Die navorsingsverslag ondersoek beeldvorming rondom die Kongo/(Midde-)Afrika in die korpus tekste wat opgespoor is, binne die breë teoretiese raamwerk van koloniale/postkoloniale studies, met toespitsing op “Africanism” en “Whiteness studies”. Daar is bevind dat beeldvorming in verband met die Kongo rondom twee hooftrope geskied: die Kongo as Conradiaanse “heart of darkness”, waar barbaarsheid in al sy geledinge hoogty vier; en die Kongo as “Eldorado” – die land wat as 15de-eeuse Afrika-koninkryk beskik het oor ‘n ontwikkelde beskawing en ongekende rykdom - lank voordat dit “ontdek” is deur Portugese seevaarders. Slegs die tyd sal leer. / This study of Afrikaans literary texts on the Congo (DRC) covers 100 years: 1912 – 2012. In 1912 DF Malan became the first white Afrikaner to travel to the Congo and publish a travelogue based on his travels (Naar Congoland, 1913). This thesis investigates the representation of the Congo/Central) Africa in the corpus of texts discovered, within the broad theoretical framework of colonial/postcolonial studies, and the paradigms of “Africanism” and “Whiteness Studies”. The Congo has been represented in terms of two main tropes: the Congo as the Conradian “heart of darkness”, the seat of utter savagery; and the Congo as “Eldorado” – the African kingdom that presided over a well-developed civilisation and untold wealth long before it was “discovered” by Portuguese explorers in the fifteenth century. These main tropes and their sub-tropes function in most Afrikaans texts on the Congo as a continuum and not in absolute contrast. Literary texts of the colonial era (up to the 1960’s) are characterised by Eurocentric discourses in which the imperial/colonial Zeitgeist typically manifests in binary oppositions (primitivism versus civilisation), and tropes like “imperial eyes” (white appropriation of colonial space). Malan’s dream of a Dutch sphere of influence - based on the affinity of Dutch/Flemish in the Congo with Dutch/Afrikaans in South Africa – and extending from Cape Town to the erstwhile Belgian Congo, is reminiscent of the expansionist fervour characterising the imperialist Cape-to-Cairo idea, but is based on the close link between language and nationhood in Afrikaner nationalism. In postcolonial texts the view of the white Afrikaner as ‘n descendant of the idealised Voortrekkers/Angolan trekkers is increasingly deconstructed by re-imagining the Afrikaner as a “white sangoma” or “whiteboy in Africa”, while white fright and guilt are revealed - in a sharply satirical fashion – as the bitter legacy of the white arch-colonialist “Pappa in Afrika”. The colonial project is portrayed as a disaster in Equatoria, while Horrelpoot poses a dystopic vision of the degeneration of Afrikanerdom and Afrikaans in (South) Africa. Whiteness may eventually be erased and replaced by authentic, earthy African colours, or be redefined within a non-hegemonic context (The Poisonwood Bible). O professor iniciante de FLE: desafios e possibilidades de seu trabalho / The FSL beginning teachers: challenges and possibilities of their work

Esta dissertação tem por objetivo estudar a relação do professor iniciante de FLE com sua atividade e seu posicionamento diante das orientações/prescrições para seu trabalho, tendo como contexto de pesquisa uma escola particular de língua francesa localizada em uma cidade no interior do Estado de São Paulo, onde trabalhava a professora participante da pesquisa. O quadro teórico e metodológico que fornece o eixo central deste estudo é o Interacionismo Social (VYGOTSKI, 1984; 2008), de onde se originam suas vertentes também aqui adotadas: o Interacionismo Sociodiscursivo (BRONCKART, 1999; 2004; 2006; 2008; 2010; 2011; BRONCKART; MACHADO, 2004; MACHADO, 2004; 2007; 2009a; 2009b;) e duas das Ciências do Trabalho, a Clínica da Atividade (CLOT, 1995; 2001a; 2001b; 2006a; 2006b; 2008; 2010; 2012; 2013; FAÏTA, 2002; 2004) e a Ergonomia da Atividade dos Profissionais da Educação (AMIGUES, 2002; 2003; 2004; 2009; SAUJAT, 2002; 2003; 2004; AMIGUES; FÉLIX; ESPINASSY, 2014). A fim de analisar nossos dados, além do quadro teórico-metodológico proposto por Bronckart (1999; 2006), servimo-nos também dos estudos de Bulea (2010), Kerbrat-Orecchioni (2006). Maingueneau (1989) e Marcuschi (1999) para enriquecer nossas análises. A metodologia desta pesquisa consistiu na coleta e análise dos documentos de orientação existentes na situação de trabalho da professora iniciante participante desta pesquisa, bem como de