No. of bitstreams: 1 Mariana Johansson Siracusa.pdf: 922242 bytes, checksum: 472047c2727d0225ac0fb937f84477a4 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-03-16 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Amongst the basic concepts underlying the behavioral approach, the concept of verbal behavior is highlighted by Skinner in his book Verbal Behavior (1957). Taken into consideration that the studies about Skinner’s concept of verbal behavior have, for the most part, approached his path until the publication of Verbal Behavior, and that the studies about verbal behavior permeate throughout Skinner’s career, the present work aimed to analyze the evolution of Skinner's studies on verbal behavior after the publication of the book Verbal Behavior and pinpoint changes, complements, reiterations and possible exclusions. For that purpose, all of Skinner’s work published after 1957 containing the search words: verbal, language, mand, tact, echoic, copy, vocal, transcription, textual, intraverbal, autoclitic, audience, dictation, speaker, listener, oral, linguistics e self-management was analyzed; 282 entries from the Notebooks publication (1980) were also assessed. In all, there were 369 texts analyzed, from which 13 analytical categories were created, including the definition of verbal behavior; the definition of verbal operant; the definition and description of each one of the verbal operants: mand, echoic, textual, transcription, intraverbal and tact; the definition of audience; and four conceptual tools: discrimination and generalization, multiple causation of verbal behavior; definition and description of the autoclitic verbal operant; and self-control of verbal behavior. Complements were found in relation to the definitions of verbal behavior and verbal operants. Exclusions were found in the categories: Definition of Verbal Operant, Definition and Description of Verbal Operant Tanscription, and Definition and Description of Verbal Operant Tact. In the remaining categories, only reiterations were found. The results obtained by the present research make it possible to claim that Skinner made adjustments in the way he conceptualized verbal behavior throughout the publications investigated, in relation to what he had previously stated in his 1957 book / Dentre os conceitos básicos que dão fundamento à abordagem comportamental, destaca-se o conceito de comportamento verbal, apresentado por Skinner no livro Verbal Behavior (1957).

F. Skinner and his proposi-tions to intervene in social questions, between 1953 and 1960. To a certain extent, we sought to continue the research of Andery (1990), in which all of the publications of Skin-ner between 1931 and 1953 were analyzed, with Science and Human Behavior as the last analyzed work. We investigated how Skinner advanced in the definition of the assump-tions of his science and the proposition of social analyzes and interventions in the first years after the publication of Science and Human Behavior. Therefore, considering the assumption of inseparability between the science of behavior proposed by Skinner and his approach to social issues, all of Skinner’s available texts, published between 1953 and 1960 after Science and Human Behavior, were identified and collected, in order to classify how much of it was changed/maintained when compared with the previous development of the skinnerian explanatory system. We analyzed the selected texts based on two groups of categories: 1. Excerpts related to the constitution of ontological, epistemological and methodological assumptions of behavioral science; and 2. Excerpts related to the consti-tution of social propositions. There were additions, but no rupture, in all categories ana-lyzed when we compared our data with those of the period analyzed by Andery (1990). The results obtained in the present research allow us to sustain that Skinner improved the assumptions of his science and his social proposals, introducing new conceptual discus-sions and new data from relevant basic and applied research / A presente pesquisa teve como objetivo analisar o desenvolvimento de pressupostos epistemológicos, ontológicos e metodológicos defendidos por B. F. Skinner e suas proposições para intervir em questões sociais, entre 1953 e 1960.

A união do corpo e da alma n\'A estrutura do comportamento / The union of body and soul in The Structure of Behavior

Fujita, Natália Giosa 29 August 2014 (has links)
We try to show how Merleau-Ponty\'s first doctoral thesis, The Structure of Behavior, allows for a comeback of the classical problem of the union of body and soul, once it criticizes the mechanicist empirism founding the scientific attempts (from neurophysiology and psychology) to explain the organic life and behavior, while unearthing in those fenomena a milieu that differs from the transcendental self embedded in criticism as a final explanation and foundation of knowledge, and as the limit to what one can say about being. We also try to point out to the limits of such conceptual framework, in which body and its performances, specially perception, may again play a crucial role in philosophical investigation, in particular because of excessive emphasis placed upon the connection between symbol and truth, and for a lack of positive description of the articulation between the so-called inferior forms of behavior connected to instincts, organic life and circular time and the symbolic level related to truth, freedom and History

