Procurou-se compreender através dos debates acerca das mudanças da cultura a evidência do corpo nas resistências e como um espaço de produção de novas subjetividades. O contexto dessa pesquisa tem como objetos: a produção de Cassandra Rios em seus romances e a linguagem plástica trabalhada nos objetos, performances e instalações de Márcia X. O modo de escrita de Hélio Oiticica é um dispositivo utilizado para aproximar as duas artistas. Dessa forma, analiso criticamente os diferentes tratamentos estéticos da força explosiva da sexualidade. / [en] The dissertation develops a critical discussion body as mediation producer and erotic pulse receiver. It tries to realize through of discussions about the changes of the culture of evidence in resistence body, and , as a new production space subjectivities. The context of this research has as objects: Cassandra Rios production in her novels and plastic languagecrafted the objects, performances and Device for Marcia X. The Helio Oiticica s writing man-ner is a device used to bring the two artists. Thus, I critically analyse the different aesthetic treatments of the explosive power of sexuality.

The study consists of the book`s translation, from French to Portuguese, followed by a reading of the poems, a review of Bataille s theory of poetry and also some issues on the translation experience that is thought to be proposed in terms of Bataille`s poetic experience.

Printed Bodies: Gender Politics of Imagetexts in Colonial India, 1874-1945

My dissertation studies gender and politics in printed imagetexts in colonial Bengal. It covers the period from the publication of the Bengali Punch Magazine, Basantak, in 1874 to the circulation of anti-imperial newspaper gags during WWII. At the core of this project are colonial illustrated periodicals—the quintessential mediums of colonial modernity and pedagogy, and the bearer of anticolonial imagetexts. The dissertation analyzes printed imagetexts like comics, cartoons, caricatures, newspaper gags, posters, and advertisements in periodicals and their effects on anti-imperial thought and the politicization of colonial popular culture. Imagetexts are synthetic mediums where ‘image’ and ‘text’ compositely create meaning. I argue that the printed imagetexts understood nationalist politics and gender through the stereotypes of English-educated babu, native politician, and the urban clerk. Imagetextual satire, for anticolonial and nationalist politics, framed these three stereotypes as both the oppressor and the oppressed in relationship to which other genders were conceived in colonial Bengal. These imagetextual stereotypes provided the bases for imagining the self and the other and a set of sensibilities, practices, and modes of sociability that defined late colonial South Asia. The circulation, co-existence, and deployment of these satirical discursive models for decolonial projects in English and vernacular illustrated periodicals stemmed from the nineteenth-century phenomenon of print erotophobia—the national and imperial fear of Indian erotic literature. I examine the imagetextual satire born in the wake of this print erotophobia at the intersections of class, gender, and nationalist politics. This cultural history of imagetexts also draws attention to the fictional properties of the colonial archival documents, which served as mediums of political exclusion and representation, history-recording, storytelling, and articulating nationalist sentiments.

Thesis (MA (Afrikaans and Dutch))—University of Stellenbosch, 2005. / The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between eroticism, violence and death as it occurs in Jeanne Goosen's short story collection, ' n Gelyke kans. The research is based upon the hypothesis that these stories express in a particular manner the transgressive role of eroticism in breaking through social conventions and barriers. As a possible framework for discussion reference is made in the first place to George Bataille's theories on the subversive nature of eroticism, Julia Kristeva's semiotic and pre-Oedipal theories, and Mikhail Bakhtin's notion of the carnivalesque. Subsequently a reading strategy was designed by means of an in-depth analysis of ten stories from the collection in accordance with general formalistic principles. The conclusion is reached that Goosen with non-judgmental sympathy exposes man's inborn, continuous search for the illusion of perfect happiness. This state of bliss is sometimes achieved by the violent "incorporation" of the beloved/desired “other", and the final outcome is a concomitant and inevitable decline into an unwholesome, destructive, and fatal erotic power play.

