Complex network analysis of extreme rainfall in South America

Boers, Niklas 01 June 2015 (has links)
Based on the theory of networks, a general framework is developed to study collective synchronization phenomena of extreme events in complex systems. The method relies on observational time series encoding the variability of the single parts of the system, and is intended to reveal emerging patterns of extreme event synchronization on the macroscopic level. For this purpose, the time series obtained from an interactive system under consideration are identified with network nodes, and the possibly delayed and non-linear interdependence of extreme events in different time series is represented by network links connecting the nodes. In this way, the complex internal synchronization structure of the system becomes accessible in terms of the topology of the network, which can be analyzed by introducing suitable network measures. The methodology is applied to satellite-derived rainfall time series of high spatiotemporal resolution in order to investigate the collective dynamics of extreme rainfall events in South America. The purpose of this application is threefold: First, it is shown how the methodology can be used for climatic analysis by revealing climatological mechanism from the spatial patterns exhibited by different network measures. Second, by introducing the concept of network divergence, sink and source regions of extreme events can be identified, allowing to track their directed synchronization pathways through the network. A simple statistical forecast rule is derived on this basis, predicting substantial fractions of extreme rainfall events in the Central Andes. Third, the methodology and the insights developed in the first two steps are used to evaluate the dynamical representation of extreme events in different datasets, and in particular their dynamical implementation in three state of the art climate models.

Defektparametrar i denna rapport redovisas i bilaga 1. The reason is that different acceptance criteria and assessments must be based on defects that correspond to real defects. In this project different experience has been analyzed to get a better overview between defect parameters and non-destructive testing. This report shows the beginning of the research &amp; development project PLANT 2. There are different flaw parameters that have been mapped and a theoretical assessment has been performed with regard to how the signal response is influenced by the NDT techniques eddy current, ultrasonic pulse echo and ultrasonic time-of-flight-diffraction. The definition of the reported flaw parameters does in general follow the one presented in SKI-report 95:70 [1]. The actual flaw parameters in this report are presented in appendix 1. The following flaw parameters were assessed to affect the signal response considerably: • Macroscopic shape in the surface direction, number of cracks and cobblestone stone pattern distance (for thermal fatigue) • Macroscopic shape in the through thickness direction • Crack width at the crack tip and the crack tip radius For flaws caused by the manufacturing process, type slag and lack of fusion, the flaw parameters “Macroscopic shape in the through thickness direction” and “the geometry” were influenced by the signal response considerably. In the evaluation of signal response with the UT pulse echo and UT TOFD techniques, the result corresponded to the theoretical assessment. For the eddy current technique only one of three flaw parameters corresponded to the theoretical assessment.

The Representation of Landscape in Occidental and Chinese Poetry and Visual Arts

Fan, Jiani 04 November 2016 (has links)
This dissertation focuses on the representation of landscape in poetry and visual arts, with the reciprocal illumination of Western (mainly French and Antiquity) and Chinese culture. This research is inspired by the canonical definition of landscape that the landscape is a portion of space represented or observed horizontally or vertically by an observer. Accordingly, for researchers of modern literature, the emergence of the concept of "subject" generates the notion of landscape in the etymological sense. However, in ancient China, “be” as a predicate is often absent in poetry, especially in the nominal syntax. The Chinese language reflects a non-anthropocentric perspective of landscape, about which Stimmung and Qingjing (the emotion-landscape) deconstruct the notion of landscape structured by the “subject“. The Approach to the revision of the canonical landscape concept is to introduce the ancient visual art and poetry so as to write a prehistory as well as a history of landscape (natural elements) and to propose about the emergence of the landscape in Antiquity, even if I can not find a term corresponding exactly to the modern landscape. This attempt, proposing the birth of the landscape in ancient times, is different from the well-known claim that the landscape was born in the Renaissance. In this research, I try to dodge the "grand narrative" proclaiming a universally valid truth, but to advocate "small stories" that specify "localized representations of the restricted area." Thus, I chose four fundamental themes such as sublime, Stimmung, ruins and vide, so as to discuss the relationship between subject and object, consciousness of history and place of memory, etc.

