Previous issue date: 2008-09-23 / Based on the literary project of Alice s Adventures in Wonderland, written by
Lewis Carroll (1865), this dissertation discusses the specific literary quality of that
work, in its originality, logic and esthetic, recreated in Portuguese through the act of
translation. The discussion embraces the confront translation versus adaptation of
the original text, revisiting these two concepts in the light of works written by four
Brazilian authors and translators Monteiro Lobato, Sebastião Uchoa Leite, Ana
Maria Machado and Ruy Castro and their distinguished writings. Some theoristis
and their particular points of view about the translation subject, such as Walter
Benjamin, Haroldo de Campos, Roman Jakobson, Octavio Paz and Roland Barthes,
among others, are applied to the sounding of the translated and adapted versions in
Brazil of Carroll s innovative work, which take as a challenge to preserve the English
author s language with its puns, nonsense and ludic propositions.
Chapter I, entitled The translation and the adaptation, emphasizes the identity
of these two concepts, apprehended in the literary frontier. It discusses, at the same
time, the role of the translator and of the reader and the concept of poetic writing, in
the crossing of a writing that reads other writing. The study intends to investigate the
artistic nature of translation and adaptation, and how these two modes of creation of
a new text can or not recue the literary quality of the original text.
Chapter II focuses in the different transformations promoted in Alice s
Adventures in Wonderland by two national authors, Monteiro Lobato e Sebastião
Uchoa Leite. Basing on modernist theories about translation, the works of those two
translators are approached as models in the history of translation of writings
orientated to children in Brazil.
Chapter III analyses the translations/adaptations of Ana Maria Machado and
Ruy Castro, still in view of the same theories, conducting to the revision of the
editorial market concept and, over all, of the addressing to the child reader.
The three chapters make use of a methodology based in the proceedings of
comparison, deductive counter-arguing and by the critical metalanguage proposed by
the authors, translators and adaptators of their Alices, in the 20th century / A partir do projeto literário de Alice no País das Maravilhas, de Lewis Carroll
(Alice´s Adventures in Wonderland, 1865), discute-se, nesta pesquisa, a qualidade
A discussão abarca o confronto
O Capítulo I, intitulado A tradução e a adaptação, enfatiza esses dois
resgatar a literariedade do texto original.

[en] SOUND SYMBOLISM IN THE LETTERS EXCHANGED BETWEEN GUIMARÃES ROSA AND HIS TRANSLATORS / [pt] SIMBOLISMO SONORO NA CORRESPONDÊNCIA DE GUIMARÃES ROSA COM SEUS TRADUTORESLYSIANE WILLEMANN OLIVEIRA 13 November 2012 (has links)
[en] This work examines the letters exchanged between Guimarães Rosa and his German, Italian and American translators, aiming to apprehend and analyse Rosa s perspectives on sound symbolism. It examines the reflections on the theme that can be inferred from (a) the general considerations that Rosa elaborates in the body of the letters sent to his translators, and (b) the detailed instructions he adds in attachments to resolve specific questions posed by them. It is shown, by analysis of the epistles, that Rosa’s linguistic creation tends to encompass suggestive sonority in a deliberate and somewhat calculated manner, by means of singular onomatopoeias, alliterations, assonances and rhythmic patterns, resulting in a sound symbolism. Charging the texts with expressiveness, strength and plasticity, sound symbolism is an important ingredient in Rosa s strategy to deprive the reader of the walking stick of common place (letter to Harriet de Onis) and to invite him to engage in a relationship with language that might go over the strictly logical-reflexive plane (letter to Edoardo Bizzarri). The study shows, moreover, that Rosa’s reflections and attitudes as a translator can be related to linguistic theories that tend to refuse the principle of the arbitrariness of the sign, also showing partial convergences with theoretical discourses that defend sound symbolism, especially those of Jespersen and Jakobson.

