How can development of capital market affect the imformation effect of dividends in Taiwan

Unknown Date (has links)
The main contribution of this article is that I use the variable of development of capital market as the main reason resulting in the decrease of the likelihood of companies to pay cash dividends and cash dividends payout ratio, and it also weakens the announce effect of cash dividends. There are some results we can see in this investigation. First, through observing the trend of the percentage of cash-dividend –payer firms to all TWSE firms and the trend of market value weighted payout ratio, we can see there is no “disappearing dividends” phenomenon in Taiwan capital market from 1991 to 2010. Second, the development of capital market not only decreases the likelihood of companies to pay cash dividends and cash dividends payout ratio, but also weakens the announce effect of cash dividends. Third, the more shares held by institutional investors, the weaker announce effect caused by cash dividends announcement. However, firms with higher percentage of shares held by local institutional investors are much likely to pay dividends. It somehow means that cash dividends are preferred and respected.

Disappearing dividends: the case of Thai listed firms

Ronapat, Malinee Unknown Date (has links)
The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) is an important source of funds for firms and provides opportunities for investors. However, the economic boom of 1990-1996, the Asian Economic Crisis and the recession of 1997-2002 have affected the performance of firms listed at SET. The dividend policies of listed firms have also been influenced by these fluctuations in the business cycle. This study investigates the phenomenon of disappearing dividends in the developing capital market of Thailand. It adopts a similar methodology to Fama and French (2001) by classifying listed firms in line with changes in their dividend polices over the period 1990 to 2002. More specifically, the study explores the characteristics of firms which pay dividends, non-payers, former payers and firms which have never paid dividends. These characteristics include profitability, investment opportunities and firm size. The analysis uses firm characteristics for predicting the dividend policies of listed firms. Changes in firm characteristics and the propensity to pay dividends are identified in this process. The analysis suggests that firms which pay dividends tend to be large and highly profitable, although they possess low investment opportunities. The study also suggests that the characteristics of firms which paid dividends changed slightly before the crisis of 1997 and changed markedly during the crisis. However, after the crisis (1998-2002) the characteristics of firms are similar to those observed before the crisis. This result is attributed to the fact that some firms have resumed paying dividends after briefly ceasing this payment during the crisis. More importantly, when firm characteristics are held constant, the propensity to pay dividends of listed firms declined slightly before the crisis and declined strongly after the crisis. Consequently, the majority of new firms and many mature firms do not pay dividends. The findings of this study are consistent with the results of Fama and French (2001), particularly with regard to the characteristics of firms and changes in the propensity to pay dividends. However, this study extends the knowledge on the phenomenon of disappearing dividends by focussing on a developing economy, Thailand. Finally, this study suggests that investors should consider the characteristics of firms, changes in these characteristics and the propensity to pay dividends when identifying opportunities for investment.

Climate Change, Disappearing Islands and thePerception of Climate Justice : A Content Analysis of the Perception of Climate Justice from thePerspective of Small Island States

Nilsson, Amanda January 2022 (has links)
The objective of this thesis was to establish how, in an emerging era of sinking islands andincreasing environmental degradation, ideas concerning climate justice have been developedin pacific small island states. These ideas have been analysed from a framework of southernand justice theory and, hence, been put in comparison to the global framework of climatejustice and the notion that sovereign states, no matter location or historical circumstances, areleft alone to deal with the worst effects of climate change. The research questions used to achieve the objective were: what ideas of climate justiceare produced in Kiribati, Fiji and the Maldives; in what way do these ideas affect their local adaptation strategies and how can these ideas be understood in light of southern theory? Thedata consisted of three national policies from the countries of interest in this thesis – Kiribati,Fiji and the Maldives – and manifest each country’s approach to dealing with the impacts of achanging climate and, especially, rising seas. These were analysed through a qualitativecontent analysis where an abductive approach was used to establish the themes that guided theanalysis. The result was that ideas of climate justice in the three countries are affected by thechanging tides, both by nature and the international community, but differ depending onnational leadership. It was also found that the adaptation strategies, while being nationalpolicies, all emphasise the need for international solidarity if being able to solve the issue ofdisappearing islands. This is something that has yet to take place within the global frameworkof climate change, where the global North do not want to acknowledge any responsibility forthe fate of small island states but rather aids affected countries based on goodwill and not oflaw.