duas entrevistas de Instrução ao Sósia (2001b) realizadas com ela e dos diários de aula produzidos pela professora participante, em que ela registrou suas impressões e sentimentos suscitados a partir de suas aulas. Através das análises de nossos dados, procuramos investigar o papel das prescrições (explícitas e implícitas) na situação de trabalho de nossa professora participante, os protagonistas de sua situação de trabalho bem como as implicações do uso da Instrução ao Sósia e dos diários de aula em processos de formação de professores iniciantes. Os resultados de nossas análises revelam a grande influência das prescrições explícitas e implícitas no agir do professor, sendo que elas podem vir a tolher seu poder de agir e prejudicar sua saúde no trabalho (CLOT, 2010; 2013). Vimos que, como protagonistas da situação de trabalho do professor iniciante, há a coordenadora pedagógica, o coletivo de professores e os alunos, instância também prescritora e responsável pelas intenções de mudanças do agir da professora. Finalmente, vimos que as entrevistas de Instrução ao Sósia e os diários de aula podem ser instrumentos que atuam na aprendizagem do métier e, possivelmente, no desenvolvimento do professor iniciante. Sabendo que o estudo do trabalho do professor iniciante pode ajudar a ampliar os conhecimentos do métier do professor (SAUJAT, 2004), ressaltamos a importância desta pesquisa para o campo da formação de professores, não apenas de francês como, também, de outras disciplinas. / This thesis has as its main objective to study the relationship between the FSL beginning teachers and their activity, as well as their position towards the guidance/prescription to their work, having as research background a French private school at the countryside of the state of São Paulo where the teacher who is also the research participant worked. The theoretical and methodological framework that supplies the pivoting point of this research is the Social Interactionism (VYGOTSKI, 1948; 2008), from which come its branches, which were also used in this paper: the Socio-discursive Interactionism (BRONCKART, 1999; 2004; 2006; 2008; 2010; 2011; BRONCKART; MACHADO, 2004; MACHADO, 2004; 2007; 2009a; 2009b;) and two of the Work Sciences, the Activity Clinic (CLOT, 1995; 2001a; 2001b; 2006a; 2006b; 2008; 2010; 2012; 2013; FAÏTA, 2002; 2004) and the Activity Ergonomics of the Education Professionals (AMIGUES, 2002; 2003; 2004; 2009; SAUJAT, 2002; 2003; 2004; AMIGUES; FÉLIX; ESPINASSY, 2014). To analyze our data, besides the theoretical and methodological framework proposed by Bronckart (1999; 2006), we also used the studies by Bulea (2010), Kerbrat-Orecchioni (2006), Maingueneau (1989) and Marcuschi (1999) to enrich our analyses. The methodology of this research consisted of collecting and analyzing the guidance documents which existed in the work situation of the beginning teacher participant of this research, as well as two interviews from Instruction to the Double (2001b) done with her and the teacher\'s diaries produced by the participant teacher, where she registered her impressions and the feelings aroused from her classes. Through the analyzes of our data, we attempted to investigate the role of the prescriptions (explicit and implicit) in the work situation of our participant teacher, the protagonists of her work situation as well as the implications of the use of Instruction to the Double and the teacher\'s diaries in the processes of beginning teachers\' development. The results of our analyzes show the great influence from the explicit and implicit prescriptions on the way the teacher performed, showing that they can come to hinder their power of performing and harm their well-being at work (CLOT, 2010 ; 2013). We realized that, as protagonists on the work situation of the beginning teacher, there are the pedagogical coordinator, the group of teachers and the students, who are also a prescribing instance responsible for the changing intentions on the teacher\'s way of acting. Finally, we realized that the interviews from the Instructions to the Double and the teacher\'s diaries can be tools that operate on the métier learning process and possibly, on the development of the beginning teacher. Knowing that the study on the beginning teacher\'s work may help to broaden the knowledge of the métier of the teacher (SAUJAT, 2004), we highlight the importance of this research in the teachers\' development field, not only for French, but also for other subjects.

