This research illustrates and describes, through the use of a case study, the interpersonal process through which meaning systems are co-constructed by means of dialogue in the therapeutic context. The research is founded on the cybernetic epistemology which implies that problems, solutions and realities cannot be described as an objective reality, but rather as a construction ofthe observer. Therapy is described as a dialectic process between the therapist and the client in which new meaning systems are being co-constructed. The process
in which realities are co-constructed through narratives, are punctuated in terms of a dialectic process of description between the sensory experience (that includes cognitive mental processes which are explained through constructivism), and the description thereof in language (which is explained through social constructivism). In this recursive process meaning systems as an intersubjective phenomena are created and experienced by the individual in dialogical and interactional processes. / Psychology / M.A. (Kliniese Sielkunde)

Between death as a solution and dreaming of a life” : Personal narratives on suicide behaviour in some males with drug addictionNissen Biong, Stian January 2005 (has links)
Ikke-dømmende holdninger hos hjelpepersonell og lett tilgang til akutt psykososial omsorg erviktige elementer i et forebyggende folkehelseperspektiv / The aim of the present study was to illuminate the experiences of suicidal behaviour in someNorwegian males with long-term drug addiction, and interpret their personal narratives inregards of meaning and communication. Open-ended, in-depth interviews were chosen forcollecting data. A phenomenological-hermeneutic approach, based on the ideas of Ricoeurin combination with Labovs structural perspective on personal narratives was used toanalyse the data. This study suggests that the suicidal behaviour is a result of a complex interrelationshipbetween the person himself, the group he is a part of and the society at large. Analysis of thepersonal narratives resulted in six sub-categories. Three main categories were identified: 1)The meaning of being confirmed and attached, 2) The meaning of wishing changes in lifecircumstances and 3) The meaning of choosing between possible solutions”. The analysis asa whole formed a theme: “Between death as a solution and dreaming of a life”.The suicidal behaviour can be viewed as a speech about the individuals’s emotional relationto themselves. How masculinity is constructed has had a great impact on the participant’ssuicidal behaviour, specially their relationship with their father. The participants ownrecourses in life have been associated with a sense of coherence. Non-judgemental attitudesin professional helpers and easy access to acute psychosocial care are of importance from apreventing public health perspective /
ISBN 91-7997-084-2

Perceptions of primary school student teachers regarding the practical application of constructivismMavesere, Benjamin 23 June 2021 (has links)
Abstract in English, Afrikaans and Venda / Constructivism is a relatively recent theory of learning which focuses on using learner-centred strategies in learning. Reform efforts in education in Zimbabwe have been aimed at incorporating constructivist-inspired strategies in the classroom, with mixed results. Some teachers continue to prefer traditional approaches to learning in their classrooms, despite these being teacher-centred and generally looked down upon.
The study examined the perceptions of primary school student teachers regarding the practical application of constructivism in the classroom. A qualitative research design was adopted, and the study was grounded in a constructivist and interpretivist paradigm aimed at understanding perceptions emanating from the lived experiences of the student teachers. In all, eight student teachers were sampled for the study by means of purposive, convenience and stratified random sampling. Data was collected through a literature review, lesson observations and semi-structured individual interviews. The rigour of the study was maintained by ensuring trustworthiness and the credibility of the findings. Ethical issues were adhered to. Data was analysed using Tesch’s method of data analysis, through which the researcher identified categories and themes, and reported on in narrative format.
The study findings indicate that student teachers have a positive perception of the practical application of constructivism in learning. Participants expressed the view that the practical application of constructivism leads to deeper learning and greater understanding by learners. Participants nevertheless stated that in their efforts to implement constructivism in learning and teaching during their practicums they experienced a lack of support from mentor teachers and shortages of resources.
Considering these findings, the researcher made several recommendations to various stakeholders with the aim of helping student teachers to be more effective constructivist teachers. The recommendations include the need to carry out more research on the constructivist learning theory and its practical application in the classroom as well as encouraging teachers to apply constructivist learner-centred strategies in their classrooms. The researcher also made recommendations for further research.
Algemeen ooreengekome etiekvoorskriftewat by die meeste instellings geld, is nagekom.
The ICT pedagogic challenges and enablers of grade eight natural science and mathematics teachers in South African classrooms / Varughese J.Varughese, James January 2011 (has links)
In South Africa, Science and Technology Education faces many problems. Insufficient numbers
of Science and Technology teachers, inadequate in–service training, large classes, instruction
with the aim of narrowly orienting students towards examination passes an insufficient
integration of technology in the curriculum, and insufficient physical infrastructure dominates
the list. The Department of Education envisages the use of ICT as a tool for learning
and teaching. ICT has the potential to improve the quality of education and training. If adequate
resources are available, and teachers have confidence in the usefulness of ICTs, then
the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) may improve the teaching
and learning of Mathematics and Science.
A review of the literature indicated that the deployment of ICT resources alone will not bring
about desirable pedagogical practices in the classroom. There exists a need for interventions
that will enhance ICT pedagogical practices in South Africa. The following main research
questions were formulated:
What are the ICT pedagogic practices used by grade 8 Mathematics and Science teachers in
South African classrooms?
How do the barriers that grade 8 Mathematics and Science teachers encounter, as well as
the support they receive, influence their pedagogical practices?
What is the Principal’s role in promoting the emerging pedagogic practices using ICT in
South African classrooms?
This research comprises a secondary data analysis of the SITES 2006 South African data
base. The population and sample for this study was based on the South African grade 8
Mathematics and Natural science teachers. In SITES 2006, the samples comprised more
than 504 schools. Due to the fact that ICT is only significantly implemented in two out of nine
provinces in South Africa, 25 strata were created to secure fair representation of the population
with 666 Mathematics teachers and 622 Natural Science teachers.
Bromfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory and Engeström’s Activity Theory was used to
investigate Natural Science and Mathematics teachers’ progress in their ICT pedagogical
practices through the time–frame 2004 to 2013, as stipulated in the South Africa’s White paper
on e–Education policy. Statistical analysis using Statistical Package for Social Sciences
was used to address the research and sub–questions. The study found that South African
Mathematics and Natural Science teachers’ level of ICT use is small; when they do use ICT, it is enhanced 21st century pedagogic practices. This is in accordance with findings from the
international literature study. / Thesis (Ph.D. (Education))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012.

