Exploring the use of social capital to support technology adoption and implementation

Hamre, Lynne Janine January 2008 (has links)
Information System (IS) implementations are a risky business with studies showing only a 16%-29% success rate. This research explores the use of social capital to support technology implementations. This research brings together two distinct bodies of knowledge: social network analysis (SNA) and technology acceptance models, in order to better understand the relationship between social capital and technology acceptance. The first aspect of the research looks at social network centrality and influence measures as an alternative means to measure social influence in the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model. The social influence construct has proven to be inconsistent in past research. An individual‟s decision to adopt a new technology is influenced by their social context or the informal social network within which they work. The social capital of others influences their attitudes and decision to adopt a new technology. Social Capital, as measured through social network analysis, could be substituted for the social influence construct of the UTAUT model. Two revised UTAUT models are developed and tested. The second aspect of this research uses social capital to inform membership of a Community of Practice (CoP) to support a Finance Management System implementation in a higher education organization. SNA can be used to gain an understanding of the social network and identify individuals with high social capital. There is growing evidence that CoP support successful organizational change initiatives but it is less clear how CoP membership might be determined. SNA provides an evidence-based approach to CoP formation. The IS implementation cases described in the paper demonstrate an innovative approach to IS implementation grounded in social capital and technology acceptance research that add to the body of knowledge in both theory and practice.

Identification of Factors Influencing the Adoption of Mobile Payments : A qualitative research study on the Swish mPayment App

Ibidunmoye, Wemimo January 2018 (has links)
Information Communication Systems (ICT) has brought about a change in the way people handle transactions. The payment systems have undergone an incredible evolution over the passing years from physical transfer of cash to exchanging money in a digital form. Mobile Payment (mPayment) which is a branch of mobile commerce is one of the areas that is becoming more and more popular these days. In Sweden, there is a growing success of mPayment system such as SEQR, Swish amongst others. However, a huge chunk of the population is yet to adopt the system. Hence, there is a need to identify factors that influence peoples’ decisions to adopt or not to adopt the mPayment system like Swish. This study aimed at identifying the factors that influence the adoption of mPayment system amongst the consumers in Sweden. The research question was: what factors influence the adoption of Swish mobile payment app among the consumers in Sweden? A qualitative research was conducted. A semi structured interview was used as the data collection method. This data collection method was used because this research work seeks to identify the feelings, opinions and experiences of people and this method fits best into the research work. The thematic analysis approach was used for the data analysis. The study showed that impact of the system on day-to-day activities, speculation of risk and trust of the system, integration to lifestyle, speculation of user friendliness and flexibility, age and peer influence are the factors that influence the adoption of swish mobile payment app amongst the consumers in Sweden. Furthermore, the research was viewed through the lens of the UTAUT by comparing the findings of the study and how it relates to the determinants and moderating factors of the model. In conclusion, this study has contributed to the field of ICT specifically the mobile technology field. The conceptual model that was built will be useful for developers and researchers to be able to know the areas to put in more efforts and areas to keep maintaining. Furthermore, this research was conducted within a country that has experience with m-payment apps. Hence, this study can serve as an example for other countries moving towards higher smartphone and application usage.

Aplicação das tecnologias de informação no processo ensino-aprendizagem do curso técnico em enfermagem do Centro Paula Souza/SP

Duarte, Aline Graziele Godoy January 2008 (has links)
This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted to know the acceptance and use of Virtual Learning Environments made to know the acceptance and the use by students and teachers of the nursing technical course of the "Centro Paula Souza". We use as theoretical contribution the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology, which brings together the eight main theories about acceptance and use of technology. Data collection was done through a websurvey with 167 students and 83 teachers from the 58 state technical schools of the "Centro Paula Souza", in the state of São Paulo - Brazil, of the nursing technicians training course. Data analysis was carried out through calculations of measurements, numerical and categorical summaries, due to their descriptive character. The study population believes that the use of the Virtual Learning Environment can help it to improve performance in the work/school (expectation of performance), being more expressive among the teachers in relation to the students; both believe in the infrastructure offered by the “C.P.S.” (facilitating conditions), more significantly among male teachers. Believing and trusting in technology can be a key factor for the acceptance and use of technology, and ensuring adequate infrastructure, which provides support in the performance of activities, is a crucial factor for continued use. Intention d'adoption et utilisation d'une technologie émergente : le cas de la NFC appliquée aux systèmes de paiement électronique de détail (paiement sans contact) / [Adoption and use of an emergent technology : the case of NFC applied to retail electronic payment systems (contactless payment)

