Blurred (County) Lines: A Comprehensive Analysis of Voting Patterns in Florida at the County and Regional Levels from 1950 to 2012

Over the last sixty years, voting patterns in the United States have changed dramatically, and this is especially true in the state of Florida. Though there is some literature in the field of political science that outlines the voting and election history of Florida and identifies some trends, this literature is extremely limited and is not comprehensive of the data that is available up to the present day. This study seeks to find Florida’s voting patterns and to explain how they can be understood by both the casual observer and the political scientist. To do so, unique methodology was applied that used the "relative margin" of both a county and a region in a particular election to give the Democratic nominee’s performance context both in the election in question and in history, by comparing the actual margin of victory or defeat of the Democratic nominee to the statewide margin of victory or defeat. This was an illuminating process that ultimately revealed some truths about the election history of Florida: the counties and regions most likely to vote for Democratic nominees in the 1950s and early 1960 are now among the least likely to do so, and the counties and regions most likely to vote for Republican nominees in the 1950s and early 1960s are now considered to be "swing" or "tossup" areas that are regularly and alternatively won by Democratic and Republican nominees. Additionally, the pattern of each region in how it voted in presidential elections was compared to forty seven other states in the country to provide further context as to how the election patterns can be understood in context.

Ce mémoire étudie comment Condorcet, Hegel, Durkheim, Parsons, Bourdieu et Passeron conçoivent les fonctions respectives de la famille et de l’école en matière d’éducation. Depuis la Révolution française, les idées modernes sur ce partage ont beaucoup évoluées. C’est à titre de témoins éminents de cette évolution que ces auteurs sont interrogés. Toutes héritières des principes issus du siècle des Lumières, les conceptions étudiées varient selon le rapport à l’ordre social et selon l’intention qui les guide ; le bonheur universel qui fait autorité sur la liberté de l’individu en formation devient de moins en moins abstrait. En tant que finalité, cet idéal se fait supplanter, presque, par la question du bonheur individuel, pourtant soumise aujourd’hui à l’exigence de la réussite scolaire. La responsabilité individuelle s’en trouve accrue, puisque, depuis que les structures sociales inégalitaires ont été sévèrement critiquées, l’ordre social ne doit plus reposer sur des déterminations de classe. / This study examines how Condorcet, Hegel, Durkheim, Parsons, Bourdieu and Passeron perceive the roles of both the family and the school with regard to upbringing. Since the French Revolution, these perceptions have greatly evolved. We refer to these authors since they clearly represent the context of this evolution. Although these perceptions have inherited principles originating from the Enlightenment, they vary according to the relationship with society and the intentions by which they are guided. Universal happiness, which has an impact on the freedom of the growing individual, becomes less and less abstract. In the end, this ideal is almost surpassed by the freedom of personal happiness, which still depends today on success in school, as it is a generally accepted requirement. The responsibility of each individual is amplified, because, ever since unequal social structures have been highly criticized, social order shall no longer be based upon class determination.

