Abstract: Encampment time (Tempo de acampamento) is a social code within the world of land occupation. Besides being a type of chronologic measurement, it also defines distinction and status; it is a concept that organizes and orders social relations. Furthermore, in order to obtain a piece of land, tempo de acampamento is a prerequisite for those who take part in the Landless Movement occupations and encampments, for the leaders of the organizations that promote land occupation as well as for the authorities who manage land expropriation, thus creating a social formula that is understood and shared by all who take part in this particular social world of land occupation. However, the expression tempo de acampamento may carry different meanings depending on one's context, situation and condition, as well as on the roles played by each individual in this particular social world. Therefore, even though tempo de acampamento is sometimes expressed through other native terms - such as tempo de barraco, tempo de luta, and tempo de reforma -, each one of these terms encompasses a complex diversity of meanings, actions and situations. / Doutorado / Doutor em Antropologia Social

The following decades, these movements influenced the workers from neighboring municipalities as in Itapirapuã, and so these landless workers began to organize with the help of mediators such as the MST (Landless Workers' Movement), CPT (Land Pastoral Commission) of the Diocese of Goiás and other non-institutional agents. When analyzing the performance of landless workers in the struggle undertaken by the land of conquest in the settlement, it is intended to understand the construction of a peasant territory, from the camp phase until the stage of execution of the settlement. Construction on this peasant territory with respect to the appropriation and domain of a socially shared space connected the way people use it, the organized and attribute meanings to the place. This case has peculiarities, as the action of the landowner, who also acted as "mediator", putting property available for expropriation with interest for traders to capitalize and to remain as large landowner in another region. This fact became common in the 1990s, in which the owner of large estates has a godfather relationship with the workers have come to understand the expropriation as a lucrative business. So being the research analysis showed the importance of the establishment of such peasant territorial unit, which turned an unproductive area of large estates in a living territory, revealing the economic, social and political importance of this settlement, as well as significant improvement in families' quality of life settled.

From the work of the writer Boris Pahor, Necropolis, it addresses the question of the testimony and is made research in the narration of the traumatic experience, the malaise of traditional models of representation. Through an interdisciplinary reading and considering the arts and critical reflections of thinkers such as: Jacques Derrida, Georges Didi-Huberman, Emmanuel Levinas, Walter Benjamin, inter alia, it is proposed an encounter that will allow that one more voice transmits others lines at the opening of thought to the arts, with the intention to understand the implications and tensions to narrate the trauma, between its impossibility and its necessity. For the purpose to establish dialogues and translations between thresholds of the image and literature, that allows to deepen the questions proposed, it addresses the work of the photographer Evgen Bavcar, from the exhibition titled: Une lumiere dificile, dedicated to his meeting with Boris Pahor and the sober picture of horror around the traces of the concentration camp Natzweiler-Struthof. So in front of the catastrophe's representation, it revalued book elements of the image and the magnetic dimensions of written. Finally, according to the proposals of some contemporary Colombian artists, it comes to thinking about the political and the poetic witness of violence, because the thought cannot be indifferent to the remains, ruins, traces, memories resistance, allowing happen traits, installations, requesting to learn to feel and to think otherwise, take on the fragility of the bodies exposed to excessive realities, disasters that seem impossible, but they are real / Mestrado / Teoria e Critica Literaria / Mestra em Teoria e História Literária

Exploring relocation experiences of refugees and asylum seekers in Port Elizabeth

