Internal and External Causes of The Yemeni Civil War Grounded On The Critical Review of the Conflict and Proxy War Theories

Abu Khaled, Dana January 2022 (has links)
The current study targeted the current issue of the Yemeni crisis and activity of the Houthi movement from the point of its internal and external causes. The activity of the extremist groups on the territory of Yemen creates significant national security risks for most of countries of the Arabian Peninsula. In these conditions, it was important to analyze the problem in detail to comprehend and envision future possible resolutions. To analyze the issue under discussion, the paper utilized the conflict and proxy war theories in the international relations (IR) sphere.  In addition, qualitative data was collected and transformed into quantitative materials using quantitative content and discourse analysis methods. The critical analysis of the selected theories led to the recognition of the key theoretical concepts applicable for the study of the Yemeni case. The methodology was applied to review the official speeches of the national leaders of the following countries and organizations: the UAE, the United States, and Hezbollah. Based on the study findings, the paper determined interests of each potential side and proposed a potential strategy to effectively minimize the security risks caused by the movement.

Physical violence and psychological abuse among siblings: a theoretical and empirical analysis

Hoffman, Kristi L. 08 August 2007 (has links)
This study develops and evaluates a theoretical model based on social learning, conflict, and feminist perspectives to explain teenage sibling physical violence and psychological abuse. Using regression analysis and data from 796 young adults, considerable support is found for all three theoretical approaches and suggests an integrated model best predicts acts of violence and abuse among siblings. For physical violence, males and brothers had significantly higher rates. Spousal verbal conflict, patriarchal attitudes towards the distribution of chores among siblings, attitudes approving of the use of physical force during an argument, and sibling verbal conflict were strongly related to sibling violence. For psychological abuse, neither gender nor sibling pair was significant. The most important predictors for abuse were a close maternal relationship, favoritism, parents yelling, sharing property I psychological stress, patriarchal attitudes towards chores, approval of violence, and sibling verbal conflict. The model explains considerably more of the variance in teenage sibling psychological abuse than physical violence, 42 percent and 32 percent respectively. Finally, the study provides directions for future research on sibling violence and abuse. / Ph. D.

Factors Influencing Community Response to Locally Undesirable Land Uses: A Case Study of Bluegrass Stockyards

Lunsford, Terry Logan 01 January 2011 (has links)
Community development is an ongoing issue that faces communities as they develop. This is a case study where two communities where faced with an identical development proposal involving Bluegrass Stockyards. Bluegrass Stockyards a prominent livestock marketing business, located in Lexington, KY needed to relocate its facility and looked at communities in Lincoln and Woodford County Kentucky as possible new locations. By looking at the case of Bluegrass Stockyards this study is able to use Conflict Theory, Growth Theory and Frame Analysis to look at the development process and issues that was associated with this development proposal. With the two communities being faced with the same proposal, and the proposals having different outcomes, the study is able to gain a better understanding of how development occurs within these two rural communities. This study provides information to both developers and community development professionals on what issues will need to be addressed with a livestock marketing center relocation and how the different issues should be addressed in order to make the process more efficient and beneficial to the involved communities.

This dissertation aims to provide an improved understanding of the social consumer movement of vegetarians and vegans, while it summarizes the results of three studies that, taken together, fulfill the twin objectives of analyzing the revolution in videography and analyzing marketplace exclusion. In the first study, the central role of marketplace exclusion in the social consumer movement of vegetarianism in the city of São Paulo is discussed, and the commitment of vegetarians based on their individualized forms of participation and their focus on cultural change is described. The second study of this dissertation discusses the technique of videography and its application to the practice of academic and market research, presenting a protocol that summarizes the rich and detailed understanding of this method in practice. The third study is an example of a published videography that uses realistic conflict theory to observe how different types of people connected with vegetarianism and veganism deal with conflicts within and outside the movement and how these conflicts affects market dynamics. The data are based on 12 months of ethnographic immersion fieldwork that involved visits to 18 vegetarian events, five public demonstrations on the street, and regular visits to five different vegan restaurants, in order to observe and talk to vegetarians and vegans on-site. Extended interviews were conducted with 6 ovo-lacto vegetarians and 27 vegans. The paper concludes with a discussion of the main theoretical contributions, managerial implications, implications for public policy, and limitations and suggestions for further research.

