The eight monophonic political planctus of the Florence manuscript

Taylor, Leslie Anne 05 1900 (has links)
The medieval planctus is a Latin lament, composed in great numbers on Biblical themes as well as for the death of political figures or the destruction of cities. It appeared in both monophonic and polyphonic form, and had counterparts in a number of vernacular languages. The manuscript Biblioteca Mediceo-Laurenziana Pluteo 29.1, known as the Florence manuscript, contains eight monophonic planctus in the memory of well-known public figures of the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. This thesis will examine these compositions as a collection. The monophonic repertoire of the middle ages has been examined in a relatively limited fashion; the florid Latin repertoire, which includes these planctus, has been studied hardly at all. This thesis will provide a musical analysis based upon the text, to prove that the underlying compositional basis for these widely disparate pieces was the same. The planctus span a period of seventy years, and differ greatly in length, textual structure, and musical form. However, as this work will demonstrate, despite their differences, they follow essentially the same inner logic. The analyses contained in the thesis are based upon study of both the syntax and poetry of the text, and seek to discover the relationship of the music to these textual aspects. Various facets of the music (cadence structure, melodic outline, ambitus, and mode) are included in the study. In the process of this study, other facts about the planctus also come to light: the importance of pitches grouped into melodic phrases; mode as an expressive tool rather than a restrictive set of parameters; and the presence of various forms of descriptive composition, or word-painting, often considered not to exist in medieval music. The thesis draws conclusions regarding these aspects of the music, and how they are all used to the greater expression of the texts. The results of this analysis conclude that the eight planctus, while differing in surface characteristics, are the outcome of a single compositional approach, that of the text as a departure point for the music.

Experiences, challenges and coping strategies of unaccompanied migrant children in South Africa : guidelines for Social Work

Mathe, Memory 05 1900 (has links)
The aim of this study was to investigate unaccompanied migrant children (UMC )experiences, challenges and coping strategies in South Africa as they navigate their lives with no parental care and protection in a foreign country. The continuous inflow of UMC remains a major challenge globally and more so in South Africa. The inflow resulted in unaccompanied migrant children facing adverse challenges such as exploitation, marginalisation, discrimination and violation of human rights. In response to this influx, the South African Government embarked on several commendable initiatives, notwithstanding the national guidelines by the Department of Social Development, which unfortunately could not provide adequate guidance for social workers, on how to respond effectively to challenges facing UMC. The study was qualitative guided by exploratory, descriptive, and contextual designs. A sample was drawn using purposive sampling. Participants sampled for data collection were UMC and social workers tending them, from two shelters; one in the Limpopo and one in the Gauteng provinces, respectively. Data was collected using semi-structured interviews and analysed using Tesch’s eight steps of data analysis in Creswell (2013). The findings confirmed that unaccompanied migrant children do not receive satisfactory services from social workers who are mandated by the Department of Social Development to look after all the vulnerable children in South Africa. In addition, the findings further confirmed the contradictions and misalignment of legal frameworks that make it difficult for social workers to provide effective services to the UMC, thus exposing the latter to a continued plethora of daily challenges. Despite the magnitude of challenges presented by the host country, it emerged that unaccompanied migrant children demonstrate a range of coping mechanisms to survive the challenges experienced within the borders of South Africa. Prominent in the findings was the dissatisfaction of social workers regarding lack of clarity and inconsistencies in the current Social Development Guidelines on; Separated and Unaccompanied Children Outside their Country of Origin in South Africa. Based on these findings, recommendations are made for practice and additional guidelines were developed to enhance service delivery to the UMC. / Social Work / D. Litt. et Phil. (Social Work)

Gymnasielagen - en möjlighet kantad av hinder : En kritisk diskursanalys av propositionen till den nya Gymnasielagen

Söderin, Ida January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to perform a critical discourse analysis on the upper secondary school act aiming to map which discourses that are being reproduced concerning unaccompanied youths, as well as the motivation behind the creation of the law. Furthermore, the purpose is to investigate the consequences of the discourses produced for unaccompanied youths’ rights claims. Faircloughs discursive model of three levels was used to review the proposition. This was complemented by an analysis of the result in relation to the Copenhagen school of securitization as well as Elena Namlis perspective on human rights. The review revealed that the dominating discourse in the upper secondary school act depicts the unaccompanied youths as foreign and potential threats. The law is motivated by the need to compensate for the Migration boards’ long processing time for their application of asylum upon arrival. It is said that this specific group ended up in an misfortuned situation. It is also explained that the law will trigger the youths to integrate through the demand of them needing to finish high school and find a job within 6 months in order to get asylum. However, this thesis also shows that the government is not fully ready to compensate for this misfortune as the demands, qualification to be available for this law, and security control of youths are implemented. Those obsticles are motivated by the view of the youths as existential threats and could be viewed as a sign of securitization of unaccompanied youths. What follows is them having a more difficult path of reaching their rights of asylum.

