Human-Computer Interface Design for Online Tutoring: Visual Rhetoric, Pedagogy, and Writing Center Websites

This dissertation examines the theory and praxis of taking an expanded concept of the human-computer interface (HCI) and working with the resulting concept to design a writing center website that facilitates online tutoring while fostering a conversational approach for online tutoring sessions. In order to foster a conversational approach, I explore the ways in which interactive digital technologies support the collaborative and communicative nature of online tutoring. I posit that my research will yield a deeper understanding of the visual rhetoric of human-designed computer interfaces in general and writing center online tutoring websites in particular, and will, at the same time, provide support and rationale for the use of interactive digital technologies that utilize the space within the interface to foster a conversational approach to online tutoring, an outcome that the writing center community strongly encourages but acknowledges is difficult to achieve in online tutoring situations (Bell, Harris, Harris and Pemberton, Gillespie and Lerner, Hobson, Monroe, Rickley, Thomas et. al). The resulting prototype design that I submit as part of this dissertation was developed by considering the surface and conceptual dimensions of the HCI along with pedagogies that support interactivity, exploration, communication, collaboration, and community.

Facebook社群人脈網絡與粉絲頁推薦之研究 / The Study of Recommendation on Social Connections and Fan Pages on Facebook

Facebook自從在台灣推出以來,已有超過一千三百萬的使用者帳號,是最熱門的社群網站,其中蘊含了龐大的使用者資料。從使用者學歷、工作經歷和喜歡的粉絲頁中可以一定程度上地判斷出使用者的背景與喜好,若能利用分析過的資訊將使用者分群,以供交友或導向到可能喜歡的粉絲頁,就能開發潛在客戶進而掌握商機。 本研究旨在完成一個線上系統,透過Facebook上可供擷取個人的資料:學歷、工作經歷以及喜歡的粉絲頁等資訊,針對這些量化過的資訊,經Kmeans將使用者分群分類,藉以作為協同過濾式推薦。目前實驗結果將有效個人資料4417筆進行分群,以使用者喜歡的粉絲頁比例(本研究整合成48種)加上工作經歷與學歷,最終分成10群,以作為交叉推薦之憑據和延伸研究。研究過程分實驗組與對照組,實驗組是本研究推薦的10筆粉絲頁,也就是使用者與所屬群集質心比例相差較多的粉絲頁類型;對照組則是選取使用者與母體中有較多比例差距的10筆,以證明本研究的推薦模型有效。 最後由使用者針對兩組推薦結果進行滿意度評分之比較,總共收回使用者回饋68筆,實驗組與對照組的平均推薦滿意度分數分別為0.5743、0.4268,對兩者作信心水準為95%的t檢定,結果為有充分證據支持實驗組大於對照組,可證明本研究對於推薦準確性的幫助,達成本研究目的。 由此實驗可以確定在Facebook上以使用者屬性為基礎的粉絲頁與人脈推薦是有意義與價值的,也說明真實數據能應用在社群網站的研究。希冀本研究的結果能帶動其他社群網站研究朝使用真實數據去分析佐證,讓社群網站的研究結果能更貼近使用者的真實行為。 / Facebook is one of the most popular social websites in Taiwan, and it has over 13 million accounts with lots of user data. One can tell a user’s background and preference by his education, work experience, and preferred fan pages. If we direct the right user to the right fan pages by analyzing information and clustering users through recommendation or personal connections, we will be able to reach potential customers and to further business opportunities. The goal of this study is to complete an online system to assume collaborative fan page recommendation. Base on users’ education degree, work experience and preferred fan pages, users’ background. Then use the Kmeans algorithm to cluster quantified personal information to recommend fan pages and social relationships. Currently, the result of the experiment shows 10 clusters, which contain 4417 users, and we use it as a foundation of crossing recommendation. To prove the effect of this study, we divide study into two groups, an experimental group and control group. The former one represents recommended top 10 fan pages that include the fan page types with highest difference of percentage between user’s attributes and cluster centroid; the latter one represents top 10 fan pages that include the fan page types with highest difference of percentage between users’ attributes and proportion respectively. Finally, we use users score satisfaction for each group to compare. There are 68 pieces of feedback, and the average satisfaction scores of the experimental group and the control group are 0.5743 and 0.4268, respectively. On both a confidence level of 95% for t-test, the result shows there is more sufficient evidence to support the satisfaction of experimental group than the control group. We can prove accuracy for recommendation to achieve the goal in this study. This experiment determines not only the fan page recommendation based on user attributes on Facebook is meaningful and valuable, but also shows real data can be used in social networking studies. We hope the results of this study can lead other social networking studies to analyze with real users’ data in order to make future study on social networking better reflect real users’ behavior.