Thèse de doctorat réalisée en cotutelle entre l'Université Paris IV Sorbonne et l'Université de Montréal / Des affinités rapprochent l’œuvre d’Hubert Aquin et celle de Georges Bataille. Ces deux auteurs explorent une voie mystique présentant de fortes similitudes, apparentée à ce que Roger Caillois appelle le « sacré gauche », c’est-à-dire le sacré impur, maléfique, dont l’accès serait donné selon Georges Bataille par la transgression, et qui correspondrait, pour reprendre l’expression bataillienne, au « moment privilégié d’unité communielle ». L’objectif de l’auteur français est de dégager l’expérience mystique de ses antécédents religieux et de rendre le phénomène de l’extase accessible à tous. La sortie de soi est rendue possible par la communication, qui implique la rupture de son intégrité et de celle d’autrui. Bien que provenant d’un horizon culturel différent, Hubert Aquin théorise également et met en scène dans et par le récit une certaine forme d’«extrême du possible » qui s’avère très proche de « l’impossible » bataillien. This thesis aims to show how Georges Bataille’s theories of «inner experience » and eroticism highlight Hubert Aquin’s essays, Journal and novels, leading us to define the peculiarities of the mystic experience explored by the author from Quebec, and more generally and fundamentally, to focus on two different ways to think and to live the refusal of transcendence: the first, that of Georges Bataille, which consists in embracing the loss of God and of ourselves in laughter, and the second one, that of Hubert Aquin, which consists in being ceaselessly and painfully torn between what takes away from the Christ and what moves closer to Him. The first chapter of the thesis is theoretical; it is dedicated to three key concepts for our whole analysis: mysticism, sacred and eroticism. The object of the second chapter is the peculiarity of the new mystic theology of Georges Bataille in his theoretical texts compared to the traditional mystic experience. The third and last chapter shows the points of convergence and the differences between the French author and the author from Quebec and emphasizes the specificity of the latter’s experience. How does Hubert Aquin conceive and represent «the extreme of the possible » in his writings? It is the ultimate question we try to answer in this thesis.

Todos os livros de prosa de Hilda Hilst possuem personagens velhos, e o erotismo é uma das principais linhas de força de sua obra. Este trabalho procura relacionar esses dois elementos e, ao mesmo tempo, oferecer um panorama da prosa hilstiana e de algumas de suas problemáticas mais recorrentes. A construção de personagens, as imagens do vazio e a caracterização do estilo da autora são eixos que estruturam cada um dos três capítulos, nos quais se abordam, ainda, questões como a construção do espaço literário e as investigações filosóficas contidas no texto ficcional. Em diálogo com ensaístas como Simone de Beauvoir, Georges Bataille, Edward Said, entre outros, a dissertação parte da compreensão da velhice e do erotismo como elaborações estéticas para buscar as imagens e operações formais usadas por Hilst em sua ficção. / All of Hilda Hilsts prose books feature aged characters, and eroticism is one of the main strengths of her literature. This work seeks to relate these two elements and, at the same time, offer an overview of the Hilstian prose and some of its most recurrent issues. The construction of characters, the images of emptiness and the characterization of the authors style are axes that structure each one of the three chapters, in which questions such as the construction of literary space and the philosophical investigations contained in the fictional text are also addressed. In dialogue with such essayists as Simone de Beauvoir, Georges Bataille, Edward Said, among others, this dissertation departs from the understanding of old age and eroticism as aesthetic elaborations to seek the images and formal operations used by Hilst in her fiction.

As últimas décadas do século XIX foram marcadas por grandes transformações na sociedade brasileira. Além do fim da escravidão e da instauração do regime republicano, assistiu-se a um significativo crescimento das cidades, o que impactou o estilo de vida das classes instruídas e os valores herdados do sistema patriarcal. Em A musa de espartilho, o erotismo na poesia parnasiana brasileira é investigado em suas possíveis relações com seu contexto histórico-social, levando-se em conta as continuidades e descontinuidades com a sensibilidade romântica. Quatro poetas são estudados: Raimundo Correia, Alberto de Oliveira, Francisca Júlia e Luiz Delfino. / The last decades of the nineteenth century were marked by major changes in Brazilian society. In addition to the end of slavery and the establishment of the Republican regime, there has been a significant growth of cities, which impacted the lifestyle of the educated classes and the inherited values from the patriarchal system. In A musa de espartilho (The muse wearing a corset), the eroticism in Brazilian Parnassian poetry is investigated in its possible relations to its historical and social contexts, taking into account the continuities and discontinuities with the romantic sensitivity. Four poets are studied: Raimundo Correia, Alberto de Oliveira, Francisca Julia and Luiz Delfino.