"Tror ni att jag fick allt gratis? Jag fick jobba arslet av mig!" : En studie om vilken betydelse relationer, nätverk och strategier har för ensamkommande flickors inträde och etablering på den svenska arbetsmarknaden / “Do you think I got everything for free? I had to work my ass off!” : A study of the significance of relationships, networks and strategies for the entry and establishment of unaccompanied girls in the Swedish labor market

Brydolf, Zenzi, Casserblad, Rebecka January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this study is to investigate how women who came to Sweden as unaccompanied children experienced their entry into the Swedish labor market based on six qualitative interviews with woman in the age range of 24-32. The interviews were analyzed and interpreted using social capital as a theory. The results show that the informants turned to their friends consisting of other unaccompanied children, and that this network provided security and answers especially in the beginning of their stay in Sweden. Furthermore, our results show that bonding social capital played an important part as an enabler to search for contacts outside the network. All respondents report that it is difficult to get to know Swedes. The respondents did not attribute any significant importance to their social worker but they all emphasized that a significant key to enter the labour market is to learn the Swedish language.

Komparace sociálně-právní situace nezletilých bez doprovodu v České republice a Rakousku / Comparison of social and legal situation of unaccompanied minors in the Czech Republic and Austria

Roguľová, Julie January 2014 (has links)
The theme of the work is to compare social and legal situation of unaccompanied minors (UAMs) from third countries, who find themselves in the territory of the Czech Republic and Austria, and these countries have subsequently provided them care and protection. Work aims to describe the history of the system of care, possible types of residence of these children, conditions of their security and identifying of their age in the two above-mentioned countries. Emphasis is also on the system of care, involving social and legal protection, housing, custody area, education, health care, as well as the search for durable solutions in the area of residence, the family reunification and reintegration. Then, I will try by using analysis to compare what these various aspects of their social and legal situation differ in, what they are identical in or which country better respects the so-called "appropriate procedures of Separated Children in Europe Programme ". I would also like to point out some deficiencies in the system or vice versa examples of good practice in both countries.

Ensamkommande barn-från ankomst till inkomst : En kvalitativ studie om upplevelser av socialtjänstpersonal om ensamkommande barn som har anlänt i Sverige år 2015 och senare / Unaccompanied children - from landing till earning

Al-Bayati, Zinah, Navin, Laila January 2021 (has links)
Background: Statistics shows that 35 369 unaccompanied children applied for asylum in Sweden in 2015. It was a dramatic increase in number of asylum seekers as compared to the previous years and the following years. There were insufficiencies in performance of Social Services regarding unaccompanied children in previous years under normal circumstances. We wanted to study if the Social services were able to meet the basic needs and rights of the unaccompanied children in accordance with the Social Services Act and the UN’s Children’s Convention after the huge influx of asylum seekers in Sweden in a short span of time in 2015. Objective: The purpose of our research was to study the experiences of personnel of The Social Services about their performance of their duty regarding integration and empowerment of unaccompanied children who have come to Sweden in 2015 and onwards. Our question formulation was: How have the personnel of the social services performed their duties regarding integration of unaccompanied children who have come to Sweden in 2015 and onwards? Method: Qualitative method was chosen for this study in which we formulated a questionnaire consisting of 20 semi-structured questions and interviewed a group of nine experienced social workers in Gothenburg region. The interviews were done digitally or by telephone due to Corona pandemic. All the interviews were recorded and then transcribed. Results: The respondents had experienced the situation in 2015 as “stressful”, “very tough”, “chaotic” and “overwhelming” as neither the counties nor the society at large was ready for such a huge influx of refugees. As a consequence, the basic needs of the unaccompanied children were not fulfilled, such as right to shelter, and allocation of case officers and legal guardians were delayed. It had a negative effect on the children’s integration process and uncertainty about their asylum process had caused psychiatric illness. Conclusion: The social workers could not follow their guidelines of in accordance with The Social Services Act in 2015. They were instead forced to prioritize the basic needs of the children, such accommodation, daily expenses and school over integration and empowerment. It got better, however, as the situations improved later on as the counties had employed more social workers, interpreters and legal guardians.

Ensamkommande barns upplevelser och erfarenheter av Sveriges psykiatri-sjukvård : En kvalitativ studie / Unaccompanied minors' experiences and Experiences of Sweden's Psychiatry Care : A Qualitative Study

Salam Mohammed, Hawraa January 2023 (has links)
This study explores the challenges that unaccompanied minors face in accessing healthcare, especially mental health services, in Sweden. It uses a qualitative approach with five partici-pants aged 18–25, who were previously unaccompanied minors. Through interviews, the study identifies themes and patterns related to the theoretical framework, incorporating the KASAM theory and transcultural psychiatry, which emphasize self-reflection and cultural factors. The results reveal difficulties such as fear of impacting the asylum process, language barriers, anda lack of knowledge within the healthcare system. The study aims to contribute to understanding and improvements within the healthcare system. Limitations include a focus on Swedish conditions and the age group of 18–25. Suggestions for future research involve exploring wait times for psychiatric care and effectively communicating knowledge about mental health to these children to identify areas for improvement in healthcare. Overall, the study underscores the need to overcome barriers, customize healthcare to individual needs, and enhance understanding of this vulnerable group.
