Pratiques langagières et rapports aux identités linguistiques chez les enseignants et les élèves du Haouz : cas des lycées d'Aït Ourir (Maroc) / Language practices and relations with linguistic identities of teachers and students in high schools of Ait Ourir, Haouz, Morocco

Kaddouri, Lahcen 27 October 2017 (has links)
This research aims at studying the different aspects of language use at the levels of linguistic and identity repertoires in a multilingual environment; namely high schools in Aït Ourir, Haouz Province, Morocco. The analysis of conversations in the daily usage of languages revealed that Code Switching is a common practice among teachers as well as pupils; and that the weight of each language used depends more on its usefulness to the purpose of speaking. At the identity level, multilingual identity is dominant and the weight of each language is dependent up on the linguistic biography of the person surveyed. Thus, the relationship between the linguistic and identity repertoires is disproportionate. Indeed, synchronically comparing the languages in study confirmed that they don’t have the same weight at the two levels. The monolingual turn-taking is dominating whereas the monolingual identity is weak. On the other hand, the mixed turn-taking is meaningless whilst multilingual identity is significant. Moreover, the diachronic comparison enabled us to deduce that the change is ongoing in practice while it seems steady from adolescence to adulthood which shows that identifying in a language doesn’t depend on its practice.

Trading Opportunities You Missed on the Swedish Equity Market : An Analysis of the Persistence of Calendar Anomalies

Halldestam, Markus, Karlsson, Katarina January 2018 (has links)
This Study uses a period between 1939-2017 to analyse calendar anomalies on the Swedish equity market. We test whether calendar anomalies’ return deviates from the return of ordinary trading days. Our result shows that the day of the week effect, weekend effect, turn of the year, turn of the month and holiday effect have had an impact on the daily rate of return, both domestic and abroad. Similar to international markets the calendar anomalies in Sweden start to be less prominent during 1980’s. Also, our result displays that, since the 1970’s, UK holidays have had a negative impact on the daily return in Sweden. In contrast, American holidays have since the 2010’s had a positive impact. Turn of the year and turn of the month in Sweden have been more clustered around the first trading day of the year and month, compared to studies on other equity markets. Negative returns on Tuesdays, rather than Mondays, do also distinguish Sweden’s equity market relative to other markets.

A influência japonesa nas artes e na moda europeia da virada do século XX / The Japanese influence on European Arts and Fashion Design at the turn of 20th Century

Luciana Iwamoto 27 June 2016 (has links)
The aim of this research is to study the period between mid-19th century and beginning of 20th century to identify which aesthetic and cultural values aspects and components would eventually have been integrated to European fashion design and art movements. The occidental interest towards the orient have always existed, although, it was intensified after the opening of Japanese ports on 1854, after more than two centuries of seclusion. The encounter of such different cultures triggered enthusiasm in Europe, and several authors suggest that this gathering led the way of art, design and many several fields, resulting in an aesthetic movement called Japonism. Therefore, this qualitative research, on history, generated from bibliographical and field study in museums and exhibits, intends to bring into thought the importance of cultural exchange between Japan and Europe on the end of 19th Century and beginning of 20th century, specifically on art and fashion

New turn-to-turn insulation aging indicator for electrical machines used in aeronautics

Savin, Serghei 25 June 2013 (has links)
For modern aircrafts, the onboard electrical grid becomes the main energy transmission system apart from energy reserved for propulsion. Electrical systems are gradually replacing hydraulic and air systems providing respectively flight controls and cabin comfort in current aircrafts. To transmit higher electrical power without increasing the conductors’ masses, a new standard has been set, the grid of more electrical aircrafts will be 540 VDC. As a result, static converters will systematically be used to drive the electrical actuators. Substantially higher electrical constraints will be applied to electrical machine windings, in addition to those inherent in aeronautics. To obtain the required operational safety, the monitoring of the insulation for onboard electrical embedded machines has become indispensable. This thesis work is focused on the definition of a new aging indicator for the electrical insulation of machine used in aeronautics. The new delta-C indicator is based on the correlation between the increase in the turn-to-turn winding capacitance and reduction of performance mainly characterized by the decrease of Partial Discharge Inception Voltage (PDIV). The experimental part of this work is considerable; the thesis gives the results of accelerated aging tests on a large number of enameled wire standard samples. These results make it possible to define critical threshold for the new delta-C indicator depending on the mission profile of the actuator. The new delta-C indicator is correlated with an easily measurable parameter on an operating electrical machine, i.e. the resonance frequencies of the winding. A numerical tool was developed to determine the resonance frequencies to be monitored according to the geometry and the technology of the winding machine. The prediction frequencies determined by the developed numerical tool have been verified by measurements on artificially aged coils. The study has been extended to the influence of the supply cable of the electrical machine. The operating limits of the proposed monitoring system are defined for various distances between the electrical machine and the connection point of the measurement systems.

