Maheux, Frédérick 04 1900 (has links)
This master thesis studies video games‘ spatiality and the ludic adaptation of real locations. It focuses on one specific location, the subway, and on its representation in the horror genre. The research is structured by three levels of adaptation : systemic, sociohistorical and technological. Based on examples of games compared with the reality of the subway, those three levels of adaptation enable at once an exploration of the impact of the virtual location on the gaming experience and of the external influences on the game design.

Building the polis : the evolution of ionian and carian cities from the end of the IVth cent. BC to the middle of the Ist cent. BC

Larguinat Turbatte, Gabrièle 30 November 2013 (has links)
The Hellenistic period is the time when the aspect of the cities of Ionia and Caria is changing gradually. In almost each city, an amount of new public buildings progressively shaping a new urban landscape that looks like a mirror of the city that created it. It is this unprecedented transformation of urban centers during the Hellenistic period that this thesis studies, with attention to the cities of Ionia and Caria in all their diversity. We aim at making sense of the changes in these two regions, which experienced hellenisation and urbanisation early ; they are also characterized by interactions between cities and Hellenistic kings. This study suggests ways of understanding civic societies through the city. We are looking at t the most remarkable features of the city : its public buildings . In the first part devoted to urban fortifications, buildings housing political activities , and areas of cultural life , public monuments are mentioned as spaces of civic life , and we search for the reason why many new buildings were built. Then, the study describes how urban space becomes a place of truly urban life, with a landscape, facilities and a specific spatial organization. In a third section, we show how the cities’ economic prosperity is reflected in stone buildings – some of them housing economic activities – reflects the will of cities to develop and oversee economic activities and the wealth of the poleis. This also helps explain a sustained construction activity made possible by the existence of abundant and varied resources available to cities. Finally, the reflection deals with political and social aspects of the evolution of urban space. This last part is placed in a broader historical perspective, that of the evolution of the Hellenistic city.

Za novou Prahu! Tradice, vize a budování (obrazu) města po roce 1945 / Towards new Prague! Traditions, visions and constructing the city and its image after 1945

Kurz, Michal January 2015 (has links)
The thesis focuses on the construction and symbolic encoding of Prague from 1945 to the late 1950s, with emphasis on the Stalinist era. Based on an analysis of historical texts and architectural projects, the thesis studies the motivations and tactics, which the post-war political and professional elites sought to manifest their own values and ideological principles in the area of the capital city. Through the analysis of historical concepts of "old" and "new" Prague examines the thesis the changing relationship between tradition and modernity in the image of the city. The sociocultural phenomenon of Stalinism is thematized as a specific part of the long process of modernization, which passes through Prague during the first half of the 20th century. The thesis deals also with the attributes that should characterize the "new" socialist Prague and with the ways of using the Soviet patterns and local historical traditions. Keywords: Prague, city, image of the city, architecture, urbanism, memory, heritage, socialist realism, stalinism, 1950s

Habiter : sciences, phénoménologie et herméneutique à partir de Gaston Bachelard et Maurice Merleau-Ponty / Living in : sciences, phenomenology and hermeneutics from Gaston Bachelard and Maurice Merleau-Ponty's point of view

Mickala, Cyrille 13 June 2014 (has links)
Is it still possible to inhabitate and live the laid out and constructed space in particular, as for considering the techno and industrial flood that determines and influences the field of modern architecture? Rationalism and functionalism of a given trend of modern architecture by incorporating techno and industrial progress in the world of home, seems to condemn the experience of living in an irreversible crisis. The architectural activity wanting to meet scientific and techno-industrial progress, it requires practical experience in home and prescientific places of life, of living standards arising from the only reason. It is a general an architecture and a modern, abstract and functionalist urbanism that develop along the path of rational objectivity initiated by Galileo and Descartes, they control , manage and aestheticize the whole world and all human experience to space by stripping poetic , mythological and emotional considerations. Thus, the construction of human institutions housing becomes in identifying the crisis of living a «prosaic and technological process deriving directly from the mathematical reason, a functional diagram, or a rule of formal suits «in drawback of the concrete experience of living. But if the architecture does not matter to itself, if it is not a practice that is an end in itself because it opens to another, how can we still philosophically hope to authentically, originally and poetically live the world and the space of the house in particular? Philosophy, by phenomenological and hermeneutic approach inheritated from Gaston Bachelard and Merleau-Ponty presents to the modern experience of living, original significant ways that respond to the crisis it faces. Renewing differently more than the only purely rational knowledge the relations of man to the space, it presents itself as a remarkable way of re- understanding, rereading and re-enchantment of the original experience of inhabitating the world , the city and the space of the house.

