Des voix en voie. Les femmes, c(h)oeur et marges des avant-gardes étudie le dense réseau de relations établies par quelques figures féminines qui ont inspiré des projets et des recherches au sein des avant-gardes historiques dans le panorama français du début du XXe siècle. La présente étude s'intéresse à des femmes – Sonia Delaunay, Claire Goll, Marie Laurencin, Hélène d'OEttingen, Valentine de Saint-Point et Elsa Triolet – qui ont travaillé de concert avec les représentants majeurs des avant-gardes émergentes, en donnant naissance à des projets et à des collaborations à travers l'Europe. Ces femmes artistes prolifiques, qui ont en commun le multiculturalisme et le pluristylisme, sont très actives dans le panorama artistique et littéraire du début du XXe siècle. Des traces de leurs travaux peuvent se retrouver dans les correspondances, les manuscrits, les mémoires et d'autres documents, édités et inédits, qui constituent le corpus de la thèse. La documentation ici présentée est un témoignage de la capacités des auteures à mettre en place des stratégies de communication pour une reconnaissance méritée de leur production sur la scène nationale et internationale. Le travail présente trois parties, chacune décrivant, expliquant et analysant la matière, dans le but de retracer les parcours – les voies – de ces quelques créatrices, pour en faire enfin ressortir les voix. Les annexes comprennent des documents originaux et une chronologie qui liste les travaux examinés, avec ceux des principaux chefs-de-file des avant-gardes. / Voices on the way. Women, heart / choir and fringe of the avant-garde explores the thick network of relations established by some female characters who have inspired projects and researches within the historical avant-garde in the French panorama of the early twentieth century. This study examines women – Sonia Delaunay, Claire Goll, Marie Laurencin, Hélène d'OEttingen, Valentine de Saint-Point and Elsa Triolet – who have worked closely with the main leaders of the emerging avant-garde movement, giving rise to projects and cooperations across Europe. These fecund female artists, who share multiculturalism and multilingual abilities, are the most active in the literary-artistic landscape of the early twentieth century. Traces of their works can be found in correspondence, excerpts, memoirs and other documents, both published and unpublished, that create the corpus of the thesis. The documentation presented here is a valid testimony to the authors' ability to put in place communicative strategies for an adequate recognition of their work into the national and international scene. The work is subdivided in three parts, each describing, explaining and dissecting the subject, in order to retrace the ways of these creators, to hear their voices at last. The appendix includes original documents and a chronology listing the examined works, together with those of the main exponents of the avant-garde movement.

Previous issue date: 2017-03-27 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The present research aims to analyze the literary production by the Brazilian writer Marina Colasanti, having selected four short stories published in the book Doze reis e a moça no labirinto do vento (2006), by the same author. We observed along our study that women`s literary production has been put aside along centuries in terms of canon formation, a review still necessary to be made. The male author has been taken as the pattern of the writing process, what reinforced cultural patriarchal values. This has been changing recently but is still so in many ways. Thus, our proposal connects us to several other emancipatory movements of society and, in terms of literature, to those which work in order to recognizes writing by women, being supported by gender studies as well as by literary criticism in general. In fact, gender is our central category of analysis along the study, in order to verify how marriage is represented in the short stories selected. We are interested in focusing the role women take inside the marriage institution, problematizing its fixity. Besides this gender approach in general terms, we decided to analyze these narratives as ways of making young students read and analyze in more empowering ways the gender roles offered to them (in books and in society). Our methodology is organized