The nature of postmaterialism: a comparative study of West Germany and the United States

Anderson, Christopher Johannes 21 November 2012 (has links)
The social and economic structures in western societies are changing and with them are the political values of their citizens. This study investigates the nature of post-materialist value orientations in the United States and West Germany. The research aimed at determining whether the indicators that Ronald Inglehart developed almost twenty years ago for explaining value-shifts are reliable tools to predict the nature of post-materialist values. These factors are: rising levels of education, a distinct cohort experience, and increased levels of economic security. With the help of mass-survey data from 1974 and 1980 that were collected in the United States and west Germany it was shown that there are other factors that are more powerful for predicting post-material values than the ones specified in Inglehart's theory. Moreover, the predictors are of a different explanatory power in the two countries under consideration. A preliminary attempt was made to find the reasons for the phenomenon of national differences. / Master of Arts

Dialogical narratives : reading Neville Alexander's writings

Dollie, Na-iem 09 1900 (has links)
This thesis is a transdisciplinary study of leading South African Marxist intellectual, political activist and sociologist of language Neville Edward Alexander’s written work in English. It is an attempt to explore the “dialogical narratives” as a proposition in my assessment of his work and it is also a description of a method he employs to arrive at his own political and literary compositions. In tracking his formation as a political subject and an activist, Alexander’s and other writers’ interpretations of his meetings with and his stories about people are explored. His writings cover the spectrum of politics, education and language, and he employed a political economy approach in all his written expositions. The study argues that he had an exceptional ability to “argue against himself” because he was a dialectical reasoner and because he embraced the political and sociological toolkit of historical materialism as the philosophical matrix of his work. / History / D.Lit et Phil. Alternativní ontologie: topologická imaginace a topologický materialismus / Alternative Ontology: topological Imagination and Topological Materialism

Mrva, Jozef January 2022 (has links)
The dissertation Alternative Ontology, subtitled Topological Imagination and Topological Materialism, focuses on the analysis of spatial phenomena and space in the intentions of the mathematical discipline of topology, which is interested in spaces from the point of view of set theory. My goal is to present topology as a tool not only for contemporary philosophy, but also for artistic creation. For the purpose of the dissertation, I formulate two concepts: Topological imagination and Topological materialism. Topological imagination is a tool and method for creating and thinking with the consciousness of space as a dynamic structure, which is not bound only by fixed laws of geometry. This method originated as the name of my long-term artistic practice, which is largely based on the study of space, topology, knot theory and the search for ways of their application in artistic and theoretical work. I propose Topological materialism as a concept that combines the thinking of networks and multi-dimensional spaces with the philosophical currents of the materialist tradition, especially the New Materialism. My basic thesis is that these cannot be perceived separately. Materialism cannot be thought without its spatial dimension, and topology without anchoring in the material world becomes a mere abstraction. The second part of the dissertation is devoted to the analysis of specific spaces: the space we inhabit, which I call phenomenological, infrastructure, logistics space, information space and the space of capital. In addition to individual analyzes, I also focus on their intersections, connections and joint operation.

Bueno, Aline Chitero. January 2010 (has links)
Among these so-called themes there is the ―environment‖, which exposes a conception of sustainable development that is understood as the possible way to facing the recent environmental debate. Thus, the goal of this work is to study the appropriation of sustainable development conception the NCP do, as well as to discuss its limits and possibilities related to environmental discussion. Having a theoretical e bibliographical basis, this research was initiated by going deeply in the concept of sustainable development. We started our work from the conception of development in the capitalist production mode, as well as the purpose of sustainability that qualifies the second term. From this perspective the following contradiction was perceived: development in capitalism means economic growing, profit, both based on human and nature exploitation; sustainability includes nature preservation by rational resources use and life quality for everyone. For this reasons, it was descried that the discussions of the NCP do not contemplate this contradiction, but merely allude to it, suggesting the use of the term sustainability instead of sustainable development. In order to proceed with this analysis, the problem was approached from the dialectical contradiction between its historical, economical and social dimensions in the teaching context, based on philosophical, methodological e logical fundaments expressed in dialectical historical materialism. It can be concluded that, despite the... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

Strange Matter, Strange Objects: An Ontological Reorientation of the Philosophical Concept of Wonder

