Nutrient subsidies in the coastal margin: implications for tree species richness and understory composition

Miller, Rebecca 01 May 2019 (has links)
The subsidized island biogeography hypothesis proposes that nutrient subsidies, those translocated from one ecosystem to another, can indirectly influence species richness on islands by directly increasing terrestrial productivity. However, the lack of a formal statistical model makes it difficult to assess the strength of the hypothesis. I created a formal subsidized island biogeography model to determine how nutrient subsidies, in addition to area and distance from mainland, influence tree species richness. My model showed that an increase in terrestrial nitrogen abundance results in a decrease of tree species richness. Soil and plant δ 15N values were higher than expected and it is likely that nutrient subsidies from the marine environment are responsible for 15N enrichment. However, the range of observed nitrogen abundance is similar to inland coastal-zone forests, indicating that islands are similarly nitrogen deprived and may not be receiving enough nutrient subsidies to alter productivity. Tree species decline may therefore be more strongly related to the environmental conditions leading to patterns of nitrogen abundance rather than the abundance of nitrogen itself. Additionally, I proposed that bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) are vectors of nutrient subsidies, depositing nutrient-rich guano at nest sites, which could alter soil chemistry and vegetation composition. In an exploratory study of seven nest sites, I found higher soil phosphorous at eagle nest sites relative to control sites (~ 33% higher). Phosphorous is a limiting nutrient in coastal temperate forests, additions help to alleviate chlorosis and slow growth especially when paired with nitrogen. Higher potassium concentration also occurred on eagle-inhabited islands but was not associated specifically with current nest sites, perhaps reflecting differential persistence of macronutrients in the soil. Despite expectations, soil δ 15N abundance was not statistically higher at eagle nest sites. Total soil nitrogen was also not statistically higher at eagle nest sites. There were no significant differences between vegetation composition at eagle nest sites and reference sites, but reference sites tended to be dominated by shrub species. Indicadores de avaliação de capital natural e de oferta e demanda de serviços ecossistêmicos para a Região Metropolitana de Curitiba / Evaluation indicators of natural capital and of supply and demand of ecosystem services in Metropolitan Region of Curitiba

Amanda Silveira Carbone 20 February 2019 (has links)
This research is situated in the field of territorial planning and urban sustainability, with focus on biodiversity conservation and ecosystem service provision. The assumption is that urbanization, while stimulating economic, social and cultural progress, has driven problems such as environmental degradation and lack of sanitation and that it is necessary to plan the territory at the metropolitan level, aiming at maintaining natural capital and providing ecosystem services essential to human well-being and quality of life in a sustainable way. Thus, the objective of this study was to propose a set of indicators for the evaluation of natural capital and ecosystem services on metropolitan regions, having as an empirical cut the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba. The set of indicators was built from a theoretical basis and then validated by experts using the Delphi method. The set of indicators proposed and validated presents flexibility for application in different contexts. The situation in the MRC demonstrates a trend of degradation of natural capital and consequent impairment in long term water provision, with emphasis in the Ribeira river basin. It is necessary to expand implementation of policies to protect biodiversity, to stimulate the creation of new conservation units and to strengthen the monitoring of land use.

Application à un modèle d'écosystème marin / On ANOVA decomposition and Sobol' indices estimation. Application to a marine ecosystem model

Tissot, Jean-yves 16 November 2012 (has links)
In the fields of modelization and numerical simulation, simulators generally depend on several input parameters whose impact on the model outputs are not always well known. The main goal of sensitivity analysis is to better understand how the model outputs are sensisitive to the parameters variations. One of the most competitive method to handle this problem when complex and potentially highly non linear models are considered is based on the ANOVA decomposition and the Sobol' indices. More specifically the latter allow to quantify the impact of each parameters on the model response. In this thesis, we are interested in the issue of the estimation of the Sobol' indices. In the first part, we revisit in a rigorous way existing methods in light of discrete harmonic analysis on cyclic groups and randomized orthogonal arrays. It allows to study theoretical properties of this method and to intriduce generalizations. In a second part, we study the Monte Carlo method for the Sobol' indices and we introduce a new approach to reduce the number of simulations of this method. In parallel with this theoretical work, we apply these methods on a marine ecosystem model.

