This study aims to defend the use of Brazilian song as material for the teaching of singing in Brazil, seeking to eliminate biases associated with this repertoire which is sometimes considered inappropriate by singing teachers to teach the vocal technique. The argument shows that Brazilian song can be, for native speakers of Brazilian Portuguese, the most appropriate vehicle for the teaching of vocal technical procedures for students at basic, intermediate or advanced levells. The study is based on bibliographic research in the area of vocal physiology and the pedagogy of singing, as well as in texts related to cognitive processes and different models of vocal production. A total of 40 Brazilian songs from various eras and authors is selected in order to demonstrate their pedagogical potential, organized by gradual increasing of technical difficulty, and aiming to address all phases of technical development of the singer. The texts of the songs receive formal and literal translations into English, to facilitate access to these songs by singers who speak other languages. The scores of the songs are include phonetic transcriptions, which demonstrate possible ways of organization and phonetic pronunciation of the texts, based on the artistic and pedagogical experience of the author. Additional information and interpretive guidelines accompany each song.

Chen Yi's Song Set As in a Dream: The Merging of Chinese and Western Musical Idioms

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: In an interview with the author, composer Chen Yi shared thoughts regarding her inspiration to compose the piece As in a Dream. She composed the first version in 1988 for soprano, violin, and cello. Left unpublished, this work was re-done in 1994 with the Chinese instruments zheng and pipa in place of the violin and cello. As in a Dream is a setting of two linked poems of six lines each by Qingzhao Li, one of the earliest female poets in China. Chen Yi kept the voice part the same in the two versions, but adapted the accompaniment to suit the Chinese instruments. This study of As in a Dream focuses on the 1994 version, and especially on the first song, with a view to introducing the singer to its Chinese elements. To help performers to understand better the text of the set, a translation and transliteration of the two poems by Qingzhao Li are offered with line-by-line interpretation. An introduction to the history and characteristics of the zheng and the pipa is supported by examples of the uses of these instruments in the songs. Drawing upon information provided by Chen Yi in the interview with the author, a discussion follows of Mandarin speech tones and their effect on the melodic design of As in a Dream, with music examples. An examination of traditional Beijing Opera styles of singing, with insights provided by Rao Lan, the soprano for whom the work was written, leads to a description of the fusion vocal technique required for performance of As in a Dream and some of the rules for diction in Mandarin Chinese. Intended as an introductory guide for the soprano contemplating performance of Chen Yi’s As in a Dream, this study also reveals the combination of Eastern and Western musical characteristics in these songs and gives examples of how the music interprets the veiled meaning of the poetry. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Music 2015

January 2010 (has links)
Method: The twenty Argentine singers, randomly divided into two groups, Fênix and Pegasus, received basically the same material, the only difference being a DVD given to the first group, with the recording (both audio and video) of the Phonetic Chart of Brazilian Portuguese as Sung, recorded by the author of this study. The singers were videotaped singing the song in question. This tape served as a reference for the six evaluators, doctors in their areas (singing, speech therapy, linguistics), to make a qualitative analysis of the singers' diction, attributing scores for diction of the words of the song as sung by the singers who participated in this study. The results of the evaluation showed that the singers of Fênix group (which received the audiovisual track) had pronunciation more in keeping with PB (Brazilian Portuguese), reaching a 77,8% value at this point. The Pégasus group achieved a 22,2% score (singers that did not receive an audiovisual track). 85% of the singers considered that a printed version of the PB Phonetic Chart was not enough as a tool to understand the sounds of Brazilian Portuguese as Sung, and 15% considered the opposite. 78.6% of the singers evaluated with the closest pronunciation of Brazilian Portuguese were from the Fênix group. Thus, the use of audiovisual resources of the Phonetic Chart of the Brazilian Portuguese as Sung was considered essential to correct ... / The purpose of the present study is to verify how the training of the mixed voice would favor the vocal work of the participants. For that, a group of actors and actresses underwent a vocal trainin g of the method for a period of three months. The qualitative methodology of the work was structured by content analysis on semi - structured interviews conducted with the sample after the training, and auditory observation on the recordings of the classes performed. The parameters analyzed were v ocal awareness and technical appropriation. Both were elaborated in the course of this research, and subdivided into four levels each. All participants were classified according to the observed parameters. The resul ts show that, even with a reduced training schedule, all the participants obtained positive and satisfactory results after the training period . We can conclude that all artists have broadened their sensory and bodily perceptions regarding the use of voice, better perceiving their instruments, and how they can use them better. The training brought an opening to the spectrum of self - knowledge of these artists expanding their personal repertoires, and from then on, reverberate in their artistic creations.