through the reading of the bibliographical material on gender and literary criticism, while constructing a questioning discourse on assumed gender roles at schools, believing the short stories can be read in more productive ways. Such a reading might help break with excluding gender concepts, while questioning the naturalized role frequently attached to women in common short stories for the young public. / Esta pesquisa tem como foco a produção literária da escritora brasileira contemporânea Marina Colasanti, sendo o corpus de análise composto por quatro contos da coletânea Doze reis e a moça no labirinto do vento (2006). Apontamos em nossa pesquisa que a produção literária de autoria feminina foi, ao longo do tempo, preterida devido à tradição literária ter tomado o autor homem como padrão, reforçando uma cultura de cunho patriarcal. Assim, nossa proposta se une aos movimentos emancipatórios e de reconhecimento da produção de mulheres no contexto nacional, ligadas aos estudos de gênero dentro do campo literário. Escolhemos, assim, o gênero como categoria de análise para suscitar discussões inerentes às narrativas, lendo-as apoiadas na crítica feminista, nosso marco teórico primordial. Nos interessa verificar como se dá a formação e a consolidação da instituição casamento nos contos selecionados de Colasanti, enfocando o papel ali assumido (ou problematizado) pela mulher. Além desse aspecto de gênero, nos interessa sobremaneira nos contos as possibilidades narrativas que oferecem para leitores jovens – juvenis e infantis – como uma ferramenta possível de discussão das relações de gênero, mais especificamente entre marido e mulher, pai e mãe. Nossa metodologia de pesquisa se dá através da revisão de teorias relativas ao gênero, à escrita de mulheres e às formas de inserção dessas temáticas no mundo escolar e de ensino, buscando colaborar com a quebra de paradigmas patriarcais. Previous issue date: 2009-06-26 / This work presents an analysis of the elements that compose the processes of
election of members to the Academia Maranhense de Letras - AML, interrogating
about which reasons would explain the women's absence in that institution. It takes
place a ransom of the representations elaborated for critical literary and for some
groups of writers, about the producing of art in western societies, to observe the
destined prominence the some writers. With the intention of to observe which
elements turned eight women, until the present moment, capable to be chosen for
AML, it was analyzed cuttings of life histories collected with some of those writers,
and the path of some of them was reconstituted starting from registration in books
and newspapers. It is observed that the election process for AML doesn't consider,
exclusively, candidates' literary production that intend to compose your group of
members. Besides, factors of several inclusions corroborate for the writers'
recognition. The small number of women writers is justified for the, still, small
participation of women in prominence places in the sections political, juridical,
religious, among other, which comes as great importance. / Este trabalho apresenta uma análise dos elementos que compõem os processos de
eleição de membros da Academia Maranhense de Letras AML, interrogando sobre
quais razões explicariam a ausência de mulheres nessa instituição. Para tanto,
realiza-se um resgate das representações elaboradas por críticos literários e por
alguns grupos de escritores, sobre o produtor de arte em sociedades ocidentais,
para observar o destaque destinado a alguns escritores. Com o intuito de observar
quais elementos tornaram as oito mulheres, até o presente momento, aptas a serem
eleitas para a AML, analisou-se recortes de histórias de vida coletadas junto a
algumas dessas escritoras e reconstituiu-se a trajetória de algumas delas a partir de
registro em livros e jornais. Observa-se que o processo de eleição para a AML não
considera exclusivamente a produção literária dos candidatos que pretendem
compor seu quadro de membros. Além disso, fatores de diversas abrangências
corroboram para o reconhecimento de escritores e escritoras. O pequeno número de
escritoras justifica-se pela, ainda, pequena participação de mulheres maranhenses
em locais de destaque nos setores políticos, jurídicos, religiosos, entre outros, a qual
apresenta-se como de grande importância.

