Readability of waiver of liability forms used in collegiate intramural and recreational sports programsWhite, Benjamin J. 28 May 2002 (has links)
Properly written waiver of liability forms can be an effective tool in
decreasing injury liability of intramural and recreational sports programs. In order
for a waiver to be effective, (i.e., held up in court), participants must not only read
and sign the waiver, but they must understand it as well. Readability, the ease of
which text can be read and understood, is an important part of a well-written
waiver.
Waiver of liability forms should be written at a reading level consistent with
that of the intended audience. On average, students read three grade levels below
the last grade they completed in school. The highest grade level at which waiver of
liability forms written for use in college settings should be the 9th grade. The main
goal of this study was to assess the reading level of intramural and recreational
sport waiver of liability forms, and compare them to the 9th grade level.
Nine NIRSA member schools and nine non-NIRSA member schools from
each of the six NIRSA regions were randomly selected for inclusion in this study.
Following multiple mailings, the forms received were scanned into a computer, and
readability was assessed using the Readability Calculation software (Micro Power
& Light, Dallas, TX) for McIntosh. A one-sample t-test was performed to compare
the forms to the 9th grade reading level. Forms were written significantly higher
than the 9th grade level (t[26]=14.53, p<.0001). An analysis of variance was
performed to assess possible moderating variables (e.g., NIRSA membership status
and involvement of a risk management team in writing the waiver). No significant
differences were found. Font size was also measured, and forms were found to have
been written at a significantly higher level then the recommended 12 point font
(t[28]=-2.88, p<.01). This study brings into questions the efficacy of waiver of
liability forms used in many collegiate/university intramural and recreational sports

People have complex thoughts, and they often express their thoughts with complex sentences using natural languages. This complexity may facilitate efficient communications among the audience with the same knowledge base. But on the other hand, for a different or new audience this composition becomes cumbersome to understand and analyze. Analysis of such compositions using syntactic or semantic measures is a challenging job and defines the base step for natural language processing.
In this dissertation I explore and propose a number of new techniques to analyze and visualize the syntactic and semantic patterns of unstructured English texts.
The syntactic analysis is done through a proposed visualization technique which categorizes and compares different English compositions based on their different reading complexity metrics. For the semantic analysis I use Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) to analyze the hidden patterns in complex compositions. I have used this technique to analyze comments from a social visualization web site for detecting the irrelevant ones (e.g., spam). The patterns of collaborations are also studied through statistical analysis.
Word sense disambiguation is used to figure out the correct sense of a word in a sentence or composition. Using textual similarity measure, based on the different word similarity measures and word sense disambiguation on collaborative text snippets from social collaborative environment, reveals a direction to untie the knots of complex hidden patterns of collaboration.

El estudio examinó la posible influencia del lenguaje y lugar de origen de un lector en la comprensión de mensajes de comunicación en salud y en la formación de actitud e intención hacia la realización de una conducta preventiva. Un instrumento de medición con escala de comprensión de lectura, actitud e intención fue suministrado a un grupo de puertorriqueños y dominicanos N=40) residentes en San Juan, Puerto Rico. La escala de comprensión tenía dos textos en diversos niveles de dificultad (bastante fácil y medio) de acuerdo con la Fórmula de Legibilidad para el idioma español de Francisco Szigriszt Pazos. Se encontró que no hubo diferencia estadísticamente significativa (p>.05) entre la muestra en el nivel de dificultad bastante fácil, no obstante en el nivel de dificultad medio sí hubo diferencia estadísticamente significativa (p<.05). Los análisis reflejaron que la comprensión y actitud en conjunto no predicen de manera significativa el grado de intención para la adopción de una conducta preventiva de salud. / This study examines the possible influence of a reader's place of origin on the comprehension of health communication messages and on the formation of attitudes and intentions of preventive behavior. A measurement instrument with a reading comprehension, attitude and intention scale was administered to a group of individuals of Puerto Rican and Dominican origin (N=40) living in San Juan, Puerto Rico.The reading comprehension scale used two texts with different levels of difficulty (relatively easy and intermediate) in accordance with the Readability Formula for Spanish of Francisco Szigriszt Pazos. There was no statistically significant difference (p>.05) among the samplefor the relatively easy level of the reading test; however, for the intermediate level, there was a statistically significant difference (p<.05). Analyses showed that comprehension and attitude together do not significantly predict the degree of intention to adopt healthy preventive behavior.

