Tanger entre imaginaire géographique et projet urbain / Tangier between geographical imaginaries and urban project

Sanoussi, Anas 30 June 2017 (has links)
The objective of this study is to understand how circulates the tourism imaginaries of the city of Tangier through its touristic trajectory. The tourism discourse on the destination rely on a powerful imaginary of the city which configures heterogeneous representations inherited from the past of the city which stood out, early, as city-world then as a literary top-place of the 19th century. The work on the narrative gap in the points of view of the diverse actors in copresence on the territory reveals the modes of consumption and of (re) production of the tourism imaginaries to build or slow down the metropolisation of the postcolonial city. On one band, the dynamics of the action around the heritages allows to understand the role of the tourism in the territorial anchoring of dormant geographical imaginaries. On the other band, the urban project conception by the state actors highlights the way are got back and disinfected the images of the tourism in the elaboration of the relation of the city to the world towards to integrate it into the global economy.

Contribution pour la caractérisation d'un "Paysage urbain durable" dans les opérations d'aménagement à Paris / Contribution to the characterization of a "sustainable townscape" trough the urban planning in Paris

About de Chastenet, Cedissia 28 November 2011 (has links)
If it seems evident, since a few decades, to protect the architectural heritage during renewal operations or urban planning, the environmental protection is a much more recent preoccupation and has become an imperative only since the emergence of the concept of sustainable development in the 1990s. Through these two themes, i.e. the heritage and the environment, the landscaped quality of the urban projects always seems to be implicit in every regulations, steps or specifications of the operations of development without, however, being explicitly quoted as an objective to be reached. This research suggests to connect both notions of townscape, linked to the protection of the heritage, and sustainable development, including beside the social and the economic aspect the question of the environment, in order not to neglect, under pretext of "making" sustainable districts, the landscaped incidences. The historic and statutory analysis of the term of townscape, whose validity has already been demonstrated on the Parisian territory, together with some reflections on the emergence of the notion of sustainable development in the Parisian administration, led us to evoke a new representation of the "ideal" city as the origin of new urban forms. Finally, the detailed study of three sustainable projects of development, allowed us to identify new ways of monitoring in which the initiatives of sustainable development and evaluation play an increasing role. The consideration of the landscaped quality, as contributing to the "manufacturing" of sustainable townscapes and sustainable urban project, seems already acquired by the actors even if it doesn't yet appear clearly, until these days, in the monitoring of the operations. This research develops the first elements of an answer in order to consider and evaluate urban landscaped quality as a real objective in the conception, realization and maintenance of sustainable districts

Etre et écrire (de) Los Angeles : Wanda Coleman / Being and writing (from) Los Angeles : Wanda Coleman

Joseph, Charles 03 June 2014 (has links)
This study aims at shedding some new light upon the many correlations existing between the Los Angeles cityspace and Wanda Coleman’s writings. As an African American woman born in Watts, Los Angeles in 1946, Coleman is the author of a significant literary oeuvre. Whether regarding the urban evolution and construction of the city, its ethnic composition, its socioeconomic conditions or its cultural development, the megalopolis can be read explicitly and implicitly throughout the author’s work, which started in 1979 and ended with the posthumous co-publication of The Love Project in 2014.Post World War II Los Angeles and the great mutations that the territory has been undergoing are, for Coleman, an unending source of material that are both motivating her writing and influencing her craft. The privileged witness of a city under the firm grasp of postmodern ideology of which Los Angeles seems to be the epicenter, Coleman’s work shows the ever-growing gap between an everyday life that is getting more and more brutal and an idealized imagery of the city that imposes itself as the American Way of Life par excellence. That unreachable goal for a disadvantaged and disenfranchised portion of society (about to become the majority of the Los Angeles population), is projected in a perpetual renewal of the American Dream, maintained within reaching distance, as an obscene strategy serving social appeasement. Wanda Coleman thus intends to unsettle an illusion that has been perpetrated and widely distributed through and by Hollywood whose influences, in a mass-media transmission era, cannot be under-estimated. Because she has been able to consider and apprehend the overall dehumanizing process for as long as she can remember, that Coleman is able to assess the import of her art and thus sets its objectives: to rehumanize the dehumanized.

