The Preservation of Digital Objects in German Repositories: Die Archivierung digitaler Objekte in deutschenRepositorien: Drei Fallstudien: Three Case Studies

Recker, Astrid 04 November 2009 (has links)
Taking its cue from the increasing amount of digital content deposited into institutional and subject repositories as well as the open question of repositories'' role in long-term preservation, this study presents case studies of three German institutional and subject repositories all of which are in a different stage of establishing a (cooperative) framework for the long-term preservation of their digital collections. Drawing on different sets of criteria for trustworthy repositories, it is investigated which strategies the selected repositories pursue to preserve the digital assets in their collections, and how these strategies are implemented with the help of both human repository staff and the repository software used. The following repositories are considered: pedocs (Deutsches Institut für Internationale Pädagogische Forschung), JUWEL (Forschungszentrum Jülich), and Qucosa (SLUB Dresden). In that the latter can be regarded as examples for common types of (German) repositories, the results of this study might on the one hand serve as a guideline for repositories that intend, similar to the ones described here, to explore questions of long-term preservation in the near future, or are even taking their first concrete steps in this field. On the other hand, it is hoped that this work can at least give some hints as to the stage and status of long-term preservation in the German repository landscape.

Romero Yslachin, Alejandra Xiomi, Ventosilla Laverio, Yady Elizabeth 01 October 2020 (has links)
International trade presents many advantages, which are, in the first place, the promotion of the diversification of the exportable offer. Significantly, the insertion of local products in new markets means greater economic growth. Undoubtedly, the implementation of the Peru - United States Free Trade Agreement in 2009 consolidated free access for agricultural products. For this, the trade policy instrument such as the present Free Trade Agreements allowed Peru commercial access to one of the largest markets in the world. The importance of free trade and access for agricultural products is highlighted, which brings Peru closer to different world production chains and, in this way, “The great opportunity for Agriculture” is presented. This is certified and promoted by the agribusiness sector and public sector institutions with their free trade legitimation mechanisms that give support and access to implement its operation. The objective of this investigation is to analyze the commercial factors that influenced exports under tariff heading 20.05.99.1000, prepared or preserved artichokes, during the years 2008 - 2019, within the framework of the Peru-United States FTA. For this, it is used a mixt research approach. On the one hand, it is used a qualitative approach, in which the influence of the Peru-United States Free Trade Agreement and the certification systems are analyzed as factors that influenced the flow of exports of canned artichokes. On the other hand, the causal and correlational quantitative approach is used using econometric techniques based on time series with monthly information from 2008 to 2019. The findings of this research show that the variation in exports of canned artichokes is mainly due to the signing of the Peru-United States FTA trade agreement, the certification systems and determinants of the international market such as the demand for the product by the United States and its national production. / Tesis

Byggfuktens inverkan på energiförbrukning : En studie i energiförluster på grund av byggfukt / Building moisture impact on energy consumption : A study in energy losses due to building moisture

Berggrén, Erik, Lunqe, Edward January 2015 (has links)
Energy efficiency and low energy houses are today important factors within the building sector. What’s often forgotten, and with little or no research available, is how building moisture affect energy consumption. The intention of the thesis is to increase the knowledge of building moistures consequence’s by investigating how large the energy is to dehydrate concrete structures and also to investigate if it should be taken in account by environmental certification when buildings are certified. All material and medium strives to be in moisture equilibrium with its environment. For building materials to dehydrate into equilibrium with its environment evaporation is required. Because evaporation makes the ambient temperature lower the energy consumption for heating increases. In the thesis the moisture calculation software’s KFX03 and WUFI Pro 5.3 are used to calculate the water quantity of dehydration and when it occurs in concrete structures. A fact sheet was programmed, in Excel, for fast and simple energy calculations of dehydration in a building. To estimate the quantity of heated concrete in new buildings three newly produced buildings where studied. The result shows that the energy for dehydrations increased a buildings heating by approximately 5 %, correspondent to roughly 2.5 years of consumption. The work indicates that building moisture has a relatively high impact on a buildings heating, when taking the different condition during construction and living in consideration. Therefore the current environment and energy certification systems should in greater regards focus on energy consumption during construction. To be able to better answer in which extent the drying of building moisture affects energy consumption comparisons should be done in concrete with different water-cement ratio and energy calculation to estimate energy losses during construction. Thus to answer how big effect a buildings construction phase has on the environment and thereby how big significance this phase should have on environment certifications.