Effect of UV-B radiation on plant litter decomposition in a tropical ecosystem on the north coast of the State of Sao Paulo, southeast Brazil / Efeito da radiação UV-B na decomposição da serapilheira em um ecossistema tropical no litoral norte do Estado de São Paulo

Marinho, Osmarina Alves 04 December 2017 (has links)
The solar radiation in general and UV radiation in particular has been recognized to stimulate plant litter decomposition through photochemical mineralization of photosensitive organic molecules, such as lignin, facilitating microbial decomposition, with great relevance role in dryland ecosystems where microbial activity is low, however little is known about how photodegradation could influence other ecosystems without moisture limitations and under what conditions may be favored, therefore the mechanisms has not yet been established. Decomposition in tropical ecosystem is a complex process and can be induced by a number of environmental factors with certain differences when compared to arid and semi-arid ecosystems. To assess the mechanisms underlying UV-B photodegradation, we designed a 300 days field experiment at a tropical ecosystem with high levels of annual precipitation and exposure litter to three levels of radiation combined with a biocide treatment. Results show that the removal of UV-B radiation decelerated plant litter decomposition during the later stage compared to litter exposure to full sun, however shaded litter had similar mass loss compared to litter exposed to full sun. Furthermore, differences in the decay constant among radiation treatments due to UV-B effect is independent of lignin loss. Overall, our study suggest that UV-B contributes to the plant litter decomposition through carbon losses, however, had no effect on nitrogen, neither lignin nor cellulose loss. However, more studies are needed in order to investigate the positive and negative effects of UV exposure on microbial activity in tropical ecosystems.

Une étude de cas : l'halioticulture biologique en France / Three factors which influence the course of domestication of marine species. A case study : the French abalone organic farming industry

Riera, Fabien 15 December 2017 (has links)
Abalone aquaculture (Haliotis spp.) or halioticulture provides a good case study of the technical, social and environmental challenges of introducing newly domesticated marine organisms into the market. Abalone farming began in Japan in the 1960s and, according to FAO (2012), is now one of the most dynamic aquaculture industries in the world. Yet all attempts have not met with the same success. This essay aims to understand the factors that have allowed or hindered the environmental, social and technical success of halioticulture, with an emphasis on France.More specifically, we examine three main categories of factors that may explain its evolution:- The importance of socio-ecological factors in the management of abalone resource.- Socio-cultural factors that support the status of the abalone as an eligible resource for aquaculture.- The role of science in the industrialization of abalone farming.

Comportamento geoquímico do mercúrio (Hg) em solos de manguezais do estado de São Paulo / Geochemical behavior of mercury (Hg) in mangroves soils from São Paulo State

Mara Lucia Jacinto Oliveira 08 February 2006 (has links)
Coastal ecosystems at São Paulo State show a condition of environmental degradation, due to high density of population and presence of industrial and petrochemical poles. The disposal of urban, industrial and harbor wastes into water bodies result in indiscriminate accumulation of pollutants in estuarines soils. Mercury (Hg) constitutes one of the most dangerous pollutants for the ecological balance and human health, because of its high toxicity and potential for bioaccumulation and biomagnification through the food chain. The current study aimed to: (a) determine total content of Hg in mangroves soils from Baixada Santista region (Cascalho, Mariana, Crumahú and Irirí rivers and COSIPA Channel) and Cardoso Island; (b) verify the effects of sample pre-treatments to determine Hg in mangrove soils; (c) analyze chemical parameters related to the geochemistry of Hg; (d) evaluate the distribution of total Hg in the most relevant fractions of mangroves soils using sequential extraction technique. An enrichment in total Hg was observed in the superficial layers of Baixada Santista and Cardoso Island soils, although there was no regular pattern of total Hg distribution at the studied profiles. Mangroves soils from Cascalho River and COSIPA Channel showed high Hg concentrations (5,65 mg.kg-1 e 1,64 mg.kg-1, respectively), characterizing highly polluted areas. Soil samples from Cubatão River, close to Cascalho River, showed total Hg values greater than the alert level established by CETESB. Due to the great data variability the effects of sample pre-treatment were analyzed by comparing the total Hg contents in fresh samples without previous drying and grinding treatments with samples dried by liofilization without later grinding; samples submitted to pre-drying treatments at 25°C and grinding, samples submitted to pre-drying treatments at 180°C and grinding. Since water content may vary from one sample to another, the establishment of total Hg content in fresh samples can be the main cause of results variability, in addition to the non-uniform distribution of root, organic matter and textural variations. The use of liofilized and ground samples may contribute to the analytical precision. Regarding Hg geochemistry, data obtained from Eh-pH correlation evidence that most samples are located in the elemental Hg stability field and, in a smaller proportion, in the HgS stability field, favoring elemental Hg formation and pyritization process. Sequential extraction data show that Hg is mainly associated to the pyritic fraction, followed by the most reactive fractions (soluble, exchangeable, carbonates, ferrihydrite and lepdocrocite fractions), and the fraction corresponding to crystalline iron oxides.

