Assessment of potential and impacts of afforestation in the Letaba catchment, Limpopo Province, South Africa

Mkwalo, Andile Churchill 07 1900 (has links)
The plantation forestry is economically a very important industry in South Africa because it promotes the upliftment of many rural South African communities. However, afforestation has significant impacts on water use and biodiversity in a catchment. Thus, understanding the effects of afforestation on water resources at the catchment level is fundamental for optimal water resource allocation, long-term sustainable use, development and conservation. Much of the Limpopo Province is climatically and physiographically suitable for plantation forestry but it only contains approximately 4.7 % of the total existing plantation area in South Africa. For example, the size of the Letaba Catchment of the Limpopo Province is 13 669 km² but only approximately 484 km² of it is currently afforested. This study aims to identify potential areas for further afforestation in the Letaba Catchment using the Water Resources Modelling Platform (WReMP) model to determine if afforestation can be expanded here to promote development in South Africa‟s poorest Province. / Geography / M. An evaluation of the cumulative surface water pollution within the consolidated main reef area, Roodepoort, South Africa

Muruven, Dean Nalandhren 08 1900 (has links)
Surface water pollution is prevalent in numerous areas of central Roodepoort mainly due to gold mining activities. The surface water quality for the Bosmontspruit, Russell’s Stream and the New Canada Dam was assessed from October 2010 to March 2011. Physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the water were determined for 8 monitoring points and the results obtained were compared with the In-stream water quality guidelines for the Klip River catchment and the South African Water Quality Guidelines. A trend noticed throughout the sampling period was the non-compliance in the levels of total dissolved solids (TDS) and dissolved oxygen. The results indicated that concentrations of iron, aluminium, nickel, manganese and potassium were above the limit across the Bosmontspruit and Russell’s stream. There was also significant evidence of excessive faecal coliform and ammonium pollution in the Bosmontspruit. During the monitoring period it was noted that water from these streams were utilised for crop irrigation, bathing, livestock and human consumption and may pose a health hazard due to poor water quality. / Environmental Sciences / M.Sc. Föroreningsmängder och koncentrationer i dagvattendammars sediment : påverkan från omgivande markanvändning, en studie i Gävle / Contaminant amounts and concentrations in sediment of stormwater ponds : impact from surrounding landuse, a study in Gävle

Lignell, Moa January 2019 (has links)
This thesis addresses how human activities in the catchment area could influence the contaminant concentrations and amounts of contaminants in the sediments of stormwater ponds. Sediment sampling was done in April 2019. The storm water ponds had different land uses: industrial, residential (detached area) and two land uses of traffic with different intensities; “traffic by Hamnleden” (7000 cars/day) and “traffic by Västerbacken” (2000 cars/day). Samples were taken with a Russian corer and sediment depth was measured to quantify sediment volume. Samples were sent to laboratory for analysis of metals, phosphorus, aliphatics, aromatics and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons [PAH]. The stormwater pond with industry as land use had the highest concentration of contaminants in the sediment, followed by residential area – traffic by Hamnleden – traffic by Västerbacken. The results of this study showed that the land use concentrations of contaminants were all similar, and the patterns of concentration in the graphic figures were similar. The results could be explained by the narrow geographic area in which the three storm water ponds are situated. They could be affected by the same atmospheric downfall which could even out the concentrations. It was not expected that the residential area would have one of the highest concentrations in the sediment. This could be explained by the high content of organic matter, as some contaminants create strong chemical bonding with organic matter. Bigger differences were seen for the amounts of contaminants in the sediments and the comparative figure “fixated amount of contaminant per year”. The land use industry had the highest amount of contaminants followed by traffic by Hamnleden – traffic by Västerbacken – residential area. This is probably due to differences in particle quota in the storm water coming from the land uses. Calculations were done for the amount of transported contaminants in stormwater, via the watershed management tool and model StormTac. The calculated transportation of contaminants resulted in total amounts of contaminants, meaning both dissolved and particulate fractions. The calculations from StormTac were compared with the comparative figure “fixated amount of contaminant per year” for the land use residential area, and the amounts were significantly higher for the calculated transportation. This could partly be explained by comparing total amounts with particulate amounts. A conclusion of this report is that land use affects the amounts of contaminants and sediment volume in the studied storm water ponds, rather than the concentrations.

