Krev, čest a hrůza. Reprezentace pevnostní války v obléhacích denících britských obránců Bergen-op-zoom z roku 1747 / Blood, honour and horror. Representations of siege warfare in siege journals of British defenders of Bergen-op-zoom in 1747.Wohlmuth, Petr January 2015 (has links)
This Master's degree thesis, named Blood, honour and horror. Representations of siege warfare in journals of British defenders of Bergen-op-zoom in 1747, adheres at specific genre of historical anthropology of war and military. It poses questions regarding ana-lysis of contemporary culture of war and its individual variables, their interdependence and changing configuration during the siege of Bergen-op-zoom in 1747, during culmination point of War of Austrian Succession. Meaning of this text consists of an effort to discover alternative way of treating historical sources and to depart traditional conservative methods of analyzing the war conflict using national or confessional military stereotypes, essential features of key actors or theoretical normative of military science. The text comes to conclusion that most irregular and dramatic character of the siege of Bergen-op-zoom was primarily caused by profound misunderstanding between defenders and attackers regarding culture of war, especially acceptable definition of military honour and of legitimate combat techniques. Slovenští Židé v Terezíně, Sachsenhausenu, Ravensbrücku a Bergen- Belsenu, 1944/1945 / Slovak Jews in Theresienstadt, Sachsenhausen, Ravensbrück and Bergen-Belsen, 1944/1945Putík, Daniel January 2016 (has links)
The dissertation focuses on the fates of some 5 000 men, women and children of mostly Jewish descent who were deported by German Nazi authorities from the occupied Slovak State into the Sachsenhausen, Ravensbrück, Bergen-Belsen and Theresienstadt concentration camps in the period ranging from November 1944 to the end of March 1945. The main objectives of the dissertation include the establishment of the number and identity of the deportees, the circumstances of their arrest, deportation, imprisonment and liberation as well as the causes of survival, or death, of the victims of racial persecution during the German occupation of Slovakia. Based on a comparative and content analysis of the available archival sources, oral and written testimonies by survivors and, to a limited extent, of secondary literature, the writer attempts to explain the conduct of the perpetrators and victims as well as the general historical context of the deportation and imprisonment of Slovak Jews by the Nazi regime. Based on an analysis of documents related to the anti-Jewish measures taken by the Nazi security apparatus in Slovakia with the assistance of local collaborators, more general conclusions are made with regard to the development of the Nazi "Final Solution of the Jewish Question" in the German Reich and the...

Through the Lens of a Frontline Worker: The Personal Reflections of a Health Education Specialist During the COVID-19 PandemicHerring, Danielle L. January 2024 (has links)
By the end of 2020, the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), better known as COVID-19, had produced over 82,357,482 confirmed cases and 1,802,393 related deaths worldwide. The first pandemic many had ever experienced, the call of duty for public health professionals in the United States and globally was strong. While the contributions of doctors, nurses, and first responders are frequently acknowledged in the media and health-related publications, forgotten key players include health education specialists.
Because of their critical role in public health preparedness and response, special attention should be given to their work during disasters and public health emergencies. As the Screening Manager of the New Jersey Department of Health (DOH) COVID-19 Testing Center located at Bergen Community College, I observed firsthand how COVID-19 made people suffer, but also the resilience among health education specialist responders. Using narrative inquiry to detail my response experience, this dissertation offers the world my story, while highlighting the onset of the pandemic in New Jersey from March to June 2020 and the practice of incorporating relevant health education competencies.