Serviços ecossistêmicos hídricos em paisagens florestais fragmentadas: um caminho para a conservação da Mata Atlântica / Water ecosystem services in fragmented forest landscapes: a way for the Atlantic Forest conservation

Vivian Cristina dos Santos Hackbart 12 December 2016 (has links)
The possibility of elaborate planning in forest areas from notion of ecosystem services, especially water services, expanded in a short time, mainly because this strategy shows how the loss of this natural system by human activities can cause losses irreparable to their own well-being. Working environmental planning under this approach requires the adoption of a strong theoretical basis for water services; a model for comparing landscapes under different conditions of use and conservation of forest; and insight about the type of valuation used in the identification of the limits of forest loss in order not to compromise the necessary supply of these services. This study argued that in the Atlantic Forest is possible to recognize the direct dependency between amounts of forest, human uses and water services in watersheds and, through it, assess the provision of these services and compare landscapes. In order to defend this argument were selected 27 territorial units of the Vale do Paraíba region (Sao Paulo, Brazil) from the application of a spatial model based on the extraction of river basins originating hexagons intersection with percentages of forest, anthropic field and forestry. In each unit were obtained data from 13 physical-chemical-biological parameters in two seasons, which were ranked by Random Forest in order to support its relations with the amount of forest as well as the index formulation for seven water services. The parameters more suitable for monitoring water in front of services to forest gains, and with large hierarchical influence the formulation of the indices, were turbidity, conductivity and total dissolved solids. The indices obtained allowed to point out that to keep 50% of the total potential of the seven water services in landscapes with anthropic fields (pasture) are required more than 40% forest cover, but the best servi4e potential gains occurred from 60%. When the territorial unit is a combination of forest and forestry there is more supply of water services with less forest, but the management of timber and the presence of degraded areas completely changed this favorable scenario

A abordagem \"ecossistema\" em teoria organizacional: fundamentos e contribuições. / The \"ecosystem\" approach in organizational theory: foundations ans contributions.

Rodrigo Kazuo Ikenami 21 July 2016 (has links)
This dissertation is an attempt to push forward the knowledge boundary concerning the construct \"ecosystem\" placed in the organizational theory, precisely within the innovation management field. The investigation was considered important because it arouses the interest both of the scientific community than the managers and entrepreneurs. After the literature review, which included the most important publications about the theme, it came to our sight that this approach use concepts of different theories, mainly the system theory, the value chain and the network theory. Along with this finding, this study arrive to the following research question: \"How does the Ecosystem approach explains - in an original basis facing the value chain and the network theory - the entrepreneurship activity in technological startups?\". From this debate, an insight sparkles, saying that the ecosystem logic offers more benefits during the instability phases of a business, when the way to follow is uncertain. This feature, assuming to be right, would be particular useful for organizations placed in dynamic markets, which are environments surrounded by uncertainties. In order to test this hypothesis, four propositions were formulated: (P1) The ecosystem logic has good adherence in startups, because it can adapt to the changes that were not expected in the first planning scope; (P2) because the value chain do not consider the complementors, it loses capability to evaluate a business startup; (P3) the value chain is a tool for continuous improvement , and therefore, have difficulties to deal with disruptive changes that modifies an organization stable state; (P4) mapping a network is complex and costly, hampering its practical execution. The investigation of these propositions was conducted through semi structured interviews performed with four startups. Concerning to the proposition (P1), we concluded that beyond the adaptation expected in the first place, the ecosystem can also suggest objective goals to be chased so that the ecosystem can survive and evolve to the next stage. The proposition (P2) was also confirmed in the field research, suggesting that the complementors have significant relevance on the client\'s value perception regarding the focal firms\' offer. Besides, this research also proposes that not every complementors should be tracked from the focal firm, but only the ones that are at the technological innovation boundary edge. The proposition (P3) couldn\'t be verified in this study while the proposition (P4) needs more investigation to a reliable conclusion. The research concludes with a positive perspective about the ecosystem, believing it is a promising approach for organizations residing in high velocity markets. Since this is an exploratory study we strongly suggest that the investigations do not end in this dissertation, where is presented some possible paths so that this work can be continued.