No. of bitstreams: 1 Enzo Banti Bissoli.pdf: 681490 bytes, checksum: 6d8703ecbcb70f297c310a7bfa9f3877 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-05-24 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The objective of this work was to identify in Skinner's production, in the 1970s, subsidies that allow us to answer the following questions: What conditions can allow humans to behave in the present moment, considering the remote consequences that their behavior will produce? and How can the Behavior Analysis help humans to behave in the present moment, considering the remote consequences that their behavior will produce? B. F. Skinner's twenty-three texts, published and republished in the 1970s, were fully read and analyzed. Excerpts were selected of each text grouped into five categories of analysis. Through this categorization, it was possible to observe that, according to Skinner, humans beings are able to control themselves and act in the world, and can build environments that take the remote consequences of their behavior into account. One way humans do that is by planning a culture in which they behave under control of the effects that they will produce in the behavior of others, building environments that enable the selection of behaviors that promote the survival of members of the culture, by taking the remote consequences of their behavior into account and can increase the chances that the culture and species continue to exist in the future. It was also possible to observe that the Experimental Analysis of Behavior can contribute to this planning, due to the way by which it produces knowledge on the ways to control the behavior of human beings, building environments and analyzing the effects of environmental variables on behavior.

Two operations characterize this systematization: one of organization and the next, on the fundamentation of Skinner s nine texts about criticism of this culture. In order to point the way towards the field of studies this work (culture) was approached by Skinner, the first chapter was built in order to characterize the philosophical presuppositions of radical behaviorism. This chapter indicated the philosophical demands of culture should be addressed. Then, in the second chapter, the notion of culture in the work of Skinner was explored. Two concepts have proved important for understanding the concept of culture: social behavior and verbal behavior. Both received a specific approach each one on an item. Moreover, in the same chapter, deepened further the concept of culture unraveling the relationship between culture and subjectivity. The chapter ended with a discussion about a possible notion of "critic" that could be applied at cultural practices. Critic to a cultural practice would be legitimate, the definition of "critic" adopted in the present work, when such practice would produce threat to the survival of the culture. Based on this criterion, we identified cultural practices analyzed in the nine texts that could be considered under criticism from Skinner. These practices were grouped into thematic units that were the basic methodological feature that helped in the task of systematic criticism of Skinner to contemporary Western culture. Four thematic units were formed: internalization of the main determinants of behavior, neglect of the remote future, impoverishment of behavioral repertoire and dissemination of aversive control. It was observed in the present analysis in thematic units, a strong commitment of Skinner's critic with its conceptual and philosophical system / O presente trabalho consiste em uma sistematização da crítica de Skinner à cultura contemporânea ocidental.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Samanta Ramos Cavalcanti.pdf: 584916 bytes, checksum: ef090089344a76ff210033963c4e0dc2 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-05-23 / Skinner has addressed, in different moments of his work, the contemporary issues and their implications to the remote future of culture. This paper consists of an analysis and systematization of Skinner s proposals which ultimately aim to promote the survival of culture. Both main data resources were the books Science and Human Behavior (1953) and The Technology of Teaching (1968), as well as other texts which ended up being relevant to complement the results obtained. Initially, it were selected, from each of the read works, excerpts referred to the Skinner s proposals of culture survival, brought along with the parts related to the issues that gave cause to it and their respective justifications. The proposals were gathered among three great categories: elimination of aversive control, the remote future as a target of behavior science and forward training as an education target. It was noted that the main proposals found in favor of the remote future of culture as the aim of the science of behavior regarded the necessity of a technology of intervention based on a science of behavior, which should be the main tool for the teaching of cultural practices which aim, ultimately, the survival of the culture. In relation to elimination of aversive control, it was noted that the practices proposed by Skinner suggest the substitution of aversive control by control by contingencies of positive reinforcement. The proposals gathered by the title forward training as an education target are related to an educational political reform having what should be taught and the techniques of teaching as the main changing points / Skinner abordou, em diferentes momentos de sua obra, os problemas contemporâneos e suas implicações para o futuro remoto da cultura.

This research investigated consumer behavior for beverages (beer, soda and juice) through the analysis of one year choices for 423 consumers in the city of Sao Paulo. Such choices were analyzed according to a model (the Behavioral Perspective Model) developed by Gordon Foxall. This model split the benefits (reinforcements) of the brands in both utilitarian and informative and it was created based on Behavior Analysis interpretation of behavior. This study aimed to understand how these benefits (utilitarian and informative) control consumer choices, identifying the levels of loyalty and fidelity of consumers to these benefits. The findings confirm some patterns previously discovered in past studies: a) there was considerable loyalty towards high informative benefits; b) there was considerable loyalty towards low utilitarian benefits; c) loyalty towards specific utilitarian and informative levels were slightly superior to the one s previously identified in other similar studies; d) price did not appeared as a relevant factor in determining brand volume of each main category brand / O comportamento de consumo é um assunto-chave na sociedade atual, sendo há muito um dos principais motores das economias ocidentais ou das economicamente ocidentalizadas.