Paleoethnobotany and household archaeology at the Bergen site : a Middle Holocene occupation in the Fort Rock Basin, OregonHelzer, Margaret Mary, 1963- 12 1900 (has links)
xv, 296 p. : ill. (some col.) A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries under the call number: KNIGHT E78.O6 H44 2001 / This study analyzes the botanical and archaeological material from a Middle Holocene occupation at the Bergen site, located in the Fort Rock Basin, Oregon. It serves to complement and enhance over a decade of research focused on regional settlement patterns in the Northern Great Basin. While previous studies in the region have focused on broadly based settlement patterns, this study shifted the interpretive lens toward an in-depth analysis of a single family dwelling, which was occupied some 6000 years ago. It thus introduces the domain of "household archaeology" into the practice of archaeological research in the Northern Great Basin for the first time. Macrobotanical analysis was conducted on 215 soil samples collected on a 50cm grid from this house. An additional 20 samples were analyzed from a second house structure at the site.
These analyses have provided evidence of diet, environment, and social behavior associated with the prehistoric occupants of the house. The abundance of charred bulrush (Scirpus ), goosefoot (Chenopodium ), and waada (Suaeda ) seeds in the deposits indicate that small seeds of wetland-adapted plants were an important dietary resource during the Middle Holocene in the Fort Rock Basin.
The patterned distribution of botanical material in 215 soil samples across the floor of the house provide strong evidence of prehistoric human activity areas. The highest concentration of seeds and charcoal in the house was located near the central fire hearth, where cooking and food preparation took place. An east-facing entryway is suggested by the presence of a secondary concentration of seeds and charcoal on the eastern edge of the structure. Analysis also revealed a differential distribution of seed types across the house floor. Higher concentrations of bulrush in the northern area of the floor, away from the hearth, suggest the presence of sleeping mats.
Results of this study indicate that plant remains are not evenly distributed through archaeological deposits, therefore care must be taken when sampling for macrobotanical remains. Research at the Bergen site provides the basis for recommendations to assist future archaeologists in determining the best and most cost-effective locations within excavations to take macrobotanical samples. / Committee in charge: Dr. C. Breakdown and Adaptation: The Western Allies and the Liberation of the Concentration CampsReeves, Jeremy Ray 07 1900 (has links)
In mid-April 1945, US and UK forces swept through Germany. The Western Allies had spent years preparing for the moment, cultivating a civil affairs capacity since the Interwar Period and devoting thousands of hours to planning for the occupation. However, the rapid pace of the advance stretched the new capability beyond its limits as frontline forces seized large swaths of Germany and encountered exponentially increasing numbers of displaced persons. The accidental discoveries of Buchenwald and Bergen-Belsen and the tens of thousands of survivors suffering appalling levels of starvation and disease overwhelmed the forces dispatched to address the sites, resulting in a sluggish response. Significant flaws in Allied planning assumptions caused the breakdown that potentially cost hundreds of unnecessary deaths. Yet, operational staff officers from the Supreme Headquarters down to the division level recognized the poor response and, in two short weeks, adapted the plan to address the conditions on the front. Policy adjustments and messages from General Eisenhower removed ambiguity in existing guidance and provided clear direction to frontline forces. More importantly, the Western Allies formally merged the campaign plan guiding combat operations, OVERLORD, with the plan for occupation, ECLIPSE. The changes produced a marked improvement in the US liberation of Dachau on 29 April 1945, thereby demonstrating adaptation and innovation at the operational level of war.

Židé v poválečném Československu / The Jews of Czechoslovakia after WWIISušilová, Radana January 2011 (has links)
The thesis Jews in Czechoslovakia after WWII deals with the situation of the Czech and Moravian Jews after the WWII. It looks into the problems of the Jews liberated in the concentration camps and their process of repatriation and the problems, which were connected with their's adaptation to the society in Czechoslovakia. It follows the work of the Czech repatriation authorities and foreign Jewish organizations, which helped the Jews to adapt into the Czechoslovakia society. The thesis puts emphasizes on the differences between the behavior of the Jewish community in Prague and the Czech bureaus, which were obvious in the period of the return of the Jews to Czechoslovakia after the WWII. It also deals with the situation of the Jews from Carpathian Ruthenia and the Jews with German nationality, whose conditions where much more difficult.
