It has been suggested that when a consolidated memory trace is recalled (reactivated), it becomes active and sensitive to modifications before stabilizing again in the long-term memory system. We have recently demonstrated that when the reactivation of a negative memory is followed by exposition to a psychosocial stressor, the memory for the negative material is enhanced in a long-lasting manner. Based on these results, the goal of this thesis is to clarify the role of physiological (stress hormones) and psychological stress on the modulation of reactivated memories. More precisely, the first study aimed to determine whether cortisol, a major stress hormone, is a key player in the modulation of reactivated memories. To do so, we have pharmacologically inhibited cortisol levels at the time of reactivating a memory composed of neutral and negative segments. Results showed that the reactivation of the negative material is decreased when cortisol levels are inhibited and this effect is still present four days later. Given that the stimuli used so far have a weak ecological validity, we wanted to determine whether other types of memories could also be modified upon their reactivation. The goal of the second study was to examine whether collective autobiographical memories were sensitive to the effects of stress at the time of reactivation. To do so, we have exposed participants to real newspaper excerpts, either neutral or negative, in order to reactivate the collective memories associated to these events. We have then exposed all the participants to a psychosocial stressor and their memory for the excerpts was assessed the following day. Results showed that women who have read negative news excerpts had a more pronounced physiological reactivity to the stressor and an increased memory for these news the following day. This phenomenon, however, was not observed in men. The goal of the third study was to determine whether personal autobiographical memories were sensitive to the effects of stress at the time of their reactivation. We have asked participants to recall two personal events, either negative or neutral. We then exposed them to a stressor and their memory for these events was tested the following day. The results showed that reactivated personal autobiographical memories were not sensitive to stress. Globally, the results of this thesis show that cortisol has the capacity to modulate reactivated negative memories, but that the nature (extrinsic vs. intrinsic) and the intensity of the memories are determining factors for this phenomenon to occur.

Life on the margins : the autobiographical fiction of Charles BukowskiBigna, Daniel, Humanities & Social Sciences, Australian Defence Force Academy, UNSW January 2005 (has links)
Charles Bukowski devoted his writing career to turning his own life into poetry and prose. In poems and stories about his experiences as one of the working poor in post war America, and in those depicting his experiences as a writer of the American underground, Bukowski represents himself as both a literary and social outsider. Bukowski expresses an alternative literary aesthetic through his fictional persona, Henry Chinaski, who struggles to overcome his suffering in a world he finds absurd, and who embarks on a quest for freedom in his youth to which he remains committed all his life. This thesis examines Charles Bukowski's autobiographical fiction with a specific emphasis on five novels and one collection of short stories. In the novels, Post Office (1970), Factotum (1975), Women (1978), Ham on Rye (1982) and Hollywood (1989), and in a number of short stories in the collection Hot Water Music (1983), Bukowski explores different periods of Chinaski???s life with a dark humour, revealing links between Chinaski???s struggle with the absurd and those aspects comprising Bukowski???s alternative aesthetic. The thesis focuses on such aspects of Bukowski???s art as the uncommercial nature of his publishing history, his strong emphasis on literary simplicity, the appearance of the grotesque and Bukowski???s obsession with nonconformity, drinking and sex. These aspects illuminate the distinctive nature of Bukowski???s art and its purpose, which is the transformation of an ordinary life into literature. This thesis argues that Bukowski illuminates possibilities that exist for individuals to create an identity for themselves through aesthetic self-expression. The thesis traces the development of Chinaski's non-conformist personality from Ham on Rye, based on Bukowski's youth in Los Angeles during the Depression, to Hollywood, Bukowski's ironic portrayal of Chinaski's brush with the commercial film industry. Through meeting the many challenges he faced throughout his life with defiance, honesty and an irreverent sense of humour, Bukowski invites readers to identify with his alternative world view. The thesis argues this particular aspect of his writing constitutes his most valuable contribution to twentieth century American fiction.

