The effect of using Lakatos' heuristic method to teach surface area of cone on students' learning : the case of secondary school mathematics students in Cyprus

Dimitriou-Hadjichristou, Chrysoula 02 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of using Lakatos’ heuristic method to teach the surface area of the cone (SAC) on students’ learning. The Lakatos (1976) heuristic framework and the Oh (2010) model of “the enhanced-conflict map” were employed as framework for the study. The first research question examined the impact of the Lakatosian heuristic method on students’ learning of the SAC, which was addressed in three sub-questions: the impact of the method on the students’ achievement, the impact of the method on their conceptual learning and the impact of the method on their higher order thinking skills. The second question examined whether the heuristic method of teaching the SAC helped students to sustain their learning better than the traditional method (Euclidean method). The third question examined whether the heuristic method of teaching SAC could change students’ readiness level, according to Bloom’s taxonomy. A pre-test and post-test quasi-experimental research design was used in the study that involved a total of 198 Grade 11 students (98 in the experimental group and 100 in the control group) from two schools in Cyprus. The instruments used for data collection were cognitive tests, lesson observations (video-recorded), interviews and questionnaire. Data was analysed using inferential statistics and the Oh (2010) model of the enhanced conflict map. Student achievement within time was the dependent variable and the method of training the independent variable. Therefore, time was the “within” factor and each group was measured three times (pre-test, post-test and delayed). The differences in students’ achievement within each group over time were examined. Results indicated that the average mean score achievement of the students in the experimental group was double that of the students in the control group. The Jun- Young Oh’s model of the enhanced conflict map showed that students in both groups changed from alternative conceptions to scientific conceptions with the experimental group showing greater improvement. It was also observed that from the post-test to delayed test, the Lakatosian method of teaching the SAC has a significant positive effect on students’ achievement at all levels of Bloom’s taxonomy, especially at the higher order thinking (HOT) levels (application and analysis-synthesis levels) as compared to the Euclidean method of teaching. In addition, the Lakatosian method helped the students to sustain their learning over time better than the Euclidean method did and also helped them to change their readiness level, especially at the HOT levels. The Lakatosian method helped students to foster skills that promote active learning. Of great importance was the use of mathematical language, as well as, the enhanced perception in the experimental group in comparison with the control group, through the use of the Lakatosian method. The results of this study are promising. It is recommended that pre-service teachers should be trained on how to effectively implement the Lakatosian heuristic method in their teaching. / Mathematics Education / D. Phil. Estudo de trafegabilidade aplicado a veículos de roda em transporte e tração / Trafficability study applied to wheeled vehicles in transport and traction

Knob, Marcelino João 24 March 2010 (has links)
The ability of vehicles to traverse soft soils is an important aspect of their performance. The geological, climate and topography diversity originated, in Rio Grande do Sul, extensive areas of hydromorphic clay soils, as example, Planssoils and Gleissoils. When saturated of water, these soft soils present low loads support, difficult agricultural machinery work and limit the traverse of military wheeled vehicles. The aim of this study was to determine the limit of soil conditions for trafficability of military 6 x 6 wheeled trucks (Cascavel and Urutu), determine the ground pressure and predict the mobility condition from soil cone index (SCI) and vehicle characteristics. This study also proposed to evaluate the performance of a four wheel drive tractor in drawbar pull test and trafficability performance, to correlate the reduced tire inflation pressure and vehicle loading effect on slipping, drawbar pull, fuel consumption and mobility under different soil moisture conditions. It was found that the Cascavel military truck had a minimal ground pressure of 357 kPa and it needed SCI of 402 kPa in the critical layer for a single pass. The Urutu truck had a ground pressure of 401 kPa and required at least 431 kPa in SCI for one-way pass. The NATO Reference Mobility Model (NRMM) and Mean Maximum Pressure (MPP) predicting model underestimate the soil cone index required for these military vehicles to traverse soft-soils, however, MMP was more appropriate to predict the correct SIC for the tested vehicles. For the tractor experiment it was found that tire inflation pressure changed the ground pressure and the vehicle loading didn t change the ground surface pressure. The greatest drawbar pull were obtained at low tractor speed, reduced inflation pressure and high loading level, operating on hard ground. The lowest specific fuel consumption was obtained on hard ground, empty weight, low tire pressure and operating in high speed gear. The increase of soil moisture decreased the dynamic traction coefficient from 0.57 to 0.31 and the traction efficiency decrease from 50 to 37%. Reduced inflation tire pressure had positive effects on tractor mobility in waterlogged soils, reducing slipping and increasing traverse speed. Using height loading level had negative effect on wet soils because it require more engine power and increase the fuel consumption.