Canton, Mathieu 09 December 2009 (has links)
The anthropized watersheds shift quickly and may disturb the ecosystems. Coastal ecosystems and coastal lagoons are highly sensitive to the amount and the quality of biogenic material originating from continents. The Arcachon lagoon (France South West) raises continental waters originating from a watershed of 3,000 km2 . Pine forestry cover the main surface area of the watershed since 150 years. Cornfields are appeared since 1970 and quickly increase. A solid waste disposal has been created near the littoral. The purpose of this PhD is to assess the global cycle of biogenic materials through the riverine and estuarine continuum. Land-use analyze by GIS, two years of monitoring and some studies of flood events and river continuum have permit to assess the flux of biogenic material and to build a transport model. The export rates depend of land-use and we assess the annual export rate to 45, 93, 2,850, and 61 kg N-Nitrate km-2 year -1 in forested parcel, deforested parcel, agricultural parcel and urban parcel respectively. The export is more efficiency at the beginning of flood events. However the groundwater may supply high amount of nitrogen in highly agricultural watershed. We have shown that a decrease of 10 % in fertilizer input to farming areas would probably reduce the annual flux of more than 50 %. A study based on hydrology, biogeochemistry and geophysics permit to understand the behavior of a contaminated plume originating from the waste disposal. The ammonium plume flows towards the lagoon at a velocity of 23 m year -1 whereas the chloride plume should flows at 50 m year -1. It highlights an efficiency attenuation of ammonium dispersion due to sorption in soil and nitrification. The plume needs about 100 years to reach the lagoon and nowadays the only way of dispersion is the drainage of contaminated groundwater by the river. This way permits an efficiency nitrification in the hyporheic zone and limits the flux of ammonium. Considering that the input of ammonium from the landfill is balanced by the present day output via the river, the residence time of ammonium in the aquifer is between 7 and 18 years. The integration of estuarine biogeochemistry has been realized for the first time. The survey of biogenic materials and organic matter emphasizes that estuaries are autotrophic at annual scale and decrease the nitrogen continental flux of about 30 %. But in autumn, the mineralization and nutrient recycling is observed. In the Arcachon lagoon, the estuaries have a negligible impact on phosphorus biogeochemistry contrary to the sediment.

Hydrological modelling of a catchment supported by the discharge of treated wastewater - A comparison of two model concepts

Rudnick, Sebastian 26 October 2018 (has links)
Analysis of climatic scenarios for North-East Germany showed that groundwater recharge could decline. In order to sustain freshwaters, new strategies must be developed. At the Lietzengraben catchment treated wastewater is discharged to sustain wetlands and lakes in the catchment. This management strategy was developed previously by scenario analysis, performed by the hydrological iterative model ArcEGMO-ASM. In this work, the fully integrated model HydroGeoSphere was used to simulate the surface and subsurface water flow in the catchment. Based on the simulation results, flow paths and residence times were estimated. The results of the simulations by both models were investigated and compared. It was possible to reproduce the catchment dynamics regarding discharge and groundwater heads reasonably well with both models. The application of HydroGeoSphere was limited due to the inability of the model to represent features like snowfall and weirs, which are represented in ArcEGMO-ASM. The calibrated parameter values enabled the model to reproduce the catchment dynamics reasonably well. HydroGeoSphere may be limited in its use since the obtained values are partially unrealistic. HydroGeoSphere allowed the approximation of subsurface flow paths and residence times. The exfiltration of groundwater to a stream reach was estimated by measurements and compared to simulation results. Both models were not able to reproduce the spatial patterns on a sub-reach scale and the calculated exfiltration rates did not match the observed rates. The comparison of ArcEGMO-ASM and HydroGeoSphere showed the advantages and limitations of both models. Comparing the overall additional effort to the benefits, however, the application of HydroGeoSphere to investigations regarding management strategies or scenario analyses may not pay off. Since HydroGeoSphere is under steady development and computational resources improve, the use of HydroGeoSphere may be applicable in the near future.

Enhancing Britain's rivers : an interdisciplinary analysis of selected issues arising from implementation of the Water Framework Directive

Hampson, Danyel Ian January 2016 (has links)
The Water Framework Directive requires reduced environmental impacts from human activities and for the assessment of the non-market benefits of pollution remediation schemes. This policy shift has exacerbated the research problems surrounding the physical, social and economic consequences of the relationship between land use and water quality. This research seeks to quantify the major socio-economic and environmental benefits for people which may arise as riverine pollution is reduced. To achieve these aims this research integrates primary data analyses combining choice experiment techniques with geographical information system based analyses of secondary data concerning the spatial distributions of riverine pollution. Current knowledge on the microbial quality of river water, measured by faecal indicator organism (FIO) concentrations and assessed at catchment scale, is inadequate. This research develops generic regression models to predict base- and high-flow faecal coliform (FC) and enterococci (EN) concentrations, using land cover and population (human and livestock) variables. The resulting models are then used both to predict FIO concentrations in unmonitored watercourses and to evaluate the likely impacts of different land use scenarios, enabling insights into the optimal locations and cost-effective mix of implementation strategies. Valuation experiments frequently conflate respondents’ preferences for different aspects of water quality. This analysis uses stated preference techniques to disaggregate the values of recreation and ecological attributes of water quality, thereby allowing decision makers to better understand the consequences of adopting alternative investment strategies which favour either ecological, recreational or a mix of benefits. The results reveal heterogeneous preferences across society; specifically, latent class analysis identifies three distinct groups, holding significantly different preferences for water quality. From a methodological perspective this research greatly enhances the ongoing synthesis of geographic and economic social sciences and addresses important policy questions which are of interest to a variety of stakeholders, including government departments and the water industry.