The mad´s word was for such a long time, renegade to marginality and silence. But now, through the study of Hospício é Deus, the mad´s word is evidenced. From the title, the lector can understand the whole dramatic experience lived by a woman, the narrator character Maura, and others women that filled the social scenario of 60´s. In the organization of her diary, mineira writer Maura Lopes Cançado used her memory to recreate the past and to search elements to justify the lived follies. Thereby, we can conceive the work like a literary creation in fact truth, bit by bit, is blurred with the artistic construction that transforms all in fiction. Hospício é Deus, talks about recreation, it makes us to refer to her biography, background of her work, that was marked by chaos of rebellion, intolerance and insanity. How can she approach her own life as literary material? This is the main subject that we study in the first chapter of this work, that compiles the Maura´s biographical data and her literature, as a way to rescues her from forgetfulness and introduce her in the Brazilian literary scene. Maura committed herself to the task of portraying the madness, investigating the equally benevolent and malevolent character that inspires the human acts. Indeed, the works opens up a huge row with the radical way that portrays the atrocities and neglect experienced by patients in hospice. Imbued with this critical awareness of the opposition of the values prevailing in Brazil of the 60´s, the narrator makes her social critique and criticism mainly imputed to her the taint of being a woman and mad. Hospício é Deus draws attention to the stylistic features used by Maura for the creation of her work. Identification of these resources was essential for the recognition of literary values of the text... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Teenagers at a Crossroad: Exploring Newcomer Teenagers’ Identity as Learners of Mathematics and English as an Additional LanguageFellus, Olga Osnat 26 November 2018 (has links)
This PhD thesis was set to examine newcomer teenagers’ identity as learners of mathematics and English as an Additional Language (EAL) in the context of their transition into the Canadian educational system. Drawing on Ivanič (1998) who suggests a four-part model for the conceptualization of identity as a co-constitutive multi-dimensional framework, and addressing Ricoeur’s (1992) etymological distinction between idem and ipse (identity as sameness and identity as selfhood), a research design was set up to allow for an exploration of newcomer teenagers’ identity as learners of mathematics and of English as an Additional Language (EAL). The theoretical framework of this study draws on Ivanič’s (1998) four identity-related dimensions of (a) autobiographical identities, (b) authorial identities, (c) discoursal identities, and (d) socioculturally available selfhoods. The research design comprised three sets of data collection through family and individual interviews and focus group discussions. Following a dissemination of a Call for Participants, six families who have recently emigrated from Israel to Canada expressed interest to participate in the research. In total, six sessions of 90-minute family-unit interviews, 16 sessions of 90-minute individual interviews, and two sets of all-parent and all-teenage focus groups lasting 90-minute each yielded 26 interviews of over 39 hours.
Data were organized according to the four identity-related dimensions that are developed in the theoretical framework of this study. Multiple, iterative rounds of analyses were conducted to first examine how identity is formulated in and through each of the four dimensions identified in the research literature and later explore the inter-relationship between the four identified dimensions and emergent themes. Findings reveal that teenage newcomers’ identity as learners of mathematics and EAL is multifarious, multidirectional, and inter-animated. While the teenage newcomers struggle with their developing identities as speakers of EAL and learners of mathematics in a new educational system, their collective identity as Israelis who make it against all odds, their developing stances in relation to EAL and mathematics, and the socioculturally available selfhoods draw a complex picture that depicts identity work in its making. Given the findings, the study adds to our understanding of the multifaceted and multidirectional nature of identity as crucial in the learning of EAL and mathematics among teenage newcomers.

Investigating the link between intrusive memories and cognitive controlSayan, Stephanie January 2016 (has links)
Intrusive memories are memories for negative autobiographical events that come to mind without being deliberately recalled (Hackmann, Ehlers, Speckens, & Clark, 2004). Previous research has demonstrated that intrusive memories, and negative reactions to intrusive memories, are an important feature of depression (Starr & Moulds, 2006; Williams & Moulds, 2008b) and contribute to the maintenance of depression longitudinally (Newby & Moulds, 2011c). It has also been established that intrusive memory experience is related to individual differences in cognitive control, specifically in proactive interference resolution (Verwoerd, Wessel, & de Jong, 2009; Verwoerd, Wessel, de Jong, Nieuwenhuis, & Huntjens, 2011). The present thesis aimed to extend upon these existing findings, using the Dual Mechanism of Control theory, which distinguishes between proactive and reactive modes of control (Braver, Gray, & Burgess, 2007). Furthermore, in view of some recent ambiguity of the defining feature of an intrusive memory, as compared to a negative involuntary memory more generally (Kvavilashvili, 2014; Moulds & Krans, 2015), another goal of the thesis was to incorporate a wider focus of involuntary memories, rather than focusing only on traditionally studied intrusive memories. Participants from the student population and local community were tested. Overall, results provide some evidence for a negative involuntary memory related deficit in proactive control, on both a classic and an emotional version of the AX-Continuous Performance Task (AX-CPT). Conversely, there was no link between intrusive or involuntary memory experience and reactive control. A brief mindfulness and self-compassion based intervention, designed to reduce negative reactions to intrusive memories, was also tested. The intervention was successful in reducing intrusive-memory distress, and recommendations for the future development of the intervention are presented.

