What a Drag!: Ethnography, Performance and Female Impersonation by Fernando Antonio de Paula Passos examines the performative presence of cross-dressed men in Salvador’s public scenes: cross-dressing as the opportunity for the deconstruction of gender polarities. It consists of an approach that blends self-reflexive ethnography with issues of female impersonation and cross-dressing in order to study the multiplicity of their performances, their re-signification, their relatively recent arrival in the context of revisionist perspectives and subject matters in the academic field of the performing arts in Brazil. Incorporating concepts of auto-ethnography and theoretical transvestism, it brings together writing and performance in what is now known as performative writing, as it struggles to uncover what the “being” of performance is all about. In dealing with the ontology of performance as representation without reproduction, it is particularly focused on issues of disappearance. It is also aware that writing about the undocumentable event of the performance alters that same event. It also deals with: traces of disappearance, the presence of the body in performance, cross-dressing, camp, alterity, feminine choreography, Global Queerscapes, drag epistemology, nation, surrealism, pastoral, allegory, political resistance and Carmen Miranda, as the epitome of inter/national camp.

Chronopathie. La crise mémorielle et ses lois dans l'Espagne contemporaine de 1931 à nos jours / The Memory Crisis and its Laws in Spain from 1931 to Nowadays

Over the past decade, the question of Spanish historical memory has been debated a lot. Whereas the memory of the Spanish Civil War’s defeated had been kept silenced for years, nowadays, the story of direct witnesses – often told by themselves or their heirs – has become inevitable from a historical, cultural and political point of view (see the “historical memory” Act). Many best-selling books and box-office hit films dealing with this painful historical period have contributed to generalise some neglected events which had not always been properly transmitted to the younger generations. However, the memorial activism of various individuals is not unanimously accepted. Indeed, some people consider that such a revival of a painful past might pose a threat to a national harmony which was not easy to obtain. Others, belonging to the national fraction, feel directly accused by the late “triumph” of yesterday’s defeated. The frequent parallel drawn between the Civil War and a would-be fight of the “goods” against the “evils”, has fuelled a partisan debate at the expense of historical truth. The debate on historical memory has become so serious that some analysts do wonder if the Civil War is over or not. The evolution of historiography since 1931 is real, but it should not be explained exclusively by the biased opposition of the heirs of both camps. In fact, we have to take into account deeper reasons at the roots of the problem. The Spanish case cannot be dissociated from a European context, even if it has to be explained by its own particular reasons which affect many other knowledge domains.

Reinvestigating the Wreck of the Sixteenth Century Portuguese Galleon São João: A Historical Archaeological Perspective

Burger, Elizabeth 10 September 2004 (has links)
The Portuguese galleon, the São João, is one of the greatest enigmas in South African maritime history, not only because so little is known about its cargo, passengers and crew, but also because the location of the wreck has puzzled researchers from the early 20th century until the present. The aim of the Port Edward Project 2001-2003 was to assess both documentary and physical material pertaining to the wreck, to throw more light on the location of the wreck site and survivor camp because this ship is an important part of South Africa’s maritime history as it was the first cargo ship wrecked along the country’s coastline. Many researchers believe it was one of the most richly laden ships to have left India since it was discovered. To begin with all available sources containing reference to the São João and the events surrounding its wrecking were investigated. This established a historical archaeological standard for dating and identification of Portuguese shipwrecks along the South African coast. A chronological examination of the extent of documentary sources resulted in an archaeological underwater and land survey in the area where the greatest concentrations of artefacts are still found today. This geographic area was within a defined zone within the municipal area of Port Shepston. Investigations were limited to a stretch of coast and adjacent inland area between the town of Port Edward, more specifically Tragedy Hill, and the Kuboboyi River. The archaeological material investigated: includes: Chinese porcelain shards, cowrie shells, cornelian beads, pepper and cannons. To prevent reiterating previous investigator’s research a survey was conducted to determine what scientific research has been done on the archaeological material. The actual location of the campsite has not been indisputably determined. It became evident that some research has been done to identify this important site but always only up to a certain point where some uncertainty still remains. This uncertainty is the result of certain factors. Firstly, Tim Maggs only positively identified the wreck site in the early 1980’s. Secondly, great amounts of agricultural activity have been reported in the area and thirdly the survivors only camped for twelve days, which limits the possibility of finding any material. In order to assist in locating this elusive site, the descriptions and details of other Portuguese campsites were investigated. From this it was possible to construct a virtual picture of the survivor camp by comparing the survivor’s account and the known characteristics of Portuguese survivor camps with the artefacts found and geography of the Port Edward area. The chronological examination of documentary sources, the comparison of other Portuguese survivor campsites, the artefacts found in Port Edward and the geography of the area led to the following conclusions: it can be said with a reasonable amount of certainty that the site in Port Edward is that of the São João. A site which demonstrates Portuguese campsite characteristics, where great concentrations of pepper have been found, was identified. It has been established that the partnership with historical documentation and archaeology gives this project the option of taking the investigations further. The virtual scenario assists in reducing the possibilities and refining the focus as opposed to merely terminating the search. It is recommended that specialized equipment be used for future underwater research since the sea conditions are harsh and dangerous. Tough the possible location of the survivor camp was established further excavations might reveal more about the construction of the camp. / Dissertation (MA (cultural history))--University of Pretoria, 2005. / Historical and Heritage Studies / unrestricted

