[pt] A TRADUÇÃO TEATRAL ALÉM DO TEXTO: TRADUZINDO THE PITMEN PAINTERS / [en] THEATRE TRANSLATION BEYOND THE TEXT: TRANSLATING THE PITMEN PAINTERSCLAUDIA SOARES ALVARES DA CRUZ 16 May 2022 (has links)
ampliação do tema da tradução teatral aqui colocada também se volta para a cena
teatral brasileira e, para isso, se apoia em abordagens e conceitos da vertente
sociológica dos estudos da tradução. Como ponto de partida para as discussões aqui
propostas, é parte integrante deste trabalho a tradução comentada de The Pitmen
Painters (Os pintores da mina), peça escrita por Lee Hall em 2007, nunca publicada
ou encenada no Brasil. Ao criar um dialeto literário para seus pitmen painters, Hall
impulsiona a presente pesquisa na direção de estudos dialetais nos dois idiomas
aqui contemplados – o inglês de Hall e o português brasileiro da tradução – e,
consequentemente, para estudos relacionados à tradução de variantes linguísticas. / [en] This dissertation contributes to discussions about concepts and practices involved
in the translation of theatrical texts, proposing greater integration between two
fields of knowledge directly related to it: translation studies and dramatic arts.
Theoretical sources from both fields are used, particularly ones that operate at their
points of intersection. With the aim of building on the debate around texts for the
stage and their translation, this dissertation suggests ways of expanding the theatre
experience beyond its linguistic dimension through the use of extratextual elements,
while also proposing closer involvement of the translator with the theatre
production process. This expanded conception of theatre translation is enriched by
an investigation of the Brazilian theatre milieu, drawing on concepts and
approaches derived from sociologically oriented studies of translation. A starting
point for the discussions proposed here and an integral part of the work is an
annotated translation of Lee Hall s 2007 play, The Pitmen Painters, which has not
been published or staged in Brazil to date. The literary dialect Hall creates for his
pitmen painters leads this research toward the study of dialects in both languages
involved here - Hall s English and Brazilian Portuguese – and thereby the
translation of linguistic variants.

[en] The research entitled Because they look like girls or act like girls: erasure of non-binary identities in translations of the Houseki no kuni manga analyzes five translations of the referred manga - two professional translations, one into English and one into French ; and three amateur translations, one into Portuguese, one into Spanish and one into English - and how they dealt with the non-binary gender of the characters. The objective was to examine the ways in which cis-heteronormative ideologies and hegemonic translation ideologies can lead to the erasure of LGBTQAI (plus) identities. The analysis of the data showed that all the translations to Neo-Latin languages, as well as the amateur translation into English designated a gender to the characters. In the case of Neo-Latin languages, the analysis of meta and paratexts suggests that the grammatical gender of these languages played an important role in erasing the non-binary gender of the characters. However, there was also evidence of the influence of cis-heteronormative ideologies in the choice of translation strategies employed. Among the translations analyzed, only the professional translation into English did not designate a gender to the characters. However, the analysis of metatextual sources revealed that translation ideologies related to the idea of fluency were behind the translation strategies used, resulting in a translation that maintains the non-binary gender of the characters, but does not make it visible. By studying the cis-heteronormative and translation ideologies that underlie the translation strategies employed, this research contributes to understand how LGBTQAI (plus) identities can be easily erased in translations and propose ways to make them visible in order to fight cis-heteronormative hegemony.

