Art and Transformation under State Repression : The CADA group; art activism as social movement for political resistance during the Pinochet years

Guerra Aredal, Maria Elena January 2017 (has links)
Artist communities are often the first in revolting within a repressive society in the outer marginal borders of state control. This silent revolt takes place in the time period before larger oppositional movements gain momentum. However, the research has been scarce, especially when looking at the specific circumstance of the 17 years long Chilean dictatorship and the social influence that the artists had during this period. This Bachelor thesis will treat the subject and time period from a specific cultural angle, namely the effect the artistic production made by a specific art group, Colectivo de Acciones de Arte (henceforth named CADA) had on the social, and in effect, political discourse in society. CADA, a group of four Chilean artists, sociologists and writers, started collaborating in 1979, applying their artistic endeavors within a social practice that intended to interrupt and challenge the normalized routines of daily life during the Pinochet dictatorship – by utilizing semiotics and signs to reorganize and transform urban behaviors and social discourse. To illustrate the conversation CADAs production held, I will analyze two art works from their total oeuvre, as I am interested in researching the forbidden discourse that the artist movement conducted in Chile at this particular time. During the dictatorship, the official politics regressed to favor cultural symbols and expressions with a patriotic, nationalist and conservative message. This thesis wants to investigate the clash between the rules imposed by the ruling military regime and the actual art scene in Chile.

Global extraction and cultural production : an investigation of forms of extraction through the production of artist-video

Brand, Carina January 2015 (has links)
This research is a practice-based, theory-led, examination of forms of extraction under capitalism. The thesis addresses the question of where and how does extraction take place, both in and outside of the wage relationship. Directly employing Marx's concept of surplus extraction, but further extending the concept of extraction as an analytic tool, artistic method, and identifying its aesthetic form. Through the production of an original body of artistic video work, I explore three disparate sites where 'extraction' takes place and employ Science Fiction methods of narrative, the utopian impulse and the 'alienation effect' to critique global capitalism. Drawing on political economic theory, I argue that these new 'zones' of extraction have; forced the further 'subjectification' of labour; supported continued and on-going primitive accumulation - through the creation of global space/time; and promoted the intensification of both relative and absolute surplus value, through the mechanisation of reproduction and the blurring of work and life, through digital technology. The Video Trilogy sets up a dialogue between - fictionreality and space-time, and situates current readings of global extraction in a future/past space, where the inconsistencies of capital are played out. Extraction as concept is utilised to bring together, and expand on, both theoretical readings of the political economy, and to identify that extraction can be redeployed as a cultural or artistic form. I argue that extraction is mobilised through culture, but more importantly, I identify the specific cultural forms of extraction itself. By situating the research between theory and practice, I am able to represent, or interpret, the forms extraction takes - appropriating, performing and re-making them as material and subject within the videos. The research contributes to current critiques of capitalism, in critical theory, art theory, political economy and art-practice-as-research. The video submission brings together a range of aesthetic styles and techniques to construct an original alien world, which is an allegory of our own.

Duarte, Emmanuel Vitor Cleto 05 May 2014 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-26T14:54:43Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Emmanuel Vitor Cleto Duarte.pdf: 5711140 bytes, checksum: 39f1d41617fc69f2785b291b1a4d0794 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-05-05 / This thesis has as its main objective to evaluate how a banda can achieve sustainability and legitimation within the music market nowadays, without a link with a major company, using "residual forms" from the tradicional companies' model, and "emergent forms" as the digital culture, the network production and a direct contact with their users and consumers. For this analysis, Móveis Coloniais de Acaju, a banda from the cultural scene of Brasilia was selected for a case study and an exemple of this "emergent form", also and and exemple of the "residual" strategies used by the artists, within the perspective of cultural producers, production of "materialities", inside a network culture, supported by the theory of Raymond Wlliams, Jesús Martin-Barbero, and Manuel Castells. With more than a decade as musicians in Brazil, the band gathers many characteristics and is able to answer for a production, comercialization and distribution model that operates away from the major record companies and is able do sustain themselves with significant independence. This way, the trajectory of the band and its main strategies for music production were analysed to understand which are the possibilities for artists that operate outside of the circuit of major record companies. Also within the authors that give theoretical and conceptual foundations we can highlight: Herschmann, Janotti. Jr, Freire Filho, within the evaluation of production and the musical market; Jenkins, Lévy e Castells with the reflection about internet culture, interations, participation and convergency as the focus for production in the Internet; Recuero, Fragoso, e Amaral colaborate ith the metodology/field research and with the evaluation of the production within social networks and blogs. The methodology assumes non excludend perspective or multiple relations such as online and offline; "dominant, residual and emergent"; mainstream (major record companies) and independent artists; production, circulationo, apropriation and use of cultural products. The field research was structured with interviews, musicam market data, traditional press articles and the collection of the band's production from the official site, blog and social networks withing twenty months. The first chapter of the thesis does a music market balance and its main changes to evaluate the context where the band is inserted and makes a paralel within the "dominant form"of the major companies and what appears as an "emergent form" of independent bands that work as networks. Te music industry was on of the first ones heavily impacted for the Internet creation and development. Production and consumption were rapidly impacted. The following section evaluates the band since its formation, their relation with the city of Brasilia and its musical and cultural scene, their roots in the University and the way they articulate with the other musicians as a network to answer for the context they appeared and how they develop in the music market. For the third chapter, the way that Móveis Coloniais de Acaju produce in the Intenet in a collective way and interacting with the fans will be evaluated to understand the strategies for creating, distributing and promoting their musical products.