Die moeder som haar belewing van outisme die beste op met die inspirerende aanhaling van Emily Pearl Kingsley: “Say goodbye to the child you wanted, or else your focus will never be with the child you have.” / ENGLISH : The rationale for this study was to gain a better understanding of what it means to be the mother of a child with autism, through the use of narrative research accounts. The mother (participant), and I (researcher) furthermore utilized the sources of collected data, such as her life story, to identify components of emotional intelligence with the purpose of additional interpretation. A narrative research design, firmly rooted in an interpretivist and constructivist paradigm, should therefore serve to accurately interpret the significant emotions and other lived-experiences that a mother attaches to living with a child that has been diagnosed with autism. A multi-method approach, directed by a qualitative research approach and a narrative research design, was followed in an attempt to capture the mother‘s experiences and life story. Data collection strategies employed to generate an in-depth, rich and personal life story consisted of the following activities: an informal interview, memory box (collages, anecdotes, life line, and methaphors) and an intellectual discussion regarding emotional intelligence. The mother also participated in a collaborative discussion to identify emotional intelligence components relevant to her life story. Further collaboration and discussion with the mother were required to ensure that the data were organised, analysed and interpreted according to the mother‘s lived-experiences of autism, along with her emotions that were identified on the basis of Bar-On‘s (2003) emotional intelligence components. The meaningful findings drawn from the mother‘s narratives (in relation to the identified emotional intelligence components) suggest that the mother demonstrates an optmistic, realistic and introspective view on parenting. It can be regarded as accountable for me as researcher to state that the mother displays an educated an comprehensive understanding of the disability with which her child is living. The mother perhaps best summarises her experiences of autism in the words of Emily Pearl Kingsley‘s inspirational words: “Say goodbye to the child you wanted, or else your focus will never be with the child you have.” / Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Educational Psychology / Unrestricted