Sibula, Nontutuzelo Rosemary January 2009 (has links)
Large numbers of migrants enter South Africa legally and illegally in search of a better life, personal safety and security (Pretorius, 2004:1). The research study explored and described experiences of refugees and asylum seekers in the host country, the challenges they encountered in the process of integration regarding families in their country of origin and their “new” families in the host country, the strategies they employed to get recognition even if it led to being involved in fraudulent activities. The research has also explored the impact of laws in the lives of refugees and asylum seekers for example the Refugee Act (Act 130 of 1998), the Immigration Act (Act 13 of 2002), the 1969 OAU Convention and the 1951 United Nations Convention. A qualitative research approach was used to frame the study, which employed an exploratory, descriptive and contextual research design so as to understand challenges experienced by refugees and asylum seekers. The sample for the study was a purposively selected sample recruited using the snowball sampling technique. As a means of collecting data semi-structured interviews were utilized. The eight steps as stipulated by Tesch (in Creswell, 1994) were used to analyse data. To ensure trustworthiness the four criteria as suggested by Guba (in Krefting, 1991) were applied, namely truth-value, applicability, consistency and neutrality. The findings and recommendations are made available by means of a research report The research findings were centered on the following themes: (1) Refugees and asylum seekers articulate a range of reasons behind the decision to leave their home country. (2) Refugees and asylum seekers express negative experiences regarding leaving their country of origin. (3) Refugees and asylum seekers experience a range of feelings as they enter the host country (4) Refugees and asylum seekers report that they and their families experience a number of challenges as a result of relocation (5) Refugees and asylum seekers employ negative and positive strategies to cope with challenges of relocation (6) Suggestions made by refugees and asylum seekers concerning the involvement of Social Workers (7) Suggestions made by refugees/asylum seekers to Home Affairs in terms of improving services to refugees and asylum seekers Substance findings: the results emerged from the data collected through the themes and sub-themes identified during data analysis. Conclusions and recommendations: Based on the findings conclusions were drawn and recommendations proposed from the findings.

The practical applications of solid waste management for base camps during peacekeeping operations in Africa

Durant, Spencer 18 June 2013 (has links)
While it has become the United Nations (UN) responsibility to peacekeep the world’s most conflict ridden countries, so too has their impact on the physical environment increased. Large numbers of personnel require equally vast amount of logistical requirements and equipment for the sustainment of operations. Base camps are the focal points from which operations are managed in the field. The ability of peacekeeping base camps to handle their solid waste, both on-site and off-site in low capacity environments, has gained greater attention as environmental concerns have increased globally. Interviews conducted with the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) (acting as a current Troop Contributing Country (TCC) to the United Nations (UN) peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo) determined the problems facing appropriate solid waste collection, treatment and disposal methods utilized in and outside peacekeeping base camps and their specific limitations. It was found that there was inefficient monitoring and follow up processes involved with solid waste contracting providers; that there is a need for the inclusion of focused solutions during the operational planning stages; and, there is a deficiency in placed responsibility both from within a TCC and between the UN as to how and whom should manage the solid waste emanating from within base camps. This MA dissertation achieved the understanding that there must be greater focus placed on the delineation of responsibility for the management of solid waste within base camps in the documents that initially structure operations between TCCs, the UN and host nations, thereby limiting the impact on the physical environment from peacekeeping to the furthest extent possible. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / Geography, Geoinformatics and Meteorology / MA / Unrestricted

The Incentive to Kill: An Examination of the Motivations for German Perpetrators During World War II

Manikowski, Agathe January 2011 (has links)
Why do ordinary individuals participate in mass violence perpetrated against civilians? That is the question I will attempt to answer in the following paper. I consider these men ordinary to the extent that the majority was not socially deviant. Looking at the case of Nazi Germany, two groups stand out as good case studies: the SS Einsatzgruppen and the SS cadres in the Death camps. The following analysis will focus on the motivations of these men to commit mass murder. I argue for a causal sequence of action, beginning with the onset of Nazi ideology, further followed by the dehumanization of the victim and the brutalization of the perpetrator. I will demonstrate how the ideology present during German interwar society influenced these men into participation. Dehumanization and brutalization are complimentary factors that push these men into action.