Les objectifs de cette thèse sont de mettre à jour, d\'analyser et de critiquer la conception du cinéma révolutionnaire qui a été portée par le Cinema Novo et s\'est fondée sur le concept de « conscientisation » tel qu\'il a été formulé par les sciences sociales brésiliennes dans les années cinquante. Le Cinema Novo, que nous définirons comme un groupe de cinéastes, soutient une production suivie dans le Brésil des années soixante et se présente comme un cinéma humaniste, ayant pour but la prise de conscience par la population brésilienne des mécanismes sociaux, culturels, économiques et politiques qui expliquent le sous-développement, afin qu\'elle se révolte et fasse la révolution. Glauber Rocha fut la figure de proue de ce cinéma qui ne se résume pas à lui et qui a beaucoup évolué au cours de ses dix ans d\'existence. Nous le verrons en étudiant, entre autres : Sécheresse (Vidas secas) de Nelson Pereira dos Santos, Les Fusils (Os Fuzis) de Ruy Guerra, Le Dieu noir et le diable blond (Deus e o diabo na terra do sol), Terre en transe (Terra em transe) et Antonio-das-Mortes (O Dragão da maldade contra o santo guerreiro) de Glauber Rocha. Notre approche s\'insère dans le champ cinéma-histoire et applique à un nouvel objet d\'étude les méthodes développées sur d\'autres sujets par Michel Marie, Jean-Pierre Esquenazi ou encore Jean-Pierre Bertin-Maghit. Nous verrons ici comment, assimilant cinéma d\'auteur et cinéma révolutionnaire, le Cinema Novo a évité les schémas classiques et manipulateurs d\'un cinéma de propagande sans pour autant établir avec le grand public une relation suivie et devenir ce cinéma populaire de conscientisation idéalisé à ses débuts. / A tese apresentada pretende revelar, analisar e criticar a concepção do cinema revolucionário defendida pelo Cinema Novo fundada no conceito de conscientização formulada pelas ciências sociais brasileiras nos anos cinqüenta. O Cinema Novo, definido aqui como um grupo de cineastas, produz um volume conseqüente de filmes durante os anos sessenta. Ele se apresenta como um cinema humanista que tem por objetivo provocar a compreensão, pela população brasileira, dos mecanismos sociais, culturais, políticos e econômicos que explicam o subdesenvolvimento, para que esta se revolte e faça a revolução. Glauber Rocha foi o líder incontestável deste cinema que no entanto não se restringe a ele e que muito evoluiu durante seus dez anos de existência como veremos estudando entre outros : Vidas secas de Nelson Pereira dos Santos, Os Fuzis de Ruy Guerra, Deus e o diabo na terra do sol, Terra em transe e O Dragão da maldade contra o santo guerreiro de Glauber Rocha. Nossa perspectiva se insere no campo de estudo das relações entre cinema e história e aplica a um novo objeto métodos anteriormente desenvolvidos por Michel Marie, Jean-Pierre Esquenazi e Jean-Pierre Bertin-Maghit. Nós veremos como, a partir da assimilação entre cinema de autor e cinema revolucionário, o Cinema Novo conseguiu evitar os esquemas clássicos do cinema de propaganda sem no entanto estabelecer com o público uma relação estável, nem se tornar esse cinema popular de conscientização idealizado no início dos anos sessenta.

This essay is an examination of the examples in Kant’s Critique of Judgement. The examples which I have focused on all converge in an idea of wildness. These examples of the beautiful are illuminated by a culture-historical perspective, where the literary and scientific travelogue genre is of great importance. Apart from being exegetic and culture historical, my method is also analytic. The general ambition is to answer the question; what is the parrot doing in the third Critique and what makes it a better example of a free beauty than a jackdaw? Taking as point of departure Jacques Derrida’s notion of parergonality, the example is primarily understood as formative for the thesis, not only as illustrative. By analysing Kant’s use of the wild, exotic and colourful objects as examples the essay intends to show how imagination and understanding operates in the beautiful. The parrot thus corresponds with the role of imagination in its relation to understanding in aesthetic judgement. The examples manifest the strength of the imagination and how it dominates understanding through its wildness. The aim is to present a way to approach the restful contemplation that Kant ascribes to the mind in the experience of the beautiful as bearer of a movement with considerable importance. Rodolphe Gasché’s emphasis on the wild examples as a precognitive minimum for understanding and Hannah Arendt’s view on imagination as an ability of intuition without the presence of the object, have also been essential for my argument.

Master of Philosophy (MPhil) / Informationist Science Fiction theory provides a way of analysing science fiction texts and narratives in order to demonstrate on an informational basis the uniqueness of science fiction proper as a mode of fiction writing. The theoretical framework presented can be applied to all types of written texts, including non-fictional texts. In "Informationist Science Fiction Theory and Informationist Science Fiction" the author applies the theoretical framework and its specific methods and principles to various contemporary science fiction works, including works by William Gibson, Neal Stephenson and Vernor Vinge. The theoretical framework introduces a new informational theoretic re-framing of existing science fiction literary theoretic posits such as Darko Suvin's novum, the mega-text as conceived of by Damien Broderick, and the work of Samuel R Delany in investigating the subjunctive mood in SF. An informational aesthetics of SF proper is established, and the influence of analytic philosophy - especially modal logic - is investigated. The materialist foundations of the metaphysical outlook of SF proper is investigated with a view to elucidating the importance of the relationship between scientific materialism and SF. SF is presented as The Fiction of Veridical, Counterfactual and Heterogeneous Information.