Lallier-Roussin, Laurence 12 1900 (has links)
This study examines asylum seekers’ practices within medical humanitarian structures on Lesvos island, Greece. Maintained inside the border-zone constituted by the island, asylum seekers live in Moria camp, which is known for its extremely bad living conditions. In the context of their asylum process, they undergo a medical procedure, the vulnerability assessment, the result of which influences their trajectories. As part of an ethnographic fieldwork conducted on the island in the summer of 2018, I carried out observing participation as an interpreter in a humanitarian clinic, a space where volunteer doctors and asylum seekers negotiate the power attributed to the vulnerability assessment. This study analyses the practices of asylum seekers through the concept of circumscribed agency, which effects are unpredictable. I first show that asylum seekers set up strategies to negotiate the inhuman situation in which they find themselves, as well as to obtain recognition. Their strategies are structured around a reappropriation of the logics of the humanitarian device, notably the stereotypes assigned to refugees. The second part extensively examines an element of these strategies central to the care interactions taking place in the humanitarian clinic: the medical documents. I show that these documents act as a flexible technology and that their function is reconfigured by asylum seekers’ practices, who use them as resources and proofs. Finally, I highlight the different ways in which volunteer doctors react to these practices, along with their consequences on access to medical care. These elements provide a nuanced description of the effects of the humanitarian device established at Europe’s borders following the 2015 refugee crisis.

Les stations balnéaires britanniques : de la prospérité au déclin : le cas de Skegness sur la côte du Lincolnshire / British seaside resorts : from prosperity to decline : a case study of Skegness on the Lincolnshire coast

Chamekh, Mohamed 09 June 2017 (has links)
This thesis is a study of the seaside resort of Skegness and the working class seaside holiday. It validates the onset of decline on British seaside resorts, but confirms the plurality of experiences and the varieties of the strategies of regeneration and survival. The first two parts of the thesis analyse the growth of the seaside holiday as an alternative to old leisure and the growth of Skegness as a seaside resort within the dynamics of changing leisure and changing socio-economic conditions of workers. A second theme, related to the growth of the Skegness resort, which is a major thrust of this thesis, is an analysis of the way Skegness was promoted as a seaside resort. It is argued in this context that the railway, in addition to bringing holidaymakers to the resort, played a pivotal role in the promotion of the resort, especially through posters and to a lesser extent newspaper publicity. The study of promotional materials seeks also to demonstrate the changes in the resort image and social tone from the early years of the resort development until the late twentieth century. This study also addresses the decline of Skegness as a domestic holiday destination. It argues that holidays abroad had a detrimental effect on British seaside resorts in addition to the homegrown factors like the deteriorating resort infrastructure and the poor marketing strategies. Against this background of decline, it is shown that Skegness, despite the alarming deprivation indicators, managed to a certain extent to survive as a working class family destination.

Frank O'Hara & the city : situationist psychogeography, postwar poetics, & capitalist culture.