Hasnaoui, Amir 27 March 2012 (has links)
With the emergence of near-field technology (NFC), mobile terminal have become a true instrument of contactless payment. This type of system is a new opportunity to boost the electronic payment systems (EPS) for the micropayment. The objective of this research is to develop a model and measurement tools to handle and to identify factors influencing the acceptance of these systems. Based on the paradigms of the acceptance of technology and research around the SPE, we have developed a conceptual model which integrates the UTAUT and TTF. This model allows both to consider the adoption strategies of individuals and their intention to adopt. Indeed, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use and facilitating conditions are no longer sufficient for a technology to be adopted. The capabilities of this technology have to match the tasks that the user will perform. Our result have been measured and validated thanks to structural equations analysis of data collected from a sample of 629 individuals

Alzheimer's disease and related disorders caregiver's acceptance of a web-based structured written emotional expression intervention

Ko, Ji Woon 01 December 2011 (has links)
Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders (ADRD) are a major public health problems. Major sources of care provision are family members in the community and these ADRD caregivers encounter a variety of stressor. Currently there continues to be a need to develop and test Internet based interventions designed to reduce stress for caregivers for persons with ADRD. The web-based Structured Written Emotional Expressions (SWEE) was developed to manage ADRD caregivers stress related to caregiving experiences through writing about their thoughts and feelings. However, differences between provided services by researchers (the web-based SWEE) and the desired services of ADRD caregivers could be a barrier to ADRD caregivers' acceptance and use of the web-based SWEE. The purpose of this study was to assess the acceptability of implementing a web-based nursing intervention for ADRD caregivers and to describe participants' experiences in using the website to understand ADRD caregivers' website usage. An experimental design was used to determine whether the web-based SWEE helped to manage ADRD caregivers' stress through writing interventions. In addition, the UTAUT model was employed for a theoretical framework to explain and predict the web-based SWEE usage behavior by ADRD caregivers. The Finding Meaning Through Caregiving Scale (FMTCS) was used to evaluate finding-meaning related to caregiving experiences as a mediator between performance expectancy and behavioral intention to use in the UTAUT model. Furthermore, the web-based research methods were assessed throughout the web-based SWEE implementing process. Both web-based and paper-based methods were used for recruiting potential participants. Most people who contacted the researcher were recruited by the web-based method. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used for test ADRD caregivers' acceptability of the web-based SWEE and direct content analysis was used for describing participants' experiences in using the web-based SWEE. Fifty people completed the study out of the 90 people who enrolled. Of these 50 participants, 31 completed the study as intended and on schedule. The research showed a good model fit with a Chi-square value (df=43) of 57.191 (p>0.05). The findings showed that performance expectancy had a significant effect on participants' behavioral intention to use (β=0.620, p<0.01) and that effort expectancy also affected the behavioral intention to use the web-based SWEE (β=0.293, p<0.01). Performance expectancy showed stronger effects than effort expectancy. This model explained 52% of variance in behavioral intention to use. However, the effects of facilitating conditions on actual usage and effects of behavioral intention to use on actual usage were not supported by this research. The finding-meaning measure did not show a significant mediating effect on the relationship between performance expectancy and behavioral intention to use. Findings suggested that recruitment methods which use the Internet were an effective way to find potential study participants. Regardless of the topic, the writing intervention helped ADRD caregivers to express stress related to caregiving experiences. In addition, the perceived usefulness of this nursing intervention (performance expectancy) and the perceived ease of use (effort expectancy) were two important constructs which predicted and explained the acceptance of the web-based SWEE by ADRD caregivers. Finally, even though the UATAUT model was only partially supported by a good model fit, this study's findings showed the potential of the UTAUT model for providing health consumer information systems in nursing.