A therapist moving beyond therapy into applied theatre practice : a personal account by a Rogerian practitioner

Baker, Erin Sullivan January 2014 (has links)
As a Rogerian mental health therapist, a personal journey was taken that establishes my practice ethics as an applied theatre practitioner. What was undertaken was the unpacking of a practice ethics gained through my training as an actor and therapist. This thesis examines the role of codes or standards of practice in humanistic counselling, applied theatre and a synthesized practice between both. Standards of practice shape these practices through the specific ideologies relevant within the institutional cultures in which the practice is applied. This is especially problematic when the institutional setting understands care delivery as practice shaped by problem identification, interventions and expected outcome goals. Further, the ideology that underpins the standard, becomes self-reinforcing and tends to exert influence over what type of practice is culturally relevant or considered best practice within the institutional setting. This is of concern for practitioners who practice from a different or multiple ideological base from the institutional setting in which they work. A shaping goal of the research was to test-out, through critical evaluation, if the American Counseling Association's (ACA's) standards of practice was relevant and applicable to a synthesized practice between humanistic counselling practice and applied theatre practice. The results posed by the critical evaluation suggest that the ACAs standard is not applicable because it promotes empirical, or rather, evidenced-based models of practice over humanist ones. Because of its limited scope of application, the ACAs model is not applicable to synthesized or dual practices that bridge particular fields. Through lines of valuing within bridged fields, usually represent multiple ideological drivers. It was found that as a standard of practice the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) standard is a better fit. It is compatible with social construction. Within the research Carl Rogers' humanistic, client-centered and non-directive therapy is contrasted with Joseph Chaikin's brand of experimental theatre exemplified in his The Presence of the Actor. Chaikin's book is used as a tool to reconstruct examples of what I came to understand as ethical practice while attending drama school in the UK. The understandings gleaned by the juxtaposition impacts how I understand the ACAs utility as a practitioner.

Prevalence of emotional and behavioural problems : pitfalls and practices among secondary school learners in Ethiopia

Woldetsadik, Dereje Adefris 06 1900 (has links)
The prevalence of emotional and behavioural problems in secondary school adolescents is regarded as widely spread globally. Their effects/pitfalls are also a concern that cannot be ignored. Thus, this study dealt with this issue among adolescents, as well as with pitfalls and practices of secondary schools in Ethiopia, with particular focus on East Showa Administrative Zone of Oromiya National Regional state. Consequently, the study intended to:  examine what social competence problems (activity problems, social activities problems and academic performance problems) are experienced by secondary school adolescents of Ethiopia.  determine the relationship between sex groups and social competence problems by secondary school adolescents of Ethiopia.  examine the trends of emotional/internalising and behavioural/externalising problems among secondary school adolescents of Ethiopia.  determine the relationship displayed between sex groups and emotional/internalising and behavioural/externalising problems by secondary school adolescents of Ethiopia.  examine the relationship display between age groups and emotional/internalising and behavioural/externalising problems by secondary school adolescents of Ethiopia. To address the objectives of the study, a descriptive survey and correlational study were employed. To achieve this target, the Amharic and the Afan-Oromo versions of Achenbach’s (2001) youth self-report (YSR) were used to collect data from 714 research participants of secondary school adolescents out of 27,643 in the East Showa Administrative Zone of Oromiya Regional State-Ethiopia, from 8 secondary schools. In analysing the data, basic descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentages, percentiles and T-scores as well as ANOVA were employed. In general, the results of the study demonstrated that the prevalence of emotional and behavioural problems of Ethiopian secondary school adolescents was relatively lower (about 9%) in comparison to many other countries. Moreover, girls showed more internalising problems (11.58%) than boys (9.63%) and vice versa in externalising problems. Consequently, girls accounted for 8.6% who fell into a clinical category whereas amongst boys, 14.83% were classified into such as category. In contrary to the other findings males were scored higher than females in withdrawal/depressed subscales (4.23% and 2.74% respectively). Furthermore, statistically significant relationships between academic competences with activities, social activities, somatic complaints, social problems and externalising problems were discovered. Fulfilling and rendering appropriate guidance and counselling services in the schools comprised the first dimension of the recommendations of this work. Furthermore, establishing school based mental health services to alleviate the problems is another key point of the recommendation to assist adolescents with emotional and behavioural problems in secondary schools of Ethiopia. / Psychology / Ph.D. (Psychology)

Godin, Danny 08 1900 (has links)
Instructional design for non-educational video games is an ill-defined discipline that lacks established methods. Contrarily to the one used in schools or other education or formation institutions, video game instructional design is done by video game designers who often have no teaching training. An instructional design model for non-educational games is developed, in this paper, based on video game content analysis and educational science theories. Considering the limited resources available for the development of this model, it lays grounds for the establishment of a more elaborate model on instructional video game design, offers insights on education through games and can help video game designers plan the instructional design for their games.