De la tragédie parlée shakespearienne à la tragédie lyrique : mutations, intertextualité et interprétation / Dal dramma shakespeariano alla tragedia in musica : mutazioni, intertestualità e interpretazione / Transforming Shakespeare's tragedies into operas : mutations, Intertextuality and Performance

Pouliquen, David 23 May 2016 (has links)
Vocal rendition, the nexus of the complex articulation of text and music, gives the coordinates of operatic dramaturgy. It is, in fact, through singing that this hybrid conjunction between these two media appears as one and the same autonomous unitary action. Thus, opera transcends the hiatus of the juxtaposition of two protean contents, with limited synergies and numerous antagonisms, in a homogeneous semiotic content that can be appreciated in its representation. It effects the passage from a bipolarized matter to an immaterial conciliatory energy that is made to be performed. This transcendent combination makes the source work of art suffer, as a result of vocal technique, the musical language and the contingencies of the operatic performance, in the same way that the music submits to the requirements of tragedy. This research work aims at bringing up questions about the sense and the issues at stake in the operatic tragedy as well in the Shakespearean tragedy, about what stands out from the entirety of text altered by the musical requirements and the music given over to it. It also undertakes to shed light on certain functions of the language and the music forms which, even if they are not fixed or universal, become effective in the singular case of the works that are examined; and also on some latent data of Shakespeare’s tragedies which would open new floodgates to the outpouring of human passions. This poses the question of what the connection between the heterogeneous contents of the operatic tragedy, releases, modifies and stifles in the source drama.

En oförställd röst : En kvalitativ studie i hur tre sångare uppfattar röstmetoden The Voice Work

Arvidsson, Cornelia January 2020 (has links)
Syftet med föreliggande arbete var att utforska tre sångares upplevelser av röstmetoden The Voice Work. Forskningsfrågan lyder: Hur uppfattar de intervjuade sångarna röstmetoden The Voice Work? / The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of three singers within the voice method The Voice Work. The study was conducted through qualitative interviews in the fall of 2019 through hermeneutic analysis and is discussed against a background of contemporary experience-based voice methods as well as voice research in popular musical genres. The result is presented in three chapters: The quest for authenticity, Body and psyche - a whole and Development. The interviewed singers perceive The Voice Work as a method with the aim of achieving authenticity in using the voice. The interviewed singers experience an accepting attitude to their voice. The Voice Work gives the interviewed singers an experience of the voice and the psychic being as a whole. The sound of voice and intonation is controlled to a lesser extent, helping them not dissembling the voice. The interviewed singers talk about experiences of a freer voice, inner presence, self-insights and how the work affected them emotionally. Through the breathing exercise and sounding that occurs in The Voice Work, the interviewed singers train to try to relate non-judgmentally to themselves and their body, they experience a relaxation in voice and breathing and that they sing more gently which they use in their vocal training. Interviewed singer Lisa uses the method in performances to reduce the focus on results. The interviewed singers also believe that the breathing exercise caused them to find a mental focus, which they lacked tools for in other voice methods.

Andas in, sjung ut! : En självstudie om andning och röstspänningar. / Breathe in, sing out! : A self-study on breathing and voice tension.

Eklöf, Felicia January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate whether or not being conscious of your breath while singing could eliminate my voice tension. The purpose is supported by the following research question: Can focusing on the breath eliminate voice tension? The study is based on a phenomenological life-world perspective where video logbook is used as a documentation method. The result is presented on the basis of three themes: tensions, tools and breathing during singing. Finally, a discussion is conducted in relation to the previous research and other literature presented in the background chapter. Among other things, the discussion leads to the conclusion about how breathing can be seen as a tool for creating the awareness that is needed to eliminate voice tension. Finally, the significance of the work and further research opportunities is explained.

Är det bara en sångteknikalitet? : Hur sångpedagoger väljer sina termer / Is it only a vocal technicality? : How singing teachers choose their terms

Hed, Martina January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate vocal teachers views on and experiences with the singing technology phenomenon. The study’s research questions concerns how singing pedagogues verbalize their views on singing technique, their terms about register, methods and their relation to research. The starting points for implementation is semi structured interviews with four singing pedagogues whom all have a teachers degree. The study’s theoretical framework covers phenomenology and focus on intentionality and lifeworld phenomenology. The interviews was recorded with phonogram and later transcribed and analyzed through thematic analysis. The different themes which are presented in the result are as follows: the vocal teachers views on singing techniques, the vocal teachers experiences and perceptions of registers, the vocal teachers own methods and singing techniques and methods in relation to research. The result visualizes both similarities and differences in how they view and verbalize their approaches to singing technology, terms about register, methods and research. The experiences that form the basis of these approaches, however, are experienced in their own lifeworld and have in different ways been important for how they experience the phenomenon of singing technique and relates to it through teaching. The result also shows that the singing pedagogues agree that research on singing is very important, nonetheless they themselves seldom turn to research. The discussion is further conferring around the themes that emerge in the result in relation to the previous background and the theoretical perspective that permeates the study.

Hellström, Viveka January 2012 (has links)
The aim of the study is to enhance the understanding of voice expression in jazz music, focusing on the interplay between words and music in recordings of selected singers. From a hermeneutic approach five recordings of different Swedish female jazz singers, all selected as Jazz in Sweden- artists, has been described and interpreted from a vocal pedagogical perspective. In relation to the jazz vocal tradition it turned out that two of the singers in different ways challenged the conventions of jazz singing. Study findings indicate that education strengthened female jazz singers to find different roles in their interaction with other musicians in the ensemble, also through vocal improvisation and as composers. All singers in the study expressed themselves through lyrics in English that mainly dealt with love motifs. In detailed analysis of the songs and the singers interpretations of lyrics the complexity of the singers vocal production was shown. The study shows how lyrics for the singer can fulfill different functions in the musical interplay, and also implies that studies of recorded voices can be an educational tool, for both jazz vocal teachers as well as for ensemble teachers.