in English The aim of this thesis is to interpret and categorize the lesser known novel Thaddeus of Warsaw by the Scottish author Jane Porter. The novel is characterised by the use of several genre conventions - most importantly those commonly found in the conservative anti-jacobin novel or national tale, historical novel and novel of sensibility. Porter's novel is interpreted from all three perspectives and also compared to other relevant novels from roughly the same period: Self- Control by Mary Brunton, The Old English Baron by Clary Reeve and The Wild Irish Girl by Lady Morgan. The comparison aims at the contextualization of Thaddeus of Warsaw and the observation of similarities and differences in the approach to certain themes or motives. The most important motives is that of a trial that shows the character of the protagonist in action, continuity, universality and even a certain parabolic nature of history, an emphasis on virtue and the use of sentimental conventions to portray the emotions of characters. This analysis is preceded by an interpretation of two authorial prefaces. The new one (from 1831) claims that the work it comments on is a historical novel published even before Sir Walter Scott's Waverley, usually considered the first historical novel. Cette thèse étudie des œuvres littéraires arabo-américaines contemporaines écrites par des femmes, plus spécifiquement les écrits d’Evelyn Shakir tels que Bint Arab, ainsi que plusieurs autres romans dont Arabian Jazz et Crescent de Diana Abu Jaber, The Inheritance of Exile de Susan Muaddi Darraj, The Night Counter d’Alia Yunis, et Once in a Promised Land de Laila Halaby. Elle montre comment ces œuvres construisent des univers où peuvent être interrogées les notions d’identité, de culture, d’ethnicité, et de genre. Les conflits quotidiens autour de l’identité sont traités en se fondant à la fois sur les œuvres critiques des femmes arabo-américaines et sur les études psycho-sociales du biculturalisme. De plus, ce travail met l’accent sur la formation de solidarités entre les femmes de couleur, en élargissant le concept de « conscience des zones frontalières » d’Anzaldua pour inclure les œuvres des écrivaines arabo-américaines. Ce travail montre ainsi la façon dont les productions littéraires peuvent créer de nouveaux espaces pour comprendre les problèmes sociaux, politiques, culturels, ou ethniques. / This dissertation analyses contemporary Arab-American literary productions by female writers, specifically, Shakir’s collection of memoirs Bint Arab and her two short stories “Oh Lebanon” and “Name Calling,” as well as a selection of novels, Abu Jaber’s Arabian Jazz and Crescent, Darraj’s The Inheritance of Exile, Alia Yunis’s The Night Counter, and Laila Halaby’s Once in a Promised Land. It shows how these works construct a space which enables them to investigate questions of identity, culture, ethnicity and gender. Identity conflicts around everyday matters like physical appearance, color, dress codes, veiling, chastity, and marriage are addressed by drawing upon critical works by Arab-American female writers and psycho-social studies on biculturalism. Moreover, this work emphasizes coalition-building with women of color by extending Anzaldua’s concept of the “consciousness of the borderlands” to encompass works by Arab-American female writers. Theories by post-colonial thinkers, particularly Said’s studies on Orientalism, also contribute to the dissertation’s questioning of the Oriental model of womanhood. Finally, this dissertation envisages critical works that study storytelling and its role in creating a surrogate home for “exilic” identities, with special emphasis on the Scheherazadian narrative. This project views literary productions as an appropriate way to investigate social, political, cultural and ethnic issues. It shows how writings by Arab-American women contribute to exploring inner identity conflicts, how they connect with other minority groups, and how they create a new sense of home.

Figures in fine print and Hindustani hopes and fears : identity and expectations in the poetry of Kamala DasJames, Ann Juli 06 February 2011 (has links)
Kamala Das is one of the best-known contemporary Indian women writers, albeit largely for the controversy that her candid, confessional writing has sparked in the relatively traditional context of Indian academia. Since the publication of her first collection of poetry, Summer in Calcutta (1965), Das has been considered an important voice of her generation. Her provocative poems are known for their unflinchingly honest explorations of the self and female sexuality, urban life, and women’s roles in traditional Indian society. Critics have expressed a range of opinions on her work: some laud her boldness, compelling sincerity and striking originality, while others dismiss her work as sensationalist, limited in scope and unsophisticated. In this dissertation, issues of selfhood represented in the poetry of Kamala Das will be analysed with regard to various aspects of her identity, such as those of a housewife, a lover, an Indian, a female writer, and a confessional poet. Selected theories on identity formation posited by Erik Erikson and Norman Holland will be explored, as will relevant hypotheses on female identity by Nancy Chodorow and Judith Gardiner. I propose that selected aspects of these theories shed light on the themes, tones and subject matter of Das’s verse. Almost all of her poems