Une interrogation sur la nature et les pouvoirs de l’art traverse les journaux intimes de Mircea Eliade, Eugène Ionesco, Mihail Sebastian et Nicolae Steinhardt. Cette interrogation remonte aux débats littéraires de la Grande Roumanie, contexte historique d’où émergent ces écrivains. A cette période est aussi liée leur pratique du journal intime, genre qui caractérise la ‘jeune génération’, groupement de jeunes acteurs culturels lancé par Eliade. Les réceptions (selon le terme de H. R. Jauss) des œuvres d’art que ces quatre auteurs consignent dans leurs journaux intimes permettent d’illustrer trois pouvoirs de l’art mis en relief par leur jeunesse roumaine et leur cheminement après la guerre. L’art a un pouvoir formateur : il les enseigne en leur ouvrant des mondes présentés par les œuvres. Il a aussi un pouvoir nationaliste car, dans le nouvel état-nation roumain, dans le contexte d’une « littérature mineure », l’art tendait à être politisé et l’état roumain pratiqua une politique nationaliste qui n’épargna pas le domaine des arts. Enfin, l’art a un pouvoir thérapeutique car il permet d’aborder des expériences douloureuses telles que celle de la crise nationaliste roumaine, par des voies indirectes et plus attrayantes. Les quatre journaux intimes, établis à partir de textes publiés en Roumanie et en France, font découvrir quatre cheminements qui se croisent et s’éclairent mutuellement, notamment sur leurs relectures difficiles du passé roumain. Le parcours de Ionesco ressort particulièrement comme celui d’une thérapie par l’art et d’un ‘travail de mémoire’, selon le terme de Ricœur, sur son passé personnel et sur le XXe siècle européen. / Reflections about the nature and powers of art pervade the diaries of Mircea Eliade, Eugène Ionesco, Mihail Sebastian, and Nicolae Steinhardt. These reflections stem from the literary debates in fashion in Greater Romania in which all four authors took part. Their practice of diary keeping also goes back to this period. It especially characterized a group of young intellectuals launched by Eliade called the ‘Young Generation.’ The diary genre lends itself well to a type of study H. R. Jauss has called ‘reception.’ The receptions of art in the four diaries illustrate three powers of art. Art has a formative power: it teaches by opening the receiver to the world proposed by the work of art. Art also has a nationalistic power: as an instrument of national-identity building for the new Romanian nation-state, art did not escape the danger of politicization characteristic of so-called ‘minor literatures,’ a term this dissertation discusses, and the Romanian state practiced nationalist policies with regards to the arts. Lastly, art has a therapeutic power: it can help in coming to terms with painful experiences like that of the Romanian nationalist catastrophe by indirect and more attractive means. The text of the four diaries is here established from fragments published in Romanian and in French publications. The diaries reveal four lives that crossed paths and that shed light on each other and especially on the difficult re-readings of the Romanian past. Ionesco’s diary in particular emerges as an example of a therapy by art and of what Paul Ricœur has called a ‘work of memory,’ about his personal history, that of his generation and of twentieth-century Europe.

