Hur viktig är vikten? : En kvantitativ och kvalitativ studie av Expressen och Aftonbladets framställning av vikt, utseende och hälsa. / How important is the weight? A quantitative and qualitative study of Expressen’s and Aftonbladet’s presentation of weight, appearance and healthJernstig, Embla, Wikström, Mikaela January 2017 (has links)
In media we often see articles about how to lose weight, what we shouldn’t like about our bodies and how to get rid of these so called problems. In this essay we examine how weight is portrayed in Sweden’s two largest evening papers, Expressen and Aftonbladet. The purpose of the essay is to see how Swedish evening papers portray weight in relation to health, appearance, and diet. We have used a quantitative content analysis combined with a qualitative critical discourse analysis to examine this. The two methods combined strengthen the validity and reliability in our results. We examine articles from the newspapers from the years of 1996, 2006 and 2016 to be able to see the differences between these years. Through the quantitative content analysis, we found many interesting patterns. Some of the most important findings are that weight often is portrayed in a way of change and not as something static. A loss of weight is in a majority of the articles described as something positive, whereas to gain weight is described as a problem and something negative. We have also found interesting results about gender. Women take the roll of a private person in a majority of the cases. The role of the expert in the articles have changed from a majority of men to a majority of women. Dieting is portrayed as something typically feminine. In the discourse of weight there seems to be at strong connection between the skinny body, happiness and health whereas the fat body is submissively connected to sickness and ill-health. Our bodies seem to be looked at like a project to be taken care of, in order to fit in to the bodily-norms. If someone fits in to the norm they get values in life in return. Our conclusion is that stereotypical norms of the skinny body and the good in loss of weight is reproduced in Expressen and Aftonbladet, and that this haven’t changed over time. We argue that this can lead to consequences in peoples lifes and a discrimination to certain groups in the society.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't : En kvalitativ undersökning av två kvällstidningars rapportering om omhändertagande av barn samt socialsekreterares yrkesroll & kompetens / Damned if you do, damned if you don't : A qualitative study of two tabloid newspapers' reporting of childcare issues and the social worker's professional role and competencePetersson, Simon, Björkman Winther, Carl January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this study was to investigate how the media portrays the social workers professional practice and to investigate how media reports on childcare issues. The method used to answer our questions was critical discourse analysis in which Norman Fairclough's three-dimensional model was in focus. The study also contains the social constructivism as the science theoretical approach and media logic as the theory. The study's approach is based on reading news articles from the Swedish tabloid newspapers Aftonbladet and Expressen. Relevant text from the news articles was extracted as quotes, which underlies the result presented. In our study we found, based on our questions, a pattern in the newspaper reports where there are links to attentive events such as children's deaths or inadequate interventions in a custody. From the knowledge gained from research and theory, it is easier for a newspaper to highlight drama and sensation of something that is negative, rather than positive. Based on our method and the result presented, we also identified a discourse that we chose to term as an acting discourse. Because on one hand, the tabloid newspapers criticizes social workers and their occupational role by questioning when a custody has taken place. On the other hand, the social workers are criticized when they have not intervened. It can be concluded that the underlying newspaper reports describe that the occupational role and competence of current social workers are a question of their behavior and non-action. From what we noted in the papers' reports, the image appears to be that the way newspapers portray/describe social workers is that, regardless of their actions social workers are perceived as not fulfilling the responsibility connected with their professional role.

Challenges facing the profession of advertising in the digital age : An empirical study of Swedish advertising professionalsTakemura, Aiko January 2012 (has links)
This thesis investigates how Swedish advertising professionals experience their work in the digital age. Findings from semi-structured qualitative interviews conducted with 15 people are organized using the concept of “media logic” re-interpreted by Mark Deuze, which covers four aspects of media work: institution, technology, organization and culture. The institution feature covers three developments occurring at the industry level, which are concentration, fragmentation and convergence. How these trends determine the way advertising professionals work is the main topic of this section. The findings show that especially due to extensive pressures from shifts of globalization and digitalization in recent years, an ongoing power struggle is taking place in all three institutional trends. The second feature is technology, in which the focus is to understand how technology shapes the way professionals interact with consumers. Interviewees were well aware of the increasing need to construct an interactive and participatory environment for brands and consumers. However, one should not be naïve and celebrate the powerful role of the consumers, nor assume that all advertising agencies are fully capable of harnessing digital technology. Organization is the third feature, where attention is paid to how professionals organize their projects and work styles. In advertising agencies, a major transformation was evident in the creative department where technologists who understand digital are becoming crucial assets next to art directors and copywriters. The last feature is culture, which examines how professionals perceive the cultures of production that influence the final advertising product. Many referred to positive aspects such as a flat and non- hierarchical culture promoting better collaboration. On the other hand, some interviewees indicated the misrepresentation of gender and ethnicity as problematic. These four features function to critically assess the challenges that lay ahead for Swedish advertising professionals in the digital age. / <p>Article manuscript 7,5 hp par of degree:<em> The rising need of technologists in the core creative team of advertising agencies</em></p>