Literacy and Hazard Communication Comprehension of Employees Presenting to an Occupational Health ClinicBouchard, Christine 01 January 2011 (has links)
More than 100 million American workers, 7 million workplaces, and 945,000 hazardous chemical products are covered under the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS), regulated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. There were a total of 1,183,500 recordable non-fatal illnesses and injuries in private industry workplaces in 2006 resulting in days away from work. Of these, 19,480 were due to chemicals and chemical products. In addition, there were a total of 5,703 work-related fatalities in 2006. In 191 of these, chemicals and chemical products were listed as the primary source of injury and as the secondary source of injury in 104 cases. The economic impact of both fatal and non-fatal occupational injuries amounted to $164.7 billion in 2006.
OSHA established the HCS in order to ensure that workers are informed of the hazardous chemicals with which they work, yet OSHA admits that many adults may have difficulty reading material that communicates hazards. Violations of OSHA's HCS were the third most cited violation in 2007. Since only 12 percent of the adults surveyed in the United States demonstrated Proficient health literacy, the state of affairs poses a serious problem for hazard communication, which nurses and nurse practitioners are often responsible for conveying. Health tasks that require Proficient health literacy include "drawing abstract inferences, comparing or contrasting multiple pieces of information within complex texts or documents, or applying abstract or complicated information from texts or documents".
Donabedian's Structure-Process-Outcome framework served as the conceptual basis for this study. Twelve research studies (nine journal articles and three doctoral dissertations) published between 1993 and 2003 were reviewed. None of these studies measured the participants' literacy level. The purpose of this single administration, cross-sectional study was to examine literacy levels as a hypothesized predictor of test scores of employees presenting to the Lakeside Occupational Medical Center, Downtown Clinic, for a physical examination, immunization, drug screening, or follow-up appointment. MSDS test scores served as the dependent variable and were measured by an investigator-made test consisting of seven passages, taken from seven separate MSDSs for sodium hypochlorite, each from a different manufacturer. Sodium hypochlorite is commonly utilized in numerous industries including the janitorial, pulp, paper, textile, dairy, and water-cooling industries and is known to cause work-related health effects such as asthma and irritation of the eyes and throat.
Each passage was followed by five multiple choice questions. Literacy levels were measured utilizing the Short Test of Functional Health Literacy in Adults (STOFHLA). The readability level of the written material was measured utilizing the Simplified Measure of Gobbledygook (SMOG) and the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level (FKGL). The characteristics of age, highest grade level completed, native language, and job category were measured by a demographic sheet.
The results indicate that there was a significant positive correlation between the total STOFHLA scores and the total scores on the MSDS test. Therefore, hypothesis number 1 was supported. Findings on the readability level of the examples of the MSDSs to the participant's overall MSDS score were inconclusive. However, the format of the MSDS, specifically the number of lines/sentence and the number of words that are 3 syllables or more, may influence comprehension. Therefore, written hazard communication material should be written in short sentences and use words less than 3 syllables. This way the likelihood of the material being understood by the worker will be increased. Further research aimed at understanding exactly how reading grade level and sentence structure impacts comprehension of hazardous materials information is needed.

