A cidade fictiva: visões e mundos da cidade em contos contemporâneos brasileiros, chilenos e portugueses / The concept of \"fictive city\": he city that is born specifically of literary aesthetic construction by Brazilans, Chileans and Portuguese writers

Lima, Paula Andrea Vera Bustamante de 15 May 2007 (has links)
This research paper puts forward the concept of \"fictive city\", understood as the city that is born specifically of literary aesthetic construction. This concept enables one to discover the foundations of the city in literature as from the earliest texts of literary creation in the West (Enuma Elish, the Gilgamesh Epic), in order to detect their main characteristics and examine how these constitute building blocks of contemporary Brazilian, Chilean and Portuguese tales in which an idea of \"tale from the city\" can be perceived. The study of the fictive city sets out certain paradigms, found in a number of different texts, such as La Ciudad está Triste, by Chilean author Ramón Díaz Etérovic, \"Timotu Kalu\", by Origenes Lessa, \"Passeio Noturno I e II\", by Rubem Fonseca, and \"A tua véspera de Natal\", by Portuguese author David Mourão-Ferreira. In addition to these paradigms, certain possible worlds of the fictive city are established, taken from a comparative analysis of the tales: \"Amor\", by Clarice Lispector, and \"La Elegida\", by Chilean Lilian Elphick; \"Una señora\", by Chilean José Donoso, and \"Sem Remédio\", by Luiz Ruffato; \"Busca\", by João Antônio and \"A Bota\", by Portuguese José Rodrigues Miguéis.

Fictive responsibility : why all novelists are political writers (whether they like it or not)

Hayhurst, Lauren Amy January 2017 (has links)
This PhD is part novel and part thesis. The novel, The Girl Upstairs (TGU), is in three parts. Parts one and two are included here in full. A synopsis of part three is included in the appendices. The thesis presents an original “action model” for Creative Writing (CW) called “fictive responsibility”. TGU can be treated as a case study, demonstrating the practical application of this new model. TGU follows a Bengali-Muslim family as they confront the wayward behaviour of Kifah Rahman, a feisty sixteen-year-old. Set somewhere in south-west England, Kifah’s misadventures start when she discovers an envelope discarded in a drawer. The address is her mother’s childhood home across the city, but she’s never heard of the addressee, Zubi Rahman. Kifah sneaks off school to investigate. Kifah’s clandestine visits incite rumours and soon Kifah is accused of tarnishing the family’s reputation. TGU confronts the difficult subjects of “honour”-based-violence (HBV), domestic violence and “crimes-of-passion”. By exploring different types of violence-against-women (VAW), TGU shows how perceived differences in, for example, “culture”, religion, or heritage, rather than dividing us, can present new ways to connect across moral values or lifestyles, ultimately promoting togetherness and empathy between different cultures. The thesis explores how the “political” relates to “literature” through the writer’s creative process, suggesting that all novelists are inherently politicised individuals and fictions are produced through an inherently politicised process. The significance of this is undermined by those who claim fiction writers just “make it up”. Failing to recognise the “politics of representation” that operates alongside invention in CW has contributed to the recent exacerbation around “cultural appropriation”. For some writers this presents a threat to “free” expression. For others, “free” expression must be treated with respect, especially when fictionalising characters that appear external to the writer’s own experience. Theoretical and conceptual analysis is drawn from cultural studies, ethnography, literary criticism and philosophy. Case studies include fictions with Muslim female characters in a post-9/11 setting. In addition to literary analysis, the thesis explores how “authenticity” interacts with an author’s perceived affiliation with characters or themes within the fiction.

Effect of sonication on thermal, mechanical, and thermomechanical properties of epoxy resin