"Demented people and elks are being equipped with GPS!" : A study of the news program Rapport's from 1979 to 2009 / "Dementa och älgar utrustas med GPS!" : En studie i nyhetsprogrammet Rapports tabloidisering från 1979 till 2009Cedergren, Johanna, Marmolin, Maria January 2009 (has links)
The aim of this study was to examine which effect tabloidization has had on the news content and the presentation of the Swedish news program Rapport, during the years 1979 and 2009. Rapport is broadcasted in the Public Service channel "Sveriges Television". Our main concern was to examine whether Rapport has stayed true to their assignment or if they have made changes to appeal to the popularised audience. To do so we focused on three questions: What is the journalist’s role? What becomes news? Who are interviewed? We used theories such as social representation, news value and media logic to help us perform the analysis. Qualitative methods were used to analyse the news broadcasts, of which John Langer’s story-types was the primary method. In addition to that we used the method of semiotics to reveal signs of tabloidization in the imagery of the broadcasts. Our results showed that the tabloidization of Rapport lies in the format rather than the news content. The changes in the news content are barely noticeable, even though the time span is quite long. The format however, has seen some tabloidization in 2009, with changes to the vignette and the feature structure. We also found changes in which people that Rapport chose to interview and changes among the journalists themselves. For instance we discovered that the representation of different groups of people is much more varied in 2009 than it was in 1979. The results also showed that the journalistic role has shifted from the task of educating the citizens to the task of being sensational and entertaining.

DN Debatts överskattade inflytande på andra medier : En studie av debattsidans genomslagskraft i Aktuellt, Ekot, Göteborgs Posten och Västerbottens-KurirenNilsson, Hanna, Jarl, Arlette January 2007 (has links)
This study intends to examine the impact of a well known debate page in one of Sweden’s biggest newspapers, Dagens Nyheter. We have done this by analysing Ekot, Aktuellt, Göteborgs Posten and Västerbottens-Kuriren to see to what extent they “take” news from the debate page. The method used was content analysis and to describe some of our thoughts about how we placed the hits in different categories we chose eight of our hits to exemplify. The material from the newspapers, radio and television was examined to discover the potential impact from the debate page. To carry out this study we have mainly used theories about how media get influenced by each other’s news and how they do follow-ups and refer to the original media. Other theories of importance for our study are for example those about what kinds of events that become news and how media influences people’s thoughts about what’s important. One of the most important conclusions we were able to draw after carrying out our study was that the debate page in Dagens Nyheter has quite a small impact on what our chosen media reported on. The biggest impact was found in the newspapers, whereas radio and television very seldom referred to the debate page. To sum up, one can absolutely say that the debate page in Dagens Nyheter is powerful and do have impact on other media, but an article published on the page is not automatically discussed and debated in other media during the day.

Media and Crisis communication : Do frames align in cases of extraordinary crises? A qualitative analysis of FOCUS online and Bild's coverage of the 2015-Germanwings airplane crashLe Roux, Morgane January 2017 (has links)
The media and crisis communication of a company operate according to different logics. The media are known to be more entertainment driven, while the company tries to remain trustworthy and publishes information only once it is confirmed. Does this difference in logic and in framing a crisis persist when the crisis occurs without any warning signs?Different crisis life-cycle models exist of which two of them are presented and discussed within this study. Additionally, media framing, media logic theory and crisis communication theory are further going to be clarified in order to identify if the difference in framing an extraordinary crisis persist. One of the addressed research questions aims to determine if there was a difference in covering the event between Germanwings and two German media, Bild and FOCUS online. The objective of the second research question is to discern if there was a frame-alignment between the two different types of media, Bild and FOCUS online. The results show that Bild and FOCUS online applied different frames while covering the event. While Bild merely focused on emotional stories and speculations over the cause of the accident, FOCUS online based their coverage on facts and statements. Furthermore, FOCUS online aligned their frames with Germanwings crisis reportage, whereas Bild merely covered according to the media logic theory.

Dags att bryta manligt revir -En kvalitativ intervjustudie om jämställdhet på Sveriges lokala sportredaktionerEriksson, Johanna, Lirfeldt, Jenny January 2020 (has links)
The aim of this study is to contribute to a deeper understanding of the underrepresentation of women working as sports journalists at local newspapers in Sweden. This study also aims to investigate how the Swedish Union of Journalists works to improve gender equality for female sports journalists. A qualitative semi-structured interview method is used to fulfill the aims of the study. The theoretical framework used are Kanter's theory of tokenism and Altheide and Snow's theory of media logic. The results shows that sports journalism faces a number of challenges in the work for gender equality, such as an excluding masculine culture, harassments in the field, difficulty of finding women to recruit and a need to prioritize more women in sports media to make women a more natural part of sports. The Swedish Union of Journalists mainly educates, provides equality projects and support female sport journalists regarding unequal conditions.

Krisen i Svenska Akademien : En katt och råtta-lek med mediaMeyerson, Stina, Volo Wiklund, Alba January 2021 (has links)
The research aims to examine Svenska Akademien’s external crisis communication 2017–2018, in the crisis induced by an exposition of sexual assaults and harassments by the so called "Kulturprofilen" during #metoo. Since the case is a historical event in Sweden and organizational crises of confidence, the study intends to contribute to the research field by adding knowledge about an uncharted area and case. The study examines the press releases issued from the organization, as well as the specific members' statements in the news media channel Dagens Nyheter. The question formulations include which approaches of crisis management Svenska Akademien practiced, how their communication was structured linguistically and rhetorically and which hierarchies and power structures became visible. The methodological approach to the case study is based on both a qualitative text analysis and a critical discourse analysis, with an image analysis as a complement to deepen the analysis. The theoretical approach applied includes a rhetorical framework, the Image Repair Theory and Media Logic. The result showed that the organizational communication could not affect the restoration of Svenska Akademien’s reputation because of the organization’s individual members’ medial communication, which appeared fragmentized in a big conflict. Two central characters in the conflict, Sara Danius and Horace Engdahl, created very different kinds of derived ethos by their different communication strategies, which also was affected by media logic. Because of the conflict, the crisis escalated and changed focus from the original problem to the current crisis management.
