Family support in high ability students from different socio-educational contexts / Apoyo familiar en escolares de alta capacidad intelectual de diferentes contextos socioeducativos

Castellanos Simons, Doris, Bazán Ramírez, Aldo, Ferrari Belmont, Aldo Mauricio, Hernández Rodríguez, César Alberto 25 September 2017 (has links)
This work aimed to analyze the perceptions of family support of school learning in 79 high intellectual ability 6th grade students from three educational contexts in Morelos, Mexico: urban (public, private) and rural indigenous schools. The students answered the SAGES-2 (Johnson & Corn, 2001) and the Family Support Questionnaire of Bazán & Domínguez (2009). Significant differences were only found between the three contexts in the perception of regular communication with teachers in Language (Spanish), which wasperceived more frequently in students from private schools, regardless of the area of abilities. This communication was perceived the least in students from rural indigenous schools. The results emphasize the importance of family and socioeconomic variables to understand the manifestation, development, and education of high ability students from different cultural contexts.

The translation of children's literature in the South African educational context

Kruger, Haidee 28 May 2010 (has links)
Abstract Research on the translation of children’s literature in South Africa is currently in its nascent stages. This study aims to provide a comprehensive descriptive overview of current practices in the translation of children’s literature in South Africa, particularly against the backdrop of the educational context. It espouses a broadly causal view of translation, but also encompasses a comparative and process model (see Chesterman, 2000). Translation is used to a significant degree in the production of children’s books in South Africa. However, it is not clear exactly to what degree translation is utilised, nor is there any information available about how translation contributes to the production of children’s books in South Africa. This study addresses these questions. Based on survey research among publishers, and the analysis of publishing data, it finds that there are significant differences between the ways in which translation is used in the production of children’s books in the various languages in South Africa. Specifically, translation is used much more extensively in the African languages than in Afrikaans and English, with a correspondingly lower incidence of original production in the African languages. Furthermore, the educational discourse has a profound effect on the uses of translation in the production of children’s books in South Africa. However, the educational discourse has a greater determining effect on the production of books for children in the African languages than in Afrikaans and English. Theoretical discourse surrounding domestication and foreignisation is particularly problematic in the South African context, and findings from a survey among translators indicate that translators from different language groups have different opinions about whether children’s books should be translated using domesticating or foreignising approaches. The above findings broadly deal with the contextual dimension. They are concerned with how social, ideological and material factors and discourses affect the ways in which translation is used in the production of children’s books in South Africa. At this point the matter of translation theory is introduced. It is questioned to what degree contemporary context-oriented translation theory manages to provide a satisfactory explanation of the South African situation. It is argued that polysystem theory and Toury’s (1995) concept of translation norms provides some explanation of the translational dynamics evident in the production of children’s books in the different languages in South Africa. However, some aspects of the South African situation do not neatly “fit” into polysystem theory, and some parts of the theory therefore have to be mediated or reconsidered, particularly utilising postcolonial and more ideologically sensitive perspectives, to satisfactorily account for the South African situation. This reconsideration leads to a conception of the relationship between translation and its context that is less binary and determinist, with a greater emphasis on hybridity and fluidity. This contextual dimension of the study spills over into the textual dimension. All of the above contextual and process-oriented factors finally find their precipitation in actual translations. By means of close analysis of a sample of 42 (21 translations and their source texts) English and Afrikaans children’s books intended for leisure reading and for educational reading, this part of the study investigates the norms evident in the selection of children’s books for translation, as well as the operational norms evident from the translations. The key questions here are why particular texts are selected for translation, and how cultural markers in these texts are handled in translation. The analysis demonstrates that the selection of books for translation (preliminary translation norms) is dependent on contextual as well as textual factors, with ideology and function playing particularly important roles. These roles differ for different types of books, books of different origins, and books in different language pairs. In terms of the operational norms, translators’ opinions about domestication and foreignisation do not necessarily correspond to translation practices. Rather than an exclusive, binary adherence to domesticating and foreignising approaches, analyses of the operational norms evident in translated children’s books demonstrate a hybridised mix of domesticating and foreignising strategies, which vary according to the type of book, the origin of the book, and the language pair involved in the translation process.