Tool Integration and Safety : A Foundation for Analysing the Impact of Tool Integrationon Non-functional Properties

Asplund, Fredrik January 2012 (has links)
The increasing complexity of embedded systems development is becoming difficult to handle with development environments based on disjoint engineering tools. Support for interactions between various engineering tools, especially through automated means, has therefore received an increased amount of attention during the last few years. The subsequent increase in the amount of tool integration is leading to an increased impact of tool integration on non-functional properties of development efforts, development environments and end products. At the same time there is a lack of methods and tools for analysing the relationship between these properties and tool integration. To establish a foundation for analysing this generic relationship, the specific relationship between tool integration and the safety of end products is analysed in this thesis. A survey was conducted to analyze the State of the Art of tool integration as related to safety. This survey specifically identified the lack of an efficient handling of tool integration by modern safety standards as an important concern. In relation to this survey, three theories were identified as of specific importance. These are the school of thought known as Systems Thinking, the Systems-Theoretic Accident Model and Processes (STAMP) causality model and the System-Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA) hazard analysis technique. Building on these theories, this thesis provides original contributions intended to (1) describe concepts and models related to tool integration and safety (the first and second contribution), (2) link tool integration to safety in a way that reduces complexity during analysis (the third contribution) and (3) propose how to interpret and make use of the implications of the presented theories and the first three contributions (the fourth and fifth contribution). • The first contribution is a new conceptual model of a development effort that emphasizes tool integration. • The second contribution is a new reference model for tool integration in highly heterogeneous environments. • The third contribution consists of nine safety-related tool chain properties, i.e. properties of tool chains that could mitigate at least part of the risks introduced by tool integration. • The fourth contribution is a proposition on how to identify safety implications due to a high level of automation of tool integration. • The fifth contribution is a proposition for a new software tool qualification process.

Exploring Food Safety Implications of Home Fruit Dehydration: A Case Study of Apple Drying

Megan Mei Yee Low (12890486) 17 June 2022 (has links)

Dried fruits have traditionally received little food safety attention despite multiple Salmonella and E. coli outbreaks associated with low-moisture foods. Given the popularity of dried apples, many consumers produce dried apples at home. However, little is known about this niche population, their apple drying practices and their sources of food safety information. Therefore, this thesis aimed to use apple drying as a case study to i) identify the fruit drying practices in a domestic setting, ii) determine the factors influencing the associated behaviors and iii) evaluate the food safety information in fruit drying recipes.

The first two studies used quantitative methods with survey data on home apple dryers in the United States. In the first, apple drying practices were identified and evaluated for level of food safety using a safe practice index. Then, regression analyses showed the influence of demographic factors, attitudes, perceived behavioral control (PBC), subjective norms, risk perception and exposure to food safety information on selected apple drying practices. The third study was a content analysis using a qualitative approach to analyze recipe information on blogs, YouTube videos, cookbooks and university extension publications.

Findings revealed that the level of safe food handling in home apple drying was low. Home apple dryers had inadequate frequency of handwashing during apple preparation, potential points of cross-contamination from kitchen tools, a lack of hurdle technology without an apple pre-treatment step, failure to incorporate a thermal kill step during drying, and a lack of objective measurements to ensure that target parameters are attained. The investigated demographic factors, risk perception and food safety information or training had significant influence on current safe apple handling behaviors. Attitudes, PBC and subjective norms were strong predictors of behavior intention. An evaluation of apple drying recipes showed that food safety emphasis was missing. There were omission of food safety controls and a lack of standardization in the recommended procedures.

The results provided handling practice data to support the development of more accurate food safety risk assessment models, and to guide the development of food safety education for home apple dryers. It urged the need for food safety improvement not only in home apple dryers’ practices, but also the information disseminated to them.
