Modeling, Simulation and Optimization Approaches for Design of Lightweight Car Body Structures

Kiani, Morteza 17 August 2013 (has links)
Simulation-based design optimization and finite element method are used in this research to investigate weight reduction of car body structures made of metallic and composite materials under different design criteria. Besides crashworthiness in full frontal, offset frontal, and side impact scenarios, vibration frequencies, static stiffness, and joint rigidity are also considered. Energy absorption at the component level is used to study the effectiveness of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite material with consideration of different failure criteria. A global-local design strategy is introduced and applied to multi-objective optimization of car body structures with CFRP components. Multiple example problems involving the analysis of full-vehicle crash and body-in-white models are used to examine the effect of material substitution and the choice of design criteria on weight reduction. The results of this study show that car body structures that are optimized for crashworthiness alone may not meet the vibration criterion. Moreover, optimized car body structures with CFRP components can be lighter with superior crashworthiness than the baseline and optimized metallic structures.

Concept study for cost and weight reduction of a barge container sized module

Andersson, Ricky January 2018 (has links)
The intention of this thesis is to develop, evaluate new concepts and look over the current design for a container sized barge module. By request of Group Ocean, a cost and weight reduction is the main improvement criteria along with keeping the strength of the module.Five concepts are developed, analyzed and discussed with the supervisor at Group Ocean, where three are decided to be presented here. The other two are left out, since they are considered way too expensive without giving a satisfying result. The three concepts that are developed throughout this thesis are; changing to high strength steel, changing to sandwich panels and increasing stiffeners with smaller dimensions.A structural optimization is made in the software MATLAB to find out the best dimension to use for the sandwich panels. To determine the local stresses, the finite element method is used in Inventor Professional. It is also where the design and CAD modules are built in, so for simplifications it is used for FEA (Finite Element Analysis) as well. To reduce the amount of elements and nodes, shell elements and other structural constraints are used in the FEA. All the concepts are modelled with the same structural constraints so a practical comparison study can be made. The final designs resulted in a total weight reduction up to 40% with a material cost reduction of 12%. Based on what type of material is chosen, the material cost reduction range is between 3-12% and the weight reduction range is between 13-40%.

Weight Loss Maintenance and Physical and Emotional Effects in Obese Subjects Treated with a Protein-Sparing Modified Fast

Jacobs, Hilarie H. 08 1900 (has links)
Weight loss maintenance and emotional and physical problems were investigated in subjects on a protein-sparing modified fast. Four months following a weight reduction program using the protein-sparing modified fast, twenty of the forty-two subjects were contacted. Each was asked to complete a questionnaire related to emotional and physical effects of the diet and a diet history checksheet. Each subject was weighed to determine if weight loss had been maintained. Results of the questionnaire, diet history, and blood chemistry analysis indicate that for these subjects, the modified fast may be safe and effective in reducing and maintaining weight loss over a short time period under close supervision by a physician.

CEM des batteries haute tension allégées pour véhicule électrique : Caractérisation de matériaux et étude du rayonnement électromagnétique / EMC of lightened high voltage battery for electric vehicle : Materials characterization and study of of the radiated electromagnetic field

Tumayan, Rémi 22 January 2016 (has links)
In automotive industry, electric vehicle is becoming more and more attractive for car buyers. The market penetration of electric vehicle is limited by its short range. One of the solutions to increase the range is to lower the weight of the vehicle by modifying the geometry or the material composition. Nevertheless, such changes may have consequences on the EMC of the vehicle. The work of this thesis concern the study of weight reduction of the battery shield from an EMC point of view. Several methods for materials characterization are set in this document. A method which uses a TEM cell or a stripline has been designed during this thesis to measure the complex relative permittivity of an unknown dielectric material. Then, the measured properties are inserted into numerical 3D models. The numerical techniques that fit this study are the finite differences in time domain and the method of moments. The study of radiated electromagnetic field from a battery has been performed thanks to a ½ scale model in semi anechoic chamber and mode-stirred reverberation chamber according to standard setups. More complex configurations were studied taking into account the integration of the battery-pack into the vehicle.

Weight reduction of reachstacker

Jönsson, Hugo, Wallman, Jakob January 2023 (has links)
This thesis has been carried out together with Kalmar Global’s Innovation Center and covers a concept study about weight reduction of the telescopic boom of the Reachstacker DRG 450.The reason for this weight reduction is to ease Kalmar’s transition from fossil fueled to electric driven vehicles since less weight reduces energy consumption and leaves more room for batteries. The main focus of the study is to test a wide array of cross sections for the boom with the aim of weight saving. During the thesis both meshless and traditional finite element calculations are used when utilising simulation-driven design to optimise the boom. The study concludes that using a narrower octagonal cross section, improved material quality and adapting the positions of the mounts can decrease the weight by 23% with also decreasing the material cost by 13%.