Sharma, Bed Prasad 01 December 2009 (has links)
Epoxy resin is an important engineering material in many industries such as electronics, automotive, aerospace, etc not only because it is an excellent adhesive but also because the materials based on it provide outstanding mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. Epoxy resin has been proved to be an excellent matrix material for the nanocomposites when including another phase such as inorganic nanofillers. The properties of a nanocomposite material, in general, are a hybrid between the properties of matrix material and the nanofillers. In this sense, the thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties of a nanocomposite may be affected by the corresponding properties of matrix material. When the sonication is used to disperse the nanofillers in the polymer matrix, with the dispersal of the nanofillers, there comes some modification in the matrix as well and it finally affects the properties of nanocomposites. In this regard, we attempted to study the thermal, mechanical, and dynamic properties of EPON 862 epoxy resin where ultrasonic processing was taken as the effect causing variable. Uncured epoxy was subjected to thermal behavior studies before and after ultrasonic treatment and the cured epoxies with amine hardener EPICURE 3223 (diethylenetriamine) after sonications were tested for mechanical and dynamic properties. We monitored the ultrasonic processing effect in fictive temperature, enthalpy, and specific heat capacity using differential scanning calorimetry. Fictive temperature decreased whereas enthalpy and specific heat capacity were found to increase with the increased ultrasonic processing time. Cured epoxy rectangular solid strips were used to study the mechanical and dynamic properties. Flexural strength at 3% strain value measured with Dillon universal testing machine under 3-point bending method was found to degrade with the ultrasonic processing. The storage modulus and damping properties were studied for the two samples sonicated for 60 minutes and 120 minutes. Our study showed that the 60 minutes sonicated sample has higher damping or loss modulus than 120 minutes sonicated sample.

The present work aims at describing and analyzing the Fictive Motion Constructions of Brazilian Portuguese(FMC) such as “A Estrada vaiaté a praça…” and “A veiapercorretoda a extensão do braço…”. These constructions use a motion verb with a static theme. As theoretical basis we use the constructs of Cognitive Linguistics (TALMY, 2000; LANGACKER, 1987, 1999, 2008; FAUCONNIER, 1997; FAUCONNIER; TURNER, 2002) and the Usage–based Models of Grammar (LANGACKER, 1987, 1999, 2008; GOLDBERG, 1995, 2006; GOLDBERG; JACKENDOFF, 2004). For methodology, we chose Corpus Linguistics instruments (SARDINHA, 2004; SILVA, 2008) that provided conditions for the construction of a specific corpus, containing 536 examples of FM constructions. The first one and its variations presented 34 types and 372 occurrences; the second one, and its variations, 16 types and 164 occurrences. It’s assumed thatCMFs cognitive motivation comes from conceptual blending processes which integrate an experience of motion domain to a visual domain related to the extension described. This integration promotes a visual scanning of this extension. The conceptual motivation allows the FMC to evocate, in its semantic–pragmatic pole, a space qualifier conceptual matrix which focuses on area, dimension, location, shape, position and direction domains. In pragmatic dimension, FM constructions have descriptive function and make possible the mental reconstruction of static scenes. About discursive environment, we found great number of FMC in genres academic and fiction. They are also related to conversational topics such as anatomy, tourism, geography, urbanism, construction, clothing and routes explanations, because these topics have, as its central subject, trajectories or extensions conceptualized as trajectories. Therefore, our analysis locates FMC as a specific construction standard inside the construction network of Brazilian Portuguese. Besides, our work aims at contributing for the description of a new construction network, related to movement verbs. The analysis of FMC brings out the role of conceptual blending at new constructions building. It also attests the relevance of Cognitive Linguistics embodied language approachand the vision of language as an inventory of constructions shaped in discourse.

Rose-Dabrunz, Kathrin 05 October 2016 (has links) (PDF)

Territoire virtuel, identite réelle : la plasticité identitaire sur Internet / Virtual territory, real identity : plasticity of identity on the internet

Lukasiewicz, Claude 09 December 2009 (has links)
Through a student survey carried out from more than 2 400 people in 19 different college courses, we analyzed the Internet as a tool revealing real identity, nothing so much as the different identity expressions and virtual territories a subject can use, than the reasons he invokes for connecting to the Internet. Starting from the hypothesis that the cyberspace is not only a communication and interaction space, but also a psychological or symbolic one, as well as an identity expression place, our work aims to determine the deeper motives which come along or replace the motivations the individual puts forward to justify his connection. The multidisciplinary theoretical frame of the two first parts of our work is at the junction of three approaches. The first one is based upon the territory study as a constituent factor of the individual and collective identity. The second one deals with the study of identity concept works, restricted to the individual scope and his psychological mode. The third one stresses upon works about the setting up and practice of computer-mediated communication, more specifically the Internet, as well as, consequently, the generated societal mutations, and the brought out plasticity of identity. Our survey is developed in the third part of our work. It enabled us on the one hand, to gather our students’ thoughts according to four themes: their own representation of the Internet, their fears or hopes about this new communication tool, the social impact it could generate, and the space transformations it could cause. On the other hand, to study the Internet tool as a mediator / reflector in the identity building process and psychological mechanisms it brings out.