Journeying to the Father: Researching Faith and Identity in a Contemporary Catholic Youth Movement in Canada

Gareau, Paul January 2016 (has links)
The New Evangelization (NE) is a recent development in the Catholic Church. It seeks to preserve, restore, and re-invigorate Catholic religious identity in the face of what it perceives to be a dominance of secular values. This proselytization program instigates personal religiosity among adherents in the hopes of forming an evangelical Catholic identity. However, little is known of the processes and discourses of Catholic evangelization, especially among young people in Canada. This thesis responds to the main question: How are young people engaging and interpreting evangelical modes of religious and socio-political identity, and integrating or negotiating this worldview within a pluralist Canadian society? This research, therefore, focuses on an annual summer Catholic youth conference called Journey to the Father as a case study that sheds light on the dissemination of Catholic perspectives, the development of a personal and charismatic religious experience, and the instigation of an evangelical impetus in young Catholic participants. Using participant observation and semi-structured interviews with both the adult organizers (ages 18 and older) and young participants (ages 13–18) in Journey to the Father, this research examines the processes of identity formation through affective and experiential religiosity, and the formulation of a minority identity politics among young Catholics within a diverse Canada. It also takes into account the correlation between an evangelical Catholic worldview and young people, spelling out different reflections on religion and society, experience and agency. This research emphasizes how young people negotiate (i.e. appropriate or negate) evangelical Catholic values and charismatic religious experience when forming their social, political, and religious identities, in order to gain an understanding of their socio-political position within a diverse Canadian society.

The State of Knowledge on Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Depression and Anxiety Among Refugee Women in Africa: A Scoping Review

Workneh, Aklile Fikre January 2017 (has links)
With over 65.3 million people of concern under the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees mandate, the world is facing its biggest humanitarian crisis since the Second World War. The World Health Organization states that war and disasters have a large impact on a person’s mental health and psychosocial wellbeing, estimating that 5-10% of people who have experienced emergency situations suffer from mental health related problems. For refugee women in particular, research suggests that they have higher instances of mental health problems than other refugees which include depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, and anxiety. Using a scoping review methodology, this thesis examines the prevalence of refugee women’s mental health problems in the African context. It examines the experiences of these women living in African camps and the availability and accessibility of mental health services during their residency. Upon completion of the scoping review, the literature reveals that there is a high occurrence of mental health problems among refugee women residing in African camps. Furthermore, with relation to services it was found that varied mental health services are present but lack qualified personnel. Lastly, four themes emerged regarding refugee women’s experiences: violence, family life and losses, poor quality of life, and coping mechanisms.

Optimalizační model využitelný při plánování dětských táborů / Optimizing the distribution of participants in summer camps

Hlavenka, Vojtěch January 2016 (has links)
The aim of the thesis is the mathematical model, which is capable to divide participants of large summer camps into groups, according to specific limitations. The first part describes the economics model and all valid conditions. The second part is devoted to theoretical description. There are mentioned the basics of mathematical programming and the basic of working with Excel and VBA. The thesis describes only actually used methods. The following third part shows the final form of the model. So the reader doesn´t have to go through the whole process, described in the fourth part. There is a model testing in the fourth part, especially with the help of the Excel Solver. The problems are sold immediately. That is the reason why the fifth part can be used for implementation of working environment, which allows the end user to run the model without any significant knowledge of the issue. The app uses the wide possibilities of VBA. The sixth part briefly describes other add-ins, that are able to solve mathematical problem. The conclusion summarizes all the previous parts and offeres solution, that would be used in real application of the thesis.

Lighting the Fire : Empowering Youth Towards Sustainability in Nature Camps

Drossart, Kilia, Heckman, Stéphanie Alexandra, Tate Wistreich, Brendan January 2017 (has links)
The scale of the sustainability crisis is mounting exponentially as human development pushes the socio-ecological system closer to its limits. 12 to 18 year olds, who are in a formative life stage, are critical stakeholders in the success of addressing this sustainability challenge. This study explores the role of nature camps as powerful platforms for empowering young people towards sustainability. It begins by creating a conceptual framework to identify, define and design youth empowerment towards sustainability (YES). This is then used to identify relevant current practices and activities in the field through qualitative interviews with nature camp practitioners. A focus group is held to trial the YES Framework and collect suggestions for designing camps. Through thematic analysis, five key themes are distilled which link outcomes of camps to addressing specific sustainability issues. The study concludes that nature camps already empower young people towards sustainability, though neither explicitly nor strategically. Based on these findings we see an excellent opportunity to bring together existing knowledge from the field, combined with the YES Framework, to support the creation of nature camps which can empower new generations of young people to engage in strategic sustainable development.