[pt] O presente estudo constituiu-se como uma investigação de possíveis intercessões entre as experiências dadas pelo erotismo, a mística e a poesia, essa última entendida dentro do contexto grego de poiésis que extrapola os limites do gênero literário, caracterizando-se principalmente como experiência estética de uso consciente da língua. O direcionamento teórico principal foi dado pelo pensamento de Georges Bataille, para quem tanto o amor- paixão quanto a mística religiosa e a poesia são experiências limites de alteridade que revelam a existência de um movimento dialético (sem síntese) entre os interditos que fundam o corpo social e a transgressão dessas mesmas leis. Nosso estudo buscou explorar as intercessões entre as formas de erotismo que Bataille analisa - o erotismo dos corpos, dos corações e sagrado - e a poesia, que o autor menciona como uma quarta forma de erotismo sem desenvolver argumentação mais precisa. Desta forma, nossa hipótese é que possa ser aplicado à poesia, senão todas, algumas das principais características que Bataille aponta no erotismo, definido por ele como experiência em que o ser se põe em questão. A reflexão das questões propostas por Bataille exigiu que fossem abordadas as especificidades da experiência religiosa na contemporaneidade, e a discussão de alguns conceitos da ciência da religião, como por exemplo, uma definição de sagrado que pudesse ser aplicado não apenas a experiências religiosas institucionalizadas, algumas reflexões sobre o pensamento mítico-religioso e a compreensão do caráter primitivamente sagrado da linguagem e do mito. A partir da compreensão da importância do mito para o pensamento mágico-religioso e da constatação de que o mesmo constitui-se a linguagem apropriada para comunicação com as instâncias do sagrado, formulamos a hipótese que a poesia pudesse ser interpretada, em uma sociedade desencantada como a nossa, enquanto solução de continuidade para o mito, sendo ela intrinsecamente religiosa, no sentido em que propõe um salto para fora dos limites do interdito em direção às forças anímicas do sagrado, esse entendido no contexto batailliano. Tencionando clarificar hipóteses e argumentos, foi tomada para um estudo de caso a obra da poeta mineira Adélia Prado, onde foram apontadas e discutidas as relações entre erotismo, mística, palavra poética, sagrado e morte. / [en] The present study was constituted as an investigation of possible intercessions among the experiences given by the eroticism, mystic and poetry, understood in the Greek context of poiésis that extrapolates the limits of the literary gender, being characterized mainly as aesthetic experience of use conscious of language. The main theoretical approachly was given by Georges Bataille s thought, for who as much the love-passion as the religious mystic and poetry are limits experiences of otherlity that reveal the existence of a movement dialectic (without synthesis) among the injunctions that found the social body and the transgression of those same laws. Our study looked for explore the intercessions among the eroticism`s forms that Bataille analyzes - the eroticism of bodies, of hearts and sacred - and the poetry, that the author mentions as one Wednesday forms of eroticism without developing more necessary argument. Our hypothesis is that it can be applied to the poetry, or else all, some of the main characteristics that Bataille appears in the eroticism, defined for him as experience in that the being puts in subject. The reflection of the subjects proposed by Bataille demanded that the specificity`s of the religious experience were approached in the contemporanity, as well as the discussion of some concepts of the science of the religion, as for instance, a definition of sacred that it could not just be applied to institutionalized religious experiences, some reflections on the thought mythical-religious person and the understanding of the primitive character sacred of language and of myth. Starting from the understanding of the importance of the myth for the thought magic-religious person and of the verification that the same is constituted the appropriate language for communication with the instances of the sacred, we formulated the hypothesis the poetry to be interpreted, in a society disenchanted as ours, while continuity solution for the myth, being her religious, in the sense in that it proposes a jump outside of the limits of the injunction towards the psychic forces of the sacred, that understood in the context batailliano. Intending to clarify hypotheses and arguments, it was taken for a case study the work of the poet Adélia Prado, where they were pointed and discussed the relationships among eroticism, mystic, word poetic, sacred and death.