Constructing a modelling-based learning environment for the enhancement of learner performance in Grade 6 mathematics classrooms : a design study / Frans Martin van SchalkwykVan Schalkwyk, Frans Martin January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to focus on constructing a modelling-based learning environment to improve learner performance in grade 6 mathematics classrooms. The purpose emanates from the continued poor performance of learners in mathematics at different school levels, especially grade 6. The teaching and learning of mathematics is explained from an ontological point of departure, focussing on constructivist paradigms. Different types of constructivism are discussed with special attention to the school mathematics domain. The learning, problem based learning, problem solving and learning environment are key components in the discussion. A theoretical perspective on the design of modelling as a powerful learning environment in primary schools mathematics classrooms is provided. Focus is placed on the applicability of the modelling-based learning environment on the South African mathematics curriculum and on study orientation as a key component to help develop an understanding of why learners perform or do not perform in mathematics.
A mixed method research design, in which quantitative and qualitative are combined to achieve the outcomes of the research problem, is chosen for this research study project to provide a purposeful research framework. The findings of the research include not only learners’ improvement in dealing with non-routine, mathematical word problems but also in general-routine, mathematical word problems. A second finding shows that the overall SOM pre/post/retention showed good reliability, acceptable construct validity, good practical significance, and large effect but had low to medium effect in individual fields. The univariate analysis for the Crossover design used indicated that the problem solving field had statistical significance and practical significance, and the study milieu and mathematical confidence field might have statistical significance and practical significance. The third finding provided evidence concerning teacher administration, teacher and learner interaction, assessment and homework. The findings from the quantitative and qualitative data-analysis and interpretations, and literature review, guided the researcher in proposing a construct for a modelling-based learning environment as a means to improve learners’ mathematics performance in grade 6 mathematics classes in the John Toalo Gaetswe (JTG) District.
The contribution that this study makes is to propose a construct for a modelling-based learning environment to improve learner performance in grade 6 mathematics. / PhD (Mathematics Education), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014

The exploration of stereotypes within selected South African organisations / Lizelle BrinkBrink, Lizelle January 2014 (has links)
After the first democratic election that took place in South Africa in 1994, numerous changes
occurred within the labour force. The labour force has become increasingly diverse with
individuals from different races, genders and ages now fulfilling various positions within
organisations. Consequently, organisations have become more focused on managing this
diverse workforce and eliminating stereotypes, and consequently discrimination that
accompanies this diversity. Stereotypes that are formed within organisations can be based on
various criteria and, if not addressed, can lead to various negative consequences for both the
individual and the organisation. It therefore seems that stereotypes are an important topic to
research, specifically within the unique South African context.
The objective of this study was to explore the prevalent stereotypes and the experiences
thereof among individuals working in selected South African organisations. Within the social
constructivism paradigm using an emic perspective, qualitative research from both a
phenomenological and hermeneutic approach was employed to achieve the objectives of this
study. Both purposive and convenience sampling was used for the purpose of this study after
utilising a multiple case study strategy. Employees of selected South African organisations
(N = 336) were involved in this research study. These organisations formed part of the
following employment sectors: banking, higher education institutions, mining, municipalities,
nursing, police services, primary and secondary schools, and restaurant industry. Data was
collected by making use of semi-structured interviews, and data analysis was achieved by
means of thematic analysis.
The results of this study indicated that individuals working in selected South African
organisations are familiar with the meaning of stereotypes and that they are consciously aware of the origin of stereotypes. Results indicated that although not all of the participants
have had direct experiences with stereotyped groups, they are well aware that stereotypes are
also caused by indirect sources.
The results of this study also illustrate that various stereotypes exist within selected South
African organisations. It was explored on an out-group and in-group level. It was found that
not only do employees stereotype others (out-group), they are also well aware of being
stereotyped themselves (in-group). The most prevalent stereotypes were based on race,
gender, age, occupation, and other work-related dimensions. Stereotypes based on race,
gender and age were based on the internal dimensions of diversity. Stereotypes were also
based on the external and organisational dimensions of diversity and included occupation,
physical appearance, position, qualification, and duration in organisation. Interesting to note
is that with in-group occupational stereotyping, most employees felt they are also stereotyped
on their internal dimensional characteristics (race, gender and age).
Stereotyped occupations include: academics, administration staff, educators, engineers,
finance, human resources, librarians, mining, nursing, police and restaurant waitrons. The
findings of this study also showed that when individuals experience in-group stereotypes,
they react to these stereotypes on a cognitive, behavioural or emotional level. Results
indicated that participants mostly reacted to stereotypes in a cognitive manner and most of
these experiences were negative in nature. Recommendations with regard to future research
and practice were made. Managers within organisations should eliminate stereotypes from
organisational practices and decision-making by not focusing on irrelevant personal
differences, but rather on performance-related information. Employees should be trained and
educated by the organisation regarding stereotypes and the effects thereof. Employees should
also be provided with an opportunity to interact with diverse people within the organisation. / PhD (Industrial Psychology), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014