[en] BETRAYAL IN DECONSTRUCTION: ON TRANSLATION, SUBJECTILE, DANCE AND BEYOND / [pt] TRAIÇÃO EM DESCONSTRUÇÃO: SOBRA A TRADUÇÃO, O SUBJÉTIL, A DANÇA E ALÉMSÉRGIO PEREIRA ANDRADE 05 December 2016 (has links)
[en] What I propose is a crossing between traces of thought expressed by Jacques Derrida, with particular emphasis on translation, subjectile and otherness in order to create potential tensions between Philosophy and Dance, whilst at the same time reaffirming the gesture of unconditional betrayal of deconstruction. The notion of betrayal in Derridian thought appears as a no-ownership of all text in their irreducible process of a forcing of the sense in otherness. Such a conception opens up some incongruity for considering the scene from the writing as a mischievous crossing between the texts, an unconditional passivity within passage to the Other - which, for Derrida, is the radical sense of translation. From this perspective, it is interesting to discuss how the deconstruction movement in its upkeep of tension of difference can force a dissemination of thought that cannot be reduced to one, the identity of a unity, and its mechanisms of exclusion and denial of the Other. For that purpose, I assume an erring tessitura, and unconditionally, incomplete inter-texts of Jacques Derrida, Walter Benjamin, Antonin Artaud, Homi Bhabha, Freud among other authors that contribute to the inscription process of thought on the drive towards beyond. This idea does not look to reaffirm what they said or reported, or even have respect for them or desire to write like them, instead, inscribe them directly, in what is called they, subject, it, il. The proposal is a process overlap, altercation, impregnation and surgical operation on the skin that crosses authors-texts, throwing them on the deconstruction borders. On the borders, Philosophy and its men can also dance inside out, into double and non-dialectical gesture of contamination and disturbance between Dance and Philosophy, affirming the difference as a power of tension and crisis.

[en] THE SEMANTIC CLASSIFICATION OF TECHNICAL COMPOUND NOUNS AND THEIR TRANSLATION TO PORTUGUESE / [pt] A CATEGORIZAÇÃO SEMÂNTICA DOS COMPOSTOS NOMINAIS TÉCNICOS EM LÍNGUA INGLESA E OS RESULTADOS TRADUTÓRIOS EM PORTUGUÊSPAULA SANTOS DINIZ 23 May 2017 (has links)
[en] The major purpose of this thesis is to suggest a semantic categorization of English technical noun compounds, as well as to analyze the semantics and syntax of the Portuguese renderings. First, the literature on semantic relations in English compound nouns is reviewed. The classification here suggested is therefore based on classic studies on the semantics of compound nouns (Levi, 1978; Warren, 1978) and on more recent research within the scope of Computational Linguistics, which are influenced by the Generative Lexicon Theory (Pustejovsky, 1995). The semantic categorization is also adapted to the data collected in this work. This thesis also analyzes the Portuguese translation of the English compound nouns, as well as the role of the prepositions in prepositional phrases. The data was taken from an electrical/electronics engineering book which was translated by the author. In addition to the semantic classification, the technical compound nouns are grouped together according to the head or modifiers of the structure, and assembled into ontologies. Compound nouns sharing a common head or modifier are grouped together, so as to investigate if there is a hypernym-hyponym relation among the compounds assembled in the same ontology.