London calling: o papel da cultura e da criatividade na gestão de uma cidade-marca / London calling: the role of culture and creativity in the management of a city brand

Fragalle, Natália Pauletto 22 March 2019 (has links)
This work aimed to understand the processes of building and managing a city brand and its links to the creative city concept, as well as its consequent impact in the urban policies. Here London was taken as a case study, as the capital of the country that first adopted the discourse of creativity in its public policies in the 1990s and as one of the main concentrations of global economic power in contemporary capitalism. It sought to explore how London came to be promoted as a creative city, with culture at the heart of economic and urban development policies. In this sense, this work analysed the process of creation, management and export of the London brand, developed at the turn of the 21st century, showing the tensions and approximations between the different administrations of the British central government and the municipal administrations of London. It also sought to explain how this process culminated in the hosting of the 2012 Olympic Games, used as a tool to direct resources and the media attention towards the mega regeneration project of Londons East End. From the analysis of the new institutional arrangements and the discursive strategies adopted to legitimize the realisation of such a project, this work finally sought to understand the urban implications of the branding process, focusing on the impacts in the East End and more specifically in Hackney Wick promoted as the newest creative hub in London - exploring the tensions between the \'London brand\' and the \'really existing London\'.

Coordonner urbanisme et transport ferroviaire régional : le modèle à l'épreuve des pratiques : étude croisée des métropoles de Toulouse et Nantes / Coordination between regional railway transport and town planning : from concept to practices : the case of Toulouse and Nantes metropolitan areas

Maulat, Juliette 11 December 2014 (has links)
The coherence between transportation and planning has impose itself as a key figure of sustainable mobility and urbanism policies. In this context, regional rail transport is introduced as the framework of metropolitan development while regional stations and their surroundings are seen as the privileged places of urban densification. Thanks to a cross-analysis of two French metropolitain areas (Toulouse and Nantes) this dissertation confronts those new planning norms and the practices. Based on an important empirical work, this study analyses the regional rail and planning policy making processes at several scales (metropolitan, local, micro-local). This thesis explains the specific issues at stake in the coordination of urbanism and regional rail transport policies and highlights the constraints (institutional, territorial, political and physical) on their implementation. This work also reveals changing practices in public action and a bottom-driven overcoming of sectorial segmentations. These changes are the results of the necessity for public actors to respond to concrete problems with the resources available to them, more than they are the result of the injunction of coherence.

Urbanismo ecológico, do princípio à ação: o caso de Itaquera, São Paulo, SP / Ecological urbanism, from the principle to the action: the case of Itaquera, São Paulo, SP

Akinaga, Patricia Harumi 23 May 2014 (has links)
Ecological Urbanism has emerged as a way to reconcile the landscape with urban occupation, ruled by the potentialities and limitations of natural resources. Green áreas do not function only beautifying and improving the visual and environmental quality, they become true engineering artifacts and elements of a high performance green infrastructure. The street tree system gains strength and scale while connecting fragments of urban forests and green areas scattered in the urban fabric. The research results change the look on the river floodplains. Segregated in the contemporary city, under Ecological Urbanism principles, floodplains become structural elements and links of the urban fabric adding great value. The thesis presents the hypothesis that it is possible to implement the Ecological Urbanism in São Paulo through the implementation of a comprehensive process and tools ranging from public policies, private sector actions and community engagement resulting on the improvement of environmental quality and urban life. The research focuses on Itaquera neighborhood impacted by the implementation of large urban facilities part of an institutional hub and home to the new soccer stadium of Corinthians club that will host World Cup 2014 games. Through field surveys, mapping and analysis of case studies in the United States and in South Africa is possible to identify a clear opportunity for transformation in the vicinity of the arena based on ecological principles. At last, the research presents an Ecological Urbanism proposal for the surroundings of the Arena Corinthians taking advantage of its local potentiality, green areas, hydrograph and new dynamic as a result of new public and private investments.