Xenophobia and Intergroup Conflict: An Inquiry Through The Concept of Health A qualitative field study on the perceptions of health among refugees and asylum seekers in Cape Town, South Africa

Viltoft, Clara Dybbroe January 2018 (has links)
Motivated by the ongoing and widespread xenophobia in South Africa, this study explores the experiences of health access and the health sector by refugees and asylum seekers so as to understand intergroup relations, and more specifically the tensions between nationals and non-nationals. In achieving this, an ethnographic fieldwork was conducted in Cape Town, South Africa during Spring 2017; semi-structured interviews with refugees and asylum seekers provide the material for analysis to identify key perceptions on health and xenophobia to shed light on what possible peacebuilding initiatives should address. Key themes uncovered that intergroup violence based on nationality is prevailing in the areas and townships where refugees and asylum seekers live side by side with (black) South Africans. The presence of violence and the fear of risk of violence appear to fuel intergroup resentment and hostility. The lack of social well-being of the refugee became apparent in their frustrations in attaining safety in their everyday life. Moreover, it positions them so that they are unable to improve their own situation and attain health, health access, and health rights. Additionally, it found that a major obstacle to the realisation of health is connected to legal documentation as well as perceived competition for scarce health service. Specifically, it uncovered the perception of assumed hostile attitude (or fear hereof) by nationals among refugees and asylum seekers constitute both visible and invisible access barriers to the public health system and social integration. The application of the instrumental group conflict theory to the ethnographic interview material thus showed that to end what I term ‘norms of protracted social conflict rooted in xenophobia’, refugees and asylum seekers access to and treatment in the health sector is integral for their inclusion into society. It can simultaneously foster relations with the locals and, at the same time, allow for an everyday life wherein the individual can participate in and contribute to the South African society.

Effectiveness of the Kimberley Process and Corporate Social Responsibility in the U.S. Jewelry Industry

Previti, Robert 01 January 2016 (has links)
The United States jewelry industry recognized that the illegal import and trade of conflict diamonds is a matter of serious international and national concern, leading to human rights abuse. As such, human rights and conflicts became the primary impetus for establishing the Kimberly Process (KP) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) policies. The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate the effectiveness of the KP and CSR policies in deterring the use of conflict diamonds in the U.S. jewelry industry. This study was an investigation as to whether conflict diamonds are entering the U.S. jewelry supply chain and a review of the ethics of the U.S. jewelry industry in light of the conflict diamond issue. Conflict theory provided the theoretical framework used to gather data on conflict diamond protocols and on corporate social responsibilities within the U.S. jewelry industry. The sample was composed of 59 randomly selected participants from the U.S. jewelry industry whose opinions were indicative of that industry. Data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially. Multiple statistical tests were used for the data analysis that included regression and the Mann-Whitney U test. The overall results indicated that the KP and the CSR policies were insignificant in deterring the use of conflict diamonds in the U.S. jewelry industry; therefore, the null hypothesis was retained. This study contributed to a better understanding of the ethical dimensions of conflict diamonds and the committed management practices of the U.S. jewelry industry. Positive social change can be realized when respect for fundamental human rights is achieved by the global diamond industry and becomes a requisite foundation for every society to bring an end to the flow of conflict diamonds.

編定工業區開發模式之研究 / The research of projected industrial site development mode

黃明芳, Huang, Ming Fang Unknown Date (has links)
The development of industrial sites in Taiwan has been carried out continuously for nearly 50 years. In 1995, the central government made a decision that they no longer played an active role in developing industrial sites, and thereafter, the task was taken over by local governments as well as host industrialists. The literature that recorded such development shows that some host industrialists encountered difficulty in developing large-scale industrial sites, and also it was difficult to find developers. The problem of the former was caused by the difficulty in looking for large area of land, which was a problem of development entity, and the problem of the latter was caused by no budget arranged by the government, which was a problem of development mode. Thus, in this text, it is considered that a study on “the Development Mode of Projected Industrial Sites” has become essential. The purpose of this study is to explore the subject of fund raising in the process of industrial site development, from the stage of its planning up to its accomplishment, which goes through (1) the theory of market and government: to discuss and verify entity and quantity variation in industrial site development. (2) the discussion about similarities and dissimilarities in transaction cost, agent cost, and conflict cost emerging in the process of development. (3) the analysis and research of transaction cost of development mode through relative literature, legal aspect, and practical aspect, as well as interviewing personnel who took take part in the actual development of industrial sites in order to find out potential problems. As a result of research, it is deemed that the transaction cost in developing industrial sites is lowest when executed by a local government as it holds civic rights and administrative resources, so that turns out to be the best mode in projected industrial site development. It is therefore proposed in this study that when developing projected industrial sites, following measures should be taken: (1) budget planned by the government (2) execution of consolidated development contract for both public and private projects (3) introduction of real estate appraiser system (4) introduction of bank loan system (5) adoption of advance booking for selling and purchasing premises in industrial sites. By taking above supplementary measures for developing industrial sites, the benefits include encouraging developers’ involvement in developing industrial sites, reducing conflict cost arose by mob protest so as to facilitate development process, and further lowering searching cost, negotiation cost, time cost etc. As a result, the purpose of reducing transaction cost of developing projected industrial sites can be achieved, and the efficiency of such development can be elevated.