[en] ANTHOLOGIZING KOREA: AGENTS AND PARATEXTS IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF KOREAN LITERATURE IN BRAZIL (1985-2022) / [pt] ANTOLOGIZANDO A COREIA: AGENTES E PARATEXTOS NA CONSTRUÇÃO DA LITERATURA COREANA NO BRASIL (1985-2022)ALEXSANDRO PIZZIOLO RIBEIRO JUNIOR 08 April 2024 (has links)
antologias dedicadas a diferentes autores e correntes literárias. Da década de 2010
em diante, as antologias alinharam-se às tendências editoriais atuais em diálogo
com a crescente apreciação de produtos culturais coreanos no Brasil. / [en] This Master s thesis proposes the investigation of a corpus of ten anthologies of
translated Korean literature published in Brazil between 1985 and 2022. The
practice of anthologizing Korean literature translated in Brazil was observed in
order to verify the creation of images resulting from the criteria for selecting,
translating and presenting this literature, based on an analysis of its paratexts,
highlighting the actions of the agents of rewriting. The theoretical basis used comes
from Translation Studies, especially the fields of Descriptive Translation Studies
(DTS) and the Sociology of Translation, and from Paratext Theory. Based on the
corpus, it was verified that the act of anthologizing is divided into three attitudes:
(1) constructing, in which the criteria for selecting the texts and the context in which
the works were published are underlined; (2) designing, in which it is verified how
the visual paratext communicates the editorial and translation projects of the
anthologies; and (3) framing, in which, through the prefaces, the strategies for
producing discourses about Korean literature were identified. In examining the
prefaces, the agents highlighted were translators, collaborators and authorities from
the target culture, who assume, from their place of discourse production, a
fundamental role in the insertion of Korean literature in Brazil. From the 1980s to
the 2000s, agents made a central contribution to the publication of this literature
through anthologies dedicated to different authors and literary currents. From the
2010s onwards, the anthologies have aligned with current publishing trends in
parallel with the growing appreciation of Korean cultural products in Brazil.

[en] TRANSLATION AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF CULTURAL IMAGES: CONCEIÇÃO EVARISTO’S PONCIÁ VICÊNCIO, AND ITS TRANSLATION INTO ENGLISH / [pt] A TRADUÇÃO E A CONSTRUÇÃO DE IMAGENS CULTURAIS: PONCIÁ VICÊNCIO, DE CONCEIÇÃO EVARISTO, E SUA TRADUÇÃO PARA O INGLÊSMARCELA IOCHEM VALENTE 18 July 2014 (has links)
[en] This doctoral dissertation analyzes the translation process of Conceição Evaristo’s Ponciá Vicêncio (2003) into English. This novel, written by an Afro-Brazilian writer, was translated by Paloma Martinez-Cruz and published in the United States in 2007, by Host Publications. Considering that translation is not merely an interlingual process, but it also involves many cultural issues, in addition to the fact that the systemic place occupied by a certain work in its source culture is not necessarily repeated in the target culture due to political, social and cultural differences, this research seeks to understand the systemic places occupied by Evaristo and her work both in the Brazilian and American cultural polysystems. This study takes into account aspects such as the motivation to perform the translation of this work, the expected audience, some translation strategies, the distribution and the critical reception of Ponciá Vicêncio in the source and target cultures, as well as the systemic places occupied by the writer and her work in the cultural polysystems of origin and reception. This analysis clarifies some questions such as to what extent this insertion can change the image of Brazilian literature/culture in the North-American polysystem, and the possible impact that Evaristo’s image in the US may have on the position she occupies in the Brazilian literary polysystem – or even in the recent establishment of an Afro-Brazilian literary system. The study of the process of insertion of Conceição Evaristo in the American literary polysystem via translation was informed by the polysystem theory, as proposed by Itamar Even-Zohar, the Descriptive Translation Studies – DTS, especially the ideas of Gideon Toury and André Lefevere, the Cultural Studies, which have led to the articulation of translation studies, gender studies and post-colonial studies, and some ideas by Lawrence Venuti on the generation and manipulation of cultural images. The methodological model proposed by Lambert and Van Gorp also served as an instrument to this research, considering that we analyze aspects such as language, the two systemic contexts involved, some critical texts and the actions of patronage .