Bakgrund och problem: Företag ägnar idag betydande utrymme i sina årsredovisningar till berättande information som ska ge investeraren en helhetsbild av företaget och dess verksamhet, vilket ska öka användbarheten vid beslutsfattande. Investerare värderar den kontextuella informationen högt men anser samtidigt att den saknar aktualitet och objektivitet. Ett problem med den berättande informationen är att företagen kan framställa sina prestationer och framtidsutsikter på ett opportunistiskt sätt. Med utgångspunkt i att framvagnen består av berättande information och är en viktig del av företags årsredovisning är det av vikt att undersöka framvagnen. Läsbarheten av den berättande informationen har visats påverka icke-professionella investerare i en bedömnings- och beslutssituation, varför det är intressant att undersöka hur framvagnens läsbarhet påverkar investeringsbeslutet. Syfte: Syftet är att förstå hur framvagnen används som kommunikationskanal och förklara hur interaktionen mellan framvagnens läsbarhet och nivån på de finansiella nyheterna, positiva respektive negativa, påverkar icke-professionella investerares investeringsbeslut. Metod: Studien utgår från både en kvalitativ och en kvantitativ ansats. För att förstå hur framvagnen används som kommunikationskanal har vi genomfört semistrukturerade intervjuer, med en projektledare för årsredovisningen och två användare av framvagnen för få att deras syn på sambandet mellan framvagnen och de resterande delarna av årsredovisningen samt vikten av läsbarheten av och tilliten till framvagnen. Vi genomförde ett experiment på tredjeårsstudenter på civilekonomprogrammet vid Linköpings universitet där vi undersökte hur interaktionen mellan framvagnens läsbarhet och nivån på de finansiella nyheterna, positiva respektive negativa, påverkar icke-professionella investerares investeringsbeslut. Slutsats: Vi fann att framvagnen används för att kommunicera en berättelse om företaget men även för att sätta de finansiella rapporterna i ett tydligare sammanhang, vilket ska ge investeraren en känsla för varför den ska investera i företaget. En högre läsbarhet av framvagnen underlättar kommunikationen mellan företaget och dess investerare då samtliga investerare förstår informationen samtidigt som det undermedvetet ökar tilliten till informationen. Experimentet indikerade att läsbarheten i kombination med nivån på de finansiella nyheterna har en viss påverkan på icke-professionella investerares sannolikhet att investera och tillit till informationen. En framvagn med en högre läsbarhet som innehåller positiva finansiella nyheter torde öka icke-professionella investerares sannolikhet att investera i företaget. Har framvagnen däremot en lägre läsbarhet har de icke-professionella investerarna en större tillit till de negativa finansiella nyheterna. / Background & Problem: Today, companies devote significant space in their annual reports to narrative information, which provide investors with a complete picture of the company and its operations. The narrative information enhances the documents’ decision usefulness. Investors consider the contextual information valuable even though it is lacking timeliness and objectivity. One problem with the narrative information is that companies can present their achievements and prospect in a favourable way. Because the-state-of-the-company report consists of narrative information and is a significant part of the annual report it is of importance to explore. The readability of the narrative information has been shown to influence non-professional investors’ investment decision, therefore it is of interest to explore how the readability of the-state-of-the-company report influences the investment decision. Aim: The aim is to understand how the-state-of-the-company report is used as a communication channel and to explain how the interaction between the readability of the state-of-the-company report and the level of financial news, positive or negative, influence investors’ decisions. Method: The study is based on both a qualitative and a quantitative method. We conducted semi-structured interviews to understand how the-state-of-the-company report is used as communication channel. Interviews were conducted with a project manager for the annual report and two users of the state-of-the-company report. The purpose with the interviews were to get their view of the relationship between the state-of-the-company report and the financial reporting part of the annual report, as well as the importance of the readability of and reliance on the state-of-the-company report. We have conducted an experiment on third grade business students at Linköping University to explain how the interaction between the readability of the state-of-the-company report and the level of financial news, positive or negative, influence non-professional investors’ investment decisions. Conclusion: We found that the state-of-the-company report is used to communicate a story about the company, but also to contextualize the numbers, which gives the investor a sense of why they should invest in the company. A higher readability of the-state-of-the-company report enhances the communication between the company and its investors, since all investors can comprehend the information at the same time as it subconsciously increases their reliance on the information. The experiment indicated that the readability, in combination with the level of financial news (positive or negative), has some influence on non-professional investors’ likelihood to invest and their reliance on the information. A state-of-the-company report with a higher readability consisting positive financial new should increase non-professional investors’ likelihood to invest. When the state-of-the-company report has higher readability, non-professional investors have a greater reliance on the positive financial news. If the state-of-the-company report instead has lower readability, non-professional investors have a greater reliance on the negative financial news. The readability has not the same influence on professional investors because they have a more critical perspective on the state-of-the-company report.

