Bibliometri för utvärdering och forskarstöd : En intervjustudie med fokus på humaniora och samhällsvetenskap / Bibliometrics for evaluation and research support : An interview study with focus on the humanities and social sciences

Elvstam, Klara January 2021 (has links)
The aim of this study was to explore bibliometrics for evaluation and research support, with emphasis on humanities and social sciences. A literature review was combined with an empirical evaluation of qualitative interviews with librarians and bibliometricians from selected academic libraries. Dahler-Larsen’s theories on the evaluation society were applied, as well as Abbott’s theoretical models of the professionalization of librarians. The first part of the analysis consists of a qualitative content analysis of the interview material. The second part investigates the competencies of librarians and bibliometricians and the challenging aspects of bibliometric analysis for the humanities and social sciences, within Abbott’s framework. The majority of the studied universities used the Norwegian model for bibliometric evaluation of the humanities and social sciences. The respondents found the coverage in the citation databases to be lower for these fields, compared with others. Still, it remained the best available indicator. Furthermore, three of seven universities allocated no funds based on bibliometric analyses. The librarians and bibliometricians in the study mentioned the following competencies as important with regard to working with bibliometrics: insight into research and publication practises, knowledge about databases and systems, analytic thinking and ability to understand contexts as well as to handle different bibliometric indicators. Future perspectives for bibliometrics include the use of the new Swedish list, development of altmetrics as well as investment in open access and increasing digitalization of the society.

Biblioteks- och informationsvetenskap : en domänanalys av disciplinens intellektuella struktur utifrån paradigmen bibliotek respektive information / Library and information science : a domain analysis of the discipline and its intellectual structure from the perspective of the two paradigms library and information

Bolin, Irina, Smith, Jonathan January 2023 (has links)
The aim of this study was to conduct a domain analysis of the intellectual structure of Library and Information Science (LIS) from the perspective of Richard Rubins’ (2016) notion of the discipline as consisting of two separate paradigms: a library-paradigm and an information-paradigm. In accordance with the purpose of the study and the theoretical definition of the field of LIS, seven library science journals and five information science journals were identified as the basis of the study. Accordingly, bibliographic data from 5556 documents, published between the years of 2015-2022, were collected from the Web of Science. The library-paradigm revolves around the research areas of academic libraries, information literacy and library instruction. The information-paradigm is both founded on and driven by a technological incentive with strong interdisciplinary ties with computer science. In conclusion, the library-paradigm consists of research areas that to a greater extent are identified as information science research areas than the other way around. To some degree, the result shows that it is reasonable to adhere to the notion of a library-paradigm and an information-paradigm within LIS. However, the close ties between library science and information science implies that the discipline of LIS should not be considered to consist of the two paradigms. On the contrary the discipline should be regarded as consisting of library and information science and that these two spheres of the field should not be separated when conducting an analysis of its intellectual structure.

The meaning of qualitative calculations for a broadened canon concept

Lindberg,, Linnéa, Nikanorsson Fors, Ulrika January 2024 (has links)
The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is twofold. The first part is to create an understanding of the relevance of Swedish Nobel Prize laureates in literature for students at Swedish universities during the last 20 years. This is done with bibliometric calculations of published students’ theses from the years 2000–2023 found in the databases Diva and Uppsök. The second part is to use the empirical results to discuss a broadening of the literary canon concept. Here, Bourdieu’s concept of cultural capital is used. Two research questions are asked. When, where, how, and in what contexts are Swedish Nobel Prize laureates in literature present in students’ theses at Swedish universities during the years 2000–2023? How can the result from the empirical study be used in a canon discussion and in relation to a broadened canon concept? The results show that 164 relevant theses were written during this time, at 23 different universities and in 18 different subjects. The laureates and their works are both studied in their own right and used as tools in other investigations. For half of the laureates, a local connection is found between their home regions and the geographical location of the universities where the theses were written. The wide range of subjects shows that the laureates and their works are significant well outside the traditional area of literature. This supports a possible broadening of the canon concept from being only national and literary to also including regional aspects and uses in other subject areas as well.

Fahlén, Daniel January 2015 (has links)
Interdisciplinarity is a common goal within specialized interdisciplinary organizations as well as within the academic world as a whole. Interdisciplinary research is connected with values such as a more market oriented approach, new ways of using theories and methods and a more cost efficient use of expensive research equipment. But few studies actually measure the development of organized interdisciplinary research over time. The purpose of this paper is to examine the potential effects of organizational changes in research institu- tions whose purpose is to promote interdisciplinary research collaborations.. Using a longitudinal case study this essay measures the attempts of a Norwegian music therapy research organisation to actively induce interdisciplinary research over a period of eight years. An important part of the study is also to try common quantitative operationalizations of different types of interdisciplinarity with in a small case study. Bibliometric methods are used to visualize relations between researchers. Important results include findings of increased interdisciplinary activity within the new organisation thus proving the possibility to create interdisciplinary conditions thru active organisational changes. The essay also show that operationalizations used in quantitative studies may need to be adapted to specific conditions in order to effectively measure interdisciplinary relations between researchers. As with all case studies the results of this essay needs to be tested and verified in further studies.