Nowadays, the establishment of new touch screen technology has changed significantly the way we navigate on the Internet. The requirement to design websites that adapt to various artifacts such as touch screen computers are increasingly a need to consider. The purpose of this study is to discover - What are the specific usability requirements should be addressed in designing of websites for touch screen computers? - In order to examine the essay’s question, it presents a study where five people visiting three different websites on the touch screen computer Ipad. The study was conducted using a participant and structured interview observation in form of a think-aloud method. With the help of video equipment, information was gathered. Respondent's discussions are presented and the study's results are analyzed using a qualitative procedure. The research has contributed mainly to individualize the possible usability problems that concerned interaction with websites on the touch screen computer Ipad. Based on the analysis and the qualitative study it has come usability requirements related to aspects of the website's navigation, interaction and feedback. / I dagens samhälle har etableringen av ny pekskärmsteknik betydligt ändrat vårt sätt att navigera på internet. Kravet på att utforma webbplatser som skall anpassas till olika artefakter så som pekskärmsdatorer blir allt mer ett behov att ta hänsyn till. Syftet med denna studie är att upptäcka ”Vilka särskilda användbarhetskrav bör ställas vid utformning av webbplatser för pekskärmsdatorer?” För att undersöka uppsatsens frågeställning presenteras en studie där fem personer besöker tre webbplatser på pekskärmsdatorn Ipad. Studien genomfördes med hjälp av en deltagande och strukturerad observationsintervju i form av en tänk-högt-metod. Med hjälp av videoutrustning samlades informationen in. Respondenternas samtal presenterades och studiens resultat analyserades med en kvalitativ procedur. Forskningen bidrog framförallt med information om att individualisera de möjliga användbarhetsproblem som finns vid interaktion med webbplatser på pekskärmsdatorn Ipad. Utifrån analysen och den kvalitativa underökningen har det kommit fram användbarhetskrav som rör aspekter inom webbplatsens navigering, interaktion och återkoppling.

The doctoral thesis studied the behaviour of scientists on Internet profiles. The scientific community is founded on communication. The advance of research, the evaluation of research results, the reputation of individual scientists - all rest on constant interaction among the community members. The Internet, as a flexible channel for world-wide communication, has a considerable potential for the scientific community. Besides often discussed consequences for scientific publishing, the Internet also offers new opportunities for self-presentation of scientists. In this thesis, the online presence of scientists was studied with a 'positive lens', concentrating on how the Internet can be used to enhance scientists' individual self-presentation. The doctoral thesis consists of five essays: an overview and four essays documenting separate research projects. The research was founded on the radical constructivist understanding of reality. It was classified as connected to three areas: research on science communication, research on digital identity, and research on generation of online content. Viewing the existing literature in these areas, three focal points were identified, which informed and guided the formulation of research aims and the implementation of research projects: focus on Internet self-presentation, assumption of strategic importance, and need for a holistic view. The aims of the thesis were (A) to develop a holistic understanding of scientists' Internet presence, (B) to study behavioural patterns on scientists' Internet profiles, and (C) to develop an instrument to support the development and management of scientists' Internet self-presentation. Based on these aims, four research projects were carried out. Each project pursued own research questions or objectives using suitable methods, yet all contributed to the overall aims of the thesis. Thus the thesis presents conceptual, empirical, and applied findings resulting from a multi-method approach and contributing both to research on Internet self-presentation as well as to practice in the management of online presence.