/Répétition/ (mot barré) : la non-représentation du vouloir-dire et le dernier retour de l’histoire de l’art par le dispraître / /Repetition/ (crossed) : non-representation of “vouloir-dire” and the Last Return of the History of Art by Disappearing

Son, Ji min 28 June 2017 (has links)
From its Platonic source, the ideal of embodiment of Idea must face individualities which are (pre)determined and qualitatively different – and are themselves repetitions repeated. It must become “what-is-wanted-to-be-said” or “meaning” (“vouloir-dire”) of the person who endeavors to realize it and to attempt to exceed the ontological limits of representation. Meanwhile, the unrealizability of pure repetition of the “vouloir-dire” – like any other “subject matter” – testifies to the absent presence of the same in the process of its realization; each and every repetition is always already a differential repetition, and its act itself always susceptible to be taken as mimetic in practice. When we “create”, we search for the absolute difference (singularization) while aiming at a universality of the “vouloir-dire”, Univocity. Put another way, it is the inevitability of the differential repetition (“newness”) that repeats itself and moves towards the last outcome that is meant to be unique in itself and intersubjectively understood and judged. Does this inevitability point towards a (or the last) insurmountable theoretical stalemate – “an end”? How do artists, art-historians, and philosophers deal with this problem? Between the origin and the future of art, what sort of force of repetition do we have to look for in order to finally no longer repeat “one repetition for all”?

Tematizace problému dohledu a moci v kinematografii / The thematization of the issue of surveillance and power in cinematography

Šára, Filip January 2015 (has links)
The goal of this thesis The thematization of the issue of surveillance and power in cinematography is to introduce Michael Focault's theory of power, and add to it with other theories of surveillance with regard to the electronic age (Surveillance studies). Subsequently these theories and hypothesis are applied to qualitative analysis of chosen films with the theme of surveillance. Findings should show the cinematographic reflection of the issue of surveillance and power, de facto depiction of theory and practice of surveillance studies (emphasising the use of power in institutions like prison, hospital, school or working environment, which are heterotopic "other spaces") in live-action movies. The thesis shows development within the past 30 years which took place also due to the existence of internet, which is a kind of institution too. Hypothesis: it is obvious in films with surveillance theme that the concept of the use of power is evolving from "body as a machine" (M. Foucault) to "disappearing bodies" (D. Lyon). The choice of films is analysed only with regard to their depiction of surveillance, is mainly based on the list of movies with surveillance theme constructed by a German theorist D. Kammerer. The goal is also to broaden this list with examples of other films since it should emphasise...

Die Stadt als Bühne sehen – die Veranstaltungsreihe „Disappearing Berlin”

Bruglacher, Marie-Therese, Eitel, Verena Elisabet 08 May 2023 (has links)

Rašymo polimorfija Ričardo Gavelio prozoje / Polymorphy of writing in ričardas gavelis’ fiction

Grigaitis, Mindaugas 23 June 2014 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / POLYMORPHY OF WRITING IN RICARDAS GAVELIS‘ FICTION ‘The Polymorpy of Writing in Ricardas Gavelis‘ Fiction‘ focuses on the analysis of Ricardas Gavelis’ fiction and discusses how the situation of a human being is outlined in the context of a changing cultural situation. The idea has been developed that Gavelis‘ fiction tries to rebel against all mental forms that suppresses identity. This author creates a polymorphous writing which can be described as alogic, nihilistic and sensual narration that destroys socialistic ideology, provincial patriotism or metaphysical stagnation of culture and with the variety of writing’s forms helps to ‘defend’ free and plural consciousness. The main theoretical ideals are taken from Roland Barthes and Julia Kristevas‘ concepts of writing. It is though that synthesis of these concepts helps to reveal the real variety of Gavelis‘ writing. The first part of the research focuses on the analysis of Barthes’ concept of writing and it’s connection to Kristeva’s concept. It is discussed how formalistic-structuralistic concept of subject and writing can be seen in the light of psychoanalytical ideas. Forms, signification, polymorphy – these are the object of the analyses in the first part. The polymorphy of writing means than Gavelis uses different ways to express the meaning in each novel. The second part of the research focuses on analyses the polymorphy writing in of Gavelis’ fiction. The aim of the analyses is to show how the variety of writing... [to full text]