On the Use of Bibliometrics for Domain Analysis : A study of the Academic Field of Political Science in Europe / Om bibliometrins tillämpbarhet inom domänanalysen : En studie av det akademiska statsvetenskapliga fältet i Europa

Bjurström, Peter January 2011 (has links)
The academic field of political science in Europe is studied in this thesis which examines the application of bibliometrics for domain analysis. It takes its point of departure in the domain analytic approach outlined by Birger Hjørland and Hanne Albrechtsen, which claims the study of domains as central for information specialists to be able to identify information needs in their fields of practice. Three features of the domain were studied by the use of bibliometric methods. Data was extracted from the Web of Science. Impact Factor was used to select 50 journals from each of the years 1999, 2004 and 2009. Only items published by authors with European addresses were included. Co-word analysis was used to study topics within the discipline and several kinds of citation analyses were conducted to examine citation patterns of the domain. Lastly core journals, authors and works were identified by the use of citation analysis and co-citation maps were drawn for the analyses.Several subfields within the domain, as well as some differences in citation patterns of the subfields, were possible to distinguish. The domain showed to be multifaceted, yet specific European research areas were identified. Some significant changes of the citation patterns were apparent between 1999 and 2009. In 2009 there were more references per article, journal articles were cited to a higher degree, relatively older publications were cited to a greater extent and the most cited journals received a larger share of the total amount of citations. The existence of a specific European domain within political science is discussed as well as the diverse characteristics of the subfields and their implications for the bibliometric methods. Finally suggestions are presented of how bibliometrics can be used for domain analysis within library and information science as well as by information service institutions. This paper is a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information Science.

Bibliometrisk kartläggning av det idrottspsykologiska fältet / Mapping the field of sport and exercise psychology : A bibliometric study

Lindahl, Jonas January 2011 (has links)
Objectives: The aim in this thesis has been to generate information relevant for strategic positioning and future evaluations within the scientific field of sport and exercise psychology. This has been done by request, and in collaboration with The Group of Sport and Exercise Psychology at the Institution of Psychology at the University of Umeå. Research questions:  (1) How does the cognitive structure within the field of sport and exercise psychology take shape with respect to research topics in current sport-psychological research, i.e. the research front? (2) How does the social structure within the field of sport and exercise psychology take shape with respect to formal scientific collaboration? Data: 879 articles published between 2008-2011 were used in this study. The population of articles were collected from a set of 5 core journals: International Journal of Sport Psychology, Journal of Applied Sport Psychology, Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology, The Sport Psychologist, Psychology of Sport and Exercise. The original set was expanded by collecting relevant sport psychology articles from Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports and Journal of Sports Sciences. Methods: (1) The bibliometric indicator normalized bibliographic coupling combined with hierarchical agglomerative cluster analysis was used for mapping the research front. With this approach articles are basically clustered with respect to shared refererences, which in this context is understood as a measure of topical similarity. (2)  For the mapping of social structures a collaboration analysis was performed by extracting and visualizing social networks based on the bibliometric indicator coauthorship.     Results: (1) Identification and classification of 80 clusters based on topical similarity in collaboration with a subject expert. (2) Providing a map of formal scientific collaborations between countries based on coauthorship. (3) Providing a map of social networks based on coauthorships between individual researchers. (4) Identification and contextualization of central researchers based on production within the visualized coauthor network. The publications of each researcher were traced to corresponding clusters in the research front to gain information about in which subject areas and topics these central researchers publish. (5) Identification of research groups with high coauthor values, i.e. high intensity in their formal collaboration. Furthermore the publications from these groups were connected to corresponding clusters, i.e. giving information about in which subject areas and topics these groups publish.