Fonts and Fluency: The Effects of Typeface Familiarity, Appropriateness, and Personality on Reader JudgmentsWang, Timothy Tien-Lou January 2013 (has links)
The advent of digital typography has seen the printed letter permeate many aspects of our world, due to its function as the visual manifestation of verbal language. However, few scientific researchers have paid attention to these innocuous and ubiquitous characters. Furthermore, existing typeface research has generally been divided into two strands: For nearly ninety years, communicators (writing, marketing, business, and design professionals) have made attempts to investigate how typefaces of different classes and styles might indicate different personalities to the viewer, and explored the notion of typeface appropriateness. More recently, psychologists have taken advantage of word processing software to manipulate perceptual fluency by changing the fonts of different documents, finding several interesting effects. In this study, two experiments were conducted, with the aim of acknowledging and synthesizing both lines of inquiry. In Experiment 1, a restaurant menu was printed with either an easy-to-read, fluent font or a difficult-to-read, disfluent font. It was expected that reading the disfluent font would influence participants’ (n = 110) choices from the menu as well as certain judgments about the dishes. However, there was only one significant effect, whereby participants who read the disfluent font expected to enjoy their chosen dessert less than those who read the fluent font. In Experiment 2, participants (n = 94) judged a person of the opposite sex using the Big Five Inventory, a measure of human personality. The target photograph was paired with a name set in one of two fonts (familiar and unfamiliar). Female participants rated the target higher on the factor of Openness when the name was printed in the novel font. The results of the current study indicate that to some extent, document designers may safely continue selecting typefaces through intuition, and do not necessarily need the supplementation of additional empirical research.

The political caesura prompted a debate about the future of German literature during which the concept of 'readability' evolved as a contested issue. It was championed in particular by the author Matthias Politycki and the publishers Uwe Wittstock and Martin Hielscher. Ever since, 'readability' has remained a benchmark for authors and critics alike in the battle for value and success. The thesis will establish a theoretical basis for 'readability' that draws on narratology, the Aristotelian concept of 'mimesis', classical rhetoric, and the poetics of contemporary authors who explicitly engage with 'readability'. Discussion will centre on the novel since this genre has been the focus of debate ever since the novel gained prominence with the rise of the reading middle classes in the eighteenth century. An analysis of the historical role of 'readability' will demonstrate that the debate as it manifested itself around 1990 developed out of a specifically German tradition, in which authors and critics alike viewed it as potentially in conflict with true art. The thesis will conclude with a reflection on the prospects for 'readability' in the current literary landscape in Germany.

"Det är bara att hälla in texten" : – En studie om att anpassa ett tryckt läromedel till digitalt formatAttersand, Åsa January 2018 (has links)
Abstract This study is about what happens to text and image content in a printed teaching material when adapted to a digital format. The purpose of my work is to find out if readability is changing in the new medium. The theoretical focus of the study is readability, text and image in collaboration, as well as multimodality. To find out if the digital format affects readability, i have performed two text analyzes, a readability analysis of the printed material and a comparative analysis of the digital material. I have also conducted interviews with teachers and experts about the teaching methods. A test and a participant observation were conducted with the target group where my improvement proposal was compared with the existing material. The conclusions i have come to is that there must be clear links between text and image in a digital teaching material. Color markings in body text with word explanations can interfere with the reading rhythm and too many heading levels can confuse the reader. The most important conclusion is, however, that how readable a text is depends on the audience's previous knowledge, objectives and motivation for the subject. A hard-worded factual text does necessarily need to be easier by splitting the text into short paragraphs, but it can however, make it more difficult to understand the content. / Sammanfattning Den här studien handlar om vad som händer med text och bildinnehåll i ett tryckt läromedel när det ska anpassas till ett digitalt format. Syftet med mitt arbete är att ta reda på om läsbarheten förändras i det nya mediet. Studiens teoretiska fokus ligger på: Läsbarhet, text och bild i samverkan, samt multimodalitet. För att ta reda på om det digitala formatet påverkar läsbarheten har jag utfört två textanalyser, en läsbarhetsanalys av det tryckta materialet och en komparativ analys av det digitala. Jag har även utfört intervjuer med lärare och experter inom läromedelsutgivning. En utprovning samt en deltagarobservation genomfördes med målgruppen där mitt förbättringsförslag jämfördes med det befintliga materialet. De slutsatser jag har kommit fram till är att det behöver finnas tydliga kopplingar mellan text och bild i ett digitalt läromedel. Färgmarkeringar i brödtext med ordförklaringar kan störa läsrytmen och för många rubriknivåer kan förvirra läsaren. Den viktigaste slutsatsen är dock att hur läsbar en text är beror på målgruppens förkunskaper, läsmål och motivation för ämnet. En faktatext med svåra ord behöver nödvändigtvis inte bli lättare för att man delar in texten i korta stycken, det kan snarare bli svårare att förstå innehållet.

