A Comparative Study of the Appeal in Favorite Comics and Favorite Fiction, as Reported by Ninth-grade Pupils in the James P. Elder Junior High School, Fort Worth, Texas

Smith, Mary Blanche 06 1900 (has links)
The problem of this study is to compare certain elements of appeal in favorite comic books and favorite books of fiction read by 384 ninth-grade pupils in the J. P. Elder Junior High School, Fort Worth, Texas, during a three-months period from November 7, 1949, to February 7, 1950. The purpose of this investigation is to ascertain whether the same elements of appeal are common to both types of reading, and whether they compare favorably with the findings of other investigations reported in literature on the subject.

Rodríguez Pino, Javier Ignacio 21 January 2021 (has links)
[EN] This thesis reflects a line of research based on my own artistic practice. In general terms it refers to a group of projects produced of my sefl between 2014 and 2020. Among them is Cobra (2020), carried out especially for this doctoral program in order to further delve into the hypotheses and objectives that my artistic research aims to propose and achieve respectively. Specifically these works have attempted to explore, from a cross between drawings and texts, the images and stories that emerge from the scenes of political violence in Chile. Historically, and specifically, I am referring to those installed by domination in that country, since the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990) to the post-dictatorial condition that successive democratic governments have maintained from 1990 to now. That said, the first question our research raises is: Can we collaborate from art to make a more complete interpretation of History that helps us to better face the conditions of violence installed by domination today? The development of this thesis aims to answer this question from a detailed analysis of the antecedents and methodologies that occur in the research, linked to drawing, photographic image, social sciences and comics / Rodríguez Pino, JI. Gjenskinn : a comic book project / Gjenskinn : et tegneserieprosjekt

Guttormsgaard, Agnes January 2024 (has links)
Gjenskinn is a graphic novel about feeling stuck, and the attempt to walk it off. The comic follows the young student Mia as she leaves her apartment around midnight to go buy snacks, ending up on a trip that is both longer and more social than planned.  Exploring themes of melancholia through excessive overthinking and awkward conversations, Gjenskinn tries to put images to feelings it's hard to put words to. It is a story about finding your way back (from the store), told with both humor and seriousness.

Studi sulle intersezioni tra Cinismo antico e commedia greca e latina

Izzo, Donatella 18 December 2019 (has links)
My thesis is intended to analyse the interactions between Greek and Roman Comedy and Cynicism. My study, that considers all the complex issues related to the sources of Cynicism, is developed using a double perspective. On the one hand, I examine the formal debts that Cynical tradition has contracted towards Comedy and the different functions of the geloion in the communicative forms used by Cynics. In this perspective, I also analyse the passages where the ancient sources put into relation Cynics with Comedy or with a specific comedian and the passages in which the attribution fluctuates between comedians and Cynics. On the other hand, I study the representation of Cynics in Comedy. Therefore, the significant part of my research is committed to the collection and to the comments of the comic verses where there is a reference to Cynics or where scholars have suspected an allusion to them. In this analyse, I devote a special attention to the comparison between the representation of Cynics in Comedy and these in other sources. From this analysis we can infer that there are not many differences about elements used to the representation, but rather a risemantisation and a different connotation of same elements.

Adapting Snow White : tracing female maturation and ageing across film, television and the comic book

Whitehurst, Katherine F. January 2016 (has links)
This thesis analyses 21st century filmic, televisual and comic “Snow White” adaptations. The research is interdisciplinary, bringing together scholarship on gender, childhood, ageing, adaptation, media and fairy tales. The first half of the thesis contextualises the broader historical and sociocultural conversation “Snow White” tellings are immersed in by nature of their shared culture and history. It also identifies the tale’s core and traces the tale’s formation as a tale type from the seventeenth to the twenty–first century. The second half of this thesis moves to an analysis of two films (Mirror Mirror, 2012; Snow White and the Huntsman, 2012), a television series (Once Upon a Time, 2011–present) and a comic book series (Fables, 2002–2015). It considers the kinds of stories about female growth and ageing different media adaptations of “Snow White” enable, and contemplates how issues of time and temporality and growth and ageing play out in these four versions. In analysing the relationship between form and content, this thesis illustrates how a study of different media adaptations of “Snow White” can enrich fairy–tale scholarship and the fairy–tale canon. It also details the imaginative space different media adaptations of “Snow White” provide when engaging with dominant discourses around female growth and ageing in the West. Using “Snow White” as a case study, this thesis centrally facilitates a dialogue between ageing, childhood, fairy–tale and adaptation studies.

The use of the bastard identity: from Victorian subverters to superheroes in the twenty-first century and beyond

Unknown Date (has links)
This project explores the use if illegitimacy within Western discourse over the last three centuries. Illegitimacy was used in Victorian literature as a literary device to drive plot but evolved into a touchstone for Western discourse to explore the bounds of what is considered respectable society. Over time, as illegitimacy has become more mainstream, I contend illegitimate identities have been utilized to serve as a mirror for Western hegemony. In the first chapter, I explore the origins of illegitimacy being used as a literary device in novels by Victorian authors Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins. In the second chapter, I examine the role illegitimacy plays in the origin stories of canonical comic book superheroes Batman and Superman. Lastly, in the third chapter, I scrutinize the role illegitimacy plays in defining the human condition within science fiction as human culture continues to advance technologically towards a post human world. / by Ryan Dessler. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2012. / Includes bibliography. / Mode of access: World Wide Web. / System requirements: Adobe Reader.
