Teixeira de Pascoaes revisitado: um ensaio sobre literatura e ausência / Teixeira de Pascoaes Revisited: an essay on literature and absence

Roberta Almeida Prado de Figueiredo Ferraz 11 October 2016 (has links)
Teixeira de Pascoaes body of work, when observed as a whole, evokes a romantic conception of novels, as the absolute text, and suggests to readers a romance da saudade, for the author, saudade being absences potential to validate existence. In this regard, Pascoaes is connected to bigger questions in early Romanticism: the juxtaposition of the subject to the landscape as art close to nature; the dilution of the self when in written form; the dream as access to reality; the foundation of the world in poetry; and irony as an ambiguity device. These aesthetic issues and themes are revisited under his poética da saudade, a yearning for the absent love, present throughout his work, resulting in potent intratextuality. Saudade is, above all, the way to understand a person through the signs left by his or her absence. Literature offers the environment for the encounter of subject and phantasmagoria. These principles grant pascoesian texts a metalinguistic dimension, as talking about phantoms also refers to images as a support for the written text. It is therefore here, an essay about literature and absence, encompassing Pascoaes body of work, featuring its complexity beyond simplistic ideological (saudosista) or anachronic (counter positioning to Fernando Pessoas modernity) understandings. This thesis aims to examine the totality of Pascoaes oeuvre, highlighting its poetic density, the paradoxical characteristic of existence described by him, and stressing the complex positioning of the author in the aesthetic debate at the time when the world discovered electricity, psychoanalysis, and the nocturnal mystery of individuals was questioned incisively, outside religious spheres, in pure aesthetic experiment.

The Impact of College Leaves of Absence on Labor Market Outcomes: Evidence from South Korean College Students

Kim, Ji hye January 2016 (has links)
Human capital has become a key driver of individual employment and economic growth over the past few decades. The Republic of Korea in particular has experienced rapid and sustained economic success due to a marked rise in educated human capital over the past thirty years, but this status has begun to falter as glaring inefficiencies in the South Korean educational system, particularly concerning higher education, have emerged. The high-performing academic curricula at Korea’s higher education institutions fail to reflect the needs of industries, and the subsequent high unemployment rate among university graduates has led to a high incidence of voluntary college leaves of absence (LOAs) aimed at acquiring and reinforcing those skills required by the labor market, suggesting that Korea’s educational progress and the labor market are not well matched. This dissertation is the first study aimed at understanding this voluntary break in college schooling while controlling for self-selection bias using propensity score matching (PSM) estimates. This study contributes to exploring the causal effect of a college LOA on labor market outcomes and heterogeneous effects across family background based on the 2011 Graduates Occupational Mobility Survey (GOMS), the results of which may be useful for policymakers. Distinguishing between engaging in a college LOA to gain skills or experience and engaging in an LOA because of financial difficulties, I find significant positive effects of a college leave of absence on earnings and employment status for college LOAs motivated by employment preparation for both males and females. Considering that there is high financial dependence on parents in South Korea, both for funding one’s education and for covering the monetary costs of taking a college LOA, there is a strong link between family socioeconomic status (SES) and access to extra career-related activities through a college LOA. Families with low SES do not have the same opportunities to participate in college LOAs for employment preparation as do high SES students. Although low SES students have higher heterogeneous effects of a college LOA to prepare for employment, students with low parental income have limited returns to education. The close relationship between parental wealth and the ability to invest in experience and on-the-job training through an LOA may play a significant role in achieving successful labor market outcomes. This means that college LOAs can become a new channel for intergenerational transmission of earnings and even social inequality. The impact of a college LOA due to financial difficulties on monthly income is not statistically significant for both males and females. However, statistically significant negative effect for males are found after controlling for work experience while enrolled in college, implying that student employment during college for male students who take an LOA for financial reasons has a significantly negative effect on wages in the labor market. This could be because the types of jobs that students might work may not be oriented toward labor market preparation and may even impede the development of increased human capital or have negative signaling properties, thus inducing negative labor market payoffs after graduation. Interestingly, even LOAs due to financial difficulties have a positive impact on female employment status. Given that South Korea has high barriers to labor market participation for women in South Korea, a college LOA contributes to a reduction in temporary female workers, indicating that more women are participating in the labor market with stable employment status.