Katerin Guerrero Doria 21 August 2015 (has links)
The time domain reflectometry allows estimating the moisture content of a medium by means of its correlation with the dielectric constant. A coil TDR probe, which can be driven into the ground together with others in situ penetration tests, can be used to estimate the moisture content at different depths. It is an interesting approach for geotechnical site characterization. In this work, a coil TDR probe was adapted and used in combination with the CPT test for the site characterization of an unsaturated sandy soil profile which occurs in the region of Bauru (SP). The probe calibration was performed in laboratory specifically for that soil. The calibration equation, which presented the best results, were defined correlating the dielectric constant, electrical conductivity and dry density with the moisture content. In order to improve the accuracy for determining the water content in the field and to eliminate possible interference on the electromagnetic wave registration, modifications were made in some characteristics of the original design of this probe. Such modifications consisted in separating the conductive electrodes from the metal parts of the probe, and eliminating the coaxial extension cable, connecting the probe directly to a coaxial cable 12 m long. Such changes have led to a significant improvement in the determination of the moisture content profile of the studied site. The moisture content values determined in situ by using the TDR along 8 m depth were compared with reference values obtained from disturbed soil samples collected using mechanical augers. The root mean square error of the gravimetric water content profile using the TDR coil probe was 1.61% in the last test campaign. The results of this research indicate that this tool is suitable to estimate the gravimetric moisture content together with the CPT test.

Propriedades eletrônicas dos isolantes topológicos / Electronic properties of Topological Insulators

Leonardo Batoni Abdalla 05 February 2015 (has links)
In the search of a better understanding of the electronic and magnetic properties of topological insulators we are faced with one of its most striking features, the existence of metallic surface states with helical spin texture which are protected from non-magnetic impurities. On the surface these spin channels allows a huge potential for applications in spintronic devices. There is much to do and treating calculations via \\textit{Ab initio} simulations allows us a predictive character that corroborates the elucidation of physical phenomena through experimental analysis. In this work we analyze the electronic properties of topological insulators such as: (Bi, Sb)$_2$(Te, Se)$_3$, Germanene and functionalized Germanene. Calculations based on DFT show the importance of the separation from interlayers of Van der Waals in materials like Bi$_2$Se$_3$ and Bi$_2$Te$_3$. We show that due to stacking faults, small oscillations in the QLs axis (\\textit{Quintuple Layers}) can generate a decoupling of the Dirac cones and create metal states in the bulk phase Bi$_2$Te$_3$. Regarding the Bi$_2$Se$_3$ a systematic study of the effects of transition metal impurities was performed. We observed that there is a degeneracy lift of the Dirac cone if there is any magnetization on any axis. If the magnetization remains in plane, we observe a small shift to another reciprocal lattice point. However, if the magnetization is pointing out of the plane a lifting in energy occurs at the very $ \\Gamma $ point, but in a more intense way. It is important to emphasize that in addition to mapping the sites with their magnetic orientations of lower energy we saw that the lifting in energy is directly related to the local geometry of the impurity. This provides distinct STM images for each possible site, allowing an experimental to locate each situation in the laboratory. We also studied the topological transition in the alloy (Bi$_x$Sb$_{1-x}$)$_ 2$Se$_3$, where we identify a trivial and topological insulator for $x = 0$ and $x = 1$. Despite the obvious existence of such a transition, important details remain unclear. We conclude that doping with non-magnetic impurities provides a good technique for handling and cone engineering this family of materials so that depending on the range of doping we can eliminate conductivity channels coming from the bulk. Finally we studied a Germanene and functionalized Germanene with halogens. Using an asymmetrical functionalization and with the topological invariant $Z_2$ we noted that the Ge-I-H system is a topological insulator that could be applied in the development of spin-based devices.