The study presented here turns to the university life in its current profile, in dialogue with
the implementation of the public policies of democratization / internalization of the
educational spaces in the federal universities. The main objective of the current research is to analyze the formative experiences of university students of the popular stratum, especially those coming from public schools in the semi-arid region of Paraíba, that between 2006 and 2015, they entered, stayed in the campus of Cuité / UFCG and obtained success or outcome in the formation, giving continuity to the studies in a stricto sensu postgraduate (masters and doctorate), thus constructing, a “longstading university trajectory”. The contextual and constitutive specificities of this ongoing process require studies that may support other comparative investigations. For this purpose, assuming the assumptions of a qualitative research, which does not disregard the importance of quantitative elements, we seek to develop a Case Study. The corpus used to analyze the formative experiences are the autobiographical reports sent by 20 former students of the Cuité campus (subjects of the research), identified through a Base Questionnaire, applied through an online platform. The autobiographical report, beyond the traditional autobiographies, are instruments that inform the context of the university practices, observing the construction of a new profile of the Brazilian campus and of a new habitus in the current scenery of the federal universities. The theoretical basis adopted in the study proposes an interface between Social Sciences and Education. In this dialogue, the Sociology of Education is used, starting from Bourdieu and Lahire, referring to the university field, cultural capital, the social origins of the students and the construction of a new habitus in university practices and Sociohistorical Theory, Vygotsky and Leontiev, with the notions of mediation and mediating activities, seeking to understand the construction of the trajectories of formation of students from the relational point of view. Thus, the recent initiatives for the democratization of the access to public higher education are problematized, considering three dimensions: a) democratization of the
admission; b) democratization of the permanence conditions and c) academic success or outcome (initial formation and continuity of studies). The analysis points the initiatives and indicators of the ongoing democratization process, showing the State of Paraíba at the forefront of this process in relation to: 1) the gross and net enrollment rates in the population aged 18-24 years; 2) the growth in the number of students enrolled in public institutions from the public school; 3) an increase in number of students who declare themselves as mixed race or black in the federal network 4) to the entrance in the public university by students coming from families of the popular layers; 5) the importance of teacher training and the students' experience in initiation, resear ch, extension, teaching, monitoring, among others, resulting in the construction of their trajectories. It is a delimitation little explored in the study of the contemporary sociabilities with focus in the university formation in its current configuration. The study also questions the meaning of practices in the university and seeks to contribute to the evaluation of Higher Education policies and to the growth of Social Sciences on the approach of the theme.

Previous issue date: 2012-07-22 / The objective of this work is to promote the discussion about the pedagogical practice and analyze it by means of the record of a reading and writing project developed in a group of the 4th year (current 5th year) in the Elementary School, carried out at the São Paulo State Public School, Iracema de Barros Bertolaso, in the city of Mauá. It is also intended to make teachers aware of the importance of the work shared with the students, the respect to the childhood ideas and the certainty of how critical it is to connect teaching and learning to pleasure. The project resulted in the book Histórias hilárias de uma 4a série (e outros resgates), published by SCORTECCI and released in 2008. In order to reconstruct this story, we recovered the records of the teaching work experience I carried out in 2006, as well as a survey of documents, such as pictures, reports, productions of students and articles published in newspapers in which they took part. The research led me to make a new contact with some former-students to compose, also by means of interviews, this picture aimed at dimensioning the reach of the work carried out. Portraying our own practice and making it available for research formed the valuable tool to reconstruct the meaning of our actions as these provided us with significant data and reflection. Binding this analysis to the study of the personal formation course, made by means of a biographical approach, allowed us to amplify our understanding how much we brought the personal living influence to the teaching exercise. We believe that the personal formation path, as well as a living experience with a group of students, is justified in this research as they contribute to enlarge the studies on this subject-matter.