Onishi, Brian Hisao 05 1900 (has links)
Wonder has had a rich and diverse history in the western philosophical tradition. Both Plato and Aristotle claim that philosophy begins in wonder, while Descartes marks it as the first of the passions and Heidegger uses it as a signpost for a new trajectory of philosophy away from idealism and nihilism. Despite such a rich history, wonder is almost always thought to be exhausted by the acquisition of knowledge. That is, wonder is thought of almost exclusively in epistemological terms and is discarded as soon as knowledge has been achieved. In this dissertation, I argue for an ontological reorientation of wonder that values wonder beyond its epistemic uses. To do this, I read the phenomenological and ontological work of Maurice Merleau-Ponty through recent developments in object-oriented ontology and new materialism. Much of Merleau-Ponty's work is directed toward dissolving the distinction between subject and object. His insights regarding the mutual constitution of the world lead to the possibility of an operative wonder that occurs between subject and object. Both object-oriented ontology and new materialism radicalize these insights by articulating them in terms of a vibrant or quasi-agential material world. Objects and assemblages of objects are capable of performing the becoming of the world that includes human activity, but is not reduced to it. As such, the world is capable of both self-organization and practice. Ultimately I use the philosophy-physics of Karen Barad to argue that operative wonder acts like a kind of superposition of relations between objects, and thereby accounts for a concept of wonder that is both ontologically significant and acutely generative.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Dílson Wrasse.pdf: 2729797 bytes, checksum: d955fe1b543bc4dabca252a587363dbc (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-04-27 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The present work analyzes the concept of dialectics at Lev Semionovich Vigotski (1896-1934) with regard to the body of his work and, on the other hand, his most important theoretical influences in the field of gnoseology and the theory of knowledge, and explains the theoretical foundations for the construction of a dialectical psychology. Therefore, we subdivide our work into an introductory chapter, followed by three parts: In the first chapter, we particularly emphasize the hermeneutic method used to analyze the works of the author, since the largest part of the collection still exist only in Russian, partly in English and Spanish, and to a lesser extent in Portuguese. In the first part, "The State of Vigotski´s Hermeneutic Art", we present analyzes of the historical context, the biography, the characteristics of the work and the publicizing policy. In the second part, "The Adventures of Dialectics", we discuss the most important philosophical conversation partners of the author (Immanuel Kant, Georg W. F. Hegel, Ludwig Feuerbach, Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels and Vladimir Ilich Lênin) and the discussion about dialectic in the second half of the twentieth. The third part presents the detailed analysis of some selected works and shows how the maturation process of the dialectical logic and the historical-dialectical materialism are expressed in the field of epistemology. The dispute between the two epistemic theories of idealism and materialism qualifies the author in the consolidation of a dialectical psychology, which, together with revolutionary practice, contributes to building a new society and a new human being. In this work, we support the thesis that Lev Semionovich Vigotski, without referring to the epistemological dispute and without the foundations of historical dialectical materialism, would not have elucidated the methodological limits of contemporary psychology and thus did not create the most important methodological basis for the understanding of the human psyche / Este trabalho analisa o conceito de dialética em Lev Semionovich Vigotski (1896-1934), considerando o conjunto de sua obra e os seus fundamentos gnosiológicos e epistemológicos para a construção de uma psicologia dialética.

Superveniens och dess plats inom anomal monism : En analys av debatten mellan Donald Davidson och Jaegwon Kim / Supervenience and its place within Anomalous Monism : An analysis of the debate between Donald Davidson and Jaegwon Kim

Beckman, Emma January 2006 (has links)

/
This paper analyses the debate between Donald Davidson and Jaegwon Kim concerning Davidsons idea of the supervenience of the mental upon the physical. This thought is part of Davidson's general theory of the relation between mind and body; anomalous monism. The author asks wherther Kim is right that mental supervenience is insufficient to gurantee the mental causal power. The paper analyses the standpoints of both philosophers, especially regarding their definitions of "supervenience" and argues that Kim, to some extent, can be said to have misunderstood Davidson's notion of supervenience. Kim has offered definitons of "weak" and "strong" supervenience and interpreted Davidsons supervenience as being of the kind last mentioned. The author takes a standpoint opposite of Kim's and argues that Davidson's notion of supervenience is better understood as weak supervenience, but at the same time notes that it is by no means obvious that Davidsons supervenience can be said to belong to either of these categories since these refer to "possible worlds", which Davidson refuses to accept.

Kollektivism och materialism i A.P. П.

Mankell, Christoffer January 2016 (has links)
This thesis examines the treatment of ideological matters in Andrej Platonov’s 1930 novel Kotlovan. The examination is based on Ol’ga Meerson’s theory of non-estrangement, which is applied to the depiction of ideology in Kotlovan. The specific themes examined are collectivism and materialism, which were viewed in the early Soviet period as important aspects of Marxist-Leninist ideology. The findings suggest that both collectivism and materialism are core issues in Kotlovan. Contrary to what one might suppose, however, these themes are not treated primarily in the famously dissonant and often ideologically coloured language of the surface of the text. Rather, the treatment of ideology seems to be conducted on a deeper level, where these issues are veiled by means of non-estrangement. By hiding away these core issues, the text requires the reader to accept them as given premises of the reality described in the text, in order to be able to proceed with the reading process.