Análise tomográfica quantitativa linear de espessuras ósseas alveolares com vistas ao diagnóstico em ortodontia - Proposta de método / A quantitative linear tomographic analisys of the alveolar bone thicknesses and its implications to diagnosis in Orthodontics A method proposal

Siddhartha Uhrigshardt Silva 01 June 2012 (has links)
This research aimed to justify the proposed use of a new tomography method (cone beam) in the clinical assessment of alveolar, maxillary and mandibular bone width, through objective tests of the Conditions of Repetitiveness and Intermediate Precision associated with intra- and inter-operator variation, using the independent computer program (AutoCAD®) for the execution of the measurements according to the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) sequence defined for this experiment. Phase I of the research recorded the criteria for obtaining the final quality of the tomography images, using iCAT® (Imaging Sciences International, Hatfield, Pa, USA) equipment with acquisition parameters 120KVp, 37.7mA, and 26.9s, and considering cilindric field-of-view (FOV) of 13cm and 512x512 pixels matrix. The voxel resolution was 0.25mm. Phase II recorded the exploratory criteria relative to the operational conditions of the visualization software, registry (visual inspection and landmark identification) and measurement of the selected magnitudes. Phase III recorded the tests of repeatability and reproducibility of the measurements. A total of 72 linear magnitudes were previously defined and methodologically tested for their quality of inspection, identification and measurement, based on assessment by seven (7) independent operators, five of whom were specialists, with masters degrees in Orthodontics from FOUSP; and the other, a specialist in Dental Radiology and Doctor of Oral Diagnosis (FOUSP). The examiners were previously instructed, calibrated and trained according to the requirements for performing the proposed tests. The research protocol was approved by the Committee for Ethics in Research of the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of São Paulo (Protocol # 102/11-CAAE 0120.0.017.000-11). Statistical analysis used the (hierarchical) Components of Variation Model, and the sources of variation were considered to be: the measurements, made by the same operator or by different operators; the face considered, whether vestibular or lingual/palatal; the locations (three levels of alveolar bone thickness) in each of the faces and, also, the different teeth. This analysis was carried out separately for the mandible and the maxilla. Values of p<0.05 indicated statistical significance. The results indicated overall significant reliability in the proposed method considering the Condition of Repetitiveness, with only 0.24% of total maxillary, and 0.53% of mandibular, variability attributable to a single operator; and with expressive values relative to measurement uncertainties of maxillary (0.156 mm) and mandibular (0.091mm) averages, thereby attesting to significant internal consistency (\"repeatability\") of the method. Tests for the Condition of Intermediate Precision also indicated overall significant reliability of the proposed method, with only 1.52% total mandibular, and 0.25% maxillary, variability attributable to the participation of the various operators; and, also, with expressive values relative to measurement uncertainties of mandibular (0.149mm) and maxillary (0.158mm) averages, thereby attesting to the significant final condition of reproducibility. It is concluded that the use of images from iCAT® tomography, as indicated by image resolution with voxels of 0.25mm, in live humans and from transaxial cuts performed systematically with the help of AutoCAD® Software, provides methodological conditions sufficiently favorable for obtaining linear quantitative mapping of alveolar, vestibular and palatal/lingual bone thicknesses, for both the maxillary and mandibular dental arches.