Applying UTAUT to Determine Intent to Use Cloud Computing in K-12 Classrooms

Kropf, Dorothy Cortez 01 January 2018 (has links)
Although school districts provide collaborative cloud computing tools such as OneDrive and Google Drive for students and teachers, the use of these tools for grading and feedback purposes remains largely unexplored. Therefore, it is difficult for school districts to make informed decisions on the use of cloud applications for collaboration. This quantitative, nonexperimental study utilized Venkatesh et al.'s unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) to determine teachers' intent to use collaborative cloud computing tools. Online surveys with questions pertaining to UTAUT's predictor variables of performance expectancy (PE), effort expectancy (EE), social influence (SI), facilitating conditions (FC) and UTAUT's criterion variable of behavioral intent (BI) were administered to a convenience sample of 129 teachers who responded to an email solicitation. Pearson correlation results of r = 0.781, r = 0.646, r = 0.569, and r = 0.570 indicated strong, positive correlations between BI and PE, EE, SI, and FC respectively. Spearman rho correlations results of rs = 0.746, rs = 0.587, rs = 0.569, and rs = 0.613 indicated strong, positive correlations between BI and PE, EE, SI, and FC respectively. Simple linear regression results indicated that PE and EE are strong predictors of BI when moderated by age, gender, experience, and voluntariness of use (VU). SI is a strong predictor of BI when moderated by gender, but not by age, experience, and VU. This study's application of the UTAUT model to determine teachers' BI to use collaborative cloud computing tools could transform how administrators and educational technologists introduce these tools for grading and feedback purposes. This study contributes to the growing body of literature on technology integration among K-12 teachers.

Examination of Adoption Theory on the DevOps Practice of Continuous Delivery

Anderson, Andrew John 01 January 2019 (has links)
Many organizations have difficulty adopting advanced software development practices. Some software development project managers in large organizations are not aligned with the relationship between performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions, as moderated by experience, with intent to adopt the DevOps practice of continuous delivery. The purpose of this study was to examine the statistical relationships between the independent variables—performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions, as moderated by experience—and the dependent variable of behavioral intent to adopt a continuous delivery system. Venkatesh, Morris, Davis, and Davis's unified theory of acceptance and use of technology provided the theoretical framework. A stepwise multiple linear regression analysis was performed on survey data from 85 technical project managers affiliated with LinkedIn project management groups. The analysis reflected that only performance expectancy was significant in predicting intent to adopt continuous delivery. The findings may contribute to social change by providing project managers with the information they need to support organizational change, collaboration, and facilitation. The knowledge gained may additionally help organizations develop operational efficiency, competitive advantage, and generate higher value to their clients and society.

A study on Consumer¡¦s adoption of Mobile TV

Cheng, Huei-ying 30 August 2010 (has links)
Because of the popularity of the 3G mobile technology and the development of digital broadcasting technologies, the mobile television (TV) has become a potential killer application within the telecom industry. This research examines mobile user¡¦s intention to use and the use behavior of mobile TV. The theory underlying the study is the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) that takes performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating condition as independent factors and the intention and behavior of usage as dependent variables. Two online surveys were conducted to evaluate the theory. The result from the first survey shows that the performance expectancy, the effort expectancy and the social influence factors have significant influences on the mobile TV user¡¦s intention toward using mobile TV services. The facilitating condition has a positive significant relationship with the usage behavior. The result different from the previous studies is no significant relationship between the intention and use behavior. However, the follow-up survey conducted a year later shows that the facilitating condition and intension to use have positive significant impacts on the use behavior. This study can help firms to better understand the factors that affect the intention and behavior of using mobile TV.

Analyses Of Factors Affecting Acceptance Of Homecare Technologies By Patients With Chronic Diseases

Kutlay, Aysegul 01 February 2012 (has links) (PDF)
In this study, the factors affecting the acceptance of mobile homecare system were examined. These factors were assessed by taking Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) as a theoretical model. The main feature of this thesis (differing from the other studies in the literature) is that the user acceptance study model is analyzed on a system that is not realized yet. So, this study has two dfferent perspectives. The first one is the examination the results of UTAUT for a system in the design phase. The other one is the investigation of the relations of factors that affect the acceptance of mobile homecare by patients with chronic diseases. For these purposes, a homecare system model was formulated based on similar studies in the literature. A quantitative research was conducted on this formulated system. The results were evaluated by Structural Equation Model. According to the results of structural model, all hypotheses were supported and consistent with the earlier study results, which were based on completed and in-use systems. Therefore, this study shows that, for systems in the design level, the acceptance models can also be applicable and may give similar results. The results also show that performance expectance was the most significant predictor for patients