Implementation of a Software Extraction Process

<p>Software metrics are a useful tool for assessing software quality and for making predictions. But currently the interpretation of the measured values is based on personal experience and gut feeling. Not much information is available about thresholds and possible ranges of the metric values. In order to be able to define thresholds on which general recommendations could be based, quantitative data has to be obtain for allowing statistical evaluations and further investigations. So far the collection of test projects requires significant manual interaction for downloading and describing metadata.</p><p>This thesis describes a process for automatically obtaining, storing and maintaining a large number of open software projects from SourceForge.NET [1]. The projects are stored in a local folder structure; the meta-data is stored in a local database. The process is automated as far as possible, repeatable, transparent, extendible and flexible.</p>

This paper explores the accessibility for patrons with different physical disabilities in regards to materials, service, the library building and its website at two typical, medium-sized public libraries in Sweden. The case study is based on interviews, observations, and document and literature studies. As a theoretical framework for this study, Buckland’s model of information barriers is used to describe, discuss and evaluate how the two libraries work with accessibility. In addition, international and national guidelines are used to measure whether additional actions are required of the libraries to improve the accessibility. The results show that both libraries are well suited in various respects to provide for the different needs and the requirements of patrons with physical disabilities. Some obstacles still exist in both libraries, especially in the lack of literature in accessible formats in different languages. It is unclear whether the barriers that still exist in both libraries are reflections of the patrons’ needs and demands, or lack thereof.

博物館文物展示網站的服務品質:以國立故宮院為例 / Service quality of museum website displaying artifact: the case of National Palace Museum

隨著資訊及通訊(資通訊)技術的進步,越來越多的博物館服務提供者開始思考如何應用資通訊的技術。位於台灣的國立故宮博物院(故宮)也不例外,已經建置了自己的網站。對於一個博物館網站,可以並可能提供的功能是相當多。而故宮網站期望能提供的功能之一,即是展示文物。傳統的設計方式,網站通常被建置以圖文的方式來展示文物。在這份研究中,我們呈現了一個故宮提出的影音服務提案及原型,the iPalace Video Channel(the iPalace)。這個服務主要藉由影音來展示中華文物,並有著隱喻式設計介面。現在這個由資通技術訊所促成的博物館服務提案就開始被建置,而故宮的管理人員希望知道是否值得發展並建置這個新服務。除此之外,當決定正式佈署這個服務時,故宮的管理人員也希望從已建置的服務原型了解這個服務的優缺點。因此,這份研究特別針對用於展示文物的博物館網站設計了問卷來測量其服務品質、顧客滿意度和行為意向。我們並藉由網路上發放此問卷來調查實驗組(the iPalace)以及對照組(圖文式網站)的使用者。藉由分析問卷測量的結果,我們得到了四個重要的服務品質因素:功能性、內容及使用性、系統穩定性和介面呈現。除此之外,藉由T檢定來分析問卷的測量結果,觀察the iPalace及圖文式網站在這些服務品質因素上,所測到的服務品質、顧客滿意度和行為意向是否存在著統計上顯著的差異。而結果顯示,因為較佳的功能性及介面呈現服務品質,the iPalace的使用者有較高的滿意度,他們也較願意推薦並再次使用這個網站。然而the iPalace於系統穩定性服務品質上的表現較差,原因為較差的反應時間。 / Following the advancement of information and communication technologies (ICT), more and more museum service providers begin to take the ICT applications into considerations. The National Palace Museum (the NPM) in Taiwan is no exception and has built its own website. For a museum website, there are many possible functions which can be provided. One of the NPM website’s desired functions is to display artifacts. With the traditional design, the website is built for displaying artifacts mainly through texts and pictures. In this study, we present the iPalace Video Channel (the iPalace), a new video-based service proposed by the NPM, that displays Chinese artifacts mainly via videos and has a metaphorical interface design. When a new ICT-enabling museum service proposal is initialized, the manager wonders whether it is worthwhile to develop and deploy the new service. And, as soon as we had decided to develop and deploy the service and have obtained a prototype system, the manager would further wants to know the advantages and disadvantages of the new service before full launching it. Thus, this study derives the instrument for measuring the service quality, customer satisfaction and behavioral intention regarding the museum website displaying artifacts. Through an online survey that applies the derived instrument to measure the iPalace and its text-based counterpart, we identify the following four important service quality factors: FULFILLMENT, CONTENT & USABILITY, SYSTEM RELIABLITY and INTERFACE. From the t-test on the survey data, we also assess whether there are statistically differences on each service quality factor between the iPalace and its text-based counterpart. And the result shows that, owing to the better performance on the service quality factors of FULFILLMENT and INTERFACE, the iPalace users are more satisfied with the website than the text-based website users. And they are more willing to recommend and reuse the website than the text-based website users. However, the iPalace has a lower performance on the service quality factor of SYSTEM RELIABILITY due to the slower response time.