[en] FERNANDO PESSOA AS A TRANSLATOR / [pt] FERNANDO PESSOA COMO TRADUTORJULIANA CUNHA MENEZES 04 February 2014 (has links)
[pt] A presente dissertação tem como objetivo verificar que tipo de tradutor, do
inglês para o português, foi Fernando Pessoa. A fim de atingir essa meta, li o livro
Fernando Pessoa: poeta-tradutor de poetas (1999), de Arnaldo Saraiva, e analisei os
níveis métrico, rimático, rítmico, semântico e os diversos recursos estilísticos dos
poemas To a skylark de Percy Bysshe Shelley, Catarina to Camoens de Elizabeth
Barrett Browning, The last metamorphosis of Mephistopheles de Frank Marzials, e de
suas traduções feitas por Fernando Pessoa. A metodologia adotada encontra-se em
Britto (2002, 2004, 2006a, 2006b, 2006c, 2008a, 2008b), e ela visa identificar as
[en] The present thesis aims to verify what kind of translator, from English into
Portuguese, Fernando Pessoa was. In order to achieve this goal, I read Arnaldo
Saraiva’s book Fernando Pessoa: poeta-tradutor de poetas (1999), and analyzed the
meter, rhyme scheme, rhythm and meaning, as well as the diverse stylistic devices in
Percy Bysshe Shelley’s To a skylark, Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s Catarina to
Camoens, Frank Marzials’s The last metamorphosis of Mephistopheles, and in
Fernando Pessoa’s translations of these poems. The methodology adopted can be found
in Britto (2002, 2004, 2006a, 2006b, 2006c, 2008a, 2008b), and its goal is to identify
the characteristics of the original poem which are poetically significant; to assign a
priority to each characteristic, depending on its higher or lower contribution to the total
aesthetic effect of the poem; and to verify whether the translator was able to re-create
the characteristics considered the most significant among the ones which can effectively
be re-created – in other words, to verify whether the translator was able to find
correspondences for them. For these analyses, I used the terminologies in Abrams et al.
(1974), Fraser (1977), Hollander (1989) and Fussell (1979) for the originals; and in
Chociay (1974), Mattoso (2010) and Proença (1955) for the translations. Issues that
pervade the discussions of poetic translation, such as fidelity, were also taken into
account.

[en] BELIEFS ABOUT TRANSLATION TEACHING AND LEARNING: A REFLECTION BASED UPON TRANSLATION STUDIES AND APPLIED LINGUISTICS / [pt] CRENÇAS SOBRE ENSINO E APRENDIZAGEM DE TRADUÇÃO: UMA REFLEXÃO BASEADA NOS ESTUDOS DA TRADUÇÃO E NA LINGUÍSTICA APLICADAFABIOLA ALICE ALVES ROCHA DOS REIS 31 October 2012 (has links)
[en] The amount of existing translator-training courses has increased dramatically over the years due to the rising number of translation commissions and new translation modalities. However, not until the last few years have the number of studies specifically dedicated to Translation pedagogy risen as well. This qualitative research investigates the beliefs about translation teaching and learning from two small groups of interviewees: beginner students of Translation, with no professional experience in the area, and recently graduated students, who have already started translating professionally. All of them have taken the Translation graduation programme at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica (PUC-Rio). The analysis is based on the academic literature from the Translation Studies field, in addition to the research about the foreign language classroom coming from the Applied Linguistics field. Conclusions highlight beliefs that show how important translation theory apllied to practice is, how important the professor is and how important it is to have a pedagogical practice that reflects the job market.

[en] RESPECT FOR THE ORIGINAL TEXT: AN ANALYSIS OF SELF-TRANSLATION BASED ON THE CASE OF THE BRAZILIAN WRITER JOÃO UBALDO RIBEIRO / [pt] O RESPEITO PELO ORIGINAL: UMA ANÁLISE DA AUTOTRADUÇÃO A PARTIR DO CASO DE JOÃO UBALDO RIBEIROMARIA ALICE ANTUNES 25 April 2007 (has links)
[pt] Esta tese se insere no âmbito dos estudos descritivos da
tradução e investiga
a autotradução a partir do caso do escritor brasileiro
João Ubaldo Ribeiro. Com
base em uma nova concepção do autor-modelo (Eco, 1979a;
1979b; 1994), este
estudo investiga se o exercício da autotradução pode ser
visto, no caso do escritor
brasileiro, como uma possibilidade de continuação, por
assim dizer, do processo
de escrita original. Para tal investigação, utiliza-se um
corpus constituído por: (i)
o artigo Suffering in translation, de autoria de João
Ubaldo; (ii) entrevistas
(publicadas ou não) e declarações diversas concedidas pelo
escritor; (iii) os textos
- original e tradução - produzidos por ele; (iv) resenhas
escritas por críticos norteamericanos
e publicadas nos Estados Unidos; e (v) livros escritos por
críticos
brasileiros sobre a obra do autor. Utiliza-se ainda
instrumentos de pesquisa
distintos: (i) a comparação entre original e tradução,
freqüentemente feita por
estudiosos da tradução; (ii) o modelo para análise de
traduções de Lambert e van
Gorp (1985); e (iii) a entrevista por e-mail (Mann &
Stewart, 2000). Além da
análise do corpus em si, este estudo apresenta um
histórico da autotradução e
relatos dos casos dos autotradutores Vladimir Nabokov,
Samuel Beckett, Milan
Kundera, escritores catalães e poetas escoceses. Esta
apresentação tem por
objetivo proporcionar o diálogo entre as diversas práticas
autotradutórias. / [en] The present work presents a study of self-translation
based on the case of the
Brazilian writer João Ubaldo Ribeiro. Using in the
revisited concept of model
author, this thesis seeks to analyse whether the practice
of self-translation can be
seen, in the case of the Brazilian writer, as the
continuation of the process of
original writing. The elaboration of the answer to this
question is based on the
analysis of the corpus, which consists of: (i) the article
Suffering in translation,
by João Ubaldo Ribeiro; (ii) published and unpublished
interviews given by the
author; (iii) original and self-translated texts produced
by João Ubaldo; (iv)
reviews written by North American critics and published in
the USA; and (v)
books written by professional readers about João Ubaldo´s
works. Also, the
investigation uses different research instruments: (i) the
comparative analysis
between original and self-translated texts; (ii) Lambert
and van Gorp´s model for
the analysis of translated literature; and (iii) e-mail
interview. Besides the analysis
of the corpus, this study presents a brief historical
account of self-translation and
general critical reports of self-translators´ - Vladimir
Nabokov, Samuel Beckett,
Milan Kundera, Catalan writers and Scottish poets - works.
Rather than provide
readers with a detailed critical analysis of these
writers´ texts, these reports seek to
make the dialogue between distinct self-translation
practices possible.