Aesthetics of absence: an exploration of the apocalypse of the Anthropocene

Elliott, Russell 02 January 2018 (has links)
The tension inherent in the Anthropocene is the tension between what is rendered (in)visible, and what attempts to be made visible. It is, in this sense, a conflict of ontology and aesthetics: ghosts flutter around us, in and out of our dimension (Bourriaud, 2016; Morton, 2013), and, as Poe would say, “man” is being driven mad by the heartbeats heard through the floorboards. This study addresses two main ideas: (a) that it is the modern subject that is the anthropos of the Anthropocene, and (b) that we must further conceptualise claims about the ‘end of the world’ (Morton, 2013). Ultimately, however, both these claims are intimately linked: the ‘subject’ and the ‘world’ in modernity cannot be separated from each other, and are indeed part of the same process (Mbembe, 2003). Thus, the central argument herein is that the Anthropocene should be viewed as a threshold (Clark, 2016; Haraway, 2015) to an epoch (namely, modernity) rather than the start of a new one. To this end, what is at its ‘end’ or threshold then, is the modern subject, and the ‘world’ that it inhabited. We are faced with the utter abyss of the negative (Sinnerbrink, 2016). The sixth extinction is imminent, and a whole host of morbid repercussions of making-world (Mbembe, 2003) are creeping towards us (Morton, 2013). Ultimately, we must reckon with absence. But what does this mean? How are we to perceive and think about this lack? This study aims to address this problem, arguing that we now face the presence of absence, rather than the absence of presence. Indeed, we must seek a new aesthetics of absence. / Graduate

O fantasma da palavra: a poÃtica da ausÃncia em A menina morta, de CornÃlio Penna / The Phantom of the Word: the Poetics of Absence in A menina morta (The Dead Girl), by CornÃlio Penna

Douglas Carlos de Paula Moreira 21 June 2016 (has links)
This work intends to study the voids, the gaps and the textual absences in the novel A menina morta [The dead girl] (1954), written by CornÃlio Penna. In this novel, we have found a structured narrative around the absence (starting with the absence of the very girl who gives title to the work), inviting the reader to look endlessly for an empty place that, paradoxically, leaves its mark in emotional repression form and social malaise. The reader look wants to see more, however is the least that the author offers, inscribing his fiction under the sign of negativity and emptying. We affirm that, in this novel, unlike his initial works, CornÃlio Penna overcomes the fantastic strand, moving the transcendent area "ghosts" for the inexorable encounter with real.We have sought the theoretical foundation of this thesis in the literary theory, philosophy and psychoanalysis speeches, through the dialogue with the works of Sigmund Freud, Jacques Lacan, Maurice Blanchot, Giorgio Agamben, Walter Benjamin and Georges Didi-Huberman. Through these thinkers, we have tried to show the dialectic game which CornÃlio Penna articulates among subjectivity and objectivity, through which the reality is implicated in the subjectivation modes. In A menina morta, therefore, the reality of patriarchy and slavery becomes more frightening than ghosts that inhabit the popular imagination. The territory chosen by CornÃlio Penna to describe his historical drama makes from the myth the labyrinth of history, up against the events are stoned in a stagnant zone in which almost nothing happens, protruding the mourning and the melancholy. The characters connection is marked by the lack of communication, due to fear of saying and the resentment of shut up. So, to the characters remain the refuge of unsaid (up against the bans strength) and the dramatization of words and gestures. The ghost of the word is not â as you might guess â the silence; the ghost of the word is the lack of the name, is this nonspecific place where the thinking does not reach and the reason seems to fall apart. In short, it is about an opening to an inaccessible place, a tragic aporia, formed by a time of expecting and a place of passage.