網路與出口績效之關係 / The Internet and Export Performance

隨著科技及技術的快速發展,網路逐漸改變企業的營運模式,其中電子商務已成為一項相當重要的商業工具。過去與網路相關的文獻較多著重於探討網路與國際行銷之間的關係,與出口相關的研究也大多探討網站複雜程度或網站內容對出口績效的影響,B2B電子市場對出口績效的影響較少成為研究主題,因此本研究除了網站外,更進一步將B2B電子市場列入影響出口績效的因素。 本文以129間中國大陸中小企業為研究對象,分別探討架設自有網站與採用B2B電子市場對企業出口績效的影響,並檢驗同時架設自有網站與採用B2B電子市場對出口績效是否改變上述之影響。 本研究採用量化方法,以複線性迴歸中的階層式迴歸進行分析,並以平均數平減法以降低共線性問題。模型自變數為網站功能複雜程度、B2B電子市場使用程度;應變數出口績效以出口比例作為衡量方式;控制變數包含員工人數、公司年齡、R&D員工人數、網站語言數、電子平台數、自有品牌數、商展數以及認證數等。 研究結果顯示當網站功能複雜程度愈高時,出口績效愈差;當B2B電子市場使用程度愈高時,出口績效愈佳;而在同時架設功能複雜程度愈高的網站與使用B2B電子市場程度愈高的情況下,出口績效愈佳。當網站功能複雜程度愈高,亦即可直接在網站上進行下單時,對於國內銷售績效的增加大於出口績效的增加,使得出口比例下降;當B2B電子市場使用程度愈高時,表示外包給第三方有助於提升企業比較利益及競爭優勢;而在同時架設網站及採用B2B電子市場下,可互相彌補風險及缺失,因此使出口績效提升。 / With the rapid growth of technology and the Internet, the way people do business is changed dramatically. Specifically, e-commerce is becoming more and more essential as a business vehicle for firms. There is growing volume of literatures doing research on the Internet, but scholarly attention has been paid to define the Internet’s role in marketing. Even if there still some studies attempted to link the Internet to exporting, these literatures put more emphasis on the impacts of firm’s own websites on export performance. Thus, in addition to websites, B2B electronic markets are viewed as the determinant of export performance in this study. 129 samples in this study are selected from Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in China. Multiple linear regression is adopted, and mean-centering is used as a means to reduce multicollinearity. The purpose of this study is to investigate respective impacts of own websites and B2B electronic markets on export performance and impacts of simultaneous use of own websites and B2B electronic markets on export performance. The results indicate that there is negative relationship between level of functionality of websites and export performance. Export performance here is measured by export percentage. In other word, when level of functionality of websites is higher, export percentage becomes lower. Second, the study findings demonstrate that a greater level of B2B electronic market a firm adopts is positively associated with its export performance. Finally, a firm’s simultaneous use of website and B2B electronic market is positively associated with its export performance.

Στόχος της παρούσης διπλωματικής εργασίας είναι η διερεύνηση καταλληλότητας της μεθόδου πολυδιάστατης σταδιακής ανάλυσης για την αξιολόγηση σχεδιασμού ιστοσελίδων. Για την επίτευξη του στόχου, αναπτύχθηκε διαδικτυακή εφαρμογή αξιολόγησης με χρήση μεθόδων πολυδιάστατης σταδιακής ανάλυσης και αξιολογήθηκε τόσο η μέθοδος όσο και η εφαρμογή ως προς την χρησιμότητα της στο πλαίσιο που μας ενδιαφέρει, δηλαδή την αξιολόγηση σχεδιασμού ιστοσελίδων. Η εφαρμογή εκμεταλλεύεται τα πλεονεκτήματα των ιστοσελίδων πλούσιας διαδραστικότητας για την πλήρη υποστήριξη της διαδικασίας αξιολόγησης. / -