Going West : using landscape to regenerate urban form

Smit, P.G. 03 March 2011 (has links)
Everyone wants to live in a healthy environment, an idea that has always been closely associated with the healthy landscape. Pretoria CBD is no longer a place that offers such a landscape; it is congested, fragmented and placeless. People move far and wide to get away from its hostile environments, chasing after the high gloss images of nature displayed on the billboards and posters of suburbia. They race to find a patch of land within the security complexes and estates of the east, all the while being savagely pursued by the evils of urban sprawl and decentralization. Surely there must be a way of addressing mans need and desire for landscape without perpetuating urban problems and destroying the very nature they strive for? In order to ensure a sustainable future for Pretoria needs to investigate new ways to deal with the urban problems of sprawl and decay. This thesis explores the potential of using landscape as the basis with which one can reorder and reconstruct the urban form in a way that will offer people the ideals they search within a sustainable urban environment. The investigation starts at a regional scale in order to holistically address urban issues and identify opportunities and then works its way across a range of scales down to detail design and place making. It looks new methods of constructing contemporary landscapes not by mere superimposition but by working with the current and historic urban fabric as well as the social, historical and environmental processes that have shaped it over time. It looks to the far from idyllic, yet brutally honest, post-industrial landscape of Pretoria West to construct hybrid landscapes. Arguing that if one were to genuinely offer people a healthy landscape, one they can experience and relate to, the might actually want to live in the city, in return awakening spontaneous urban renewal. / Dissertation (ML(Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2011. / Architecture / unrestricted

Beneath the arches : re-appropriating the spaces of infrastructure in Manchester

Rosa, Brian January 2014 (has links)
This thesis sets out to explore the implications that transport infrastructures have on the production and perception of the urban built environment. Particularly, it focuses on the Victorian brick viaducts constructed to support the elevated railway in Manchester, England. It concentrates on Manchester’s post-industrial restructuring and re-imaging since the late 1960s, exploring how the presence of brick railway viaducts, as well as the uses beneath their arches, have impacted strategies for revalorisation in the wake of gradual deindustrialisation. In exploring the changing symbolic economy of landscapes dominated by railway infrastructure, as well as the shifting uses and images of railway arches, this thesis explores the interplay between political economy and the aesthetic and symbolic dimensions of urban regeneration. Upon establishing the mutually constituted history of Manchester’s elevated railways and its city centre and demonstrating how this 19th century process has shaped the form and character of the city, it excavates a cultural history of the infrastructural landscapes of the city. Special emphasis is placed on the uses and perceptions of railway arches, which have long served as symbols of dereliction and social disorder. These spatial and cultural histories act as a foundation for analysing how the city’s railway viaducts have been implicated in the re-imagining of Manchester as a post-industrial city. These histories and representations are explored in relation to property-led strategies of environmental improvement, industrial displacement, and heritage tourism along the southern fringe of Manchester city centre, focusing on three thematic and spatially bound case studies. These case studies rely on documentary data of planning and design strategies, interviews with elite actors involved in the re-imaging of Manchester city centre, and ethnographic observation. Using critical discourse analysis, the thesis unpacks the narrative relationship between dominant representations of these spaces and professional justifications for their material and symbolic reconfiguration.

Analysis of urban renewal program and environmental valorization and its applicability in the region of the Paraíba Valley / Análise do programa de requalificação urbana e valorização ambiental de cidades e sua aplicabilidade na região do Vale do Paraíba

