Prospective Zimbabwean "A" Level mathematics teachers' knowledge of the concept of a function

Nyikahadzoyi, Maroni Runesu January 2006 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / The purpose of the study was to investigate prospective 'A' level mathematics teachers' knowledge of the concept of a function. The study was a case study of six prospective Zimbabwean teachers who were majoring in mathematics with the intention of completing a programme leading to certification as secondary mathematics teachers. At the time of the study the six prospective teachers were in their final year of study. Prospective teachers' knowledge of the concept of a function was assessed through task-based interviews and reflective interviews. These interviews, which were done over a period of three months, were structured to capture the prospective teachers' subject matter knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge for teaching the concept of a function. The interviews were also meant to capture the prospective teachers' underlining pedagogical reasons for their choices of the examples, representations and teaching approaches when planning to teach the concept. As part of the study a theoretical framework for understanding prospective teachers' knowledge of the concept of a function was developed. The framework, which was developed, was used as an analytical tool in analyzing prospective teachers knowledge of the concept of a function. The results of the study indicated that the prospective teachers had a process conception of a function although some of them had given a set-theoretic definition of a function in which a function is perceived as a mathematical object. They also confined the notion of a function to sets of real numbers. Functions defined on other mathematical objects (for example, the differential operator and the determinant function) were not considered as functions by five of the six prospective teachers.

A case study: U.S. Labour relations with the Trade Union Council of South Africa 1960-1973

Toren, Tolga 29 July 2010 (has links)
Abstract: A CASE STUDY: U.S. LABOUR RELATIONS WITH THE TRADE UNION COUNCIL OF SOUTH AFRICA 1960-1973 The aim of this study is to examine US policies towards the South African labour movement through the American Federation of Labour - Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) and US official institutions, such as the State Department and the Labour Department of the United States, US universities etc. with particular focus on the period between the 1960s and mid-1970s. The study is shaped as a case study. In the study, the labour relations between the US and South Africa in the beginning of the 1960s and the middle of 1970s are examined by specifically focusing on TUCSA. The study is composed to six chapters. Following the first two chapters devoted for introduction and literature review, the developments of the post-Second World War era, such as the internationalization process of capital accumulation around the world, the cold war and the formation process of new international organizations are dealt with. The re-structuring process of the international labour movement under the cold war conditions and the development of overseas labour policies of the ICFTU and the AFL-CIO are also handled in this chapter. In the fourth chapter, the capitalist development process of South Africa in the post Second World War Era is discussed. The capital accumulation process under the apartheid and the developments within the labour movement are the main issues dealt with in this chapter. In the fifth chapter, US investments in South Africa between the beginning of the sixties and the mid seventies and the effects of these investments in the capital accumulation process of South Africa are evaluated. In the last chapter, the main focal point of the study, US labour relations with South Africa between the 1960s and the middle of the 1970s is focused on with particular reference to the relations between TUCSA and the US labour institutions including the AFL-CIO and other official organizations of the US. In the study, a historical framework is developed by focusing on developments in international scale and South African scale. In the third, fourth and fifth chapters, extensive literature on international labour, capitalist development of South Africa, labour history of South Africa and US investments in South Africa is given to elaborate the issue. The sixth chapter, which is the main chapter of the study, is relied principally upon archive materials of TUCSA.

"The only group..." : le rôle du Democratic Leadership Council dans la modernisation idéologique du parti démocrate : 1980-2011 / "The only group..." : the role of the Democratic Leadership Council in the ideological modernization of the democratic party : 1980-2011

Benedic-Meyer, Diane 13 June 2014 (has links)
It is quite difficult for the young generation of Democratic voters who contributed to bring Barack Obama into power in 2008 and 2012 to imagine the electoral losing streak the Democratic Party endured after Ronald Reagan’s electoral victories in 1980 and 1984. Obama owes credit to both his efficient campaigns and the changes which have affected the Democratic Party since the 1980s for winning the executive office twice. The Democratic elected officials certainly had not waited for Jimmy Carter’s humiliating defeat in 1980 to reflect upon the situation but it is during the Reagan years that some Democratic influential members started taking action. The Democratic Leadership Council (DLC) became a key part of a sort of political and ideological aggiornamento which allowed the Democratic Party to rebuild its forces in less than ten years and to win back the executive office in 1992 with Bill Clinton’s election. From the early 1980s to its dissolution in 2011, the DLC devoted itself to the ideological modernization of the Democratic Party.