Collective dynamics of basal ganglia-thalamo-cortical loops and their roles in functions and dysfunctions / Interactions entre les boucles de rétroaction et inhibition feedforward striatale dans la dynamique normale et pathologique du réseau basalo-thalamo-corticale

Arakaki, Takafumi 21 March 2016 (has links)
The Basal Ganglia (BG) are thought to be involved primarily in motor but also in non-motor functions. Unsurprisingly, the BG are shown to be involved in motor dysfunctions such as Parkinson's disease or dystonia. More recent studies suggest the key role of the BG in "non-motor" diseases such as absence epilepsy which is a generalized non-convulsive epilepsy. In these diseases, symptoms accompany various oscillatory patterns of neural activity often synchronized across the BG, cortex and other brain areas. How can the BG support these different kinds of oscillatory patterns?Recent experiments have highlighted the key role of the BG in absence seizures and question the traditional view in which thalamocortical circuits underlie absence seizures. We propose a novel theory according to which the feedbacks of cortical activity through BG make this network bistable and drive the oscillatory patterns of activity occurring during the seizures. Our theory is compatible with virtually all known experimental results and it predicts that well-timed transient excitatory inputs to the cortex advance the termination of absence seizures. We report preliminary experimental results consistent with this prediction.Multiple oscillatory frequencies are observed in Parkinsonian BG such as the frequencies of the limb tremor and the beta oscillations. We show that our model can generate oscillations with multiple timescales which resemble Parkinsonian oscillations. Our theory can model the oscillations in Parkinson's disease and absence epilepsy in a unified framework and points to two scenarios to explain multiple frequencies of pathological and functional oscillations.

Father Absence and Early Family Composition as a Predictor of Menarcheal Onset: Psychosocial and Familial Factors That are Associated with Pubertal Timing.

Healey, Amanda Christel 06 May 2006 (has links)
Father absence and the introduction of a stepfather before menarche have been shown to contribute to the early onset of menarche. The present study analyzes the effects of father absence situations that tend to result on the onset of menarche. Presence of a related male in a father-absent homes is also considered as a protective factor for menarcheal onset. Participants consisted of 342 female students enrolled in undergraduate work at a southeastern university. The mean age of participants was 20.7 years. Participants completed a survey consisting of 12 questions pertaining to their family environment before menarche. Participants were asked to give their age at first menarche in years and months. Results indicted a significant difference in menarcheal age between those from homes where both biological parents were present and those where the biological father was absent before menarche. No other significant results were found. Implications for future research discussed.

Relating Teacher Attendance to Student English Language Arts and Math Achievement

Kubilus, Daryl 01 January 2018 (has links)
On average, teachers in the United States are absent for 9.6 days of student instruction per school year, while in this study's rural Northeast Ohio school district, teachers averaged 16.2 absences in the 2015-16 school year. Teacher absence is a concern because the classroom teacher is often considered the most crucial school-related influence on student achievement. Guided by Bowlby's attachment theory, the purpose of this study was to examine the possible predictive relationships between teacher absences for sick/personal and professional leave as well as other teacher-related variables, including teaching experience, teacher education level, and teacher evaluation results, with the outcome variables of student achievement in 4th through 8th grade English language arts and math. In this quantitative correlational study, data from 36 4th through 8th grade English language arts and math teachers were examined using simple and multiple linear regression models. Results indicated that none of the 5 teacher-related variables were significantly predictive of student achievement. Despite these non-significant results, the district's Board of Education expressed concerns about the public's perception of the district's teacher attendance rate. To address the Board's concern, a 3-day professional development program was created for the Board, administrators, and teachers to collaborate and recommend strategies to increase teacher attendance. The knowledge gained from implementing this project will promote positive social change by offering this and other school districts a variety of options to support the consistent attendance of teachers, which may, in turn, enhance student-teacher relationships, student-teacher engagement, and potentially student achievement over time.
