIANA DE MESQUITA SILVA 17 December 2015 (has links)
[pt] Esta tese aborda a literatura da escritora afro-americana Toni Morrison
traduzida no Brasil.
[en] This Ph.D. dissertation addresses the African-American female author Toni
Morrison and her translated literature in Brazil. It focuses on the Brazilian
translations of her novel Beloved (1987), published under the title Amada. The
first translation was done by Evelyn Kay Massaro and launched by the publishing
houses Best Seller and Circulo do Livro, in 1989 and 1993 respectively. The
second one, by José Rubens Siqueira, was published by Companhia das Letras in
2007 and, subsequently, in 2011. This study will draw upon both Descriptive
Translation Studies and the Cultural Studies, complemented by Lawrence
Venuti s view on retranslations. Accordingly, this research aims to determine and
understand the systemic function occupied by Morrison and the translations of
Beloved in the Brazilian cultural context in comparison with the function of the
writer and her novel in the source system, the United States. Therefore, reception
aspects, focusing on critics, professors, other authors and translators discourses,
as well as the role of the publishing houses and patronage, among other factors, in
the respective contexts will be brought to light. Moreover, an analysis of the
paratexts and the textual resources relative to Amada s editions will be proposed,
considering the relationships among literature, language and ethnic-racial issues.

[en] THE TRANSLATION OF BUDDHIST SCRIPTURES IN CHINA: THE FIRST WAVE / [pt] A TRADUÇÃO DAS ESCRITURAS BUDISTAS NA CHINA: A PRIMEIRA ONDAANGELA FLEURY DA FONSECA 11 January 2011 (has links)
[en] This dissertation - The translation of Buddhist scriptures in China: the
first wave - investigates the translation of Buddhist philosophy, which was the
first great opening of China to a foreign culture. This opening started in the
second century with the first translations of the Buddhist scriptures from Sanskrit
into Chinese and lasted until the eleventh century. Considered by the scholars the
first great wave of translations in the country, it was a fundamental chapter in the
construction of its culture; to this day, a great deal of Chinese life and culture -
literature, philosophy, sculpture, music, to mention only a few areas - is
permeated by Buddhism. This present study focuses more specifically on this first
wave, but, by contextualizing it, presents the other translational waves through a
brief description of Chinese history, before and after the arrival of Buddhism.
Besides the extreme singularity in the way it happened, which makes it so
enriching to our discipline, this translational wave was and still is a very fertile
field for theoretical discussions of translation.

[en] THE PARATEXT AND THE TRANSLATOR`S VISIBILITY / [pt] O PARATEXTO E A VISIBILIDADE DO TRADUTORMARILUCE FILIZOLA CARNEIRO PESSOA 15 September 2010 (has links)
[pt] Este trabalho tem como objetivo valorizar o paratexto como espaço de
visibilidade do tradutor.
[en] The purpose of this dissertation is to stress the role of the paratext as a
space of visibility for the translator. The study is based on the theoretical approach
of Descriptive Translation Studies, emphasizing the concept of translation norms
developed by Gideon Toury. From the study of norms, it is possible to understand
and explain the translators’ behavior and the guidelines that govern their tasks,
which makes the process of mediation as well as the agent of this mediation
especially visible. According to Toury, translation norms may be reconstructed
from two major sources: the translated texts themselves and the semi-theoretical
and critical formulations made by translators, editors and publishers. From the
second of these sources, a corpus comprised of translators’ prefaces, introductions
and notes was selected. The analysis of the translators’ discourses aims at
reconstructing the norms that govern their tasks. Lawrence Venuti has argued that
the translator disappears behind a fluent text that erases the foreignness of the
original text. Accordingly, he proposes an approach to translation that resists
fluency, stylistic and idiomatic norms as a way of promoting the translators’
visibility. In contrast, the present study argues that it is in the paratext, rather than
in the translated text itself, that the translator may become visible in society. This
study seeks also to show that different cultures require different approaches and
that theories developed in a particular system should not be applied to other
systems without the proper adjustments to their specific contexts.