The general objective of the research was to analyze the participation of the CPS in the deliberative dynamics of the CMS, aiming at understanding the nature and the extent of this institutionalized participation. The driving question was: how did the participation of the CPS in the deliberative dynamics of the CMS of Diadema in the period from 2008 to 2010 take place? Our hypothesis is that the participation of the CPS in the deliberative dynamics of the CMS is institutionalized, the councilors possessing political representativeness as a result of having been directly elected by the population, but also exhibiting liabilities related to their lack of technical qualifications on health issues and to their limited political protagonism, especially with regard to issues of autonomy and articulation with the powers of political and civil society. The basic conceptual references adopted State/Civil Society; health; participation and councils were fundamented mostly on contemporary Brazilian authors. The adopted methodology was that of qualitative research, consisting of a literature review in the areas of Sociology, Social Service, and Collective Health; documental research in the private archives of local leaders, in the Municipal Institute of Studies, in Diadema s municipal offices, among others; fieldwork, comprising the realization of semi-structured interviews with nine research subjects, those being: six CMS councilors, two former mayors and a long-standing leader in the health area. For the analysis of these data, the techniques of documental analysis and content analysis were used. The results of the research show, on the one hand, the relevance of the participation of the CPS in the deliberative dynamics of the CMS, due to the fact that the former s councilors are elected by the users of the healthcare system, and on the other hand, the liabilities of this participation, resulting from both the parallel institutionalization involving the CPS and the CMS and the councilors lack of technical qualifications and limitations in their political protagonism / A presente dissertação teve por objeto a participação do CPS na dinâmica deliberativa do CMS de Diadema/SP, no período compreendido entre os anos de 2008 a 2010.

Les bases administratives du droit constitutionnel français / Administrative foundations of french constitutionnal law

Faye, Antoine 23 March 2016 (has links)
The distinguishing feature of the French constitutional law is the fact that it uses extensively the administrative law. The Constitutional Council acquire notions, tools and ways of thinking from administrative law, whereas constitutional rules make use of administrative institutions or constructs. Meanwhile, the Council of State has both formal and material constitutional abilities. Councillors of State are ubiquitous in rules redaction, notably about the laws, where they perform a constitutional pre-control. Finally, constitutional authors, instructed in administrative law, study the constitutional rulings with administrative litigation concepts. Thus, inquiring into the administrative foundations of constitutional law involve reflecting on the existence of an administrative culture in this field. This culture comes from the singular history of French public law, which required a strong jurisprudence to compensate the constitutional unsteadiness of the 19th century. Also, it comes from the unusual building of the State and nation since absolute monarchy. French administrative law then appears especially like the first and primary source of constitutional law effectiveness until 1958. This permanence brings up questions about the relation between State and citizen, or liberalism and democracy, in an atypical French legal order.

Análise dos elementos de conteúdo do relato integrado: Itaú Unibanco e Natura - 2013 e 2014 / Analysis of the content elements of the integrated report: Itaú Unibanco and Natura - 2013 and 2014

Kussaba, Cristiane Tiemi 08 October 2015 (has links)
Integrated reporting is the disclosure framework that brings together financial, environmental, social and governance issues in a clear, concise, consistent and comparable format in order to understand the process of organization value creation overt time. In 2011, several organizations joined the IIRC Pilot Project and, in 2013, the Conceptual Framework for Integrated Reporting was issued, which has been reference for generating the same. The purpose of this study is to verify how some companies engaged in this IIRC Pilot Project released the content elements proposed in this Conceptual Framework on their 2013 and 2014 Integrated Reports. Therefore, it was carried out the content analysis of the 2013 and 2014 Integrated Reports from Itaú Unibanco and Natura, in order to verify what and how it was disclosed the content elements (categories) and items of content elements (subcategories) by these two companies, making comparisons over the two years. To complement this analysis, interviews were conducted with professionals involved in the implementation of the Integrated Reporting within each company. This is a field research, in which the documentary research and interview procedures were applied. The results indicate changes from the 2013 to 2014 Integrated Reports in terms of how many and how the Integrated Reporting content elements were disclosed in the two companies. Noteworthy, for example, the disclosure of Governance and Strategy and Resource Allocation in the Natura\'s report, which presented all the items proposed in those content elements. In the Itaú\'s report, content element that had greater numerical growth of items disclosed was Governance. Quantitatively, the two companies or continued the same or increased the number of subcategories disclosed over the two years analyzed. Overall, the main points of progress observed on Itaú Unibanco Integrated Reporting from 2013 to 2014 are: greater completeness, more concise presentation of information, expansion of the content of the Integrated Reporting through greater connection with information from other reports, detailing of the company management, the approach of a more long-term vision, greater awareness of senior management engagement in the production of the report, improved disclosure about the governance processes and the expansion of almost all parties of the Integrated Reporting. In Natura\'s report, it is possible to highlight the company\'s Sustainability Vision, which has improved several aspects of the Integrated Reporting, easier understanding in comparison with the previous year, more assertiveness in communication, a greater focus on material issues and on risk management and a more integrated view of the several stakeholders of the company. For future studies, it is suggested the expansion of the sample and the analysis period to verify the effective achievement of the objectives proposed in the Integrated Reporting.