Revisiting stormwater quality conceptual models in a large urban catchment : Online measurements, uncertainties in data and models / Révision des modèles conceptuels de qualité des eaux pluviales sur un grand bassin versant urbain : Mesures en continue, incertitudes sur les données et les modèles

Sandoval Arenas, Santiago 05 December 2017 (has links)
Total Suspended Solids (TSS) stormwater models in urban drainage systems are often required for scientific, legal, environmental and operational reasons. However, these TSS stormwater traditional model structures have been widely questioned, especially when reproducing data from online measurements at the outlet of large urban catchments. In this thesis, three potential limitations of traditional TSS stormwater models are analyzed in a 185 ha urban catchment (Chassieu, Lyon, France), by means 365 rainfall events monitored online: a) uncertainties in TSS data due to field conditions; b) uncertainties in hydrological models and rainfall measurements and c) uncertainties in the stormwater quality model structures. These aspects are investigated in six separate contributions, whose principal results can be summarized as follows: a) TSS data acquisition and validation: (i) four sampling strategies during rainfall events are simulated and evaluated by online TSS and flow rate measurements. Recommended sampling time intervals are of 5 min, with average sampling errors between 7 % and 20 % and uncertainties in sampling errors of about 5 %, depending on the sampling interval; (ii) the probability of underestimating the cross section mean TSS concentration is estimated by two methodologies. One method shows more realistic TSS underestimations (about 39 %) than the other (about 269 %). b) Hydrological models and rainfall measurements: (iii) a parameter estimation strategy is proposed for conceptual rainfall-runoff model by analyzing the variability of the optimal parameters obtained by single-event Bayesian calibrations, based on clusters and graphs representations. The new strategy shows more performant results in terms of accuracy and precision in validation; (iv) a methodology aimed to calculate “mean” areal rainfall estimation is proposed, based on the same hydrological model and flow rate data. Rainfall estimations by multiplying factors over constant-length time window and rainfall zero records filled with a reverse model show the most satisfactory results compared to further rainfall estimation models. c) Stormwater TSS pollutograph modelling: (v) the modelling performance of the traditional Rating Curve (RC) model is superior to different linear Transfer Function models (TFs), especially in terms of parsimony and precision of the simulations. No relation between the rainfall corrections or hydrological conditions defined in (iii) and (iv) with performances of RC and TFs could be established. Statistical tests strengthen that the occurrence of events not representable by the RC model in time is independent of antecedent dry weather conditions; (vi) a Bayesian reconstruction method of virtual state variables indicate that potential missing processes in the RC description are hardly interpretable as a unique state of virtual available mass over the catchment decreasing over time, as assumed by a great number of traditional models.

Développement d'échantillonneurs passifs de type POCIS pour l'évaluation de la contamination en pesticides des eaux de bassins versants languedociens / Passive samplers development (POCIS) to estimate pesticides contamination of catchment basins in Languedoc Roussillon

Desgranges, Nathalie 23 February 2015 (has links)
Despite a noticeable sales decrease since few years, France remains the first european user of phytosanitary products. This is not without consequences on the environment and the untargeted organisms. Several studies allowed on one hand to better understand phenomena of pesticides transfer in water-air and soils compartments and on the other hand to highlight their contamination. Data concerning the water are more numerous cause of its status of ultimate receptacle of pollution and standards established by regulatory texts. The european Water Framework Directive (WFD) adopted in 2000 aims to achieve good chemical and ecological status of water bodies by 2015 with an obligation of results. The good chemical status depends on respect for the Environmental Quality Standards (EQS) established, for instance, for 24 pesticides. In 2012, 5% of river measurement points and 19%of groundwater measurement points do not respect these EQS. For many years, Languedoc Roussillon is the first wine-producing region of France and suffers from a significant pesticide pressure. In 2014, a report from the Regional Health Agency (RHA) has mentioned a relatively recent use of banned pesticides since the early 2000’s like simazin and terbutylazin. Moreover, RHA stated that most of recognized cases of non-compliance could be linked to the presence of agricultural activity in the catchment basin.[...] The establishment of POCIS devices on the three study sites showed the predominance ofpesticides used in viticulture and showed all the interest of the tool on a qualitative point ofview. The comparison of the tool with the automated sampling shows disparities between real concentration and concentration estimated with the POCIS. However, it remains to improvethe tool on a quantitative way to obtain a reliable and robust sampler for this type of exposure medium.

