Larsson, Emma January 2019 (has links)

Gym going male’s view on the use of doping agents. : How social background and masculinity depictions affect attitudes of the usage of doping agents.

Ideström, Erik January 2019 (has links)
Author: Erik Ideström Title: Gym going male’s view on the use of doping agents. How social background and masculinity depictions affect attitudes of the usage of doping agents. [Translated title] Supervisor: Lars Sörnsen The aim of this study is to examine views on the use of doping agents among gym going males. More specifically it examines if the view on masculinity and social background have correlations with the view on using doping agents. The study uses a web survey on two different populations, one is specific gym members and the other is two internet forums. The participants of the study were gym going males in the ages between 18 and 51. The analysis builds on three theories: hegemonic masculinity, symbolic capital and habitus. The study’s results points towards a positive correlation between having a hegemonic view on masculinity and being positive towards the use of doping agents. The study also found a correlation between a good childhood and a negative view on using doping agents. The study concludes that there is a correlation between a hegemonic view on masculinity and a positive view om doping agents.

"The Body is Made to Move" : Gym and Fitness Culture in Sweden

Hedblom, Christina January 2009 (has links)
Ideas about "exercise" and "health" have varied over time and across cultures. With the recent Euro-American fitness trend, a growing number of Swedes now take part in some kind of physical activity at Gyms or Fitness Centers. By applying a phenomenological and constructivist approach, the aim of this ethnographic study is to examine the non-profit but also commercial culture of and around this form of exercise. The focus is on how meaning is created, transformed, embodied, and perceived by gym goers as truth, science, knowledge, or even myth. There are two central overlapping concerns in this thesis, both dealing with the interrelation between categories, and status positions. The first part of the thesis deals with the social aspects of movement, such as the definition and categorization of self and others as different types of gym-goers. Related to this are also what is termed critical norms of interpretation of aims and reasons for exercise, such as gaining strength or aesthetic improvement. The other central concern is more specifically focused on the body itself and deals with ideas about exercise, diet, substances, and physiology, that is, how to exercise and how the body works. "The body is made to move", was a common saying at Gyms and Centers, meaning that the human body is physically built to be active. But the techniques and practices of how this movement is performed vary and are sometimes even contradictory. Here sources in the distribution of ideas about the body and body movement are brought out: the Internet, informal and formal instructors in the Gym, as well as gym machines. The method has been participant observation and in-depth interviews with gym goers and instructors at Gyms and Fitness Centers in two middle size towns in Sweden mainly during a year in 2004-2005. Rather than taking sides in the debate on how to exercise, this thesis raises wider questions about the authority to define reality.

Nord, Erika January 2015 (has links)
This article give an account for my process when creating a concept of information texts about weight training. The information describes how common exercises should be performed properly and are placed directly in the gym. As a case I use the gym Parsa Power in Uppsala. The clients there are Omid Parsa, founder, and Ulrica Lindkvist, co-owner. To create the concept this study examines what catches the attention of the target group in the particular environment with many distractors and how to appeal the target group, with words. The work is based on what the clients want, what the target group needs and various research findings and theories of attention, rhetoric and layout principles. Used methods include a focus group and a survey.

Ekberg, Theres, Bergqvist, Agnes January 2018 (has links)
Background Strength training has many positive health aspects, however, injuries are common. There has been no previous research comparing the injury prevalence of strength training on your own in the gym and at bodypump, two strength training exercise performed in slightly different ways, but both focusing on strength.   The aim was to investigate whether there were differences regarding injury prevalence, type of injury between strength training on your own in the gym and bodypump and if there were any differences between men and between women, respectively. The study also aimed at investigating and describing the factors that seemed to have caused injuries in strength training on your own in the gym and at bodypump.   Method The study had a descriptive and comparative design. A total of 60 people from SATS Sofo participated in the survey, 30 people who did strength training on their own in the gym and 30 people participating in bodypump. Data was collected by respondents to a self-designed questionnaire with questions about their training and possible injury and cause of injury.   Results Differences in injury prevalence were seen between strength training on your own in gym and bodypump, p=0,01. On the other hand, no differences were observed regarding men’s injury prevalence (p=0,09) and in women (p=0,06) respectively, between the two types of exercise. There were also no differences regarding the type of injury between the two types of exercise (p=1), nor in men (p=1) or in women (p=1).   Conclusion There is less risk for injuries at bodypump than at strength training on your own in the gym. More and larger studies are needed to be able to generalize the type of injury, cause and gender differences.

Cesaro, Humberto Luís de January 2012 (has links)
This paper is about a group of men that works out in a south Porto Alegre‟s gym and their body care and ways to achieve the contemporary esthetic patterns. The theoretical approach that bases this study faces the discussion about masculinities, foucaultians theories about biopolitics, and the studies about body government on contemporaneity and how they deal with the ambiguity resulting from such practices that are in the border of what is considerate masculine or feminine. Empiric material was build from an ethnographic research that matches observations of the participants and semi-structured interviews, whose records brought forth a research diary. Analyses consisted on contrast research results from those described on literature, problematizing the ways by which regulars from this gym incorporate in their everyday some body care practices. This process allowed comprehending that some practices are considered non-problematic for gender construction, and are commonly accept, whereas others, considered potentially danger for masculinity affirmation, are modified or suppressed.
