Kallmurad arkitektonisk platå vid Kinne-Klevas brant : En studie av kyrkogårdar under järnålder och tidig medeltid, Kinnekulle & Västergötlands slättlandskap

Lignell, Paula January 2023 (has links)
Today, despite monumental walls and solid construction, the deserted graveyard in Kinne-Kleva seems to fade away as an old Christian memory. However, if you just stop for a moment and take a closer look, rethink, and challenge your thought. You might realize that the place may have served another function than Christianity. by studying 99 burial sites in Västergötland, 9 categories such as wall constructions and cult has been revealed. With an analysis, refining categories through new research and adding them toghether, the monumental construction suddenly seems to might have had another function in the Iron Age.

Den mesolitiska-neolitiska övergången i Irland : Stabil isotopanalys till dietstudier / The Mesolithic-Neolithic Transition in Ireland : Stable Isotope Analysis as A Tool for Dietary Studies

Büch, Sam January 2024 (has links)
This bachelor thesis investigates nitrogen and carbon stable isotopes in Ireland during the Mesolithic and Neolithic. In recent years, the understanding of subsistence strategies in Northwestern Europe has improved and it has shown that the dietary stable isotope data of Neolithic Ireland is an extreme outlier in the region. The aim is to examine the manuring and canopy effect that have often been suggested to be possible contributing factors for this difference. There is no certainty whether this difference is due to diet, land use or any other cause while these effects remain uninvestigated. The effects are studied by comparing dietary isotopes with sources about land use, such as pollen and geochemical data, for four sites: Carrowkeel, Poulnabrone, Knowth and the Mound of Hostages (Duma na nGiall), which together comprise c. 80% of the Neolithic Irish stable isotope record. The manuring effect is not visible in the current stable isotope, pollen, geochemical, zoological and archaeobotanical record. The canopy effect may be reflected in that same dataset. If the canopy effect is indeed the cause of the difference between Irish and Southern British δ13C values, a detailed comparison between the pollen data close to the origin of the carbon stable isotope samples and the carbon stable isotope samples in another area, such as Southern Britain, may explain the outlier position of Ireland in North-western Europe.

Genomgång av fångstgropar i Norrland : En studie av dateringsrepresentativitet inom tidigare forskning kring fångstgroparnas kronologiska placering / Overview of trapping pits in north of Sweden : A study of dating representativeness within previous research regarding the chronological placements of trapping pits

Markström, Alma January 2024 (has links)
Sweden has proven to be a fruitful country when it comes to history and ancient archeological monuments. However one specific type of ancient monument stands out in both quantity and in their distribution, trappings pits. Sweden has about 30 000 documented trapping pits spread throughout northern Sweden. However, even though there is a large quantity of trapping pits that have been documented, determining the age of a trapping pit is a difficult task. This practice has been largely debated by Swedish archaeologists and is to this day seen as problematic when it comes to the radiocarbon dating of trapping pits. This thesis will discuss these topics. What exactly does the date show? Will it show the time of its construction? Perhaps the time of its use? Or it could be completely erroneous? Receiving a false radiocarbon dating of an ancient monument could prove very controversial and adverse, because reliable dates are the very foundation needed in order to place an ancient monument in a context. Without being able to date an ancient monument, interpretations of societal origin and function will be harder to determine and largely up for debate. Chronologies only reflect and represent the data and information that has been fed into it. This often leaves an uncertainty concerning which data that actually shows an open and honest representation of trapping pits, and which data shows a false or misleading representation. This thesis will therefore analyze previous chronologies that have been used to represent trapping pits and show exactly how the data was gathered, used and represented. Three primary archaeological studies will therefore be showcased and analyzed to determine if the result can actually represent an honest timeframe of when the pits were constructed.

Entomological analysis of a Celtic well in Nördlingen, Germany / Entomologisk analys av en keltisk brunn i Nördlingen, Tyskland

Kjellström, Caesar January 2024 (has links)
An analysis of the insect fauna in a sample from a Celtic well in southern Germany dated to 133 BC has been carried out. The fauna is congruent with a typical ‘farmland fauna’, as outlined by Smith et al. (2019) and also indicate a couple of settlement-related practices, – namely herding of sheep and retting of nettles for fibre-manufacturing.