[en] EXPERTISE IN SUBTITLING: LANGUAGE PROCESSING AND TEXT SEGMENTATION / [pt] EXPERTISE EM TRADUÇÃO PARA LEGENDAGEM: PROCESSAMENTO LINGUÍSTICO E SEGMENTAÇÃO TEXTUALJOAO ARTUR DA SILVA SOUZA 30 November 2016 (has links)
[en] This work is an effort in the Psycholinguistics area and it is interfaced with that of Cognitive Translation Studies. It examines the process of textual segmentation of subtitles in the research on translation expertise in subtitling, an under investigated Audiovisual Translation mode in this regard. We consider, especially, the textual segmentation between lines of the same subtitle, a highly specific and indispensable skill that allow subtitlers to render their work in a way that optimizes the processing under these conditions. Based on studies of Expertise in Translation (Shreve, 2006) and language processing with focus on the Garden-Path Theory (Frazier e Fodor, 1978), we designed two experiments involving novice and experienced translators to evaluate the performance of both groups on the textual segmentation process (experiment 1) and segmentations revision (experiment 2); in both cases subtitles were in Portuguese. Experimental paradigms with high ecological validity, where the tasks were comprised of actual phases of professional work, were performed in a specific subtitling software. The results of experiment 1 showed superior performance of the professional group, which was confirmed in experiment 2, favoring the hypothesis of the authors that i) the experience is a relevant factor in the subtitle segmentation process; ii) experienced translators are sensitive to segmentations that can compromise reading (like garden path sentences). The preliminary characterization of expertise in subtitling and the new data added to the discussion on TGP are the main contributions this work achieves.

[en] EVALUATION OF POETRY TRANSLATION: ANNOTATION IN THE SEARCH FOR CONSENSUS / [pt] AVALIAÇÃO DE TRADUÇÃO DE POESIA: A ANOTAÇÃO NA BUSCA PELO CONSENSOJULIANA CUNHA MENEZES 01 June 2017 (has links)
A pesquisa apresenta três etapas. / [en] This study, which can be included in the post-structuralist field, has as its hypothesis the possibility of establishing categories capable of making the following kind of evaluation possible: minimally consensual evaluations of poetry translations. Therefore, when taking into account two or more translations of a poem, submitted to two or more evaluators who adopt uniform categories of analysis, their evaluations, though not identical, will have some relevant aspects in common. The search for consensus is carried out through annotation, one of the activities of Computational Linguistics, which identify and classify a certain linguistic phenomenon, using labels, tags, categories, in a given corpus, so as to achieve a certain goal. The aims of this dissertation are (a) to provide tools for evaluating translations of poems in a minimally consensual way;and (b) to define, systematize and validate the categories of the semantic-lexical level, and to describe and confirm the categories of the formal level (metric and rhymic levels) and of the poetic field of sound resources, so that they all can be used to support minimally consensual evaluations of poetry translation. The research consists of three steps. In the first, annotation is used as a methodology in the search of consensus. In this step, annotations of poems and their translations were made by different annotators. By comparing these annotations searching for consensus, categories were confirmed/validated or reformulated. The consensus allows confirmation and validation, but absence of consensus suggests reformulations and refinements. In the second step, Britto s methodology, with some additional observations, was used to analyse the results from the first step. This methodology aims at verifying whether the most relevant aspects of the formal and semantic-lexical levels and of the poetic field of sound resources (alliterations, assonances, and the like) of the poems have been re-created in the translations. And in the third step, the results of the second one are used in order to produce resources for a possible evaluation of poetry translations: among two translations of the sonnet 130 by Shakespeare, which one would be the most faithful. The hypothesis was proved concerning the formal level and the poetic field of sound resources, but wasn t proved regarding the semantic-lexical level. The validation of categories of the semantic-lexical level can go on in future researches, which may or may not result in the possibility of agreement among evaluations of this level. Aim (a) was achieved. And aim (b) was partially achieved: the definition, systematization and validation of the categories of the semantic-lexical level started in this research, and can go on in future studies. This research can be seen as a contribution not only to the field of poetry translation, but also to Computational Linguistics. Regarding the first, annotation requires interpretations and decision-making processes, thus highlighting the possible interpretations and decision-making processes used during translation. And, concerning the second, the development of a tool for poem annotation, and of a metric for evaluation of poetry translation, using the categories present in this dissertation, may be achieved through a partnership with Computer Engineering.

