#BringBackManlyMen : Representations of masculinities in responses to Sam Smith’s and Harry Styles’ bent masculinities on Twitter.

van Rossum, Rikke January 2024 (has links)
In this thesis, I analyse the representations of masculinities in replies to Sam Smith’s and Harry Styles’ bent masculinities on Twitter. My thesis is grounded in masculinity theory, mainly that of R.W. Connell (2005) and Judith Butler’s (1990) theory on gender performativity. The two questions that guide my research are 1) What makes a male-bodied individual (un)masculine? and 2) How does masculinity intersect with other (identity) categories? To answer these questions, I coded the material which resulted in three main themes: disgust, nostalgia and (queer) joy, each of which is discussed in a separate chapter. The first chapter on disgust exposes, through applying Sara Ahmed’s (2004) concept stickiness on the material, how masculinity intersects with sexuality, identity, age and corporeality. This shows that heterosexuality lies at the core of masculinity. This is further developed in the second chapter on nostalgia, as the comments in this chapter highlight the role of the heterosexual male-bodied individual in upholding a prosperous society. A key concept here is restorative nostalgia (Boym 2001), which helps expose two main narratives in the comments: conspiracy theories and the need to return to origins. The third chapter on (queer) joy accentuates what was concluded before: masculinity is strongly entwined with heterosexuality, as Styles is deemed a queerbaiter because of his apparent heterosexuality. Smith, on the other hand, is praised as a queer icon. This points out another element: queer seems to be separate from masculinity and an essentialist identity. The main conclusion of the thesis, then, is that masculinity intersects with many different categories and that when masculinity is bent, heterosexuality lies at the core of masculinity. Furthermore, all these comments are explained to be an attempt to defend hegemonic masculinity (Connell 2005).

Sjömannan i mig : Harry Martinsons självporträtt som eldare

Åkerlind, Jan January 2024 (has links)

Funny little witches and venerable-looking wizards: a social constructionist study of the portrayal of gender in the Harry Potter series

Rodrigues, Debbie June 02 1900 (has links)
In this study I apply social constructionism as propounded by Vivian Burr (1998) to show that although J. K. Rowling uses stereotypes in the Harry Potter series as a reflection of how gender is constructed across a wide range of societal institutions in contemporary Britain, she created complex characters who on an individual level subvert social constructs and thereby offers her readers alternatives to culturally defined concepts of gender. I explore the all-pervasive social phenomenon of gender and examine how it is constructed in present-day Britain and reflected in the series (bearing in mind that the first book was published in 1997 and the last one in 2007). My analysis of female and male characters in the books, and their interpersonal relationships, shows that Rowling's often tricky portrayal of femininities and masculinities gives us an honest view of teenagers’ lives and contemporary gender relations in an ever-changing, complex world. / English Studies / M. Siberia revealed through the travel narrative: a Russian, American and British perspective

Van Zyl, Estelle 05 March 2015 (has links)
This study examines how travelogues by the Russian author Anton Chekhov, an American, George Kennan and a British citizen, Harry de Windt, contributed towards establishing the image of Siberia towards the end of the 19th century, juxtaposing their individual views against the commonly perceived view of the region at the time. In examining the texts, a literary analysis is merged with elements of other approaches, through a strong thematic focus, centring on the cultural and ideological assumptions implied in the texts. The findings reveal that both native inhabitants and foreigners are capable of expressing a justifiable opinion on a locality, resulting in different versions of what is observed, from divergent points of view. Although the three writers in this study appear to support a negative view of Siberia, closer investigation show evidence of optimism about the eventual destiny of a region in a stage of transition. / Linguistics and Modern Languages / M.A. (Russian)

John Williams fagottkonsert The Five Sacred Trees 1. Eó Mugna 2. Tortan : analys av musikaliskt innehåll samt instudering

Varga Karlsson, Gabriella January 2017 (has links)
John Williams fagottkonsert, sats 1-2.

Medverkande: Gabriella Varga Karlsson, fagott

Georg Öquist, piano

Experiences of physics teachers when implementing problem-based learning : a case study at Entsikeni cluster in the Harry Gwala District Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa

Osman, Ali 12 1900 (has links)
Problem-based learning (PBL) is an active teaching strategy that could be implemented in the South African educational system to assist in developing problem-solving skills, critical thinking skills, collaborative skills, self-directed learning and intrinsic motivation in students. Even though it is not easy to drift from a teacher-centred strategy to a student-centred strategy, but this drift is supposed to be a paradigm drift for the nation. ‘Physics is difficult’ has been the anthem of students in South African high schools. This has led to lower pass rates in physics and as a result low physics career person in society. Physics students in high schools need to be exposed to the PBL strategy since the PBL strategy focuses on real-life problems to develop problem-solving skills, critical thinking skills and self-directed learning in students which are the skills needed for concept formation in Physical Science. Basically, the education of Physical Science students focused on the ability to acquire skills to solve real-life problems. This study focuses on exploring the experiences of high school physics teachers at Entsikeni cluster, South African, when implementing problem-based learning (PBL) in their physics classrooms. The study uses the mixed-method approach where three different research instruments were used to collect quantitative and qualitative data sequentially. Questionnaires, RTOP and interview protocol were employed. The findings of the study indicate that teachers project positive attitudes toward the PBL strategy but may probably not continue to use it because it requires more time than that which is allocated in the Curriculum Assessment and Policy Statement (CAPS) Physical Science document and as a result may not be able to finish their ATP on time. Teachers are teaching physics with no specialization in physics, which probably could lead to poor, pass rates in Physical Science. Teachers were inexperienced in teaching physics in the FET and could probably affect students’ academic performance. It is recommended they apply the PBL strategy to correct the negative effect of their inexperience on students’ performance. It is evident that if inexperienced trained teachers apply an instructional strategy based on research, they tend to develop students' performance as compared to applying the traditional instructional strategy. / Science and Technology Education / M. De splittrade själarna : En studie av symboliska uttryck i Harry Potter och Halvblodsprinsen

Arvidsson, Sofia January 2010 (has links)

Almroth, Klas January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this essay is to highlight tendencies of postmodernism in Harry Martinson’s Aniara (1956), a work that has traditionally been placed in a modernist context. The analysis centers around two aspects in the text with the aim of finding traces of a postmodern world view. First the “mima”, an enigmatic machine that consoles the passengers in the first six years of the journey, is reasoned to be a mass cultural phenomenon rather than an elitist poetic device, as previous studies have suggested. The cultural production of the machine is then analyzed in the light of the theories of hyper reality and simulacrum, as conceived by Jean Baudrillard. The analysis renders two possible implications, one where the machine can be viewed as a precursor to a postmodern positive attitude of mass culture, and one more modernistic where the machine in its role as mass culture numbs the passengers and prevents them from acting on their situation in time. The second part of the analysis focuses on the view of metanarratives, as expressed within the fiction and in the wok as a whole. Jean-François Lyotard and his explanation of postmodernism’s incredulity towards metanarratives is used as a theoretical standpoint. The analysis shows that metanarratives are considered impossible within the fiction of Aniara as during the course of the journey, they are replaced with more local methods of creating meaning. On the whole, the book could be seen to replace the metanarrative of human progress by one telling of the inadequacy and inert destructibility of humanity. However, the analysis shows that metanarratives are rejected all together. The construction of a new metanarrative is made impossible by (1) the fictitious accounts clearly being a local event, (2) the text openly stating the impossibility of deeper interpretation and finally (3) the work employing a narrator too unreliable to be able to convey the unarguable truths necessary to create a new metanarrative.