Vérèmes, Hélène 03 June 2016 (has links)
In a context of climate change, it is important to study distribution processes and the trends of trace atmospheric gases such as ozone and water vapor. The Maïdo atmospheric observatory, located at 2160 m in height, hosts a set of atmospheric in-situ and remote sensing instruments, including the Lidar1200 providing vertical water vapor profiles. This thesis aims to provide a thorough work of validation, evaluation and analysis of the Lidar1200 data. Comparisons with radiosoundings allowed to validate the water vapor profiles of the lidar from the lower troposphere up to an altitude of 22 km if a sufficient number of data is integrated. At a smaller temporal scale, the Lidar1200 is able to follow temporally structures in the range of a hundred of meters thick up to a dozen of kilometers in altitude. The data analysis show the potential of the lidar in monitoring the water vapor in the lower stratosphere on a long term with one to two points of measurements by month. The database 2013-2015 brings information on the seasonal variability of the water vapor over Reunion Island. The water vapor data allow to study various atmospheric processes including stratosphere-troposphere exchanges. Signatures of stratospheric intrusions were observed on quasi-simultaneous and co-localized ozone and water vapor observations realized by two lidars of the Maïdo Observatory during the measurement campaign MALICCA-1 (MAïdo LIdar Calibration CAmpaign, Reunion Island), on April 4, 2013, suggesting stratospheric intrusions with multiple origins.

Gervais de Lafond, Delphine 20 December 2012 (has links)
The name of Shakespeare overhangs the 19th century. The English playwright inspires literature, music and fine arts. He is closely associated with theatre renewal and becomes a model for a generation of artists. What are they looking for in the witches' infamy, the procrastination of a young prince, the distress of an old king, forbidden romances? They dream of other universes crowded with fantastic creatures and passionate human beings. In the beginning of this century, as Stendhal pointed out in a note dedicated to The Bard : “We need to feel rather than to know”. The aim of the research herein is to analyse the Shakespearean inspiration on French painting over the 19th century through a discussion which deals with iconographical and aesthetic concerns as well. To be as relevant as possible, we chose to organize our work in five parts in order to offer a global and complete view of the subject. Thus, the first part of our dissertation tends to initiate the reader to the Shakespearean iconography in general, while the following third parts explore the painter's different sources of inspiration (textual, visual and iconographical). Finally, the fifth part is devoted to the examination of the role played by this literary inspiration on French painting through intellectual, critical and ideological approaches.

Développement d’une méthode de reconstruction ultrasonore pour la localisation et la caractérisation de défauts / Development of ultrasonic reconstruction method for the localization and characterization of defects

Fidahoussen, Alex 21 September 2012 (has links)
Techniques for nondestructive testing based on ultrasonic phased array probe are now increasingly used in industry. These probes offer many advantages, in particular use versatility and adaptability to complex configurations. More advanced acquisition techniques, such as “Full Matrix Capture”, provide access to collection of data richer and more complete than those provided by conventional techniques, offering so new possibilities in terms of localization and characterization of defects. The work of this thesis aims to implement imaging and reconstruction methods for various operating modes of UT array inspection. For this, we propose different methods derived from the so-called synthetic focusing. These methods rely on forward models developed at CEA LIST and implemented in the CIVA software platform. These models can also take into account the complex inspection configurations, especially in regard to the -irregular- surface inspected parts. At first, we were interested in locating point-like scatterer. Under this hypothesis, we evaluated the performance of the proposed methods when they are applied with different types of inspection operating mode. Next work has been refocused on the study of the Full Matrix Capture coupled to the algorithm called Focalisation en Tous Points (FTP), this combination has shown good performance in terms of defect localization. In a second step, we generalized our approach to extended defects and multiple ultrasonic paths. In particular, we applied the latest FTP algorithm to the localization and characterization of notch near the bottom of the part with corner echoes, echoes due to successive ultrasonic wave reflections on the bottom and defect. The different methods considered in this work have been applied with both simulated data and experimental measurements.