Cartografías imposibles. Las ciudades imaginarias de Mario Levrero / Des cartographies impossibles; Les villes imaginaires de Mario Levrero / Impossible cartographies; The imaginary cities of Mario Levrero

Martín Santamaría, Enrique 10 October 2019 (has links)
Projected cities in literature have been proven to be ideal spaces to understand the tensions of our time. By representing the social contradictions produced by the economy, the unequal access to power or the coexistence between different cultural groups, they allow us to reflect on the complex characteristics of a world in permanent transformation. The main objective of this thesis is to analyze the literary cities of Mario Levrero as narrative devices with which to observe the coming to an end of certain political, social and cultural projects of the twentieth century in the face the emergence of a model that tends towards the dissolution of the regional in the global. This work is based on a theoretical assumption that can be summarized as follows: the greater the complexity of our political and economic system, the greater the difficulty in imagining and representing the reality we are a part of. This is particularly clear in the urban representations of Levrero, which symbolize the sense of disorientation that distinguishes the postmodern subject before the failure of every attempt to map any aspect of contemporary reality. This allows us to analyze the political significance of these representations: they entail, on the one hand, a diagnosis of hopelessness for the present and, on the other, an outlook of failure for the future. The cities of Levrero function as backgrounds for the collapse of a known world and the emergence of a brand new one with characters that lack any tools for its interpretation.

Daring to be destructive. Euphrase Kezilahabi’s onto-criticism

Lanfranchi, Benedetta 06 March 2013 (has links)
This paper illustrates the ways in which Kezilahabi’s 1985 dissertation makes its own daring contribution to the field of aesthetic criticism through the proposition of a new critical approach to African literature. Kezilahabi’s starting point for the elaboration this new critical approach is the realization of a prevailing tendency among literary critics to read African literature against formal and aesthetic paradigms deeply rooted in the Western literary and philosophical traditions. Opposed to the adoption of interpretative frames that do not acknowledge the philosophical implications involved in literary analysis, Kezilahabi affirms the importance of approaching literary production from within the artistic and philosophical tradition it stems from. Inspired by hermeneutic philosophy, especially in its “ontological turn” embodied by the philosophy of Martin Heidegger, Kezilahabi’s focus is on literary interpretation as an ontological enterprise aimed at “situating” literature within a horizon of understanding where its proper universe of references can be disclosed.

Data-driven Methods for Spoken Dialogue Systems : Applications in Language Understanding, Turn-taking, Error Detection, and Knowledge Acquisition

Meena, Raveesh January 2016 (has links)
Spoken dialogue systems are application interfaces that enable humans to interact with computers using spoken natural language. A major challenge for these systems is dealing with the ubiquity of variability—in user behavior, in the performance of the various speech and language processing sub-components, and in the dynamics of the task domain. However, as the predominant methodology for dialogue system development is to handcraft the sub-components, these systems typically lack robustness in user interactions. Data-driven methods, on the other hand, have been shown to offer robustness to variability in various domains of computer science and are increasingly being used in dialogue systems research.     This thesis makes four novel contributions to the data-driven methods for spoken dialogue system development. First, a method for interpreting the meaning contained in spoken utterances is presented. Second, an approach for determining when in a user’s speech it is appropriate for the system to give a response is presented. Third, an approach for error detection and analysis in dialogue system interactions is reported. Finally, an implicitly supervised learning approach for knowledge acquisition through the interactive setting of spoken dialogue is presented.      The general approach taken in this thesis is to model dialogue system tasks as a classification problem and investigate features (e.g., lexical, syntactic, semantic, prosodic, and contextual) to train various classifiers on interaction data. The central hypothesis of this thesis is that the models for the aforementioned dialogue system tasks trained using the features proposed here perform better than their corresponding baseline models. The empirical validity of this claim has been assessed through both quantitative and qualitative evaluations, using both objective and subjective measures. / <p>QC 20160225</p>

Updating Rainfall Intensity-Duration-Frequency Curves in Sweden Accounting for the Observed Increase in Rainfall Extremes / Uppdatering av Intensitets-Varaktighetskurvor i Sverige med hänsyn till observera- de ökande trender av extrem nederbörd