[en] REVISION AS AN INTERVENTIONAL ACTIVITY IN TRANSLATION / [pt] A REVISÃO COMO ATIVIDADE INTERVENTORA NO PROCESSO TRADUTÓRIOCLARISSA SOARES DOS SANTOS 23 October 2007 (has links)
imanentistas do significado,
exerce no processo. / [en] Despite its image as a secondary and innocuous activity
and the demand
for its invisibility, translation revision is an important
interventional step of the
translation process that deserves serious study. The
present work has as its
objective the discussion of translation evaluation on the
basis of the study of the
interventions made by translation revisers. To do this, we
comparatively analyze
revisions of translations of subtitles for cable TV,
literary texts, and technical
texts, before and after they have undergone the revision
process. Our intention is
to identify the different interventions made by revisers
in the translated texts. We
analyze translation revision in the light of non-
immanentist theories of meaning,
rethinking the definitions of translation, adaptation,
error and evaluation, as well
as the implications of the questioning of these concepts
for the practical work of
revision. In particular, we rely on Wittgensteinian
notions of language in our
discussion of the process of translation evaluation, some
of its main elements,
roles and forces, and the relation between them. Thus, we
analyze the role of
revisers in translation evaluation: the strategies they
use, the intervention they
make and their authority in this process.

[pt] DESCREVER AS VEREDAS OU NARRAR O GRANDE SERTÃO?: A TAREFA DE ARLINDO DAIBERT AO TRADUZIR O ROMANCE EM IMAGENSELZA DE SA NOGUEIRA 02 August 2004 (has links)
[pt] O trabalho toma a série de setenta e um desenhos, colagens,
aquarelas e xilogravuras G.S.:V. - uma tradução em imagens
do romance Grande sertão: veredas, de João Guimarães Rosa,
feita pelo artista plástico mineiro Arlindo Daibert - como
recriação de processos descritivos e descrição de processos
criativos do romance.

Previous issue date: 2008-04-16 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This thesis intends to outline a problem of translatability as an
exercise of individuation based on the concept found in the works by
Deleuze & Guattari, particularly, the book Mille Plateaux.
This translatability is pragmatically located in the in-between of the
Spanish and Portuguese languages a tension of siamese tongues.
This work is composed, first of all, of a thematic Introduction, with the
addition of a preliminary approach in the manner of short Essays.
Subsequently, it unfolds through three blocks: the first block highlights the
intensification of this convergence of sister languages, from where the
denominated pure language emerges.
The second block is an exercise of investigative intervention in this
convergence, which is proposed as exercise of individuation.
The third block is geared to the intensity that comes from such
exercise, as a procedure of nomadic thought.
It is important to mention that this thesis will be linked to the notion of
state of translation, elaborated by the author in his master s thesis, which
has provided theoretical and methodological elements for the development
of this work / Esta tese visa delimitar um problema da traduzibilidade, como
trabalho