Über Erdbeben - Ein Versuch zur Erweiterung seismologischer Darstellungsweisen

Dombois, Florian 14 October 1998 (has links)
The dissertation in hand is engaged in the understanding and cognition of earthquakes. Essentially it is the attempt to draw near the natural phenomenon and to broaden our conception of it: (i) What actually is an earthquake? What makes it up? Why might it be fascinating? (ii) How were and how are earthquakes depicted in the textual and pictoral tradition in Europe? (iii) How is the form of depiction related to the content 'earthquake'? How does the phenomenon change when the form of depiction is altered? (iv) And last not least: which form seems to be most suitable for the depiction of an earthquake? According to the above questions 16 'earthquake-depictions' are sampled to investigate the relation between form and content. The attempt is made to provide a collection of great diversity in form: Today's usual manner of earthquake depiction is represented by the reaction, the earthquake of Kobe has received (§ 13 seismological article, § 14 press releases, § 15 earthquake simulator in the Natural History Museum London); then there are chosen: two samples of the Old Greek tradition (§ 1 myth of Poseidon, § 2 Aristoteles' 'Meteorologica'), further two from the Roman tradition (§ 3 Seneca's 'Naturales Quaestiones', § 4 'Aetna'), and two from the Christian tradition (§ 5 'Bible', § 6 Thomas Aquinas on Aristotle's 'Meteorologica'); furthermore there are some samples looked upon that show reaction on the Lisbon earthquake of 1755 (§ 8 shocking ballads, § 9 Voltaire, § 10 copper engravings of Le Bas, § 11 Immanuel Kant, § 12 John Michell). Last not least the science fiction novel 'Richter 10' by Clarke and McQuay (§ 16) is examined. Finally I complain that the manner of scientific depiction is 'un-sensual' and disposing. Therefore the dissertation is meant to flow into a counter-project. The last chapter scrutinizes the experience of the investigations before under a wider angle. In consequence I suggest to investigate an acoustical transponation of the earth's movements. An example of the new kind of sound that emerges from that is drawn from a 1994 earthquake in Chile. A range of further considerations show that not only the form of the acoustical transformation seems promising but also its content: far from the mainstream of seismological research the new acoustic form renders the question of earthquake prediction in a unusual but new and fairly easy way. All of this results in me hoping that the releasing of this new form of depiction triggers of a new field of scientific research at the same time.

Andic, Berna January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate how four teachers in grade 4, 5 and 6 choose to work with reading comprehension within the Swedish subject. In this study the focus is on the following issues: - How do the teachers work to get the students to understand the texts they are reading? - How do the teachers in the Swedish subject describe reading comprehension? In order to conduct the survey, I have used two methods, these are interviews and observations. After carrying out four observations and four interviews, I have analyzed the empirical material by means of three theories relating to each other. These three theories are the socio-cultural perspective, reciprocal teaching and transactional strategy instruction. The result of this study shows that the four teachers primarily choose to let the students read short texts taken from a textbook, then let them answer questions related to these texts. This was reflected in the observations and interviews. During the interviews, all teachers said reading comprehension is a very comprehensive concept that consists of several different parts, and that these parts together constitute the concept of reading comprehension. These include for instance, understanding the texts we read and being able to use these texts according to the teachers.

Majlöf, Pernilla, Persson, Hanna January 2009 (has links)
<p>This thesis has been written within the research project “Tillfälligt Uppbrott”, which concerns youths who have run away or been thrown out of their homes. The project is based on a na-tional poll among more than 3000 high school students. Our purpose has been to study youths who have left home and their own experiences. We have looked at all the question-naires in which the youths stated they had left home and focused on their answers to five open questions.