Facteurs relationnels favorisant le bien-être sexuel au quotidien et à plus long terme chez les couples de longue durée

Thèse de doctorat présenté en vue de l'obtention du doctorat en psychologie - recherche intervention, option psychologie clinique (Ph.D) / Le bien-être sexuel, soit l’évaluation subjective des aspects physiques, émotionnels, cognitifs et sociaux de sa sexualité, inclut la satisfaction sexuelle, les pensées, connaissances, émotions et expériences personnelles en lien avec la sexualité. Il est associé à plusieurs bienfaits physiques et psychologiques et constitue un ingrédient essentiel des relations amoureuses satisfaisantes. Or, la satisfaction sexuelle tend à diminuer pendant la relation et les difficultés sexuelles sont fréquentes chez les couples de longue durée. Il est donc nécessaire de s’intéresser aux facteurs favorisant le bien-être sexuel chez ces couples. Selon le Interpersonal Emotion Regulation Model of women’s sexual dysfunction (Rosen & Bergeron, 2019), des facteurs relationnels, comme les caractéristiques de la relation (p. ex. intimité), les caractéristiques individuelles des partenaires (p. ex. attachement) et les caractéristiques des activités sexuelles précises (p. ex. motivations sexuelles), doivent être considérés dans l’étude du bien-être sexuel des couples. Ainsi, la thèse visait à examiner des facteurs relationnels liés au bien-être sexuel chez les deux partenaires de couples de longue durée de la population générale. À l’aide d’un devis dyadique prospectif, la première étude a investigué le bien-être sexuel de manière globale : elle s’est penchée sur les associations entre l’intimité et la satisfaction sexuelle et conjugale pendant 13 mois chez 145 couples. Les résultats suggèrent la présence d’associations bidirectionnelles entre l’intimité et la satisfaction sexuelle ainsi qu’entre l’intimité et la satisfaction conjugale. Une perception d’intimité plus élevée était associée à des niveaux de satisfaction sexuelle et conjugale plus élevés dans le temps. En retour, des niveaux de satisfaction sexuelle et conjugale plus élevés étaient associés à une perception d’intimité plus élevée dans le temps. La deuxième étude a examiné le bien-être sexuel de façon plus proximale à l’aide d’un devis dyadique à journaux quotidiens (21 jours) : elle a investigué les associations entre les insécurités d’attachement, les motivations sexuelles d’attachement et de soutien ainsi que les émotions ressenties par les deux partenaires de 149 couples lors des activités sexuelles. Les résultats démontrent que les individus présentant plus d’évitement de l’intimité avaient moins tendance à rapporter des motivations sexuelles de soutien, ce qui était associé à des expériences émotionnelles plus négatives lors des activités sexuelles. Les personnes présentant plus d’anxiété d’abandon rapportaient davantage de motivations sexuelles d’attachement, ce qui était associé à des expériences émotionnelles plus négatives pendant les activités sexuelles pour les deux partenaires. Toutefois, les personnes présentant plus d’anxiété d’abandon rapportaient également plus de motivations sexuelles de soutien et cela était associé à des expériences émotionnelles plus positives pendant les activités sexuelles pour les deux partenaires. Les résultats de la thèse mettent en relief l’importance de considérer les prédispositions individuelles, les caractéristiques de la relation ainsi que les raisons pour lesquelles les individus s’engagent dans des interactions sexuelles pour mieux comprendre le bien-être sexuel des partenaires de couples de longue durée. La thèse apporte une contribution théorique de par son investigation de postulats théoriques peu étudiés empiriquement à ce jour. Plusieurs implications cliniques découlent également des résultats et sont discutés dans la thèse. / Sexual well-being, i.e., subjective evaluation of physical, emotional, cognitive, and social aspects of one’s sexuality including, for instance, sexual satisfaction, thoughts, knowledge, emotions and personal experiences related to sexuality, is associated with important physical and psychological health benefits. It is also an essential ingredient of a satisfying romantic relationship for many adults. However sexual satisfaction tends to decrease with the length of the relationship, and sexual difficulties are often a concern for couples in relationship therapy. Thus, there is a need to address factors that may promote sexual well-being in long-term couples. According to the Interpersonal Emotion Regulation Model of women's sexual dysfunction (Rosen & Bergeron, 2019), multiple relational factors, such as relationship characteristics (e.g., intimacy), partners’ individual characteristics (e.g., attachment), and characteristics of sexual activities (e.g., sexual