Participação democrática no Conselho Municipal de Educação de Ribeirão Preto / Democratic participation, deliberation and institutionality in the Municipal Educational Council of Ribeirão Preto

Salles, Ricardo de Padua 01 December 2016 (has links)
This research aims to analyze the Municipal Education Council of Ribeirão Preto (CMERP) through three essentials aspects: the outlines of its institutional design, the contentes of its de-liberative processes and the meanings of the participation in its context. We hope this analysis may indicate the paths that have been taken by counselers in the Council\'s participative space, as well as the understanding of its conquers and challenges towards a democratic enlargement. The specific objectives are the investigation on the layout and the institutional operation, the effectivness of deliberative processes and the relations that take place in a conjucture of power sharing between public Power and the civil society. The metodologic approach is qualitative, gathering documental data and collecting semi-structured interviews. The democratic partici-pation phenomenum in Brazil, especially by the means of several participative institutions that were created since the country\'s redemocratization, has generated a wide field of empirical researches that base the democracy as an argumentative deliberation process and aim to evalu-ate gains and difficulties on that path. From this perspective, the results produced whithin a few decades of operations of the participatory institutions gain the centrality of the research agenda in this area, which seeks to measure its ability to turn the relations between public sector and civil society more democratic. For our research, we did the analysis of direct and indirect data gathered on the CMERP - legislation, the minutes of meetings (ordinary and extraordinary), the Ribeirão Preto\'s Educational Municipal Plan, the interviews with advisors and counselors and the field notes. We can say that the Council is in operation and fulfills its legal atributions. The institution has a participation thar markedly fiscalizes do Public Power and educational public policies, with concentrated representation in the fields of municipal education, in special the teachers. Among the challenges in terms of democratic expansion, are the approaching of civil society and the diversification of sectors represented internally.

Responsabilidade socioambiental de empresas fornecedoras de madeira certificada do tipo plantação / Social responsibility of companies supply certified timber the type planting

Busch, Susanna Erica 27 March 2008 (has links)
The deforestations done in Brazil have amplified the perception of society to environmental problems and their results. Because of this awareness, the firms in the lumber sector have been challenged to show the consumers how they have been reducing the social and environmental impacts in their activities. As a form of marketing, many firms, which furnish certified wood, advertise that they are firms that practice social and environmental responsibility. The objective of this dissertation is the analysis of the indicators of the system for forest certification, model plantation forests, of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) used in Brazil; to verify the possibilities of forest certification in the attenuation of the social and environmental impacts in the lumbering sector. A prior reading of the different systems of indicators used for forest certification plantations was done. One hundred and seventeen indicators of the system for the certification of forests of the FSC were selected as being the most relevant. These indicators were sent, in the form of a questionnaire, to 244 stakeholders involved in certification. Each stakeholder was to attribute a note from 1 to 10 for each indicator. In the event that he was not certain of its importance, he would mark the column "Don't know". Twenty two persons responded to the questionnaire. The stakeholders were divided into two groups: 10 stakeholders directly connected to forest certification and 12 indirectly connected to forest certification. The indicators were divided into 4 groups: legal and administrative subjects, forest workers, the community living in the areas surrounding the forest management projects, and environment subjects. A separate analysis was done for each social group. Two firms, active in the forestry section, were evaluated, in a form of case studies, to see how firms with the forest certification of plantation are implanting their programs of social responsibility. It was verified that the stakeholders directly connected with forest certification valorize the indicators for legal and administrative aspects and forest workers. Those indirectly involved with forest certification valorize the legal and administrative approaches, the communities, and ecological aspects. The case studies indicate that the certification of forest management brought improvements in relation to the mitigation of the impacts of the forest operations on the environment, forest workers, and the local communities.