Eduardo Antônio de Paula Souza e Guimarães 17 March 2007 (has links)
This research aims to orient the actions of public policies regarding urban renewal and associated environmental valorization. Urban renewal seeks to recover the quality of the inhabited environment in order to improve the quality of human life. We cannot think about this without considering the natural landscape, which always interferes directly or indirectly with this condition. The objective is to develop technical and methodological procedures that will support the elaboration of directives for urban renewal and environmental valorization, through planning and management, whose guiding principles allow the municipalities to identify their characteristics, their critical points, and their needs for renewal, leading them to draft the summary of the municipal renewal project in its territory. To control the efficacy of the actions and the diagnosis of the current situation, it will be necessary to create Environmental and Urban Indicators which will mark the entire process of quality improvement of the municipalities. Such instruments are also intended to be the communication channel between the community and its manager. Cities today are developed in a linear growth system, without the necessary replenishment of primary environmental sources. The inversion of this linearity, with the introduction of urban growth in an environmental cycle in which its ecosystem is always nurtured, will avoid the degradation of the natural environment. The city must have its urban expansion limited, with the creation of recycling incentives for the use of urban soil, before any urban expansion is initiated. The creation or expansion of urban agglomerations must be planned through means of sustainability, where not only is its construction planned, but also its use, maintenance, and disassembly, but not its demolition. The constructive processes and elements must be chosen taking into consideration the entire life cycle of the urban space. The research adopts the Polis Program Urban Renewal and Environmental Valorization of the Cities Program, currently at work in Portugal, as a reference for the definition of the research components. Within the realm of municipal action, the program intends to implant a certain limited number of actions that can as a whole lead the municipality to the goal of sustainability, creating a series of public policies that allow the continuity of this development over a long term. As a case study, municipalities located in the basin of the Paraitinga River are being utilized. This is a historic region in the Paraíba Valley in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. This region gets its name from the Paraíba do Sul River, which flows throughout the region, and is flanked by the Mantiqueira Mountain Range to the west, and by Mar Mountain Range to the east, both regions with a predominance of Atlantic Forest vegetation.

It can be designed and made, not only with reforestation or recycled woods; But also with iron, wire, resistant plastics and recycled, and these are reused after being discarded. This work has the general objective to investigate how Sustainability is being inserted in the teaching-learning course of Architecture and Urbanism with the development of ephemeral furniture. To achieve this goal, a qualitative research will be developed, through a Case Study carried out in the Architecture and Urbanism with the development of ephemeral furniture. For its development, will also be conducted Documentary Research, Direct Observation and Participant, as well as semi-structured interviews in which information will be obtained from the coordinators, teachers and students of the University course. The research pointed out the importance of the students of the Architecture and Urbanism course in thinking about the elaboration, confection and donation of sustainable furniture, providing the social interaction within the mentioned institution. The last part was applied to the students directly responsible for the elaboration of the ephemeral furniture, and, through the results indicated, it is possible to verify that 80% agree with the insertion of Sustainability within the Object Design discipline, and 88% with the professional awareness. This identification points out that, of the 30 students interviewed, 24 of them emphasize the importance of these furniture for the social life in the institution. 60% of the six teachers involved and interviewed in the course partially agree on the students' awareness of Sustainability in being a factor of great importance to think about Sustainability within the profession and that 100% of those responsible for accompanying the students were receptive Urban furniture inside the institution. Histoire de l'architecture / History of Architecture

Rahm, Philippe 17 December 2019 (has links)
The History of Architecture we have received it in recent decades was strongly influenced by the critical and post-modern thinking of the second half of the 20th century, when political, social, economic and cultural reasons dominated the system of explaining the causes and consequences of the emergence of a form, a style or a language. Induced by a context of massive and easy access to energy (that of coal and then oil) and by the progress of medicine (with the invention of vaccines and antibiotics), this History that precedes us, which can be described as cultural, has largely ignored the physical, geographical, climatic or bacteriological reasons that have in reality shaped, in a decisive way, over the centuries, the architectural form, that of buildings, cities and even interior decoration. My thesis entitled "History of Architecture" highlights the natural, physical, biological or climatic causes that have influenced the course of architectural history and its figures, from prehistory to today. Reconstructing the history of architecture on its objective, material and real facts makes it possible to understand how to face the major environmental challenges of our century and better build for tomorrow in the context of the climate urgency.

Náměstí Míru - dostavba a rekonstrukce veřejného prostoru v Brně / Náměstí míru - extension and rehabilitation of public space in Brno

Karešová, Kateřina January 2017 (has links)
The aim of this work is to revitalize the public space of náměstí Míru on Kraví hora. The work tries to find further functional use of the, which would include rebuilding the currently unused former military premises at Lerchova street while respecting the current state of the surrounding buildings and greenery. The proposed solution of a new square design signifies urban space as the center of the Masaryk's Quarter. The design takes into account the current location of the tramway balloon loop, which is located in the middle of the area and shapes the unique character of the location. This element of transport is thus left at the heart of the entire urban design. It forms an islet made up of designed buildings with a square created inside. The intention is to build a lively core of the district attracting attention not only from a local populace.