are personal and are fuelled by an intense need for emotional fulfilment. I suggest that the poet’s search for love is central to her identity and I aim to show how this (largely unsuccessful) quest, as reflected in Das’ poems, stems from various expectations by and on her. The recurring theme of expectations and the resulting tones of despair (the ‘hopes and fears’) in her work will be traced and analysed. This research is valuable in that there has been little exploration into identity and expectations in Das’ work and there is almost no research on her emanating from Africa. Through close textual analysis I also aim to highlight how useful insights into identity formation and female writing can enable a more in-depth understanding of Das’s poetry. Both female identity and women’s writing are increasingly significant fields in academia today, and there has been a rise in autobiographical writing in recent years; thus this research will contribute to debates about these issues in contemporary poetry. A portfolio of my own creative writing will accompany the essay. Like Kamala Das, I am also a Malayalee woman (from the province of Kerala in India) and I identify with some of her concerns with regard to the roles of women. Towards a Critical History of The Writers' Union of Canada, 1972 - 1992Ramlo, Erin January 2021 (has links)
The Writers’ Union of Canada was founded in November of 1973 “to unite Canadian writers for the advancement of their common interests.” Drawing on extensive archival collections – from both the Writers’ Union and its member authors – this dissertation offers the first critical history of the organization and its work, from pre-founding to the early 1990s, arguing that the Writers’ Union has fundamentally influenced Canadian literature, as an industry, as a community, and as a field of study. I begin by tracing the contextual history of the organization’s founding, interrogating how union organizing, celebrity, and friendship underpin the organization’s work. Chapter One discusses the Writers’ Union’s programs, reforms, and interventions aimed at ‘fostering’ writing in Canada as I argue that the Union was instrumental in building a fiscal-cultural futurity for CanLit. In Chapter Two, I consider the role that women played in this important work, as I highlight the labour of female Union members and the all-female administrative staff, who maintained and supported the organization’s work through its first twenty years. In Chapter Three I draw attention to the stories of, perspectives of, and experiences of BIPOC authors in relation to the Writers’ Union. While the Writers’ Union’s involvement in race relations is often positioned as having ‘begun’ with the Writing Thru Race conference in 1994, this chapter uses the archives to reveal a much longer trajectory of racialized conflict within and around the organization, providing important context for the very controversial and public battles about appropriation and race that would explode in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Mi disertación se centra en la literatura fantástica latinoamericana escrita por mujeres en el siglo XIX y principios del XX. En ella examino los cuentos y novelas de tres escritoras latinoamericanas del Cono Sur: los cuentos “El guante negro” (1852), “El lucero del manantial (Episodio de la dictadura de Don Juan Manuel Rosas)” (1860), y “La novia del muerto (A mi querido amigo Vicente G. Quesada)” (1861), de la argentina Juana Manuela Gorriti (1818-92); la novela La última niebla (1934), de la chilena María Luisa Bombal (1910-80); y la novela La mujer desnuda (1950), de la uruguaya Armonía Somers (1914-94).Sostengo que los efectos sobrenaturales de estos relatos confrontan no solo la idea de nación y género sino también la de tiempo como una categoría política y arbitraria. También destaco cómo las protagonistas de estas historias muestran la posición conflictiva de la figura de la mujer escritora en el contexto social en el que fueron escritas. En tal sentido, sostengo que las regulaciones sexuales y políticas son cuestionadas por sus autoras a través de lo fantástico.
Mi enfoque teórico y metodológico agrupa distintas perspectivas, incluyendo teorías del género fantástico, teoría feminista y teoría queer. Apoyándome tanto en las discusiones recientes en torno a las temporalidades queer, así como en las estrategias narrativas típicas de la literatura fantástica que usan estas historias, argumento que los tropos y motivos fantásticos −como fantasmas, dobles y mundos distópicos, entre otros elementos− funcionan como dispositivos que problematizan elementos relacionados con el género, como la división sexual del trabajo, la institucionalización de la familia, la imposición del trabajo reproductivo y la exclusión de la mujer de la esfera pública.
Finalmente, mi disertación no solo busca revisar el canon de la literatura fantástica, que sigue estando dominado por un canon eminentemente masculino, sino que también desafía la visión actual de lo fantástico como literatura escapista, argumentando en cambio que este modo narrativo siempre incluye ansiedades sociales y políticas, sea para apoyar o cambiar el statu quo, y un marco ideológico que no puede ser eludido. Por último, mi tesis destaca la importancia de incluir una perspectiva latinoamericana en los debates actuales sobre literatura fantástica y de género, así como en las discusiones recientes en torno a las temporalidades queer. / Spanish