Environmental Archaeology for a Thracian Tomb in Tash Bair, Bulgaria

Hallenga, Yara January 2024 (has links)
In this magister thesis project, soil samples from the late 5th to early 4th century BCE, Thracian tomb in Tash Bair, Bulgaria, have been analysed with geoarchaeological and archaeobotanical methods to supplement and corroborate the existing theories about the site. The tomb had a wooden roof which was suspected to have collapsed already in antiquity. The cremation was believed to have been done elsewhere, and only the remains were brought into the tomb in an organic vessel. Magnetic susceptibility (MS), phosphate analysis (CitP), loss on ignition (LOI) and XRF analyses were used to study the environmental record contained in the soil. Archaeobotanical material was extracted using floatation as well as sorting, and the samples were documented using microscope photography. Amongst others, fragments of bones, charcoal, wood were found, but also seeds, roots, earthworm faeces and a lot of tiny shells and shell fragments. Certain spikes in MS and phosphate concentration were observed, indicating the presence of metals and possible organic grave goods. The traces of several heavy metals in the samples ask for further research. The organic container of the cremated remains is suggested to have been created using Typha sp

Beslag eller buckla? : En studie av platta järnfragment från hallhuset i Birkas Garnison

Bäckheden, Anna January 2006 (has links)
<p>This paper deals with flat iron fragments from the Viking Age hall situated in Birkas Garrison, Adelsö parish in Uppland. The aim of the study was to identify which objects these flat fragments were originally derived from. The aim was also to discuss the function of these objects and their presence in the hall. This would hopefully increase the knowledge about the hall and the warriors who lived and worked there. In some cases the fragments form and placement in the hall has not provided enough information to classify the object from which they derived. Where it has been possible, a majority of the fragments has been interpreted as parts of chest mounts or shield buckles. The result of the analysis shows the possibility of a large chest having once stood in the southwest corner of the hall.</p>

Ansiktsrekonstruktioner - I betraktarens öga / Facial reconstruction - In the eye of the beholder

Gustavsson, Linnéa January 2017 (has links)
In theory, a facial reconstruction can sound quite easy. There are handbooks that describe the process step by step and for the untrained eye all skulls look almost the same. However, this is not the case. Every skull has it ́s unique shape and proportions which make up our significant variations in our faces. It is what make us distinguishable from one another. The work of a forensic artist combine science and art in the fields of archeology and anthropology with forensic methods. This paper will take you through the journey, beginning with the history with the development of the early science to our modern techniques in forensic cases. It will include case files of modern forensic facial reconstruction and reconstructions of famous people that has been done throughout the years. The analyze and discussion will focus on the problematic aspect of recreating a face for a human and the use of reconstruction in museums and if it ́s a reliable enough to use in forensic police work.

Den arkeologiska kommunikationen och den privilegierade arkeologen / The Archeaological Communication and the privileged archaeologist.

Rebecka, Engström January 2017 (has links)
Archaeology is a popular subject that is often depicted in popular media. Archaeology is also an academic field that contributes to national and individual identities. Therefor archaeologists conducting research need to be aware of the political and ethical implications their work may have. This essay presents and discuss previous research done about archaeologists and their communication efforts. Moreover, the essay also presents scientist communication goals and tries to discuss it in relation to Uppsala University’s and the department of Archaeology and Ancient History goals and guidelines. The discussion is based largely on a survey made by the author. Questions discussed are: who should write about archaeology? Would a better communication create a more “correct” use of history? Who has the right to write about archaeology? Is Uppsala University’s goals in line with how the scientist perceive and conduct their communication mission? The essay is based on previous research and a survey conducted by the author. The survey was sent to eight archaeology professors active at Campus Gotland, Uppsala university. Five responded to the survey. The method used in the essay is comparative literature analysis. The result of the survey is discussed in relation to Uppsala university and departments goals. The essay shows that archaeologists need more time to be able to conduct their communication goals more efficient and at a higher volume than present. The essay also states that archaeologists often have other work-related priorities than communication with the adjacent society.

Marknadsväsendet i Övre Norrlands inland : En analys av arkeologiska resultat från Arjeplogs och Arvidsjaurs gamla marknadsplatser / Commercial Exchange in inland areas of Northern Norrland : An Analysis of Archaeological Results from Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur Historical Marketplaces

Viktor, Linusson January 2019 (has links)
The 17thcentury’s marketplaces established in the peripheral areas of Fennoscandia were revealingly intertwined in inter-cultural encounters of minorities as they were in market exchange. Historical sources supply insight in the trade between Sámi and wealthy merchants, but nonetheless they are to be criticized for beingauthored from an outside perspective. The archaeological record, however, provides an alternative approach to knowledge about the history of trade in Sápmi. This paper proposes to shed light on what archaeology can reveal about two contemporary marketplaces: Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur. This is accomplished through compiling and presenting the archaeological record of each marketplace in two separate case studies. Sequentially, some observations are discussed within the context of each marketplace, and later the archaeological record of them both are juxtaposed to each other. Hence, minor deviations from the historical framework are considered and reviewed as the study settle in for a terminal discussion of the results. From here the archaeologically based reality of market exchange in Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur intend to function as non-biased means for the local community to raise awareness of their past, and to invoke interest in further excavations.