[en] GLOSSARY OF COMPOUND TERMS IN CARDIOLOGY: A PROPOSAL OF DEVELOPMENT / [pt] GLOSSÁRIO DE TERMOS COMPOSTOS EM CARDIOLOGIA: UMA PROPOSTA DE ELABORAÇÃOSTELA MARIS COSTALONGA E GANDOUR 01 September 2004 (has links)
A pesquisadora tece considerações
[en] This research aimed at developing a Portuguese-English
glossary of compound terms in cardiology with the aid of
electronic tools for corpus processing based on automation
technology. The scarcity of reference material available
for translators and interpreters in the medical area in
Portuguese and the great frequency of occurrence of
compound terms in the medical language motivated this
research. The 21,872-word corpus consisted of several
articles published in a monthly bilingual Brazilian
scientific periodical, which is originally written in
Portuguese by cardiologists and translated into English by
the researcher. Different criteria were used for selecting
the compound terms, yielding a 271-compound list in
alphabetical order. Each term's corresponding English
translation published in the scientific magazine was added
to the list. The result was a Portuguese-English glossary
with 271 compound terms in cardiology. Considerations on
terminology, which served as basis for the research, and
its relation to translation are provided.

[en] THE FIERCE WORD: LANGUAGE AND MEANING IN GUIMARÃES ROSAS LETTERS TO HIS AMERICAN TRANSLATOR / [pt] A PALAVRA BRAVIA: LINGUAGEM E SENTIDO NA CORRESPONDÊNCIA ENTRE GUIMARÃES ROSA E SUA TRADUTORA AMERICANAMIRNA SOARES ANDRADE 26 March 2010 (has links)
ponto particular do corpus roseano.
o estatuto do poético no idioma. / [en] This work analyzes language and meaning perspectives outlined in 59
letters exchanged by Guimarães Rosa and his North-American translator Harriet
de Onís. From a post-structuralist point of view – according to which language is
not an instrument of representation, but rather a multiplicity of volatile and
discontinuous historical practices and, therefore, refractive to general theories
aspiring essence – the fecundity of different ways of looking at language present
in this particular piece of Rosa’s corpus is sought on extra-theoretical grounds.
The irreducibility of these views to any general philosophy and the noticeable
differences of attitude between Guimarães Rosa and Harriet de Onís regarding
language (differences that emphasize by contrast Rosa’s positions) are shown and,
especially, the specific way Rosa promotes performatively the disturbance of
reductionist deep-rooted cultural expectations about language in these letters.
Special thought is given to the way paradox emerges in Rosa as a creative force
and not as an encumbrance, aporia: by the productivity of paradox, fertile angles
open up and through them one may attempt to recognize or, in Rosa’s own words,
think-feel, different aspects of language, notably the common language; the vital
dynamic that binds the text, the author, the translator and the reader; the
irreducible irrationality and mystery; and the poetic statute of language.

[pt] TRADUÇÃO E TRANSCULTURAÇÃO: A AMAZÔNIA DE ELIZABETH BISHOPSILVIA MARIA BAHIA MORAES 02 June 2017 (has links)

[en] THE ETHICS OF THE IDEOLOGICAL INTERVENTION IN TRANSLATIONS / [pt] A ÉTICA DA INTERVENÇÃO IDEOLÓGICA NA TRADUÇÃOJULIA VARELLA NEMIROVSKY 07 December 2017 (has links)
convicções ideológicas do tradutor?
[en] How should one deal with the translation of a text whose content conflicts with their ideological convictions? This dissertation stems from the phenomenon of feminist translation that emerged in Canada in the second half of the last century to discuss the extent to which deliberate ideological intervention in the translated text is ethically acceptable and to what extent this intervention can actually be effective in pursuing the objectives of the translator. For this end, a brief history of the evolution of relativist theories is presented, post-structuralism being one of its most recent manifestations. The research aims at analyzing the context in which the feminist translation movement could thrive, and understanding how it influenced the way translation is theorized and practiced in Canada and in other countries. In the last chapter, the work of some of the leading theoreticians who worked on the topic of ethics in the field of Translation Studies is taken as a basis to discuss the different factors that make deliberate ideological intervention acceptable (and desirable) or not.