motivations), must be considered when studying couples' sexual well-being. As such, the overall purpose of this dissertation was to examine relational factors related to sexual well-being in both partners of long-term couples in the general population. The first study investigated global sexual well-being by examining its involvement in relationship dynamics with a longitudinal dyadic design. Specifically, this study examined the associations between intimacy and sexual and relationship satisfaction over a 13-month period in 145 couples. The results suggest that the associations between intimacy and sexual satisfaction as well as between intimacy and relationship satisfaction are bidirectional. Indeed, higher perceived intimacy was associated with higher levels of sexual and relationship satisfaction over time. In turn, higher levels of sexual and relationship satisfaction were also associated with higher perceived intimacy over time. The second study examined sexual well-being more proximally using a dyadic daily diary design (21 days). The purpose of this study was to investigate associations between attachment insecurities, attachment- and caregiving-related sexual motives, and emotions experienced during sexual activities by both partners of 149 couples. Analyses revealed that individuals with higher levels of attachment avoidance were less likely to report caregiving sexual motives, which was associated with more negative emotional experiences during sexual activities. Individuals with higher levels of attachment anxiety reported more attachment sexual motives, which was associated with more negative emotional experiences during sexual activities for these individuals and their partners. However, individuals with higher levels of attachment anxiety also reported more caregiving sexual motives and this was associated with more positive emotional experiences during sexual activities for both partners. Overall, the dissertation and its two articles highlight the importance of considering partners’ individual predispositions, relationship characteristics, as well as the reasons why individuals engage in sexual interactions to better understand the sexual well-being of partners in long-term couples. This research makes a substantial theoretical contribution by investigating theoretical assumptions that have rarely been studied empirically to date. Several clinical implications also arise from the findings and are discussed in the dissertation.

Going the distance : a description of commuter couples in Jos, Nigeria

Includes bibliographical references (leaves 193-206) / This thesis describes a family variation among urban Nigerian couples called a commuter marriage. A commuter marriage in this study is defined as a union between a dual earner/dual career couple where the husband and wife have decided to live apart from each other due to work commitments until such a time as is convenient for them to live continuously together again. This separation is mainly undertaken to improve their financial and career prospects. The study seeks to understand what dynamics are involved in a commuter marriage in Jos, Plateau State. The Life Course Perspective, with a focus on the gendered life course perspective, serves as a theoretical framework for this study. The perspective assumes that families undergoing the same transitions are likely to display the same characteristics which may not be necessarily relevant for all families in the same life stage, while the gendered life course perspective acknowledges the gendered context. At the same time the cultural context of the Nigerian society in terms of family norms are taken into account. An overview of commuter marriages, including characteristics of commuter marriages and non-traditional marriages linked to commuter marriages are provided. The differences between established and adjusting couples were repeatedly underlined. The research has an underlying interpretivist paradigm, therefore a qualitative research methodology was deemed best for the study. A semi-structured interview guide and time diaries were used to obtain data from seventeen participants. It was found that a commuter marriage is costly financially, socially and emotionally. An emphasis on the male provider and the wife as the manager of the resources was highlighted. Commuter couples report that their greatest support system constitute their family members who show the most understanding to their situation. Commuter fathers were generally passionate about their fatherly roles, but had conflicting feelings about balancing work and family, feeling the family is losing out. Generally, commuter couples in this study showed a sincere desire for the commuting relationship not to span an indefinite amount of time. / Sociology / D. Phil. (Sociology)