L'invention de soi dans la littérature romantique russe / The Invention of Self in the Russian romantic literatureSubbotina, Galina 09 December 2017 (has links)
In order to study how an individual expresses and invents himself in the Russian literature of the Romantic era, it is necessary to solve the problems connected with the peculiarities of the Russian cultural field. On the one hand, the various processes that were important for individualization in Western Europe (the Renaissance, the Reformation, the Enlightenment) had in Russian history special, weakened forms. On the other hand, the secret confession, which, according to M. Foucault, is fundamental to the development of introspection in Europe, did not have much importance in the Russian Orthodox Church. In addition, autobiographical and autoreflexive practices are blocked in Russia by a variety of taboos, which are imposed by intellectual, cultural, and power circles. This raises the question of how Russian writers avoided all these limitations, when the author's self-expression had become extremely important in the European romantic literature. To answer to this question, we investigated various areas of literature, including peripheral: recognized and secondary genres, personal stories, translations, women's prose, texts written in French, etc. From this point of view, the romantic period is not just an epoch of transition, as it is often represented in the history of Russian literature, but the most important moment for affirming subjectivity in Russian culture.

This dissertation aimed to understand outcomes and change processes associated with a career counseling intervention targeted at university students. A constructivist narrative model of career counseling, based on Life-Design Paradigm, was developed and delivered individually, in approximately 10 sessions, once a week. The first study investigated the outcomes of the intervention in career adaptability, meaning in life and clients’ autobiographical narratives (in autobiographical reasoning and emotional valence), using a quasi-experimental design. The second and the third studies aimed to understand the relation between the outcomes of the intervention and narrative change processes, assessed through the innovative moments model in the sessions. These studies were conducted with two clients with different characteristics. Results from the first study showed that the intervention was effective in promoting career adaptability resources of concern, control, curiosity and confidence, as well as career development dimensions that have conceptual proximity to adaptability, as professional identity, career decision, career planning and professional self-efficacy. Participants also demonstrated a significant increase in the dimension of presence of meaning in life, and a significant decrease in negative emotional salience used to narrate their life stories. No significant change was observed in the comparison group, constituted by students that were not participating in interventions at the same period. The case studies contributed to an integrated understanding of outcomes and processes of change, showing that positive outcomes in career counseling are associated with a pattern of progressive complexification of innovative moments during the process, and with the presence of reflection about change and reconceptualization innovative moments. These types of innovation differed from one case to the other, and different outcomes related to autobiographical reasoning were also observed. Connections between the process of autobiographical reasoning and these types of innovative moments are addressed. In addition, relations between client’s demands and psychosocial developmental characteristics with the outcomes and processes of change during career counseling are delineated.
This research had as general objective to understand how the professional development process of music teacher occurs from its relation with the school of basic education. The conceptual view of place of Tuan and Lévy and Lussault, of professional development of Nóvoa and of biographical construction of Delory-Momberger, as well as autobiographical research and narratives constitute the theoretical-methodological reference of this research. The study was carried out through narrative interviews with four licensed teachers, which are experienced and active in basic education schools in Porto Alegre, RS. The analysis of the data was based on the macro-themes that emerged from the interview data: the work in the basic education school; the relationship with the school subjects - the other; the self-training. These macro themes are perceptible marks in the professional development process of the music teacher. The analysis indicates that the professional development of each teacher is unique and personal, since it is constituted through experiences. The other, the self and the construction of the self with the other - the place, are the axes that sustain the professional development of the teachers. It is in alterity that the teacher develops him/herself. Therefore, to recognize oneself in the experience at and with the school, there is a condition for the professional development of music teacher. This experience with the place is the toca. The toca is an internal place of formation, which, by amalgamating personal and professional formation becomes a promoter of professional development. These dynamics of the process of professional development comes from the constitution of the toca (ethos), of its dwelling, in which the teachers construct place in themselves, being constituted biographically from the school (place). The present research seeks to give greater visibility to the relations between the teacher and the school as a basis for the professional development of the teacher, thinking of the school not as a background, but of the complexity of its spatial dimension, as a way to understand the process in which it allies the training with the acting and providing clues to think about the training of teachers in undergraduate music courses.