Home-based literacy experiences of severely to profoundly deaf pre-schoolers and their hearing parents

Stobbart, Carlin Lillian 17 April 2007 (has links)
The low literacy levels achieved by deaf children are of ongoing concern to educators and researchers alike. The present research considered emergent literacy as one aspect to consider in the acquisition of literacy skills in deaf children. The aim of this research was to describe the home-based literacy experiences of severely to profoundly deaf pre-schoolers as provided by their hearing parents. Parents of twenty-nine pre-school deaf children from schools for the deaf were selected to complete a questionnaire. The questionnaire was developed based on the four identified literacy contexts: the physical and functional context, the language context, the affective context and the educational context. The results obtained indicate that the deaf children in this survey are exposed to literacy-rich home environments where they are able to observe literate adult role models. Limitations in the quantity and quality of text-based interaction between the deaf pre-schoolers, their hearing parents and older siblings were identified. The results also indicated that the parents who participated in this research regarded the development of language and communication as more important than the early acquisition of literacy skills. The parents assigned the greatest responsibility in teaching literacy skills to teachers. This study highlights the sensitive nature of early literacy and language learning in young deaf children. Suggestions for further research are presented. / Dissertation (M(Augmentative and Alternative Communication))--University of Pretoria, 2005. / Centre for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (CAAC) / unrestricted

Values of the french tenses passé composé and imparfait in the metalinguistic culture of polish speakers. For a contextual didactic grammar

Starosciak, Katarzyna 05 July 2013 (has links)
If we consider that grammar is an intellectual construct and not a natural object and therefore it may takes various forms depending of the linguistic context, why should it be the same for native speakers and foreigners? This study is located in the Polish context of teaching / learning of French as a foreign language. In particular, it concerns the passé composé and imparfait, the use of which is often the first hurdle for Polish students learning French. This is due to the fact that descriptions which are suggested to polish students, rarely take into account the fact that the passé compose and the imparfait respectively, don’t have the same aspectual value as the perfective and the imperfective verbs in polish. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop a contextualized description of the tenses in question, which would be more operational for Polish learners, being based on their metalinguistic culture rather than traditional descriptions. For this purpose, we’ve analyzed the ways of expression of four types of knowledge circulating in the Polish educational context in relation to the passé composé and imparfait. These include knowledge from scholars of linguistics, knowledge disclosed by various forms of didactic transposition, knowledge derived from professional experience of teachers and finally the so-called "colloquial" knowledge, which consists of linguistic representations of Polish students.

The impact of the educational and sociolinguistic contexts on teaching/learning of French in the Souf, through the analysis of representations as a tool of description

Boudebia-Baala, Afaf 19 December 2012 (has links)
The specificity of this context has been studied following two different but complementary axes: the sociolinguistic environment and the institutional framework. Both axes have been defined from the thematic analysis of declarative data gathered from a group of teachers and learners. In order to connect the views of teachers/learners, we chose to triangulate the data gathered using several tools: questionnaires, interviews, word association tests and writing. The thesis takes an approach that is both qualitative and quantitative. Our goal is to determine the impact of the sociolinguistic and educational contexts on the teaching/learning of French in the Souf using the representations as a tool of description. The results indicate that several parameters produce a negative impact on the teaching/learning of French. The most important are : the absence of linguistic practices in French, linguistic attitudes, social environment, representations of languages, inadequate academic curriculum, the reduced number of hours devoted to teaching/learning, reduced importance of  the teaching of French in the educational system, and recruitment of unqualified teachers. Some of our findings can be used in order to contextualize means to influence teacher training and linguistic representations in the learners