Power to the people : Diffusion of renewable electricityin rural areas of developing countries

Sriwannawit, Pranpreya January 2015 (has links)
Nearly all the 1.3 billion people in the world with no electricity access live in developing countries. On the one hand, electricity is a basic need. On the other hand, the environment should not be further damaged. Thus, sustainable electricity in developing countries is clearly needed. The aim of this dissertation is to analyse the mechanism of the diffusion and adoption of renewable electricity with particular focus on rural electrification among low-income inhabitants in developing countries. The dissertation is comprised of a cover essay and six appended papers with a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods based on several means of data collection. The first paper describes diffusion theory through a novel bibliometric tool. This novel method provides an overview, structure, and explanation of a large research area; complements a traditional literature review; and can be applied to any knowledge field. Here, the structure of the recent development of diffusion research, together with its application, are presented. With a specific focus on rural electrification among low-income inhabitants in developing countries, the diffusion framework is empirically applied with complementary concepts in the second, third, and fourth papers, based on three different cases. One case study investigates the adoption of electricity among rural inhabitants in Uganda and shows that a foreign company can be an important player in the rural electrification effort. Another case study addresses a large dissemination of photovoltaic systems provided by a local firm in Bangladesh and reveals that the diffusion of renewable energy can be effectively undertaken by a private local firm, rather than waiting for full government support or large multi-national corporations. The other case study discusses a small-scale diffusion of photovoltaic systems in a remote region in Thailand and presents an extreme case where full government support is necessary. In addition, through a systematic literature review, the barriers to adoption of photovoltaic systems are identified in the fifth paper, highlighting several remaining challenges. In the last paper, issues related to the transition to using photovoltaic systems in off-grid communities are discussed. The diffusion mechanism of renewable electricity has been shown to be a highly complicated process, having several unforeseeable and context-specific factors. A technology with superior qualities does not diffuse by itself but requires tremendous effort and close collaboration on the part of stakeholders. There are complex relations, on the one hand, between technology and society and, on the other hand, between technology providers and adopters. No single, fast, or straightforward remedy can address the complex nature of diffusion of renewable electricity in rural communities. Therefore, understanding the local context is highly important, indicating the need for empirical investigation. This dissertation offers several contributions concerning methodological, theoretical, empirical, managerial and policy. It also provides implications that may be relevant for actors who attempt to introduce, disseminate, and manage new energy technologies in rural communities. / <p>QC 20150518</p>

När filologerna refererar : En referensanalys av svenska doktorsavhandlingar i ämnet latin / When Philologists cite : A Citation Analysis of Swedish Doctoral Dissertations in the Subject Field of Latin

Ramstedt, Erik January 2018 (has links)
This study presents a citation analysis of 20 doctoral dissertations in the subject field of Latin which is part of the broader field of classical philology. The dissertations were all written at Swedish universities and were published during two measurement periods between 1979-2017. The aim of the study is to provide a basis for decision-making for librarians who are responsible for collections of books and journals on classical philology at Swedish university libraries. The study takes as its starting point and theoretical background a citation analysis made by Gregory A. Crawford and published in an article in 2013. That citation analysis was made with a philological journal as empirical object and found a remarkable stability over time in citation practices by scholars involved in classical philology especially regarding the language, age and type of material cited. With Crawfords results as background this present study finds similar patterns of stability in citation practices in the Swedish dissertations analysed. The conclusion of this study is that Swedish university libraries should retain their older books on classical philology as well as continue to develop their collections with books as well as journals written in the English, German, French, and Italian languages. This is a two years master´s thesis in Library and Information Science.

Kiš, Kish or Kiški? : A Bibliometrics study of the domain Assyriology / Kiš, Kish eller Kiški? : En bibliometrisk studie av domänen assyriologi

Larsson, Olivia January 2021 (has links)
This thesis aims to examine how the domain Assyriology can be analyzed with bibliometrics. It uses the domain analytic perspective by Birger Hjørland and Hanne Albrechtsen. The metadata was collected through the Web of Science and the dataset covers the years 2016-2020 from the journals Akkadica, Journal of Near Eastern Studies, Ancient Near Eastern studies, Journal of Ancient Near Eastern Religions and Zeitschrift für Assyriologie und Vorderasiatische Archäologie. The domain was studied by analyzing citations, the documents, languages, place of publication, the age of references and the authors by visualizing patterns in figures and tables. Co-authorship analysis was used to display collaboration between countries. The content was analyzed with co-citation analysis of references and co-word analysis of title words to visualize the knowledge structures within the domain. The study found that Co-word analysis did give a general idea of different knowledge patterns but there were few clear structures. The co-citation analysis was found to reveal more clear structures though the references had a low citation rate and so might not be representative of the whole domain. It was found to be effective to use tables and figures to visualize certain aspects and patterns within the domain. In conclusion, bibliometrics was found to be effective to gain knowledge about the domain Assyriology. This is a two years master's thesis in Library and Information Science. Metadatan har samlats in från Web of Science och datasetet består material från tidsperioden 2016-2020 från tidskrifterna AkkAncient Near Eastern studies, adica, Journal of Near Eastern Studies, Journal of Ancient Near Eastern Religions and Zeitschrift für Assyriologie und Vorderasiatische Archäologie.