Hydrological characteristics of experimental catchments for the identification of hydrological indicators for the environmental monitoring of forest plantations.

Mosca, Andreia Arruda de Oliveira 16 July 2003 (has links)
The present work consisted of the hydrological characterization of two catchments aiming to identify hydrologic criteria and indicators that can contribute for the implementation of better management practices of Eucalyptus plantations, as well as the evaluation of possible impacts of these activities on catchment yield and quality. The experimental catchments are located at Fazenda Santa Terezinha, Bofete (SP). The catchment E is covered with Eucalyptus grandis, management for sawmill situated at Eucatex S.A. Catchment P is covered with pasture, traditional land use in the region. The quantitative hydrological characterization was based on the analysis of rainfall and streamflow data during two consecutive years (November of 2000 the October of 2002). The average annual precipitation for the water year of nov/00 out/01 was 1.893,80 mm and 1,407.90 mm for nov/01 out/02. The annual streamflow for the same water years were 148,76 mm and 125,62 mm, respectively. The average losses caused by evapotranspiration in the monitored period amounted to 1,513.66 mm. For catchment P, the streamflow observed for the water year of nov/00 out/01 corresponded to 383,35 mm and for nov/01 out/02, to 365,67 mm. The average losses for evapotranspiration in this catchment corresponded to 1276,34 mm. The average temperature observed between set/01 ago/02 was 21,38 ºC and the average relative humidity, 69,67 %. Catchment P presented a higher variation for all the studied parameters used physicist-chemistries to evaluate the quality of the water of the emanation and a lesser resilience. The reduced concentrations of nutrients losses in streamflow of catchment E, coupled with a more stable hydrological responses, reflect better protection from Eucalyptus forest. In the catchment, it was verified that the soil resistance to penetration in the plantation line, between trees, was lower than that observed outside of the plantation line. For catchment P, the evaluation it was made in the cattle track, where the values of soil bulk density and resistance to penetration were higher than those observed outside the cattle track. The suggest visual indicators of catchment health shown correspondence with the observed results. The monitored catchments are part of a broader of catchment environmental and monitoring developed by the Institute of Forest Research and Studies, through the Laboratory of Forest Hydrology of the Department of Forest Sciences of the Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiroz", University of São Paulo (ESALQ/USP).

The geomorphology of Southeast Australian mountain streams

Thompson, Chris J., Physical, Environmental & Mathematical Sciences, Australian Defence Force Academy, UNSW January 2006 (has links)
This thesis is a study of the morphology and sediment transport dynamics of mountain streams in southeast Australia. Mountain streams represent important geomorphological and ecological systems in Australia which have hitherto been poorly studied. The variability of mountain stream reach morphology was investigated at the regional scale using topographical surveys and sediment sampling techniques. Study sites were stratified by slope and local lithology. Eight channel-morphologies including Bedrock, Cascade, Step-pool, Planebed, Pool-Riffle, Cascade-pool, Riffle-step and Infilled, were identified using an objective statistical approach. Overall, channel types were found to correspond to existing reach-scale mountain stream templates. Five morphologies were associated with a specific lithology type which controlled the size and shape of grains supplied to the channels. Differences in coarse sediment transport processes between morphologies were investigated using stream monitoring techniques and Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating. Monitoring results from a 3 year period indicated that channel beds are resistant to entrainment with shear stress thresholds for bedload transport ranging between 64 to 74 N/m2. Transport of reach median grain sizes requires floods that exceed bankfull discharge. Existing competence equations were found to over-predict the hydraulic driving force and consequently, a modified entrainment model was used to account for the regional channel characteristics. OSL dating was investigated as a tool to provide data on long-term sediment transport processes. Minimum age model results from the OSL dates show overall agreement with a selected entrainment model, and indicate differences in sediment transport dynamics between some reach morphology types. A regime model was used to quantify the physical domains of different channel morphologies. Limitations of the model were overcome by modifying the sediment supply surrogate to better reflect the dominant transported bedload size. Morphology types were delineated according to different sediment transport capacity-sediment supply domains. The distribution of channel morphology types within a series of catchments in southeast Australia was modelled within a GIS platform using the diagnostics of reach morphology derived from this study. The model provides a conceptual framework to evaluate the potential link between channel form, potential habitat diversity and aquatic biodiversity within the channel network in mountain streams.