Bakgrund Årsredovisningens berättande delar utgör numera majoriteten av årsredovisningen. De berättande delarna hjälper läsaren att tolka den finansiella informationen. Därmed är läsbarheten i de berättande delarna viktig för årsredovisningens användbarhet. Tidigare studier har kommit fram till att företag medvetet försämrar årsredovisningens läsbarhet för att dölja skadlig information och därigenom vilseleda läsaren. Syfte Studiens syfte är att förklara variation i läsbarhet mellan svenska börsnoterade företags årsredovisningar. Metod Denna kvantitativa studie tar sin utgångspunkt i ett eklektiskt och deduktivt angreppssätt där både läsbarhets- och redovisningsteorier ligger till grund för hypotesutvecklingen. Studien utgår från en tvärsnittsdesign där studiens empiriska material utgörs av sekundärdata som är hämtad från företags årsredovisningar. Variation i årsredovisningars läsbarhet analyseras med multipel linjär regression. Slutsats Studiens resultat visar att det finns ett starkt positivt samband mellan lönsamhet och läsbarhet och således har mindre lönsamma företag en lägre läsbarhet i sina årsredovisningar. Resultatet påvisar även att det förekommer svaga skillnader i årsredovisningars läsbarhet mellan olika branscher. Vidare indikerar analysen att större företag skriver längre texter och därigenom mer svårläst. / Introduction Nowdays the narrative parts are the majority of the annual report. The narrative parts help the reader to interpret the financial information. Thus, the readability is important for the usefulness of the annual report. Prior research has found that corporations strategically use the language as a tool to hide information and to obfuscate the reader. Purpose The purpose of this study is to explain variation in readability between Swedish listed corporations’ annual reports. Method This quantitative study is based on an eclectical and deductive approach where both theories of readability and accounting theories have formulated the hypotheses. A cross-sectional design has been used and the study's empirical data consist of secondary data, derived from annual reports. Variation in annual reports readability has been analysed by multiple linear regression. Conclusion The result shows that there is a strong positive correlation between profitability and readability, thus less profitable corporations have lower readability in their annual reports. The result also shows that there are weak differences in the annual reports' readability between different industries. Furthermore, the analysis indicates that larger companies write longer texts and thus more difficult.

Introdução: A comunicação na saúde pública é uma ferramenta de promoção da saúde e acesso à informação. A melhoria da comunicação entre o laboratório clínico e os usuários constitui um direito do usuário do serviço público de saúde e também apresenta potencial para a diminuição de erros de análise provenientes da fase pré-analítica e consequente melhoria da segurança do paciente. Este trabalho teve o objetivo avaliar a adequação da linguagem escrita utilizada na comunicação entre o laboratório clínico e os usuários bem como sua influência da qualidade da fase pré-analítica do processo laboratorial. Materiais e Métodos: Foram analisadas instruções de coleta (IC) da Divisão de Laboratório Clínico (DLC) do Hospital Universitário da USP (HU/USP), de setembro de 2014 a agosto de 2016. Na primeira fase, os parâmetros de linguagem e legibilidade das IC foram avaliados pelos índices Fernández-Huerta (IFH), Flesch-Szigriszt (IFS), utilizando os programas de informática TextMeter® e INFLESZ®. Os textos de IC foram traduzidos para o espanhol e utilizados para validação dos índices IFH e IFS para a língua portuguesa. Na segunda fase, as IC foram reestruturadas e os parâmetros de linguagem e legibilidade foram analisados e comparados com as IC anteriores. O perfil sócio educacional dos usuários e uma lista dos problemas relacionados obtenção de amostras de biológicas foram obtidos na DLC. Resultados: Quanto aos parâmetros de linguagem, o número de linhas por IC, de palavras proparoxítonas e polissilábicas foi similar entre as IC anteriores e novas (p>0,05). Enquanto que o número de termos técnicos e de palavras por frase foi menor, e número de orações subordinadas e coordenadas e ordem inversas das palavras foi maior nas IC novas (p<0,05). O escore do IFH (58,4 ± 8,8) foi menor que o do IFS (62,3 ± 6,8, p=0,019) para 27 IC anteriores, mas não diferiu para as 40 IC novas (p=0,162). Os escores de IFS e IFH das IC novas em português foram similares aos das traduzidas para o espanhol, o que é indicativo de que esses índices são validos para a língua portuguesa. Os índices IFH e IFS de textos didáticos usados para avaliar o grau de escolaridade foram similares para o ensino fundamental (EF) I e II, mas foram menores para os dois últimos anos do ensino médio (EM). O número de IC com índices de legibilidade correspondentes aos textos didáticos destinados ao o 3º ano do EF II (32,7%, n=10) foi menor que o número de IC novas (52,5%, n=21), mas a diferença não foi significativa (p=0,280). Os percentuais de gênero e a cor autodeclarada foram similares entre as duas fases do estudo. Entretanto menos jovens (<34 anos), mais idosos (>50 anos) e mais usuários com EF, EM e ensino superior completo foram atendidos, na segunda fase do estudo (p<0,05). Foram identificadas mais falhas de orientação na primeira fase (n=11) que na segunda (n=22) mas sem diferença significativa (p=1,000). Conclusão: Os parâmetros de linguagem e legibilidade melhoraram após a reestruturação das novas IC. A análise de legibilidade contribui para a comunicação do laboratório clinico com os usuários e pode influenciar positivamente a qualidade da fase pré-analítica do processo laboratorial. / Introduction: Communication in public health is a tool to promote health and access to information. The improvement of communication between the clinical laboratory and the users constitutes a right of the public health service user and it is presents potential for the reduction of analytical errors from the pre-analytic phase and consequent improvement of patient safety. This work aimed to evaluate the adequacy of the written language used in the communication between the clinical laboratory and the users as well as its influence on the quality of the pre-analytical phase of the laboratory process. Materials and Methods: Collection instruction leaflet (CIL) from the Clinical Laboratory Division (DLC) of the University Hospital of USP (HU/USP) were analyzed from September 2014 to August 2016. In the first phase, the language and readability parameters of the CIL were evaluated by the Fernández-Huerta indexes (IFH), Flesch-Szigriszt (IFS), using the TextMeter® and INFLESZ® software programs. CIL texts were translated into Spanish and used for validation of the IFH and IFS indexes for Portuguese language. In the second phase, the CIL were restructured and the language and readability parameters were analyzed and compared with the previous CIL. The socioeconomic profile of the users and a list of problems related to obtaining biological samples were obtained in the DLC. Results: Regarding the language parameters, the number of lines per CIL and the proparoxytone and polysyllabic words was similar between the previous and new CIL (p> 0.05). While the number of technical terms and words per sentence were smaller, and number of subordinate and coordinated sentences and inverse order of words was higher in the new CIL (p<0.05). The IFH score (58.4 ± 8.8) was lower than the IFS score (62.3 ± 6.8, p = 0.019) for 27 previous CIL, but did not differ for the 40 new CIL (p = 0.162). The IFS and IFI scores of the new CIL in Portuguese were similar to those translated into Spanish, which is indicative of the fact that these indices are valid for the Portuguese language. The IFH and IFS indexes for didactic texts used to assess the educational level were similar for elementary education (EF) I and II, but were lower for the last two years of secondary education (MS). The number of CIL with readability indexes corresponding to the didactic texts for the 3th year of EF II (32.7%, n=10) was lower than the number of new CIL (52.5%, n=21), but the difference was not significant (p=0.280). The percentages of gender and self-reported color were similar between the two phases of the study. However, young adults people (<34 years), older people (>50 years) and more users with EF, MS and complete higher education were attended in the second phase of the study (p<0.05). More guiding failures were identified in the first phase (n=11) than in the second (n=22) but no significant difference (p=1,000). Conclusion: The language and readability parameters improved after the restructuring of the new CIL. The readability analysis contributes to the communication of the clinical laboratory with the users and can positively influence the quality of the pre-analytical phase of the laboratory process.
