“We Did Not Trust Ourselves” : A study of the unreliable narration in Jeff VanderMeer’s Annihilation / ”Vi litade inte på oss själva“ : En undersökning om det opålitliga berättandet i Jeff VanderMeers Annihilation

Mattsson, Filip January 2021 (has links)
Annihilation is the first novel in the trilogy named “The Southern Reach,” a ScienceFiction/Horror series of books written by Jeff VanderMeer. Annihilation focuses on a team of scientists on an expedition into an area where the very nature has been altered in mysterious ways. The scientists’ goal is to study this area to come to an understanding of what is happening, but like the eleven previous expeditions, they fail.   With the aid of narratology, I will argue that Jeff VanderMeer’s Annihilation is an unreliable narrative. To prove that, I will analyse and discuss specific passage’s unreliable narration used in the novel, as well as incorporating themes from the novel that directly correlate with the unreliability of the novel’s narrative.  Annihilation is filled with ambiguous language and events that are on almost every  level unexplainable using scientific methods. The way that the novel is written makes the narrator, the biologist, unreliable in her narration of the events that take place around her. She is tormented by both her past and by the beings that inhabit Area X, such as the Crawler. The results of this study exemplify the ambiguity of VanderMeer’s writing and how he uses this ambiguous language to further thrust the narrative into a void of chaotic unreliability. There is nothing in the novel that can be trusted as fact in the context of the world in which the characters inhabit, down to the characters own thoughts and memories. The presented themes of Annihilation are in direct correlation with the unreliability of the narrative and show how deep VanderMeer went into constructing the most unreliable narrative possible.

Vilken känsla? : Flickors fasination för skräcklitteratur / Which feeling? : Girls fascination for horror books

Bäckström, Tove January 2020 (has links)
Hur uppfattar flickor genus i skräcklitteratur? / When learning the subject Swedish in school, students will meet different types of texts from different times. For some students, their free book choices will be in the horror genre. This study aims to increase the knowledge of how girls choose books in the horror literature genre, what they want to experience from reading, based on the questions: Based on what factors do girls choose horror literature? How do girls perceive gender in horror literature? What feelings do girls experience when reading horror literature? The study has a phenomenographic approach since it investigates which factors influence girls' free book choices, their perceptions of gender in the horror genre and how girls perceive the emotions created in themselves when reading horror literature. A qualitative method is used and data was collected using surveys and interviews. The results of the study show that girls choose their horror book based on the factors: Genre, the layout of the book and the back text. The girls did not base their book selection on the characters' gender and could find an identification with characters regardless of gender. Excitement, fear, joy and to some extent powerlessness were feelings that the girls described when they were reading horror literature.

Daphne du Maurier: A study of her life and works

Unknown Date (has links)
"It may be said that one of the most important characteristics of the professional librarian is his familiarity with bibliographic methods. This is due to the fact that the librarian is responsible for the accessibility of the knowledge found within the library's collections, and that in carrying out his responsibility, he must utilize bibliography. As one authority has put it, bibliography leads the inquirer, 'through channels as well-defined as are the entrances to harbors, to the particular record or records of communication which contain the information or other matter which he seeks.' Because it was felt that she needed practice in acquiring skill in this 'art of communication,' the writer decided to undertake as a graduate paper a study which would involve bibliographic investigation, a study in the form of a bio-bibliography. In choosing an author as the subject of the bio-bibliography, it was necessary to select one who might be claimed as being within the province of librarianship. Miss Daphne du Maurier, the prominent English novelist, was chosen as the subject of the paper for several reasons"--Introduction. / Typescript. / "August, 1956." / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts." The monster and the human : A study of the significance of visual humanness and level of monstrosity in horror monster design

Segerdahl, Jakob January 2022 (has links)

The effect of red-light sources on the player experience of a horror game level

Andersson, Irma January 2022 (has links)
This thesis investigates how the color red can potentially affect the player’s perception of horror game environments. The test was conducted by asking participants to play through a horror level made in Unreal Engine 4 which used realistic-looking assets. The study was performed using a mixed methodology of A/B/C testing with surveys and interviews to gather the data. The A, B, and C versions of the test used the same game-level in all versions however the color of the lighting was different in all of them. Version A used white lights, version B used red lights, and version C used red flickering lights. The results revealed that the players found the version with the white lights to be the scariest and the version with the flickering lights to be the second scariest. This was most likely due to the order in which the players played the levels, the version with white being the first that the players played. The players indicated that the realistic colors in version A added to the sense of immersion, whereas the continuous red lights in version B were perceived by some players as overdone or unnatural and would have been better suited for localized areas associated with supernatural elements. The flickering lights were well received by players and associated with a higher potential for danger and jump scares

Skrik i survival horror spel : Den upplevda skillnaden mellan kvinnligt och manligt skrik / Screaming in survival horror games : The perceived difference between female and male screams

Granath, Anna January 2022 (has links)

A frightening play: the element of horror in Hussein’s Mashetani

Minerba, Emiliano 31 January 2019 (has links)
This paper attempts an analysis of Ebrahim Hussein’s drama Mashetani through a critical approach based on the dimension of horror. Despite the pervasive strength of this element in Mashetani, it has rarely been considered as anything more than a mere stylistic element in a vision of this drama which approaches its contents only, using allegory. In this study, Mashetani will be read from a different point of view, which sees the horrific element as bearer of new contents and new subjects not always reachable through an allegorical interpretation, in order not only to make a contribution to literary criticism of this drama, but also to emphasize how horror can acquire an analytic function besides its stylistic role.

Sjöström, My January 2021 (has links)
Visual images produce a version of the world, films do so by several images per minute. Films have power to choose who and what is represented and how. This can lead to misrepresentations and the reenforcing of stereotypes. From the outside, Sweden as a country is usually associated with health, safety and equality. However within Sweden another image is produced regarding its peripheral areas. A rural area which is seen mainly as an opposite of the urban city.    This study aims to use a multimodal critical discourse analysis to explore de reproduction of the Swedish in two selected horror films. The study also explores the concept of place importance in relation to the films stories and setting. The films are produced outside of Sweden but uses Swedish peripheries as its setting and Swedish culture as means of telling a story. The results found that although the films differ in their use and reconstruction of the peripheral of Sweden some similarities were found. Nordic mythology, sects and human sacrifices are just a small part of the mutual display of Sweden between the two horror films.

The Fear of the Metal of Death : Death Metal, Horror Movies and the Dreadful Sublime

Andersson, Mats January 2021 (has links)