Shweiry, Zein 06 1900 (has links)
This dissertation adopts a fresh interdisciplinary perspective on reading the postwar urban poems of New York School poet Frank O’Hara. Through French Situationist philosophy, and particularly the writings of Guy Debord, the study explores the spatial and textual relations of O’Hara’s urban and cultural representations in postwar poetry. With the help of psychogeography and its “anti-techniques” of détournement and dérive, the research focuses on O’Hara’s uses of appropriation in constructing his urban assemblages. The dissertation considers postwar poems from The Collected Poems of Frank O’Hara and offers Situationist readings and understandings of O’Hara’s modernist (urban and cultural) space. The choice of specific poems highlights O’Hara’s unequivocal inspiration by French poetry and focuses on their urbane, experimental and erotic aspects. The first two chapters propose ways in decoding psychogeographical approaches in poetic (de)composition for reading O’Hara’s poems, while the third delves into O’Hara’s uses of camp in dialogue with Situationist politics that highlight not only the capitalist and the cultural, but also the erotic and the queer.

Community-driven initiatives to relieve poverty and inequality : case study of Lubisini, Elundini Local Municipality, Eastern Cape, South Africa

Ralarala, Thembisile 07 1900 (has links)
The eradication of poverty and the reduction of inequality remains one of the biggest global challenges in the 21st Century. In the last two decades the democraticg overnment of South Africa still grapple with rising levels of poverty and inequality. The aim of this research was to facilitate a roots-driven community intervention that would allow the community members from the rural village of Lubisini (Eastern Cape, South Africa) to create opportunities that will help reduce their inherent levels of poverty and inequality. In order to achieve this 132 community members were workshopped through a community asset mapping programme (CAMP) to identify their inherent human, social, environmental assets, they were then assisted to develop ideas for small businesses, their own measures of success in overcoming poverty and inequality and the improvement in their own quality of life. The CAMP process is documented, and the intervention was followed by monitoring and evaluation of challenges and successes over an 18 month period. The research concluded with various recommendations that will enable rural communities to drive their own indicators of successful sustainable development. / Geography / M. Sc. (Geography)

LE RELAZIONI STRATEGICHE TRA STATI UNITI ED EGITTO NEGLI ANNI DI SADAT E MUBARAK: UNA PROSPETTIVA OCCIDENTALE / LE RELAZIONI STRATEGICHE TRA STATI UNITI ED EGITTO NEGLI ANNI DI SADAT E MUBARAK: UNA PROSPETTIVA OCCIDENTALE / THE STRATEGIC RELATIONS BETWEEN UNITED STATES AND EGYPT IN THE YEARS OF SADAT AND MUBARAK: A WESTERN PERSPECTIVE

DENTICE, GIUSEPPE 21 April 2020 (has links)
The thesis analyses the evolution and impact of U.S.-Egypt relations under the Sadat and Mubarak’s tenure in terms of geopolitical and strategic attitudes through a historical-diachronic perspective. Although it has been characterized for decades by a marked reciprocity in terms of local and (trans-)regional dynamics, for about twenty years this link has been experiencing a particular moment of reconsideration due to the presence of several factors that have limited its overall significance. The bilateral relationship needs new foundations and objectives. In fact, the thesis argues that the Camp David agreements, the beating heart of the common strategies of the United States and Egypt, as well as the political core of several dynamics (mostly in security dimension) between the Americans, Egyptians and Israelis, it is the key element to understand the interconnection between Egyptian domestic state and its regional state autonomy. In this respect, the thesis highlights these factors characterizing the Egyptian foreign policy in connection, even and not only, with United States and Israel, as enabling factors both in the national political developments and the evolution in the Arab stage, within a wider geo-political and strategic regional and international panorama. In conclusion, this work aim to bring out the tactical nature of the bilateral relationship between Egypt and the United States, which was heavily influenced by the pursuit of a different perception of national interest. Therefore, the biggest challenge between Washington and Cairo consists in managing a much less special and complex relationship than in the recent past, which essentially sees the overcoming of Camp David, while maintaining the stability of the region as a cornerstone on both sides.