Diversidade da comunidade de fungos em solos de manguezais do Estado de São Paulo / Diversity of the fungal community in mangrove soils of the São Paulo State

Cristiane Cipola Fasanella 25 October 2012 (has links)
Mangroves ecosystems make up a transition biome between land and marine environments, particular occurring in tropical and subtropical regions. Within this environment, the microbial diversity plays an important role in nutrient cycling. However, the diversity of fungi in mangrove is still poorly studied, as well as the establishment of ecological relationships between these organisms and the environment. In this sense, this study aimed to compare the fungal diversity in the sediment of two mangroves located in the city of Bertioga [an oil-spilled mangrove (OilMgv) and a nearby unaffected mangrove (AntMgv)]. Analyzes were based on culture-independent methods, such as PCR-DGGE based on the ITS region (internal transcribed sequence), which showed complex patterns and an abundance of bands, allowing the observations of groups selected for each mangrove and each region inside the same mangrove. The construction and analysis of clone libraries showed the dominance of fungi affiliated with the phyla Ascomycota and Basidiomycota, with a remark for the occurrence of the genera Epicoccum, Nigrospora e Cladosporium. A more robust approach, performed by pyrosequencing, allowed better visualization of these communities, corroborating the previous results, reinforcing the differential occurrence of fungi groups in assessed mangroves (based on sequencing of the ITS region amplicons), and allowing the observation of other eukaryotic groups in these areas (metagenômica analysis).

Parisot, Xavier 06 July 2015 (has links)
Biotechnologies mobilized today in bio-industries require skills that companies can no longer control alone. The development of disruptive innovations involves a multidisciplinary approach requiring the intervention of several industrial sectors that is opposed to proprietary innovation logic. Transversality necessary for these collaborations between private companies and public sectors and or between industries from different business sectors profoundly changes the nature of organizational models chosen by firms. Among all the models adopted, the business ecosystem (BE) occupies a more and more central place in bio-industries. The optimization of the associated logical innovation has become a challenge that even the institutions are trying to respond by supporting the adoption of open innovation logics (OI) and the development of BE. Yet, the nature of these two notions is still discussed and there theoretical combination remains poorly understood. Although case studies show that BE support their development on OI in knowledge based industries, nature and implementation sequence of underlying concepts remain to be determined. Moreover, the debate remains regarding the ontological and epistemological limits of OI and BE notions. This thesis seeks to clarify these elements and determines what role is played by the OI in the emergence of BE in the French bio-industries.The ontological analysis of BE notion reveals the purely metaphorical transpositions made by Moore from ecology to establish its definition. Therefore, the analogical approach supported by a part of the scientific community can't be applied to establish the epistemological limits of BE notion. The ontological nature of OI notion remains uncertain. Nature of inter-organizational information flows and dynamic capabilities of firms are jointly mobilized. This uncertainty is not permissive to the achievement of an epistemological analysis, therefore dynamic capacities here were chosen as theoretical foundations of the OI notion. The epistemological analysis of the development of BE notion demonstrates the application of a recursive loop in its construction. Moreover, it reveals the existence of a substantive theory behind the BE notion, theory which mobilizes a sequence of concepts implemented successively in the emergence of BE. The OI is one of mobilized notions. The epistemological posture adopted in this thesis is that of critical realism. It allows the inclusion of the recursive loop. It is suitable for the approach by grounded theories. It integrates intrinsic and extrinsic circumstances justifying how generating mechanisms are activated. It allows the formulation of founding ontological assumptions. This choice preserves Moore's implicit epistemological posture, legitimizes the value of its grounded approach, assumes the ontological assumption made about the foundations of OI notion, and takes into account both environmental and organizational factors justifying the emergence of BE. The resulting methodology is qualitative. It goes through a comparison of two case studies based on secondary data analysis. Contextual factors of each case are correlated to reveal the generative mechanisms justifying the role of OI in the emergence of BE.The results confirm the implementation sequence of concepts proposed by Moore in the emergence of BE in the French bio-industries. They precise the place of OI in this sequence by specifying its role in the transition from collaboration to co-evolution of firms within BE. They confirm that BE is not an organizational model in itself, but an inter-organizational stance promoting the adoption of appropriate models.