Persson, Jenny January 2009 (has links)

Konst. Stigma. Identitet. : - En inblick i tatueringskulturen. / Tatoos over time and continents : – as art, stigma and identity

Ellwyn, Troen, Dahl, Jenny January 2010 (has links)
Genom att titta på hur tatueringar, tatuerare och de som tatuerar sig porträtteras i populärkulturen ämnar uppsatsen utröna hur man ser på tatueringar idag.</p> / <p><em> Tattoos over time and continents – as art, stigma and identity</em> explores by a litterature study  the cultural significance of tattoos’s throughout history.</p><p> Tattooing has been practiced by mankind all over the world for thousands of years and evidence also suggests that tattooing was practiced in ancient Greece and in Rome. Many different cultures have used tattooing for a wide variety of reasons and given the tattoos their great cultural and social meaning. Tattoos have been used to mark prisoners, slaves and other stigmatisiced groups, but also as a sign of status and a mark of identity and heritage. Is it possible to find similarities in different tattoocultures, presented in literature, despite differences in both time and place?</p><p> This thesis also explores how tattoos are presented in the field of popular culture today by analyzing two reality-shows: Miami Ink and LA Ink.  The thesis seeks to investigate if some of the ways tattoos have been presented in history can be seen in the way they are presented in popular culture today. The thesis analyses how the tattoos, the tattoo artists and their clients are portrayed in popular culture in order to investigate how tattoos are seen today.  <strong></strong></p>

Ruud, Marianne January 2007 (has links)

Jörnesten, Anders January 2008 (has links)
<p>One important issue in this dissertation is understanding the concept of ambivalence in academic settings. This is addressed in two empirical studies. The first is an interview study on Swedish sociologists, focusing on how they look at and understand their own research as well as their place within academia. The second study is based on political documents and offers two possible perspectives on the historical development of research policy. On the one hand it can be viewed as a linear development toward more commercialized science, and on the other hand it can be viewed as an ongoing struggle between traditionalists and non-traditionalists. An important perspective in the interpretation of the results is Pierre Bourdieu's theory of cultural fields. This theory is especially useful in pinpointing the issues of ambivalence in science, showing how both the sociologists and the political documents can be understandable through the concept of "positions". Another important issue in the dissertation is understanding what type of norms are connected ambivalence in relationship to academia. In the final part of the dissertation, Robert Merton's CUDOS norms and John Ziman's PLACE norms are used to explain both the ambivalence itself as well as what kind of norms are related to different "positions".</p>

När väggarna talar : en gårds historia i relation tills dess interiör / When the walls are speaking : the history of a house in relation to its interior

Cavallin, Isabell January 2010 (has links)
The focus of this essay is a building belonging to a farmhouse in Ljusdal, Hälsingland, called Utigården. The building has wallpaper and mural paintings preserved from the beginning of the 19th century. The aim of this essay is to investigate when, how and why the interior was made as well as by whom. This serves to put a more individual perspective on one certain interior instead of using more general explanations. This knowledge will lead to more knowledge and values being ascribed to this interior and hopefully an increased will to preserve it in the future. It gives us an example of how an interior from this time might look like, how traditional paintings are mixed with modern motives and wallpapers and how all of this together is symbolic and guides us through the rooms. Their aesthetic qualities shows that it was most probably a representative building. Different theories about influnces and inspiration are also illustrated. The mapping of certain social and economical factors serves to show the circumstances for when the interior was made as well as why. Probably the farm was moved between 1802-1806 and this might explain the new building. Different theories of why it was important to invest in these representative building and what different values they might have fulfilled are also discussed in this essay. Representatation, including and excluding factors and aesthetic values are some of them. Two potential painters are discussed as having painted the interior. They are called Arve and HindriksOlle. A possible scenario is created around their connections to Utigården.</p>