This research attempts to relate translation studies to psychology, anthropology, biology, cognitive linguistics and literature. Our objective is to demonstrate the relationship between the theory of prototype and translation. To do so, we discuss the current theoretical focus on the acquisition and learning of the first and second
languages, bilingualism, the training of the translator, types of translation, and the linguistic competence related to translation. We also present the psychological cognitive processes in the act of translate: introspection, perception, abstraction, memory, thought, conceptualizing. We present the role of the prototype effect and of equivalence in translation, relating them and evaluating them, concluding that there
are levels of equivalence more or less acceptable (gradient effect / prototypical)
according to the judgment of the translator and that there are invariable lines (prototypes) that are perceived and perpetuated by readers and translators. So as to corroborate with the hypothesis, we analyze translated texts, seeking the effect and the presence of the prototype and we conclude that the basic level is of the highest occurrence, and reflects the net of constructions that guide the translator’s thought and memory.

[en] TRANSLATING POETRY: ADÍLIA LOPES AND FRANK O HARA / [pt] TRADUZINDO POESIA: ADÍLIA LOPES E FRANK O HARABEATRIZ CABRAL BASTOS 16 June 2015 (has links)
[en] This thesis reflects about the poetry of Adília Lopes and Frank O Hara from the perspective of translation. The poems by Adília are selected from a book first published in 1987 titled O marquês de Chamilly (Kabale und Liebe) where she refers to Mariana Alcoforado s Cartas Portuguesas. Some of the important aspects of Adília s poetry are her melancholic humour, her expeditious rhythm and a language that is considered by many as colloquial and ordinary. The poems by Frank O Hara are selected from his Collected Poems (1995). A New York School poet, O Hara became known for his I do this I do that poems, apparently written in a spontaneous manner. Considering that a translation desires to reproduce the general effect of the original poem the translator s reading should thus pay careful attention to its material effects such as those triggered by the presence of rhythm, sound and rhyme. The thesis presents theoretical approaches to art and poetry that focus on the materiality of poetry (the concept of presence as developed by Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht is especially relevant to this discussion). It also examines the work of three intellectuals that not only develop theories about poetry translation but are themselves also translators: Henri Meschonnic, Haroldo de Campos and Paulo Henriques Britto. After establishing a theoretical and practical basis for the translation of poetry, chapters 4 and 5 present the work of each poet, followed by the poems and translations themselves. Each poem is followed by a commentary in which the difficulties and choices of translation are discussed.

[pt] A comparação das anotações manuscritas com a primeira
(1812) e a última
edição (1857) dos contos reunidos por Wilhelm e Jacob
Grimm, no livro Kinderund
Hausmärchen, evidenciou um processo de leitura e tradução,
cujo teor
melancólico sugere a preocupação em delinear uma unidade
não apenas fraternal,
mas também da própria nação que se desenhava na escrita do
acervo. Assim, a
partir do par conceitual leitura e tradução, o estudo
visou sondar sua construção,
mediante a pesquisa comparada da primeira e última edição,
bem como dos
apontamentos recolhidos no intitulado Manuscrito de
Ollenberg. A perspectiva
interdisciplinar adotada, se permitiu entreve a adaptação
das narrativas ao público
leitor contemporâneo, também possibilitou constatar o
conflito inerente ao ajuste
exigido pelo novo destinatário. Outrossim, verificando o
caráter inédito no Brasil
de algumas das narrativas inventariadas pelos Irmãos,
especialmente daquelas
centradas sobre a melancolia, prosseguiu-se à tradução das
narrativas ilustrativas
do processo. Desse modo, pôde-se perseguir a elaboração de
uma escrita que,
paulatinamente, se liberta do peso do texto considerado
original. / [en] The comparison of the handwritten notes of the first
(1812) and the last
(1857) editions of the tales collected by Wilhem and Jacob
Grimm in Kinder-und
Hausm-rchen revealed a reading and translation process
whose melancholic style
suggests an intention to delineate not only an unit of
fraternity, but also an unit of
the nation that was being portrayed in the collectanea.
Therefore, considering the
conceptual pair of reading and translation, this study
aimed at exploring the
construction of the collectanea by comparing its two
editions and the notes
gathered in the book Ollenberg´s Manuscript. The
interdisciplinary perspective of
the study made it possible to catch a sight of the
adaptation of the narratives in
order to match its contemporary readership and to evidence
the inherent conflict
present in the process of adjusting the work to its new
readership. Moreover, after
having verified that some tales collected by the Grimm
Brothers remained
unpublished in Brazil - specially those marked by
melancholy -, those pieces of
work were translated into Portuguese in this study. As a
result, this study also
made it possible to understand the process of creating a
work that gradually frees
itself from the burden of the concept of what an original
text is.