The arrival of the communicative approach is related to the changes in language conception in the end of the 20 century. Language seems now to be understood as a complex communication web with meanings for social interaction. Based on Richard and Rogers (20010, by this conception, the communicative dimension of language is emphasized and grammatical aspects are taken to a second plan in the language classroom where the process seems to be so important as the result of the activities. In that view, the language classroom becomes a changing knowledge and interaction environment where cultural aspects of a society are parts of the development of the communicative competence. By the view of the communicative approach, know a language is not just learning the structure of a language but the others culture to solve problems in different communicative situations. For the learner, the approach of cultural subjects in the classroom is responsible to understand his culture face the others. How it s believed the approach that presents more positive results in developing efficient speakers, is worth investigate how the approach is applied in different learning contexts. For that, we are going to analyze portuguese classes for the students of Law from the University of Macau teached by a brazilian professor in his first year on that institution. In that specific context, we are going to investigate the development of a communicative class for the Chinese students and the possibilities of an intercultural approach. Identify the intercultural approach is possible when there is interaction in the classroom once the students have to exchange knowledge to solve language problems. According to this view this research is based on a material and its use in classroom by a brasilian teacher. The material, which designed based on brasilian movies is the base of this research. The results of the analyses, also based on a questionnaire and an interview showed that the communicative approach wasn t possible in the observed classes. The difficulty in using that kind of approach in the chinese context must be because of the cultural factor and/or the no adjustment of the method by the professor. That s why we have to consider the educational context to define and adjust our methods.

Evaluation of usability and user experience of an m-learning environment, custom-designed for a tertiary educational context

Harpur, Patricia-Ann 12 November 2013 (has links)
Undergraduate software engineering learners demonstrate a lack of motivation with face-to-face classroom education. Limited access to the Internet via PCs and laptops, hinders effective communication and collaboration. However, the majority of learners enrolled for studies in tertiary education, have cellphones and are proficient in the use of digital technology. A technology-enhanced m-learning solution is indicated. This research project evaluates the usability and user experience of an m-learning environment, custom-designed for a tertiary educational context and delivered by mobile handheld devices, features a synthesized framework of categories and criteria, and determines the nature and scope of an emergent digital divide. A design-based research model suited to the context of the study is implemented, gathering quantitative and qualitative data from experts and learners by survey questionnaires. Analysis of data highlights usability and UX problems, provides insight into an emergent digital divide and suggests guidelines specific to the design of m-learning implementations.

Härnström, Alexandra, Bergh, Isak Eljas January 2023 (has links)
The world's technological development is advancing rapidly, especially when it comes to "smart" machines and algorithms with the ability to adapt to their surroundings. This is partly due to the enormous amount of available data and partly thanks to increased storage capacity. In November 2022, one of the latest AI-based programs was released; the chatbot ChatGPT. This web-based software can engage in real-time conversations with users by answering text-based questions. By quickly, and often accurately, answering users' questions in a human-like and convincing manner, the service has generated a lot of attention in a short period of time. Within two months, ChatGPT had over 100 million users. There are several studies that show how a large number of people lack a general trust in AI. Some studies argue that the responses generated by ChatGPT may not always be assumed to be completely accurate and should therefore be followed up with extensive fact-checking, as otherwise they may contribute to the spreading of false information. Since trust in AI has been shown to be an important part of how well the technology develops and integrates, a lack of trust in services like ChatGPT can be a hindrance to effective usage. Despite the increased productivity observed in the implementation of AI technology in companies, it has not been integrated to the same extent within higher education as an aid for students. By determining the level of trust that students have in ChatGPT in an educational context, valuable information can be obtained to assist in the integration of such AI technology. However, there is a lack of specific research on students' trust in ChatGPT in an educational context. Therefore, this study aims to fill this knowledge gap by conducting a survey. Our research question is: “What trust do students have in ChatGPT in a learning context?”. The survey was conducted through semi-structured interviews with eight students who have used ChatGPT in an educational context. The interviews generated qualitative data that was analyzed using thematic analysis, and the results showed that students' trust in ChatGPT in an educational context depends on several factors. During the analysis, six themes were identified as relevant for answering the research question: • Experiences • Usage • ChatGPT’s character • Influences • Organizations • Future trust
