(En)Compassing Heart: A Youth-led, Grassroots NGOs Navigation Towards Sustainability

Rachel, Larabee 14 December 2009 (has links)
(En)Compassing Heart explores and documents the organizational journey of POR AMOR Community Enhancement Initiatives. POR AMOR is a current, Toronto based, youth-led, non-profit organization I co-founded with three other young women in 2003. POR AMOR initiatives focus on youth empowerment and specifically helping young people to make responsible transitions into adulthood and become active leaders in their communities. Through the use of arts-informed methodological practices, this project is constructed as a modern narrative, infused with spoken-word poetry, to track the journey of a young girl from her passion for the arts to becoming an empowered individual within her community. The young protagonist is representative of the journey of POR AMOR, our journey as young people navigating our way to meaningful work in communities. The mission of POR AMOR is to promote and facilitate art-based youth empowerment initiatives in local and international community contexts.

Duran Salvadó, Noemí 03 May 2012 (has links)
‘The school as a conversation with strangers: Researching with children through artistic languages’ This thesis pretends to rehearse alternative ways of inhabiting today's educational institutions. These centres have been designed in relation to current educational legislation, the majority of which is interpreted in a way that results in the enactment of traditional schools, which still bear the mark of the Industrial Revolution. Through personal narrative, the author goes back to school, recuperating her own experiences as a student, as a teacher, and as a researcher. She interrogates the structures that regulate ways of acting and being in the school context, bringing to light what forms are privileged by hegemonic educational discourses. Focussed on how the experience of subjectivity is configured in school, the researcher develops her fieldwork in a primary school in Catalonia, which in 2007 won a national prize from the Spanish government in honour of their Conflict Resolution and Mediation strategies and practices. In this centre, the first phase of the thesis (ethnographic observation) takes place, during which the researcher questions how children's personal stories circulate through the school environment, exploring the possibilities provided by the school for a child to become the author of his/her self. The bulk of the research takes place during a second phase, in which the researcher initiates an enquiry, together a group of children, into 'what and how we can learn from what happens between us in school'. This project is a shared research process, where both the researcher and the children rehearse other ways of getting involved in the school environment. This work stems from an interest in exploring new languages in education that can make us more sensitive to our relationships with each other, without defaulting to a predetermined mindset. It is in this regard that the metaphor of school as a conversation between strangers emerges, where the impossibility of knowing the other is seen as a pedagogical opportunity that drives us to explore the space of difference through our imagination and creativity.

Ράικου, Αναστασία 26 July 2013 (has links)
The present dissertation has as its object the study of selected dimensions of teacher education and specifically the investigation of developing critical thinking in learners and educators in the context of higher education. The aim is to study the implementation in higher education of a modern method which relies on the use of art and comes from the field of adult education. One of the objectives is the examination of the applicability, in formal educational context and to learners who are going through the phase of early adulthood, in order to strengthen and promote the development of critical reflection. At the same time, this research aims to investigate possible changes to assumptions of trainees, which are associated with the implementation of the method, focusing particularly on the study of the degree of maturity and breadth of these changes.

The aesthetic dimension is boarded for some philosophers since modernity until the period contemporary as the place of reconciliation of the rupture between citizen and object, that is reflected in the dichotomy between the facultieses: sensitivity and intellect; desire and cognition. One third college, that is usually not considered in these divisions bipartite of the man, is of the aesthetic judgment, a college of the filling of a suit of the sensification of moral ideas. This text brings some considerations on the aesthetic judgment, from the philosophy of Kant and of the writings of Schiller. The aesthetic experience, for Kant, is a form of communication in the intersubjecetives relations of the men, thus being, must have an unifying power. For Schiller, it are médium for which the human being if form for the true freedom politics? Formation that says respect to the collective context, and not solely to the individual. With base in this theoretical apparatus, at as a moment, some reflections on the importance of the aesthetic formation for the current days are elaborated. By means of the art intellectual can itself be developed aesthetic and the human beings, so that they also can be full beings in its dignity human being. But the division between reason/emotion is also reflected in the organization of the education that it aims at to form beings divided and fragmented for a specialized world. Or either, in the process of pertaining to school formation the desvalor to the aesthetic experience and judgment is doubtless, having, therefore, to compromise this formation, has seen that a potentiality of the human being is blocked.

Therefore, the following questions have also been delimited: Which senses are elaborated and constructed by the referred teachers about the teaching of Art? How to render as problematic and (re)signify them as from the collective analysis of teaching work? Starting with the research on education proposals, a qualitative study was performed, taking reflection and analysis of scientific texts as methodological procedures, official documents on teaching of Art. Faced with this, the didactic proposal of teachers, taking as an anchor the Cultural-Historical perspective ideas and studies of the “Art-Education” contributions. It was evidenced, as from the questioning activities offered to the students and theoretical contributions, that working with the Visual Arts was resized: the place of art in the weekly plan was reviewed, there was a greater concern on discussing the visual elements that constitute the work, historical contextualization of the art object and the artist himself, the emergence of didactic proposals, with broader creation possibilities by the students and the classroom reconfiguration, as a space to use art. Evidences can be verified on teacher’s reports, in the weekly plan and observations made by the researcher.