Eckersten, Sofia January 2016 (has links)
Increased extreme precipitation has been documented in many regions around the world, in- cluding central and northern Europe. Global warming increases average temperature, which in turn enhances atmospheric water holding capacity. These changes are believed to increase the frequency and/or intensity of extreme precipitation events. In determining the design storm, or a worst probable storm, for infrastructure design and failure risk assessment, experts commonly assume that statistics of extreme precipitation do not change significantly over time. This so- called notion of stationarity assumes that the statistics of future extreme precipitation events will be similar to those of historical observations. This study investigates the consequences of using a stationary assumption as well as the alternative: a non-stationary framework that con- siders temporal changes in statistics of extremes. Here we evaluate stationary and non-stationary return levels for 10-year to 50-year extreme precipitation events for different durations (1-day, 2-day, ..., 7-day precipitation events), based on the observed daily precipitation from Sweden. Non-stationary frequency analysis is only considered for stations with statistically significant trends over the past 50 years at 95% confidence (i.e., 15 to 39 % out of 139 stations, depend- ing on duration, 1-day, 2-day, ..., 7-day). We estimate non-stationary return levels using the General Extreme Value distribution with time-dependent parameters, inferred using a Bayesian approach. The estimated return levels are then compared in terms of duration, recurrence in- terval and location. The results indicate that a stationary assumption might, when a significant trend exists, underestimate extreme precipitation return levels by up to 40 % in Sweden. This report highlights the importance of considering better methods for estimating the recurrence in- terval of extreme events in a changing climate. This is particularly important for infrastructure design and risk reduction.

Living Simultaneity : On religion among semi-secular Swedes

af Burén, Ann January 2015 (has links)
This thesis aims at contributing to a critical discussion on the supposedly far-reaching secularity of Sweden on the one hand, and on the incongruence and inconsistency of lived religion on the other. At the center are people referred to as semi-secular Swedes – a group that is often neglected in the study of religion. These people do not go to church or get involved in any other alternative organized spiritual activities, neither are they actively opposed to religion or entirely indifferent to it. Most of them describe the ways they are – or are not – religious as in line with the majority patterns in Swedish society. The study is qualitative in method and the material has been gathered through interviews and a questionnaire. It offers a close reading of 28 semi-secular Swedes’ ways of talking about and relating to religion, particularly in reference to their everyday lives and their own experiences, and it analyzes the material with a focus on incongruences. By exploring how the term religion is employed vernacularly by the respondents, the study pinpoints one particular feature in the material, namely simultaneity. The concept of simultaneity is descriptive and puts emphasis on a ‘both and’ approach in (1) the way the respondents ascribe meaning to the term religion, (2) how they talk about themselves in relation to different religious designations, and (3) how they interpret experiences that they single out as ‘out-of-the-ordinary’. These simultaneities are explained and theorized through analyses focusing on intersubjective and discursive processes. In relation to theorizing on religion and religious people this study offers empirical material that nuance a dichotomous understanding of ‘the religious’ and ‘the secular’. In relation to methodology it is argued that the salience of simultaneity in the material shows that when patterns of religiosity among semi-secular Swedes are studied there is a need to be attentive to expressions of complexity, contradiction and incongruity. / Religious ambiguities on the urban scene

Filosofická zkoumání Ludwiga Wittgensteina a ontologické a gnoseologické základy pro pragmatický obrat v teoretickém nazírání na mediální komunikaci / Philosophical investigations of Ludwig Wittgetein and ontological and gnoseological foundation for pragmatic change in the theoretical approach to media communication

Fulín, Jakub January 2014 (has links)
In this thesis I aim to apply some late Wittgenstein's thoughts and ideas (mainly those of language-game) to media studies. For argumentation sake, both mediated communication as whole and various parts of mediated communication are perceived as self-aligning language- games. These are forms of communication wielded only by implicit rules which are determinated by usage of relevant signs. The key ideology here is that of pragmatism. Meaning of words and other signs is also determined by their usage in relevant language- game (e. g. article in paper, certain kind of TV show, etc.). This notion of various forms of mediated communication leads to a belief that they posses only a very limited ability to outreach their context (of a genre and to more extent mediated communication as a whole). This theory is compatible with Jean Beaudrillard's concept of simulacra. These are symbols without meaning based in reality. Instead they form a (hyper)reality of their own. What both scholars tech us is that symbols can be properly understood only within their context. Mediated communication according to my application of Wittgenstein has always a single meaning that is determined by "the way the communication go". I also consider few objections to this "totalitarian" conception, most importantly Umberto Eco's...