Tomographie par rayons X : correction des artefacts liés à la chaîne d'acquisition / Artefacts correction in X-ray cone-beam computed tomography CBCT

Wils, Patricia 17 November 2011 (has links)
Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is a standard nondestructive imaging technique related to the acquisition of three-dimensional data. This methodology interests a wide range of applications. An industrial CBCT system comprises an X-ray source and a flat-panel detector. Radiographic images are acquired during a rotation of the object of interest. A reconstruction algorithm leads to a volumic representation of the object and a post-processing routine assesses its validity. Accurate quantitative reconstruction is needed to perform an efficient diagsnotic. However, it is challenged by the presence of different artefacts coming from the acquisition itself. This thesis aims at analyzing and correcting those artefacts in a context of industrial micro-tomography. After an introduction to the physical and algorithmic background of CBCT, the artefacts are presented. Our study adresses two major artefacts: beam hardening and scatter radiations coming from the object and the detector. The second chapter reports on the state of the art in secondary radiation correction. A simulation model of the CBCT imaging chain is developed in a Monte Carlo environment. This model is designed to be realistic in order to get an accurate insight on the processes contributing to the final image formation. The third chapter focuses on the built and validation of the simulation tool. Monte Carlo methods are exact but prohibitively slow. Consequently, acceleration and optimization techniques are used to speed-up the calculations without loss of accuracy. A layer model of the flat-panel detector gives some insight on its secondary radiation behavior. More specifically, we demonstrate that a 2D description of the detector would be sufficient to compute its contribution. Our projection tool fits well with the real system. Finally, the last chapter describes our iterative correction method. The noisy initial reconstruction is segmented into different materials and densities and fed to the simulation framework. Beam hardening and secondary radiations are corrected via the volume reconstructed from the difference between acquired and simulated projections. This correction method is shown to be effective on both mono-material and poly-material objects.

Stanovení kapacity rozstřikovacího uzávěru v podmínkách omezeného výtoku / Hollow cone valve capacity in the restricted outflow conditions

Nehudek, Adam January 2015 (has links)
The thesis aims to determine the influence partial or complete submerge of hollow cone valve by outflow on its capacity without space restrictions, by outflow into discharge chamber and by outflow into water tunnel of circular cross section. The valve capacity is for mutual comparability purposes usually characterized by discharge coefficient. Research works have been performed on a spatial hydraulic model of the valve with inlet diameter D = 67 mm and an apex angle of a cone 90°. Values of the discharge coefficient obtained from measurements were statistically analyzed. The dependence of discharge coefficient, expressed by energy head, on submerged level was approximated by an exponential function. Exponent value of this function express the dependance rate of valve capacity on downstream water level. This procedure didn’t demonstrate signifiant dependance downstream water level on hollow cone valve capacity, only on tests at outflow to water tunel showed a low increase in the discharge coefficient partly due to the influence of kinetic energy of the stream flowing out of the tunnel on the energy head and also due to underpressure. Independence of discharge coefficient value on valve head has been prooved for head greather than 232 mm. Also was defined 3 stages of interaction outflow jet from valve and downstream water, some of them may cause on real waterworks structures unfavorable situations (may affect excessive load on valve by pressure pulsations). The presented results allow better evaluation of bottom outlets capacity at higher water levels, when the valves are flooded. Significant effect of sufficient aeration (especially in long water tunnels) on valve capacity was also confirmed. Taking into account on the specifics of hollow jet valves and cone valves, it is possible to generalize some of this resultos on them as well.

Deformation groupoids and applications / Groupoïdes de déformations et applications

Mohsen, Omar 04 October 2018 (has links)
This thesis is devoted to the study of three different questions concerning Lie groupoids and their applications. The first chapter presents some preliminaries on Lie groupoids. In Chapter 2, Witten’s deformation is expressed using deformation to the normal cone construction and the theory of C∗-modules, which allows us to reprove the Morse inequalities. Our method is generalised to the case of foliations. In Chapter 3, we give a simple construction of the deformation groupoid built by Choi-Pönge and Van Erp-Yuncken. Recall that this groupoid describes the inhomogeneous pseudo-differential calculus thanks to the work of Debord-Skandalis and Van Erp-Yuncken. Our construction shows that the deformation groupoid is actually an iterated classical deformation to the normal cone. In Chapter 4, following the work of Antonini, Azzali and Skandalis, we construct an element in equivariant KK-theory that allows us to express the Chern-Simons invariants directly in K-theory. In the appendix we give some reminders about the equivariant KK-theory and the real KK-theory introduced by Antonini, Azzali and Skandalis.
